Silence, Please!: Interrupting In-Car Phone Conversations, Soledad López Gambino, Casey Kennington, David Schlangen
Silence, Please!: Interrupting In-Car Phone Conversations, Soledad López Gambino, Casey Kennington, David Schlangen
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Holding phone conversations while driving is dangerous not only because it occupies the hands, but also because it requires attention. Where driver and passenger can adapt their conversational behavior to the demands of the situation, and e.g. interrupt themselves when more attention is needed, an interlocutor on the phone cannot adjust as easily. We present a dialogue assistant which acts as 'bystander' in phone conversations between a driver and an interlocutor, interrupting them and temporarily cutting the line during potentially dangerous situations. The assistant also informs both conversation partners when the line has been cut, as well as when it …
A Graphical Digital Personal Assistant That Grounds And Learns Autonomously, Casey Kennington, Aprajita Shukla
A Graphical Digital Personal Assistant That Grounds And Learns Autonomously, Casey Kennington, Aprajita Shukla
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
We present a speech-driven digital personal assistant that is robust despite little or no training data and autonomously improves as it interacts with users. The system is able to establish and build common ground between itself and users by signaling understanding and by learning a mapping via interaction between the words that users actually speak and the system actions. We evaluated our system with real users and found an overall positive response. We further show through objective measures that autonomous learning improves performance in a simple itinerary filling task.
Edos: Edge Assisted Offloading System For Mobile Devices, Hank H. Harvey, Ying Mao, Yantian Hou, Bo Sheng
Edos: Edge Assisted Offloading System For Mobile Devices, Hank H. Harvey, Ying Mao, Yantian Hou, Bo Sheng
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Offloading resource-intensive jobs to the cloud and nearby users is a promising approach to enhance mobile devices. This paper investigates a hybrid offloading system that takes both infrastructure-based networks and Ad-hoc networks into the scope. Specifically, we propose EDOS, an edge assisted offloading system that consists of two major components, an Edge Assistant (EA) and Offload Agent (OA). EA runs on the routers/towers to manage registered remote cloud servers and local service providers and OA operates on the users’ devices to discover the services in proximity. We present the system with a suite of protocols to collect the potential service …
Coms: Customer Oriented Migration Service, Kai Huang, Xing Gao, Fengwei Zhang, Jidong Xiao
Coms: Customer Oriented Migration Service, Kai Huang, Xing Gao, Fengwei Zhang, Jidong Xiao
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Virtual machine live migration has been studied for more than a decade, and this technique has been implemented in various commercial hypervisors. However, currently in the cloud environment, virtual machine migration is initiated by system administrators. Cloud customers have no say on this: They can not initiate a migration, and they do not even know whether or not their virtual machines have been migrated. In this paper, we propose the COMS framework, which is short for "Customer Oriented Migration Service". COMS gives more control to cloud customers so that migration becomes a service option and customers are more aware of …

Development Of An Intelligent Equipment Lock Management System With Rfid Technology, Yeh-Cheng Chen, C. N. Chu, H. M. Sun, Jyh-Haw Yeh, Ruey-Shun Chen, Chorng-Shiuh Koong
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
The equipment lock has been an important tool for the power company to protect the electricity metering equipment. however, the conventional equipment lock has two potential problems: vandalism and counterfeiting. To fulfill the control and track the potential illegal behavior, the human labor and paper are required to proceed with related operations, resulting in the consumption of a large amount of human resources and maintenance costs.
This study focused on the design of RFID technology applied to the traditional equipment lock, which, through the mobile and electronic technology, strengthens the management/operating convenience of the lock and provides the solutions for …
Identifying Inexpensive Off-The-Shelf Laser Pointers For Multi-User Interaction On Large Scale Displays, Christopher S. Stuetzle, Barbara Cutler, Tyler Sammann
Identifying Inexpensive Off-The-Shelf Laser Pointers For Multi-User Interaction On Large Scale Displays, Christopher S. Stuetzle, Barbara Cutler, Tyler Sammann
Computer and Data Science Faculty Publications
We present a method for identifying inexpensive, off-the-shelf laser pointers in a multiuser interaction environment on large-scale displays. We identify a laser pointer's personality, a measure of its output in a particular context. Our method requires a set of inexpensive and unmodified green lasers, a large screen, a projector, and a camera with an infrared (IR) filter. The camera detects the IR spillover from the green laser beam, while ignoring color information projected onto the screen. During a calibration phase, a radial histogram of each laser's IR spillover are used to represent the laser's personality. Our system is able to …
The Inevitability Of Playing Politics As Chair: Advantages And Pitfalls, Domenick Pinto
The Inevitability Of Playing Politics As Chair: Advantages And Pitfalls, Domenick Pinto
School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications
Politics is a term often frowned upon as it pertains to the role of an academic leader. However as chair for almost 30 years it has become an essential yet sometimes unwanted aspect of the daily rigors of the position. This workshop explores the advantages and pitfalls of “playing politics” as a department chair and allows interactivity among participants in “what if” scenarios.
Robot Lives Matter?, Christopher Boolukos (Class Of 2017)
Robot Lives Matter?, Christopher Boolukos (Class Of 2017)
Writing Across the Curriculum
It’s 2016 and slavery is still a brutal reality around the world and a crime against humanity. The human race has never been shy when it comes to enslaving fellow human beings, so with progress in robotics and AI, we will soon be able to enslave robots to do our bidding. This poses a serious moral dilemma as to what rights such entities would possess and what responsibility we have, if any, on how we use them in society. Should it make any difference whether an entity is made of silicon or carbon, or whether its brain uses semi-conductors or …
Learning Conditional Preference Networks From Optimal Choices, Cory Siler
Learning Conditional Preference Networks From Optimal Choices, Cory Siler
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
Conditional preference networks (CP-nets) model user preferences over objects described in terms of values assigned to discrete features, where the preference for one feature may depend on the values of other features. Most existing algorithms for learning CP-nets from the user's choices assume that the user chooses between pairs of objects. However, many real-world applications involve the the user choosing from all combinatorial possibilities or a very large subset. We introduce a CP-net learning algorithm for the latter type of choice, and study its properties formally and empirically.
Context-Aware Debugging For Concurrent Programs, Justin Chu
Context-Aware Debugging For Concurrent Programs, Justin Chu
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
Concurrency faults are difficult to reproduce and localize because they usually occur under specific inputs and thread interleavings. Most existing fault localization techniques focus on sequential programs but fail to identify faulty memory access patterns across threads, which are usually the root causes of concurrency faults. Moreover, existing techniques for sequential programs cannot be adapted to identify faulty paths in concurrent programs. While concurrency fault localization techniques have been proposed to analyze passing and failing executions obtained from running a set of test cases to identify faulty access patterns, they primarily focus on using statistical analysis. We present a novel …

LSU Master's Theses
Video coding tutorials enable expert and novice programmers to visually observe real developers write, debug, and execute code. Previous research in this domain has focused on helping programmers find relevant content in coding tutorial videos as well as understanding the motivation and needs of content creators. In this thesis, we focus on the link connecting programmers creating coding videos with their audience. More specifically, we analyze user comments on YouTube coding tutorial videos. Our main objective is to help content creators to effectively understand the needs and concerns of their viewers, thus respond faster to these concerns and deliver higher-quality …
A Study On User Demographic Inference Via Ratings In Recommender Systems, Changbin Li
A Study On User Demographic Inference Via Ratings In Recommender Systems, Changbin Li
LSU Master's Theses
Everyday, millions of people interact with online services that adopt recommender systems, such as personalized movie, news and product recommendation services. Research has shown that the demographic attributes of users such as age and gender can further improve the performance of recommender systems and can be very useful for many other applications such as marketing and social studies. However, users do not always provide those details in their online profiles due to privacy concern. On the other hand, user interactions such as ratings in recommender systems may provide an alternative way to infer demographic information. Most existing approaches can infer …
Interactive Web-Based Visualization Of Atomic Position-Time Series Data, Simron Thapa
Interactive Web-Based Visualization Of Atomic Position-Time Series Data, Simron Thapa
LSU Master's Theses
Extracting and interpreting the information contained in large sets of time-varying three dimensional positional data for the constituent atoms of simulated material system is a challenging task. This thesis work reports our initial implementation of a web-based visualization system and its use-case study. The system allows the users to perform the desired visualization task on a web browser for the position-time series data extracted from the local or remote hosts. It involves a pre-processing step for data reduction, which involves skipping uninteresting parts of the data uniformly (at full atomic configuration level) or non-uniformly (at atomic species level or individual …
Underwater Cave Mapping And Reconstruction Using Stereo Vision, Nicholas Weidner
Underwater Cave Mapping And Reconstruction Using Stereo Vision, Nicholas Weidner
Theses and Dissertations
This work presents a systematic approach for 3-D mapping and reconstruction of underwater caves. Exploration of underwater caves is very important for furthering our understanding of hydrogeology, managing efficiently water resources, and advancing our knowledge in marine archaeology. Underwater cave exploration by human divers however, is a tedious, labor intensive, extremely dangerous operation, and requires highly skilled people. As such, it is an excellent fit for robotic technology. The proposed solution employs a stereo camera and a video-light. The approach utilizes the intersection of the cone of video-light with the cave boundaries resulting in the construction of a wire frame …
Maintaining High Performance Across All Problem Sizes And Parallel Scales Using Microkernel-Based Linear Algebra, Md Rakib Hasan
Maintaining High Performance Across All Problem Sizes And Parallel Scales Using Microkernel-Based Linear Algebra, Md Rakib Hasan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Linear algebra underlies a large proportion of computational problems. With the continuous increase of scale on modern hardware, performance of small sized linear algebra has become increasingly important. To overcome the shortcomings of conventional approaches, we employ a new approach using a microkernel framework provided by ATLAS to improve the performance of a few linear algebra routines for all problem sizes. Our initial research consists of improving the performance of parallel LU factorization in ATLAS for which we were able to achieve up to 2.07x and 2.66x speedup for small problems, up to 91% and 87% of theoretical peak performance …
Toward Theoretical Techniques For Measuring The Use Of Human Effort In Visual Analytic Systems, R. Jordan Crouser, Lyndsey Franklin, Alex Endert, Kris Cook
Toward Theoretical Techniques For Measuring The Use Of Human Effort In Visual Analytic Systems, R. Jordan Crouser, Lyndsey Franklin, Alex Endert, Kris Cook
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
Visual analytic systems have long relied on user studies and standard datasets to demonstrate advances to the state of the art, as well as to illustrate the efficiency of solutions to domain-specific challenges. This approach has enabled some important comparisons between systems, but unfortunately the narrow scope required to facilitate these comparisons has prevented many of these lessons from being generalized to new areas. At the same time, advanced visual analytic systems have made increasing use of human-machine collaboration to solve problems not tractable by machine computation alone. To continue to make progress in modeling user tasks in these hybrid …
Long And Short-Range Air Navigation On Spherical Earth, Nihad E. Daidzic
Long And Short-Range Air Navigation On Spherical Earth, Nihad E. Daidzic
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
Global range air navigation implies non-stop flight between any two airports on Earth. Such effort would require airplanes with the operational air range of at least 12,500 NM which is about 40-60% longer than anything existing in commercial air transport today. Air transportation economy requires flying shortest distance, which in the case of spherical Earth are Orthodrome arcs. Rhumb-line navigation has little practical use in long-range flights, but has been presented for historical reasons and for comparison. Database of about 50 major international airports from every corner of the world has been designed and used in testing and route validation. …

Copyright © 2017 by SCITEPRESS - Science and Technology Publications, Lda. All rights reserved. Similar to software products, the quality of a Business Process model is vital to the success of all the phases of its lifecycle. Indeed, a high quality BP model paves the way to the successful implementation, execution and performance of the business process. In the literature, the quality of a BP model has been assessed through either the application of formal verification, or most often the evaluation of quality metrics calculated in the static and/or simulated model. Each of these assessment means addresses different quality characteristics …
Mining Data On Traumatic Brain Injury With Reconstructability Analysis, Martin Zwick, Nancy Carney, Rosemary Nettleton
Mining Data On Traumatic Brain Injury With Reconstructability Analysis, Martin Zwick, Nancy Carney, Rosemary Nettleton
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper reports the analysis of data on traumatic brain injury using a probabilistic graphical modeling technique known as reconstructability analysis (RA). The analysis shows the flexibility, power, and comprehensibility of RA modeling, which is well-suited for mining biomedical data. One finding of the analysis is that education is a confounding variable for the Digit Symbol Test in discriminating the severity of concussion; another - and anomalous - finding is that previous head injury predicts improved performance on the Reaction Time test. This analysis was exploratory, so its findings require follow-on confirmatory tests of their generalizability.
Digital Morphologies: Environmentally-Influenced Generative Forms, Sage Jenson
Digital Morphologies: Environmentally-Influenced Generative Forms, Sage Jenson
Honors Papers
We present a generative method to grow triangular meshes with organically-shaped features. Through the application of simplified forces, millions of particles develop into complex 3D forms in silico. These forms interact with external environments in a variety of ways, allowing for the integration of the proposed technique with pre-existing 3D objects and scenes. Large simulation sizes were computationally achieved through the massively parallel capabilities of modern Graphics Processing Units (GPUs).
Towards A Relative-Pitch Neural Network System For Chorale Composition And Harmonization, Samuel P. Goree
Towards A Relative-Pitch Neural Network System For Chorale Composition And Harmonization, Samuel P. Goree
Honors Papers
Computational creativity researchers interested in applying machine learning to computer composition often use the music of J.S. Bach to train their systems. Working with Bach, though, requires grappling with the conventions of tonal music, which can be difficult for computer systems to learn. In this paper, we propose and implement an alternate approach to composition and harmonization of chorales based on pitch-relative note encodings to avoid tonality altogether. We then evaluate our approach using a survey and expert analysis, and find that pitch-relative encodings do not significantly affect human-comparability, likability or creativity. However, an extension of this model that better …
Simulating Foodborne Pathogens In Poultry Production And Processing To Defend Against Intentional Contamination, S. Lankford, D. R. Thompson, S. C. Ricke
Simulating Foodborne Pathogens In Poultry Production And Processing To Defend Against Intentional Contamination, S. Lankford, D. R. Thompson, S. C. Ricke
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
There is a lack of data in recent history of food terrorism attacks, and as such, it is difficult to predict its impact. The food supply industry is one of the most vulnerable industries for terrorist threats while the poultry industry is one of the largest food industries in the United States. A small food terrorism attack against a single poultry processing center has the potential to affect a much larger human population than its immediate consumers. In this work, the spread of foodborne pathogens is simulated in a poultry production and processing system to defend against intentional contamination. An …
Visualizing Morphogenesis With The Processing Programming Language, Avik Patel, Amar Bains, Richard Millet, Tamira Elul
Visualizing Morphogenesis With The Processing Programming Language, Avik Patel, Amar Bains, Richard Millet, Tamira Elul
Faculty Publications & Research of the TUC College of Osteopathic Medicine
We used Processing, a visual artists’ programming language developed at MIT Media Lab, to simulate cellular mechanisms of morphogenesis – the generation of form and shape in embryonic tissues. Based on observations of in vivo time-lapse image sequences, we created animations of neural cell motility responsible for elongating the spinal cord, and of optic axon branching dynamics that establish primary visual connectivity. These visual models underscore the significance of the computational decomposition of cellular dynamics underlying morphogenesis.
Ensuring The Observability Of Structural Test Obligations, Ying Meng
Ensuring The Observability Of Structural Test Obligations, Ying Meng
Theses and Dissertations
Test adequacy criteria are widely used to guide test creation. However, many of these criteria are sensitive to statement structure or the choice of test oracle. This is because such criteria ensure that execution reaches the element of interest, but impose no constraints on the execution path after this point. We are not guaranteed to observe a failure just because a fault is triggered. To address this issue, we have proposed the concept of observability—an extension to coverage criteria based on Boolean expressions that combines the obligations of a host criterion with an additional path condition that increases the likelihood …

SQL (Structured Query Language) is a standard language to communicate with a relational database system. SQL is a core competency for people in the data management field and is, therefore, a foundational skill taught to users in information systems. This research analyzes users’ mental models while they formulate SQL queries. The purpose of this thesis is to understand the strategies users use. These strategies both reflect and help develop the users’ mental models. This research attempts to discover users' mental models while learning SQL for the purpose of finding better ways to teach SQL skills. This research analyzes data from …
A Centralised Platform For Digital Forensic Investigations In Cloud-Based Environments, Shaunak Mody, Alastair Nisbet
A Centralised Platform For Digital Forensic Investigations In Cloud-Based Environments, Shaunak Mody, Alastair Nisbet
Australian Digital Forensics Conference
Forensic investigations of digital media traditionally involve seizing a device and performing a forensic investigation. Often legal and physical obstructions must be overcome so that the investigator has access to the device and the right to secure it for investigation purposes. Taking a forensic image of a hard disk may need to be done in the field but analysis can usually be performed at a later time. With the rapid increase in hard disk size, the acquiring of a forensic image can take hours or days. This poses significant issues for forensic investigators when potential evidence resides in the cloud. …
Tonga’S Organisational Vulnerability To Social Engineering, Raymond Lutui, Viliami Fe’Aomoeata
Tonga’S Organisational Vulnerability To Social Engineering, Raymond Lutui, Viliami Fe’Aomoeata
Australian Information Security Management Conference
Tonga is a small developing island in the south pacific and ICT is still in its early stages. In this paper we ask the questions, what is social engineering and who is this social engineer, what are the threats to Tonga, how can these threats be identified and which countermeasures can be taken to mitigate the risk of social engineering? The answers to these questions will lead to a social engineering risk management framework to make the risks of social engineering more transparent and help organisations implement mitigating controls against social engineering. The study was performed in four chosen organisations …

A Review Of Data Breaches And Losses That Occurred From Laptops That Were Stolen Or Otherwise Misplaced In 2015 And 2016, Samuel Griffith Wakeling, Peter Hannay, Zubair Baig
Australian Information Security Management Conference
This paper provides an analysis of what information can be found on laptops that may or may not have connections to an organisation of some form, the statistics of the number of laptops stolen or otherwise misplaced in 2015 and 2016, and the number of potentially affected people from each of the cases. As seen in many news articles, laptops are often stolen or otherwise misplaced by employees or contractors in an organisational environment. As discovered in this research, many laptops are stolen from vehicles or homes of employees rather than organisation’s buildings, but not all. The majority of stolen …
Differential Equations Models Of Pathogen-Induced Single- And Multi-Organ Tissue Damage, Fiona Lynch
Differential Equations Models Of Pathogen-Induced Single- And Multi-Organ Tissue Damage, Fiona Lynch
Honors Theses
The rise of antibiotic resistance has created a significant burden on healthcare systems around the world. Antibiotic resistance arises from the increased use of antibiotic drugs and antimicrobial agents, which kill susceptible bacterial strains, but have little effect on strains that have a mutation allowing them to survive antibiotic treatment, defined as “resistant” strains. With no non-resistant bacteria to compete for resources, the resistant bacteria thrives in this environment, continuing to reproduce and infect the host with an infection that does not respond to traditional antibiotic treatment.
A number of strategies have been proposed to tackle the problem of antibiotic …
Differential Privacy For Growing Databases, Gi Heung (Robin) Kim
Differential Privacy For Growing Databases, Gi Heung (Robin) Kim
Honors Theses
Differential privacy [DMNS06] is a strong definition of database privacy that provides indi- viduals in a database with the guarantee that any particular person’s information has very little effect on the output of any analysis of the overall database. In order for this type of analysis to be practical, it must simultaneously preserve privacy and utility, where utility refers to how well the analysis describes the contents of the database.
An analyst may additionally wish to evaluate how a database’s composition changes over time. Consider a company, for example, that accumulates data from a growing base of customers. This company …
