Lightweight Data Aggregation Scheme Against Internal Attackers In Smart Grid Using Elliptic Curve Cryptography, Debiao He, Sherali Zeadally, Huaqun Wang, Qin Liu
Information Science Faculty Publications
Recent advances of Internet and microelectronics technologies have led to the concept of smart grid which has been a widespread concern for industry, governments, and academia. The openness of communications in the smart grid environment makes the system vulnerable to different types of attacks. The implementation of secure communication and the protection of consumers’ privacy have become challenging issues. The data aggregation scheme is an important technique for preserving consumers’ privacy because it can stop the leakage of a specific consumer’s data. To satisfy the security requirements of practical applications, a lot of data aggregation schemes were presented over the …

Descriptive statistics were applied to finite questions on pre and post assessments, and content analysis on open ended answers. …
Curiosity: Emergent Behavior Through Interacting Multi-Level Predictions, Douglas S. Blank, Lisa Meeden, James Marshall
Curiosity: Emergent Behavior Through Interacting Multi-Level Predictions, Douglas S. Blank, Lisa Meeden, James Marshall
Computer Science Faculty Research and Scholarship
Over the past 15 years our research group has been exploring models of developmental robotics and curiosity. Our research is based on the premise that intelligent behavior arises through emergent interactions between opposing forces in an open-ended, task-independent environment. In an initial experiment we constructed a recurrent neural network model where self-motivation was "an emergent property generated by the competing pressures that arise in attempting to balance predictability and novelty". The system first focused on its error, then learned to successfully predict its error, and finally became habituated to what caused the error. This process of focusing, learning, and habituating …

However, there have been very few attempts to make an inexpensive robot arm with a software stack for use in higher education. This paper will outline a control and interfacing software stack built on the Robot Operating System (ROS) and a simulation of the 5 degree of freedom (DoF) robotic arm.
The Hidden Trump Model: Modeling Social Desirability Bias Through Agent Based Models, Hannah Zontine
The Hidden Trump Model: Modeling Social Desirability Bias Through Agent Based Models, Hannah Zontine
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Social desirability bias is a tendency people have to lie about their opinions if they perceive they will be judged or rejected. I present an Opinion Dynamics model in which agents may not be truthful about their opinions when they interact with their social circle. I model two processes through which agents influence one another: an online anonymous process in which agents can interact with anyone and do not fear social rejection, and a face-to-face process where they interact only with friends and may feel compelled to conform. In a political setting, this would apply to a race in which …
Software Development For Home Energy Audits: Reducing Energy Consumption In Harrisonburg Through Technology, Brantley E. Gilbert
Software Development For Home Energy Audits: Reducing Energy Consumption In Harrisonburg Through Technology, Brantley E. Gilbert
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Fossil fuels play a vital role in our daily lives. Oil, natural gas, and coal powers our cars, heats our homes and water, and are used by power companies to generate the massive amounts of electricity used every day by the United States. However, this reliance on a finite source of energy is not sustainable. Fossil fuels such as these are non-renewable resources whose production will eventually be unable to keep up with the rate of consumption. Furthermore, the extraction of the stored energy in these fuels through combustion releases harmful substances into the environment, including toxins and greenhouse gases …
Toward Measuring Network Aesthetics Based On Symmetry, Zengqiang Chen, Matthias Dehmer, Frank Emmert-Streib, Abbe Mowshowitz, Yongtang Shi
Toward Measuring Network Aesthetics Based On Symmetry, Zengqiang Chen, Matthias Dehmer, Frank Emmert-Streib, Abbe Mowshowitz, Yongtang Shi
Publications and Research
In this exploratory paper, we discuss quantitative graph-theoretical measures of network aesthetics. Related work in this area has typically focused on geometrical features (e.g., line crossings or edge bendiness) of drawings or visual representations of graphs which purportedly affect an observer’s perception. Here we take a very different approach, abandoning reliance on geometrical properties, and apply information-theoretic measures to abstract graphs and networks directly (rather than to their visual representaions) as a means of capturing classical appreciation of structural symmetry. Examples are used solely to motivate the approach to measurement, and to elucidate our symmetry-based mathematical theory of network aesthetics.
Enhancing The Learning Experience- Use Of Video Game Technology For Teaching Japanese Language, Craig A. Decampli
Enhancing The Learning Experience- Use Of Video Game Technology For Teaching Japanese Language, Craig A. Decampli
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
The Japanese language is challenging to learn, especially for native speakers of Indo- European languages. The three components of written Japanese -- Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji – include 2,136 Kanji characters, and 46 each for Katakana and Hiragana. Teaching Japanese – generally through repetition – can lead to student boredom and affect success. Research shows that video games can at least provide a more enjoyable learning experience. Despite this fact, there are a lack of video games for teaching Japanese characters. Using the Unity game engine and the C# programming language, a video game for enhancing the learning of students …

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Virtual Reality is a powerful technology with the ability to affect our senses in powerful ways. Traditionally used for entertainment, we argue that it can be used for educational purposes as well. In order to get virtual reality into the classroom, we must address its cost and portability, as well as improve the interaction that users experience with the virtual environment. Our solution, a Unity program installed on an iPhone and a Mac, attempts to solve these issues. A technical demo was created that functions and can be interfaced with. While this solution is a proof of concept, its consequences …

Deep learning is a very computational intensive task. Traditionally GPUs have been used to speed-up computations by several orders of magnitude. TensorFlow is a deep learning framework designed to improve performance further by running on multiple nodes in a distributed system. While TensorFlow has only been available for a little over a year, it has quickly become the most popular open source machine learning project on GitHub. The open source version of TensorFlow was originally only capable of running on a single node while Google’s proprietary version only was capable of leveraging distributed systems. This has now changed. In this …

Tum: Towards Ubiquitous Multi-Device Localization For Cross-Device Interaction, Han Xu, Zheng Yang, Zimu Zhou, Ke Yi, Chunyi Peng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Cross-device interaction is becoming an increasingly hot topic as we often have multiple devices at our immediate disposal in this era of mobile computing. Various cross-device applications such as file sharing, multi-screen display, and crossdevice authentication have been proposed and investigated. However, one of the most fundamental enablers remains unsolved: How to achieve ubiquitous multi-device localization? Though pioneer efforts have resorted to gesture-assisted or sensing-assisted localization, they either require extensive user participation or impose some strong assumptions on device sensing abilities. This introduces extra costs and constraints, and thus degrades their practicality. To overcome these limitations, we propose TUM, an …

Unsupervised Machine Learning In Agent-Based Modeling, Luke D. Robinson
Unsupervised Machine Learning In Agent-Based Modeling, Luke D. Robinson
Celebration of Learning
Agent-based models (ABMs) are used by researchers in a variety of fields to model natural phenomena. In an ABM, a wide range of behaviors and outcomes can be observed based on the parameters of the model. In many cases, these behaviors can be categorized into discrete outcomes identifiable by human observers. Our goal was to use clustering algorithms to identify those outcomes from model output data. For this project, we used data from the NetLogo Wolf Sheep Predation model to explore and evaluate three clustering algorithms from Python's scikit-learn package. If this task can be completed reliably by a computer, …

Migrating Behavior Search’S User Interface From Swing To Javafx, An Nguyen Dang
Celebration of Learning
Agent-based models (ABMs) is a genre of computer modeling that simulates actions and interactions between individual entities (agents). ABM is widely used to simulate behavior in many fields, including biology, ecology, chemistry, physics, economics, and social science. NetLogo is a well-known agent-based programming language that provides a powerful platform to build and examine ABMs. However, to fully analyze a model one must run the model many times with different parameters, which can be a very daunting task. Therefore, Dr. Forrest Stonedahl developed BehaviorSearch, a software tool to help with automating the exploration of ABMs. The software interfaces with the NetLogo …

Investigating Trust And Trust Recovery In Human-Robot Interactions, Abigail L. Thomson
Celebration of Learning
As artificial intelligence and robotics continue to advance and be used in increasingly different functions and situations, it is important to look at how these new technologies will be used. An important factor in how a new resource will be used is how much it is trusted. This experiment was conducted to examine people’s trust in a robotic assistant when completing a task, how mistakes affect this trust, and if the levels of trust exhibited with a robot assistant were significantly different than if the assistant were human. The task was to watch a computer simulation of the three-cup monte …
Network Modeling Of Infectious Disease: Transmission, Control And Prevention, Christina M. Chandler
Network Modeling Of Infectious Disease: Transmission, Control And Prevention, Christina M. Chandler
Honors College Theses
Many factors come into play when it comes to the transmission of infectious diseases. In disease control and prevention, it is inevitable to consider the general population and the relationships between individuals as a whole, which calls for advanced mathematical modeling approaches.
We will use the concept of network flow and the modified Ford-Fulkerson algorithm to demonstrate the transmission of infectious diseases over a given period of time. Through our model one can observe what possible measures should be taken or improved upon in the case of an epidemic. We identify key nodes and edges in the resulted network, which …
Visual Knowledge Discovery And Machine Learning For Investment Strategy, Antoni Wilinski, Boris Kovalerchuk
Visual Knowledge Discovery And Machine Learning For Investment Strategy, Antoni Wilinski, Boris Kovalerchuk
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
Knowledge discovery is an important aspect of human cognition. The advantage of the visual approach is in opportunity to substitute some complex cognitive tasks by easier perceptual tasks. However for cognitive tasks such as financial investment decision making this opportunity faces the challenge that financial data are abstract multidimensional and multivariate, i.e., outside of traditional visual perception in 2D or 3D world. This paper presents an approach to find an investment strategy based on pattern discovery in multidimensional space of specifically prepared time series. Visualization based on the lossless Collocated Paired Coordinates (CPC) plays an important role in this approach …

Every day, billions of Internet users rely on search engines to find information about places to make decisions about tourism, shopping, and countless other economic activities. In an opaque process, search engines assemble digital content produced in a variety of locations around the world and make it available to large cohorts of consumers. Although these representations of place are increasingly important and consequential, little is known about their characteristics and possible biases. Analyzing a corpus of Google search results generated for 188 capital cities, this article investigates the geographic dimension of search results, focusing on searches such as “Lagos” and …
Optimized Forecasting Of Dominant U.S. Stock Market Equities Using Univariate And Multivariate Time Series Analysis Methods, Michael Schwartz
Optimized Forecasting Of Dominant U.S. Stock Market Equities Using Univariate And Multivariate Time Series Analysis Methods, Michael Schwartz
Computational and Data Sciences Theses
This dissertation documents an investigation into forecasting U.S. stock market equities via two very different time series analysis techniques: 1) autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), and 2) singular spectrum analysis (SSA). Approximately 40% of the S&P 500 stocks are analyzed. Forecasts are generated for one and five days ahead using daily closing prices. Univariate and multivariate structures are applied and results are compared. One objective is to explore the hypothesis that a multivariate model produces superior performance over a univariate configuration. Another objective is to compare the forecasting performance of ARIMA to SSA, as SSA is a relatively recent development …
Music Feature Matching Using Computer Vision Algorithms, Mason Hollis
Music Feature Matching Using Computer Vision Algorithms, Mason Hollis
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
This paper seeks to establish the validity and potential benefits of using existing computer vision techniques on audio samples rather than traditional images in order to consistently and accurately identify a song of origin from a short audio clip of potentially noisy sound. To do this, the audio sample is first converted to a spectrogram image, which is used to generate SURF features. These features are compared against a database of features, which have been previously generated in a similar fashion, in order to find the best match. This algorithm has been implemented in a system that can run as …

Fuzzy Sets As Strongly Consistent Random Sets, Kittawit Autchariyapanitkul, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
It is known that from the purely mathematical viewpoint, fuzzy sets can be interpreted as equivalent classes of random sets. This interpretations helps to teach fuzzy techniques to statisticians and also enables us to apply results about random sets to fuzzy techniques. The problem with this interpretation is that it is too complicated: a random set is not an easy notion, and classes of random sets are even more complex. This complexity goes against the spirit of fuzzy sets, whose purpose was to be simple and intuitively clear. From this viewpoint, it is desirable to simplify this interpretation. In this …

Isn't Every Sufficiently Complex Logic Multi-Valued Already: Lindenbaum-Tarski Algebra And Fuzzy Logic Are Both Particular Cases Of The Same Idea, Andrzej Pownuk, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Usually, fuzzy logic (and multi-valued logics in general) are viewed as drastically different from the usual 2-valued logic. In this paper, we show that while on the surface, there indeed seems to be a major difference, a more detailed analysis shows that even in the theories based on the 2-valued logic, there naturally appear constructions which are, in effect, multi-valued, constructions which are very close to fuzzy logic.

With the rapid development of online shopping sites and social media, product reviews are accumulating. These reviews contain information that is valuable to both businesses and customers. To businesses, companies can easily get a large number of feedback of their products, which is difficult to achieve by doing customer survey in the traditional way. To customers, they can know the products they are interested in better by reading reviews, which may be uneasy without online reviews. However, the accumulation has caused consuming all reviews impossible. It is necessary to develop automated techniques to efficiently process them. One of the most …
Mining Software Repositories For Automatic Software Bug Management From Bug Triaging To Patch Backporting, Yuan Tian
Dissertations and Theses Collection
Software systems are often released with bugs due to system complexity and inadequate testing. Bug resolving process plays an important role in development and evolution of software systems because developers could collect a considerable number of bugs from users and testers daily. For instance, during September 2015, the Eclipse project received approximately 2,500 bug reports, averaging 80 new reports each day. To help developers effectively address and manage bugs, bug tracking systems such as Bugzilla and JIRA are adopted to manage the life cycle of a bug through bug report. Since most of the information related to bugs are stored …

Proactive And Reactive Strategies To Handle Surges In Urban Crowds, Jiali Du
Dissertations and Theses Collection
Most urban infrastructures are built to cater a planned capacity, yet surges in usage do happen in times (can be either expected or unexpected), and this has long been a major challenge for urban planner. In this thesis, I propose to study approaches handle surges in urban crowd movement. In particular, the surges in demand studied are limited to situations where a large crowd of commuters/visitors gather in a small vicinity, and I am concerned with their movements both within the vicinity and out of the vicinity (the egress from the vicinity). Significant crowd build-ups and congestions can be observed …
