Lock-Free Self-Adjusting Binary Search Tree, Sachiko Sueki Dec 2017

Lock-Free Self-Adjusting Binary Search Tree, Sachiko Sueki

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

A binary search tree (BST) is a fundamental data structure for maintaining data in a way to allow fast search. As multi-core processors are widely used nowadays, such data structures require the ability to handle concurrent accesses to exploit the concurrent hardware. There are several algorithms on lock-based as well as lock-free BST with and without self-balancing. On the other hand, only a few reports can be found on lock-based self-adjusting BST. To the best of our knowledge, there are no algorithms for lock-free self-adjusting BST. Lock-free guarantees overall progress even if some processes fail, whereas lock-based algorithms fail to …

Competitive Power Down Methods In Green Computing, James Andro-Vasko Dec 2017

Competitive Power Down Methods In Green Computing, James Andro-Vasko

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

For the power-down problem one considers a device which has states OFF, ON, and a number of intermediate states. The state of the device can be switched at any time. In the OFF state the device consumes zero energy and in the ON state it works at its full power consumption. The intermediate states consume only some fraction of energy proportional to the usage time but switching back to the ON state has has different constant setup cost depending on the current state. Requests for service (i.e. for when the device has to be in the ON state) are not …

Variance: Secure Two-Party Protocol For Solving Yao's Millionaires' Problem In Bitcoin, Joshua Holmes Dec 2017

Variance: Secure Two-Party Protocol For Solving Yao's Millionaires' Problem In Bitcoin, Joshua Holmes

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Secure multiparty protocols are useful tools for parties wishing to jointly compute a function while keeping their input data secret. The millionaires’ problem is the first secure two-party computation problem, where the goal is to securely compare two private numbers without a trusted third-party. There have been several solutions to the problem, including Yao’s protocol [Yao, 1982] and Mix and Match [Jakobsson and Juels, 2000]. However, Yao’s Protocol is not secure in the malicious model and Mix and Match unnecessarily releases theoretically breakable encryptions of information about the data that is not needed for the comparison. In addition, neither protocol …

Enterprise Social Media Use And Impact On Performance: The Role Of Workplace Integration And Positive Emotions, Murad Moqbel, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah

Information Systems Faculty Publications

Organizations struggle to find ways to improve employees’ performance. To date, little research has empirically examined the relationship between enterprise social media use and knowledge workers’ performance. Using social capital theory and the broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions as our theoretical framework, we investigate the relationship between enterprise social media use and knowledge workers’ performance. We tested our research model by collecting data from employees working for a large information technology firm in the Midwestern United States and analyzing the data using a structural equation modeling approach. The results suggest that enterprise social media use can increase workplace integration, which …

The Growth, Structure, And Dynamics Of Crime In Cities, Marcos Oliveira Dec 2017

The Growth, Structure, And Dynamics Of Crime In Cities, Marcos Oliveira

Theses and Dissertations

Crime is ubiquitous in cities but lacks a statistical characterization that could lead to uncovering its underlying mechanisms. Cities are, however, in a constant process of organization making difficult to analyze urban phenomena. Yet, to understand urbanization and its consequences, we need to approach cities as evolving processes, instead of static objects. With this perspective, we examined regularities in crime regarding its growth, structure, and dynamics. We developed frameworks to examine the spatial, temporal, and periodic variations of crime in cities. Though thefts increase super-linearly with the population, we found burglaries showing a linear increase. Our analyses also confirmed crime …

High Volume Test Automation With Yeager, Casey Doran

Theses and Dissertations

High Volume Automated Testing is a powerful family of software testing techniques which enable a variety of testing goals, including the discovery of hard-to-reproduce bugs, which can enable new levels of quality assurance when applied correctly. This thesis presents a software tool, Yeager, which may be used in conjunction with existing test code to execute tests similar to Long Sequence Regression Tests based on an inferred state-model of the system under test as provided by tester annotations of state transitions caused by individual test code snippets. The usefulness of the package is evaluated through the development and deployment of a …

On Improvised Music, Computational Creativity And Human-Becoming, Arto Artinian, Adam James Wilson Dec 2017

On Improvised Music, Computational Creativity And Human-Becoming, Arto Artinian, Adam James Wilson

Publications and Research

Music improvisation is an act of human-becoming: of self-expression—an articulation of histories and memories that have molded its participants—and of exploration—a search for unimagined structures that break with the stale norms of majoritarian culture. Given that the former objective may inhibit the latter, we propose an integration of human musical improvisers and deliberately flawed creative software agents that are designed to catalyze the development of human-ratified minoritarian musical structures.

Mining Location And User Information From Users’ Trajectories, Marcello Tomasini Dec 2017

Mining Location And User Information From Users’ Trajectories, Marcello Tomasini

Theses and Dissertations

The understanding of human mobility is integral to the advancement of many fields including public health, city planning, economic forecasting, and it attracts the interest of researchers from a broad number of fields. The work of such researchers would not have been possible without the availability of large localized datasets such as mobile phone Call Detail Records (CDRs) provided by telco operators and Location Based Social Networks (LBSNs) check-ins provided by popular applications such as Twitter, Facebook and Foursquare. However, such datasets are often incomplete, anonymized, and/or inaccurate. Hence there is a need to partially reconstruct or extract more information …

Law Enforcement Resource Optimization With Response Time Guarantees, Jonathan Chase, Jiali Du, Na Fu, Truc Viet Le, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In a security-conscious world, and with the rapid increase in the global urbanized population, there is a growing challenge for law enforcement agencies to efficiently respond to emergency calls. We consider the problem of spatially and temporally optimizing the allocation of law enforcement resources such that the quality of service (QoS) in terms of emergency response time can be guaranteed. To solve this problem, we provide a spatio-temporal MILP optimization model, which we learn from a real-world dataset of incidents and dispatching records, and solve by existing solvers. One key feature of our proposed model is the introduction of risk …

Evidence Verification Complications With Solid-State Drives, Ryne Teague, Michael Black Dec 2017

Evidence Verification Complications With Solid-State Drives, Ryne Teague, Michael Black

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Solid-state drives operate on a combination of technologies that create a barrier between the physical data being written and the digital forensics investigator. This barrier prevents the application of evidence verification methods developed for magnetic disk drives because the barrier prevents the investigator from directly controlling and therefore verifying that the underlying physical data has not been manipulated. The purpose of this research is to identify a period of inactivity where the underlying physical data is not being manipulated by wear leveling or garbage collection routines such that evidence can be reliably verified with existing hashing algorithms. An experiment is …

Multiple Content Adaptive Intelligent Watermarking Schemes For The Protection Of Blocks Of A Document Image, Chetan Kr Mr., S Nirmala Dr.

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Most of the documents contain different types of information such as white space, static information and dynamic information or mix of static and dynamic information. In this paper, multiple watermarking schemes are proposed for protection of the information content. The proposed approach comprises of three phases. In Phase-1, the edges of the source document image are extracted and the edge image is decomposed into blocks of uniform size. In Phase-2, GLCM features like energy, homogeneity, contrast and correlation are extracted from each block and the blocks are classified as no-information, static, dynamic and mix of static and dynamic information content …

Optimizing Bioengineered Vascular Systems: A Genetic Algorithm Approach, Sima Mehri Kochaki Dec 2017

Optimizing Bioengineered Vascular Systems: A Genetic Algorithm Approach, Sima Mehri Kochaki

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Efficiency of current cell cultures producing biological products is limited due to accumulation of the product and waste on the cells. A previous work aims at assisting bioengineers in solving this problem by introducing a new set of cells which possess the ability to connect to one another and thus form a network. Once created, the network of cells can help the initial cellules by removing their waste and product as well as nourishing them. Our project explores a technique to be able to create the best network of such cells; hence maximizing the amount of metabolic product in the …

Eacsip: Extendable Access Control System With Integrity Protection For Enhancing Collaboration In The Cloud, Willy Susilo, Peng Jiang, Fuchun Guo, Guomin Yang, Yong Yu, Yi Mu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

It is widely acknowledged that the collaborations with more users increase productivity. Secure cloud storage is a promising tool to enhance such a collaboration. Access control system can be enabled with attribute-based encryption. In this system, a user encrypts and uploads his/her data to the cloud with an access policy, such that only people who satisfy that access policy can decrypt the data. When a recipient would like to enable another person who is originally unauthorized by the original access policy, this recipient will need to extend the access policy by adding a new policy that includes the new person …

A Compact Representation Of Human Actions By Sliding Coordinate Coding, Runwei Ding, Qianru Sun, Mengyuan Liu, Hong Liu Dec 2017

A Compact Representation Of Human Actions By Sliding Coordinate Coding, Runwei Ding, Qianru Sun, Mengyuan Liu, Hong Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Human action recognition remains challenging in realistic videos, where scale and viewpoint changes make the problem complicated. Many complex models have been developed to overcome these difficulties, while we explore using low-level features and typical classifiers to achieve the state-of-the-art performance. The baseline model of feature encoding for action recognition is bag-of-words model, which has shown high efficiency but ignores the arrangement of local features. Refined methods compensate for this problem by using a large number of co-occurrence descriptors or a concatenation of the local distributions in designed segments. In contrast, this article proposes to encode the relative position of …

Who Are Your Users? Comparing Media Professionals' Preconception Of Users To Data-Driven Personas, Lene Nielsen, Soon-Gyu Jung, Jisun An, Joni Salminen, Haewoon Kwak, Bernard J. Jansen Dec 2017

Who Are Your Users? Comparing Media Professionals' Preconception Of Users To Data-Driven Personas, Lene Nielsen, Soon-Gyu Jung, Jisun An, Joni Salminen, Haewoon Kwak, Bernard J. Jansen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

One of the reasons for using personas is to align user understandings across project teams and sites. As part of a larger persona study, at Al Jazeera English (AJE), we conducted 16 qualitative interviews with media producers, the end users of persona descriptions. We asked the participants about their understanding of a typical AJE media consumer, and the variety of answers shows that the understandings are not aligned and are built on a mix of own experiences, own self, assumptions, and data given by the company. The answers are sometimes aligned with the data-driven personas and sometimes not. The end …

A Complete Coverage Algorithm For 3d Structural Inspection Using An Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Venkat Ramana Reddy Garlapati Dec 2017

A Complete Coverage Algorithm For 3d Structural Inspection Using An Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Venkat Ramana Reddy Garlapati

Student Work

This thesis presents a novel algorithm for complete coverage of three-dimensional structures to address the problem of autonomous structural inspection using an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). The proposed approach uses a technique of cellular decomposition based on Morse decomposition to decompose the 3D target structure into 2D coverable faces that are subsequently connected using a graph-based representation. We then use graph traversal techniques such as the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) to generate a flight coverage path through the decomposed faces for a UAV to completely cover the target structure, while reducing the coverage time and distance. To test the validity …

Pose Guided Person Image Generation, Liqian Ma, Xu Jia, Qianru Sun, Bernt Schiele, Tinne Tuytelaars, Luc Van Gool Dec 2017

Pose Guided Person Image Generation, Liqian Ma, Xu Jia, Qianru Sun, Bernt Schiele, Tinne Tuytelaars, Luc Van Gool

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper proposes the novel Pose Guided Person Generation Network (PG$^2$) that allows to synthesize person images in arbitrary poses, based on an image of that person and a novel pose. Our generation framework PG^2 utilizes the pose information explicitly and consists of two key stages: pose integration and image refinement. In the first stage the condition image and the target pose are fed into a U-Net-like network to generate an initial but coarse image of the person with the target pose. The second stage then refines the initial and blurry result by training a U-Net-like generator in an adversarial …

Multilingual Sentiment Analysis : From Formal To Informal And Scarce Resource Languages, Siaw Ling Lo, Erik Cambria, Raymond Chiong, David Cornforth

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The ability to analyse online user-generated content related to sentiments (e.g., thoughts and opinions) on products or policies has become a de-facto skillset for many companies and organisations. Besides the challenge of understanding formal textual content, it is also necessary to take into consideration the informal and mixed linguistic nature of online social media languages, which are often coupled with localised slang as a way to express ‘true’ feelings. Due to the multilingual nature of social media data, analysis based on a single official language may carry the risk of not capturing the overall sentiment of online content. While efforts …

Multi-User Multi-Keyword Rank Search Over Encrypted Data In Arbitrary Language, Yang Yang, Ximeng Liu, Robert H. Deng Dec 2017

Multi-User Multi-Keyword Rank Search Over Encrypted Data In Arbitrary Language, Yang Yang, Ximeng Liu, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Multi-keyword rank searchable encryption (MRSE) returns the top-k results in response to a data user's request of multi-keyword search over encrypted data, and hence provides an efficient way for preserving data privacy in cloud storage systems while without loss of data usability. Many existing MRSE systems are constructed based on an algorithm which we term as k-nearest neighbor for searchable encryption (KNN-SE). Unfortunately, KNN-SE has a number of shortcomings which limit its practical applications. In this paper, we propose a new MRSE system which overcomes almost all the defects of the KNN-SE based MRSE systems. Specifically, our new system does …

Vkse-Mo: Verifiable Keyword Search Over Encrypted Data In Multi-Owner Settings, Yinbin Miao, Jianfeng Ma, Ximeng Liu, Junwei Zhang, Zhiquan Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Searchable encryption (SE) techniques allow cloud clients to easily store data and search encrypted data in a privacy-preserving manner, where most of SE schemes treat the cloud server as honest-but-curious. However, in practice, the cloud server is a semi-honest-but-curious third-party, which only executes a fraction of search operations and returns a fraction of false search results to save its computational and bandwidth resources. Thus, it is important to provide a results verification method to guarantee the correctness of the search results. Existing SE schemes allow multiple data owners to upload different records to the cloud server, but these schemes have …

What Do Developers Search For On The Web?, Xin Xia, Lingfeng Bao, David Lo, Pavneet Singh Kochhar, Ahmed E. Hassan, Zhenchang Xing Dec 2017

What Do Developers Search For On The Web?, Xin Xia, Lingfeng Bao, David Lo, Pavneet Singh Kochhar, Ahmed E. Hassan, Zhenchang Xing

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Developers commonly make use of a web search engine such as Google to locate online resources to improve their productivity. A better understanding of what developers search for could help us understand their behaviors and the problems that they meet during the software development process. Unfortunately, we have a limited understanding of what developers frequently search for and of the search tasks that they often find challenging. To address this gap, we collected search queries from 60 developers, surveyed 235 software engineers from more than 21 countries across five continents. In particular, we asked our survey participants to rate the …

D-Watch: Embracing “Bad” Multipaths For Device-Free Localization With Cots Rfid Devices, Ju Wang, Jie Xiong, Hongbo Jiang, Xiaojiang Chen, Dingyi Fang Dec 2017

D-Watch: Embracing “Bad” Multipaths For Device-Free Localization With Cots Rfid Devices, Ju Wang, Jie Xiong, Hongbo Jiang, Xiaojiang Chen, Dingyi Fang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Device-free localization, which does not require any device attached to the target, is playing a critical role in many applications, such as intrusion detection, elderly monitoring and so on. This paper introduces D-Watch, a device-free system built on the top of low cost commodity-off-the-shelf RFID hardware. Unlike previous works which consider multipaths detrimental, D-Watch leverages the ''bad'' multipaths to provide a decimeter-level localization accuracy without offline training. D-Watch harnesses the angle-of-arrival information from the RFID tags' backscatter signals. The key intuition is that whenever a target blocks a signal's propagation path, the signal power experiences a drop which can be …

Policy Gradient With Value Function Approximation For Collective Multiagent Planning, Duc Thien Nguyen, Akshat Kumar, Hoong Chuin Lau Dec 2017

Policy Gradient With Value Function Approximation For Collective Multiagent Planning, Duc Thien Nguyen, Akshat Kumar, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Decentralized (PO)MDPs provide an expressive framework for sequential decision making in a multiagent system. Given their computational complexity, recent research has focused on tractable yet practical subclasses of Dec-POMDPs. We address such a subclass called CDec-POMDP where the collective behavior of a population of agents affects the joint-reward and environment dynamics. Our main contribution is an actor-critic (AC) reinforcement learning method for optimizing CDec-POMDP policies. Vanilla AC has slow convergence for larger problems. To address this, we show how a particular decomposition of the approximate action-value function over agents leads to effective updates, and also derive a new way to …

A Selective-Discrete Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm For Solving A Class Of Orienteering Problems, Aldy Gunawan, Vincent F. Yu, Perwira Redi, Parida Jewpanya, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This study addresses a class of NP-hard problem called the Orienteering Problem (OP), which belongs to a well-known class of vehicle routing problems. In the OP, a set of nodes that associated with a location and a score is given. The time required to travel between each pair of nodes is known in advance. The total travel time is limited by a predetermined time budget. The objective is to select a subset of nodes to be visited that maximizes the total collected score within a path. The Team OP (TOP) is an extension of OP that incorporates multiple paths. Another …
