Attribute-Based Encryption With Expressive And Authorized Keyword Search, Hui Cui, Robert H. Deng, Joseph K. Liu, Yingjiu Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To protect data security and privacy in cloud storage systems, a common solution is to outsource data in encrypted forms so that the data will remain secure and private even if storage systems are compromised. The encrypted data, however, must be pliable to search and access control. In this paper, we introduce a notion of attribute-based encryption with expressive and authorized keyword search (ABE-EAKS) to support both expressive keyword search and fine-grained access control over encrypted data in the cloud. In ABE-EAKS, every data user is associated with a set of attributes and is issued a private attribute-key corresponding to …

Auditing Anti-Malware Tools By Evolving Android Malware And Dynamic Loading Technique, Yinxing Xue, Guozhu Meng, Yang Liu, Tian Huat Tan, Hongxu Chen, Jun Sun, Jie Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Although a previous paper shows that existing antimalware tools (AMTs) may have high detection rate, the report is based on existing malware and thus it does not imply that AMTs can effectively deal with future malware. It is desirable to have an alternative way of auditing AMTs. In our previous paper, we use malware samples from android malware collection GENOME to summarize a malware meta-model for modularizing the common attack behaviors and evasion techniques in reusable features. We then combine different features with an evolutionary algorithm, in which way we evolve malware for variants. Previous results have shown that the …

Ehealthportal: A Social Support Hub For The Active Living Of The Elderly, Di Wang, Ah-Hwee Tan Jul 2017

Ehealthportal: A Social Support Hub For The Active Living Of The Elderly, Di Wang, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The absolute and relative increases in the number of elderly are evident worldwide, from the most developed countries to the lowest-income regions. The fast demographic transition poses great challenges to the healthcare system and introduces a significant burden to the elderly and their family. To meet the unprecedented challenges of global aging, various aging-in-place (AIP) solutions have been proposed to enable the elderly to live in their own home and community safely, independently and comfortably. Elderly need support in various aspects, such as physical, cognitive, emotional, and social, in their daily life. However, most existing AIP solutions provide support in …

Elderly Friendliness Evaluation Of Mobile Assistants, Di Wang, Xinjia Yu, Simon Fauvel, Ah-Hwee Tan, Chunyan Miao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The rapidly increasing elderly population in many developed and developing countries poses great challenges to elderly care systems. To alleviate the problem of a shrinking workforce to deliver elderly care, using mobile intelligent assistants to lessen the caregivers' workload becomes a promising solution. However, the friendliness of such mobile assistants, which is seldom measured in a quantitative manner, may hinder their acceptance by the elderly users. In this paper, we propose a formalized systematic approach named Elderly Friendliness Evaluation Methodology (EFEM) to measure the elderly friendliness of any product, service or system. Furthermore, we apply EFEM to evaluate the elderly …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The widespread adoption and dissemination of online news through social media systems have been revolutionizing many segments of our society and ultimately our daily lives. In these systems, users can play a central role as they share content to their friends. Despite that, little is known about news spreaders in social media. In this paper, we provide the first of its kind in-depth characterization of news spreaders in social media. In particular, we investigate their demographics, what kind of content they share, and the audience they reach. Among our main findings, we show that males and white users tend to …

A Nash Equilibrium Formulation Of A Tradable Credits Scheme For Incentivizing Transport Choices: From Next-Generation Public Transport Mode Choice To Hot Lanes, Salem Lahlou, Laura Wynter Jul 2017

A Nash Equilibrium Formulation Of A Tradable Credits Scheme For Incentivizing Transport Choices: From Next-Generation Public Transport Mode Choice To Hot Lanes, Salem Lahlou, Laura Wynter

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We consider a tradable credits scheme for binary transport games where one option is faster (or more comfortable) than the other, but its quality of service suffers when usage is high. Applications can be found in mode choice (public transit versus road transport), premium (i.e., express bus) versus ordinary public transit, and fast (e.g., high-occupancy toll, or HOT) versus regular lanes on expressways. We are motivated in particular by the choice between public transport and use of the road network as a privilege to be discouraged. In a future where GPS-based time-distance-place road charging exists, such next-generation transport management strategies …

A Weighted Maximum Matching Algorithm For Influence Maximization And Structural Controllability, Giorgio Sartor, Yeow Khiang Chia, Laura Wynter, Justin Ruths Jul 2017

A Weighted Maximum Matching Algorithm For Influence Maximization And Structural Controllability, Giorgio Sartor, Yeow Khiang Chia, Laura Wynter, Justin Ruths

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Structural control and influence maximization on networks both admit the problem of selecting a particular subset of nodes. In structural control, the subset of nodes should guarantee the controllability of the network (in the usual sense) for almost any combination of weights. In influence maximization, given a diffusion process over the network, the chosen subset of nodes (of a given cardinality) should produce the greatest diffusive influence over the rest of the network. While structural control exploits only the structure of the network, influence maximization depends both on the structure and the weights of the edges. We modify an algorithm …

A Unified Framework For Vehicle Rerouting And Traffic Light Control To Reduce Traffic Congestion, Zhiguang Cao, Siwei Jiang, Jie Zhang, Hongliang Guo Jul 2017

A Unified Framework For Vehicle Rerouting And Traffic Light Control To Reduce Traffic Congestion, Zhiguang Cao, Siwei Jiang, Jie Zhang, Hongliang Guo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As the number of vehicles grows rapidly each year, more and more traffic congestion occurs, becoming a big issue for civil engineers in almost all metropolitan cities. In this paper, we propose a novel pheromone-based traffic management framework for reducing traffic congestion, which unifies the strategies of both dynamic vehicle rerouting and traffic light control. Specifically, each vehicle, represented as an agent, deposits digital pheromones over its route, while roadside infrastructure agents collect the pheromones and fuse them to evaluate real-time traffic conditions as well as to predict expected road congestion levels in near future. Once road congestion is predicted, …

Deshadownet: A Multi-Context Embedding Deep Network For Shadow Removal, Liangqiong Qu, Jiandong Tian, Shengfeng He, Yandong Tang, Rynson W. H. Lau Jul 2017

Deshadownet: A Multi-Context Embedding Deep Network For Shadow Removal, Liangqiong Qu, Jiandong Tian, Shengfeng He, Yandong Tang, Rynson W. H. Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Shadow removal is a challenging task as it requires the detection/annotation of shadows as well as semantic understanding of the scene. In this paper, we propose an automatic and end-to-end deep neural network (DeshadowNet) to tackle these problems in a unified manner. DeshadowNet is designed with a multi-context architecture, where the output shadow matte is predicted by embedding information from three different perspectives. The first global network extracts shadow features from a global view. Two levels of features are derived from the global network and transferred to two parallel networks. While one extracts the appearance of the input image, the …

Privacy-Preserving K-Time Authenticated Secret Handshakes, Yangguang Tian, Shiwei Zhang, Guomin Yang, Yi Mu, Yong Yu Jul 2017

Privacy-Preserving K-Time Authenticated Secret Handshakes, Yangguang Tian, Shiwei Zhang, Guomin Yang, Yi Mu, Yong Yu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Secret handshake allows a group of authorized users to establish a shared secret key and at the same time authenticate each other anonymously. A straightforward approach to design an unlinkable secret handshake protocol is to use either long-term certificate or one-time certificate provided by a trusted authority. However, how to detect the misusing of certificates by an insider adversary is a challenging security issue when using those approaches for unlinkable secret handshake. In this paper, we propose a novel k-time authenticated secret handshake (k-ASH) protocol where each authorized user is only allowed to use the credential for k times. We …

Deep Learning On Lie Groups For Skeleton-Based Action Recognition, Zhiwu Huang, C. Wan, T. Probst, Gool L. Van Jul 2017

Deep Learning On Lie Groups For Skeleton-Based Action Recognition, Zhiwu Huang, C. Wan, T. Probst, Gool L. Van

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In recent years, skeleton-based action recognition has become a popular 3D classification problem. State-of-the-art methods typically first represent each motion sequence as a high-dimensional trajectory on a Lie group with an additional dynamic time warping, and then shallowly learn favorable Lie group features. In this paper we incorporate the Lie group structure into a deep network architecture to learn more appropriate Lie group features for 3D action recognition. Within the network structure, we design rotation mapping layers to transform the input Lie group features into desirable ones, which are aligned better in the temporal domain. To reduce the high feature …

Effect Of Timing And Source Of Online Product Recommendations: An Eye-Tracking Study, Yan Shi, Qing Zeng, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Chuan-Hoo Tan, Choon Ling Sia, Keng Siau, Jiaqi Yan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Online retail business has become an emerging market for almost all business owners. Online recommender systems provide better service to consumers during their decision making processes. In this study, a controlled lab experiment was conducted to assess the effect of recommendation timing (early, mid, and late) and recommendation source (expert reviews vs. consumer reviews) on online consumers’ interest and attention. Eye-tracking data was extracted from the experiment and analyzed. The results suggest that consumers show more interest in recommendation based on consumer reviews than expert reviews. Earlier recommendations do not receive greater attention than later recommendations.

Multi-Material Mesh Representation Of Anatomical Structures For Deep Brain Stimulation Planning, Tanweer Rashid Jul 2017

Multi-Material Mesh Representation Of Anatomical Structures For Deep Brain Stimulation Planning, Tanweer Rashid

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The Dual Contouring algorithm (DC) is a grid-based process used to generate surface meshes from volumetric data. However, DC is unable to guarantee 2-manifold and watertight meshes due to the fact that it produces only one vertex for each grid cube. We present a modified Dual Contouring algorithm that is capable of overcoming this limitation. The proposed method decomposes an ambiguous grid cube into a set of tetrahedral cells and uses novel polygon generation rules that produce 2-manifold and watertight surface meshes with good-quality triangles. These meshes, being watertight and 2-manifold, are geometrically correct, and therefore can be used to …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

We propose and demonstrate the concept of a novel compact, flexible fiber optic Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) sensor based on a double-pass Kretschmann-type configuration, where the SPR sensor chip can be replaced for various sensing applications. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed fiber-optic SPR structure has a sensitivity to salt concentration of around 4.8 μW/ppt.

Automatic Privacy Prediction To Accelerate Social Image Sharing, Zhenzhong Kuang, Zongmin Li, Dan Lin, Jianping Fan Jun 2017

Automatic Privacy Prediction To Accelerate Social Image Sharing, Zhenzhong Kuang, Zongmin Li, Dan Lin, Jianping Fan

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The manual process for privacy setting could be very time-consuming and challenging for common users. By assuming that there are hidden correlations between the visual properties of images (i.e., visual features) or object classes and the privacy settings for image sharing, an effective algorithm is developed in this paper to achieve automatic prediction of image privacy, so that the best-matching privacy setting can be recommended automatically for each single image being shared. Our algorithm for automatic image privacy prediction contains two approaches: (a) feature-based approach by learning more representative deep features and discriminative classifier for assigning each single image being …

Sql Injection: The Longest Running Sequel In Programming History, Matthew Horner, Thomas Hyslip Jun 2017

Sql Injection: The Longest Running Sequel In Programming History, Matthew Horner, Thomas Hyslip

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

One of the risks to a company operating a public-facing website with a Structure Query Language (SQL) database is an attacker exploiting the SQL injection vulnerability. An attacker can cause an SQL database to perform actions that the developer did not intend like revealing, modifying, or deleting sensitive data. This can cause a loss of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information in a company’s database, and it can lead to severe costs of up to $196,000 per successful injection attack (NTT Group, 2014). This paper discusses the history of the SQL injection vulnerability, focusing on:

  • How an attacker can exploit …

A Power Grid Incident Identification Based On Physically Derived Cyber-Event Detection, Travis Atkison, Nathan Wallace Jun 2017

A Power Grid Incident Identification Based On Physically Derived Cyber-Event Detection, Travis Atkison, Nathan Wallace

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

This article proposes a cyber-event detection framework to aid in incident Identification and digital forensics cases aimed at investigating cyber crime committed against the critical infrastructure power grid. However, unlike other similar investigative techniques, the proposed approach examines only the physical information to derive a cyber conclusion. The developed framework extracts information from the physical parameters stored in historical databases of SCADA systems. The framework uses a pseudo-trusted model derived from randomly selected power system observations found in the historical databases. Afterwards, a technique known as Bayesian Model Averaging is used to average the models and create a more trusted …

Towards A More Representative Definition Of Cyber Security, Daniel Schatz, Rabih Bashroush, Julie Wall Jun 2017

Towards A More Representative Definition Of Cyber Security, Daniel Schatz, Rabih Bashroush, Julie Wall

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

In recent years, ‘Cyber Security’ has emerged as a widely-used term with increased adoption by practitioners and politicians alike. However, as with many fashionable jargon, there seems to be very little understanding of what the term really entails. Although this is may not be an issue when the term is used in an informal context, it can potentially cause considerable problems in context of organizational strategy, business objectives, or international agreements. In this work, we study the existing literature to identify the main definitions provided for the term ‘Cyber Security’ by authoritative sources. We then conduct various lexical and semantic …

Forensic Cell Site Analysis: A Validation & Error Mitigation Methodology, John B. Minor

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

The E911 Initiative in the mid-1990s established an opportunity to obtain location specific digital evidence of subscriber activity from cellular carriers. Call Detail Records (CDR) containing Cell Site Location Information (CSLI) evidence production was made available from cellular carriers in response to the CALEA, 911 and ECPA acts. In the late 1990s, cellular carriers began to produce evidence for investigative and litigation purposes. CDR/CSLI evidence has become an important evidentiary focus in the courtroom. This research project resulted in the creation of a method of validating cellular carrier records accuracy and mitigating errors in forensic cell site analyst conclusions. The …

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

In modern world, the use of digital devices for leisure or professional reasons is growing quickly; nevertheless, criminals try to fool authorities and hide evidence in a computer by changing the file type. File type detection is a very demanding task for a digital forensic examiner. In this paper, a new methodology is proposed – in a digital forensics perspective- to identify altered file types with high accuracy by employing computational intelligence techniques. The proposed methodology is applied to the three most common image file types (jpg, png and gif) as well as to uncompressed tiff images. A three-stage process …

In this paper, we present a novel methodology of identification of Viber traffic over the network and established a model which can classify its services of audio and audio/video calls, message …

Applying A Contingency Framework To Digital Forensic Processes In Cloud Based Acquisitions, Diane Barrett Jun 2017

Applying A Contingency Framework To Digital Forensic Processes In Cloud Based Acquisitions, Diane Barrett

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

The change in business models to incorporate a wide variety of cloud computing environments has resulted in the escalation of computer crimes in the areas of security breaches and hacking. Methods to acquire evidence in a cloud computing environment are limited due to the complexity of the cloud environment. Since digital acquisition processes in cloud computing environments are still in the infancy stages, there have been no studies in the application of existing frameworks to this type environment based on traditional forensic processes.

This paper describes a qualitative study conducted to develop a robust contingency framework for deciding when to …

Protecting Digital Evidence Integrity And Preserving Chain Of Custody, Makhdoom Syed Muhammad Baqir Shah, Shahzad Saleem, Roha Zulqarnain

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Evidence is the key to solve any crime. Evidence integrity needs to be protected in order to make it admissible in the court of law. Digital evidence is more revealing, but it is fragile; it can easily be tampered with or modified. There are different techniques available to protect the integrity of digital evidence. Different automated digital evidence acquisition tools are available in the market. In this paper, we have analyzed two automated tools (EnCase and FTK Imager) that are used for disk imaging. These tools claim to protect the integrity of digital evidence. The techniques used by these tools …
