Towards A Conceptual Framework For Persistent Use: A Technical Plan To Achieve Semantic Interoperability Within Electronic Health Record Systems, Shellon Blackman-Lees

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Semantic interoperability within the health care sector requires that patient data be fully available and shared without ambiguity across participating health facilities. The need for the current research was based on federal stipulations that required health facilities provide complete and optimal care to patients by allowing full access to their health records. The ongoing discussions to achieve interoperability within the health care industry continue to emphasize the need for healthcare facilities to successfully adopt and implement Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems. Reluctance by the healthcare industry to implement these EHRs for the purpose of achieving interoperability has led to the …

The Effect Of Code Obfuscation On Authorship Attribution Of Binary Computer Files, Steven Hendrikse Jan 2017

The Effect Of Code Obfuscation On Authorship Attribution Of Binary Computer Files, Steven Hendrikse

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

In many forensic investigations, questions linger regarding the identity of the authors of the software specimen. Research has identified methods for the attribution of binary files that have not been obfuscated, but a significant percentage of malicious software has been obfuscated in an effort to hide both the details of its origin and its true intent. Little research has been done around analyzing obfuscated code for attribution. In part, the reason for this gap in the research is that deobfuscation of an unknown program is a challenging task. Further, the additional transformation of the executable file introduced by the obfuscator …

This study sought to begin filling this knowledge gap by exploring the relationship between DE, technical proficiency, training outcomes, and perceived training effectiveness for a new enterprise system, specifically a Case Management System (CMS) in a small and medium enterprise (SME). The research examines different subjects of technical expertise including skills, abilities, and knowledge to increase professional acceptance in the high domain …

Performance Envelopes Of Adaptive Ensemble Data Stream Classifiers, Stefan Joe-Yen Jan 2017

Performance Envelopes Of Adaptive Ensemble Data Stream Classifiers, Stefan Joe-Yen

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation documents a study of the performance characteristics of algorithms designed to mitigate the effects of concept drift on online machine learning. Several supervised binary classifiers were evaluated on their performance when applied to an input data stream with a non-stationary class distribution. The selected classifiers included ensembles that combine the contributions of their member algorithms to improve overall performance. These ensembles adapt to changing class definitions, known as “concept drift,” often present in real-world situations, by adjusting the relative contributions of their members. Three stream classification algorithms and three adaptive ensemble algorithms were compared to determine the capabilities …

Complexity Theoretic Parallels Among Automata, Formal Languages And Real Variables : Including Multi-Patterns, L-Systems And Cellular Automata, Jingnan Xie

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In this dissertation, we emphasize productiveness not just undecidability since pro- ductiveness implies constructive incompleteness. Analogues of Rice’s Theorem for different classes of languages are investigated, refined and generalized. In particular, several sufficient but general conditions are presented for predicates to be as hard as some widely discussed predicates such as “= ∅” and “= {0,1}∗”. These conditions provide several general methods for proving complexity/productiveness results and apply to a large number of simple and natural predicates. As the first step in apply- ing these general methods, we investigate the complexity/productiveness of the pred- icates “= ∅”, “= {0,1}∗” and …

Nonlinear Dielectric Behavior Of Field-Induced Antiferroelectric/Paraelectric-To-Ferroelectric Phase Transition For High Energy Density Capacitor Application, Mingyang Li Jan 2017

Nonlinear Dielectric Behavior Of Field-Induced Antiferroelectric/Paraelectric-To-Ferroelectric Phase Transition For High Energy Density Capacitor Application, Mingyang Li

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Electric field-induced antiferroelectric(AFE)/paraelectric(PE)-to-ferroelectric(FE) phase transitions are investigated for the associated nonlinear dielectric behavior, which could offer high dielectric capacity. The phenomenon in monolithic materials has been computed for Kittel antiferroelectric and BaTiO3 model systems using the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory. The general switching curves give values of the polarization as a function of external electric field. A similar computation is performed for particle-filled polymer-matrix composites where an internal depolarization field is considered. The polarization-electric field response changes with different depolarization factors, which demonstrate the shape and alignment of the dielectric particles embedded in polymer-matrix are key factors for the composite to …

Different characteristics have been gathered for each model such …

A Probabilistic Approach To Multiple-Instance Learning, Silu Zhang Jan 2017

A Probabilistic Approach To Multiple-Instance Learning, Silu Zhang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study introduced a probabilistic approach to the multiple-instance learning (mil) problem. In particular, two bayes classication algorithms were proposed where posterior probabilities were estimated under dierent assumptions. The rst algorithm, named instance-vote, assumes that the probability of a bag being positive or negative depends upon the percentage of its instances being positive or negative. This probability is estimated using a k-nn classication of instances. In the second approach, embedded kernel density estimation (ekde), bags are represented in an instance induced (very high dimensional) space. A parametric stochastic neighbor embedding method is applied to learn a mapping that projects bags …

Accelerating The Discontinuous Galerkin Cell-Vertex Scheme (Dg-Cvs) Solver On Cpu-Gpu Heterogeneous Systems, Xiaoqi Hu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Dg-Cvs (Discontinuous Galerkin Cell-Vertex Scheme) is an efficient, accurate and robust numerical solver for general hyperbolic conservation laws. It can solve a broad range of conservation laws such as the shallow water equation and Magnetohydrodynamics equations. Dg-Cvs is a Riemann-Solver-free high order space-time method for arbitrary space conservation laws. It fuses the discontinuous Galerkin (dg) method and the conservation element/solution element (ce/se) method to take advantage of the best features of both methods. Thanks to the ce/se method, the time derivative of the solution is treated as an independent unknown, which is amendable to gpu's parallel execution. In this thesis, …

Deployment, Coverage And Network Optimization In Wireless Video Sensor Networks For 3d Indoor Monitoring, Tisha Lafaye Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As a result of extensive research over the past decade or so, wireless sensor networks (wsns) have evolved into a well established technology for industry, environmental and medical applications. However, traditional wsns employ such sensors as thermal or photo light resistors that are often modeled with simple omni-directional sensing ranges, which focus only on scalar data within the sensing environment. In contrast, the sensing range of a wireless video sensor is directional and capable of providing more detailed video information about the sensing field. Additionally, with the introduction of modern features in non-fixed focus cameras such as the pan, tilt …

Integrative Pathway Analysis Pipeline For Mirna And Mrna Data, Diana Mabel Diaz Herrera Jan 2017

Integrative Pathway Analysis Pipeline For Mirna And Mrna Data, Diana Mabel Diaz Herrera

Wayne State University Theses

The identification of pathways that are involved in a particular phenotype helps us understand the underlying biological processes. Traditional pathway analysis techniques aim to infer the impact on individual pathways using only mRNA levels. However, recent studies showed that gene expression alone is unable to capture the whole picture of biological phenomena. At the same time, MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are newly discovered gene regulators that have shown to play an important role in diagnosis, and prognosis for different types of diseases. Current pathway analysis techniques do not take miRNAs into consideration. In this project, we investigate the effect of integrating miRNA …

Adaptive Block And Batch Sizing Forbatched Stream Processing System, Quan Zhang Jan 2017

Adaptive Block And Batch Sizing Forbatched Stream Processing System, Quan Zhang

Wayne State University Theses

The need for real-time and large-scale data processing has led to the development of frameworks for distributed stream processing in clouds. To provide fast, scalable, and fault tolerant stream processing, recent Distributed Stream Processing Systems (DSPS) have proposed to treat streaming workloads as a series of batch jobs, instead of a series of records. Batch-based stream processing systems could process data at high rate, however, it also leads to large end-to-end latency. In this thesis we concentrate on minimizing the end-to-end latency of batched streaming system by leveraging adaptive batch size and execution parallelism tuning. We propose, DyBBS, a heuristic …

Rationalizing The Band Gap Tunability Of Semiconductors Via Electronic Structure Calculations, Matthew N. Srnec Jan 2017

Rationalizing The Band Gap Tunability Of Semiconductors Via Electronic Structure Calculations, Matthew N. Srnec

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The polymorphs of titanium dioxide and various diamond-like semiconductor materials are promising candidates in photovoltaic solar cell applications. Several of these polymorphs have been studied with experimental and computational methods, which often aim at tuning the electronic structure, particularly the band gap value of the crystalline solid. Prior studies report that the addition of a substituent into the structure of titanium dioxide decreases its band gap value, but the reasons for this are unknown. Possible explanations for the change in band gap involve the substituent atom's crystal radius, electronegativity, and ionization energy. Understanding the cause of these changes will provide …

Universal Shape Replicators Via Self-Assembly With Attractive And Repulsive Forces, Cameron Chalk, Erik D. Demaine, Martin L. Demaine, Eric Martinez, Robert Schweller, Luis Vega, Tim Wylie

Computer Science Faculty Publications

We show how to design a universal shape replicator in a self- assembly system with both attractive and repulsive forces. More precisely, we show that there is a universal set of constant-size objects that, when added to any unknown holefree polyomino shape, produces an unbounded number of copies of that shape (plus constant-size garbage objects). The constant-size objects can be easily constructed from a constant number of individual tile types using a constant number of preprocessing self-assembly steps. Our construction uses the well-studied 2-Handed Assembly Model (2HAM) of tile self-assembly, in the simple model where glues interact only with identical …

Exploring The Multi-Touch Interaction Design Space For 3d Virtual Objects To Support Procedural Training Tasks, Sarah Holderness Jan 2017

Exploring The Multi-Touch Interaction Design Space For 3d Virtual Objects To Support Procedural Training Tasks, Sarah Holderness

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Multi-touch interaction has the potential to be an important input method for realistic training in 3D environments. However, multi-touch interaction has not been explored much in 3D tasks, especially when trying to leverage realistic, real-world interaction paradigms. A systematic inquiry into what realistic gestures look like for 3D environments is required to understand how users translate real-world motions to multi-touch motions. Once those gestures are defined, it is important to see how we can leverage those gestures to enhance training tasks. In order to explore the interaction design space for 3D virtual objects, we began by conducting our first study …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation we explore the application of machine learning algorithms to compilation phase order optimization, and epitope prediction. The common thread running through these two disparate domains is the type of data being dealt with. In both problem domains we are dealing with categorical data, with its representation playing a significant role in the performance of classification algorithms. We first present a neuroevolutionary approach which orders optimization phases to generate compiled programs with performance superior to those compiled using LLVM's -O3 optimization level. Performance improvements calculated as the speed of the compiled program's execution ranged from 27% for the …
