Edit distance, also known as Levenshtein distance, is a very useful tool to measure the similarity between two strings. It has been widely used in many applications such as natural language processing and bioinformatics. In this paper, we introduce a new type of fuzzy public key encryption called Edit Distance-based Encryption (EDE). In EDE, the encryptor can specify an alphabet string and a threshold when encrypting a message, and a decryptor can obtain a decryption key generated from another alphabet string, and the decryption will be successful if and only if the edit distance between the two strings is within …
Machine Learning Methods For Brain Image Analysis, Ahmed Fakhry
Machine Learning Methods For Brain Image Analysis, Ahmed Fakhry
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
Understanding how the brain functions and quantifying compound interactions between complex synaptic networks inside the brain remain some of the most challenging problems in neuroscience. Lack or abundance of data, shortage of manpower along with heterogeneity of data following from various species all served as an added complexity to the already perplexing problem. The ability to process vast amount of brain data need to be performed automatically, yet with an accuracy close to manual human-level performance. These automated methods essentially need to generalize well to be able to accommodate data from different species. Also, novel approaches and techniques are becoming …

Novel Monte Carlo Methods For Large-Scale Linear Algebra Operations, Hao Ji
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
Linear algebra operations play an important role in scientific computing and data analysis. With increasing data volume and complexity in the "Big Data" era, linear algebra operations are important tools to process massive datasets. On one hand, the advent of modern high-performance computing architectures with increasing computing power has greatly enhanced our capability to deal with a large volume of data. One the other hand, many classical, deterministic numerical linear algebra algorithms have difficulty to scale to handle large data sets.
Monte Carlo methods, which are based on statistical sampling, exhibit many attractive properties in dealing with large volume of …

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
Increasingly, the last hop connecting users to their enterprise and home networks is wireless. Wireless is becoming ubiquitous not only in homes and enterprises but in public venues such as coffee shops, hospitals, and airports. However, most of the publicly and privately available wireless networks are proprietary and closed in operation. Also, there is little effort from industries to move forward on a path to greater openness for the requirement of innovation. Therefore, we believe it is the domain of university researchers to enable innovation through openness. In this thesis work, we introduce and defines the importance of open framework …

Towards Aggregating Time-Discounted Information In Sensor Networks, Xianping Wang
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
Sensor networks are deployed to monitor a seemingly endless list of events in a multitude of application domains. Through data collection and aggregation enhanced with data mining and machine learning techniques, many static and dynamic patterns can be found by sensor networks. The aggregation problem is complicated by the fact that the perceived value of the data collected by the sensors is affected by many factors such as time, location and user valuation. In addition, the value of information deteriorates often dramatically over time. Through our research, we already achieved some results:
A formal algebraic analysis of information discounting, especially …

We introduce a solution that uses the availability of heavy crowds and their smart devices, to gain more result as to where potential parking is possible. By leveraging the raw magnetometer, gyroscope, and accelerometer data, we are able to detect parking spots through the natural movement exerted by the walking pedestrians on the sidewalks beside the streets. Dating back as far as 2013, a very large portion of pedestrians composing the crowds on the sidewalk, possessed at least one smart device in their hand or pocket14]. It is this statistic that fuels our application, in which we depend on crowds …
The Darklight Rises: Visible Light Communication In The Dark, Zhao Tian, Kevin Wright, Xia Zhou
The Darklight Rises: Visible Light Communication In The Dark, Zhao Tian, Kevin Wright, Xia Zhou
Computer Science Technical Reports
Visible Light Communication (VLC) emerges as a new wireless communication technology with appealing benefits not present in radio communication. However, current VLC designs commonly require LED lights to emit shining light beams, which greatly limits the applicable scenarios of VLC (e.g., in a sunny day when indoor lighting is not needed). It also entails high energy overhead and unpleasant visual experiences for mobile devices to transmit data using VLC. We design and develop DarkLight, a new VLC primitive that allows light-based communication to be sustained even when LEDs emit extremely-low luminance. The key idea is to encode data into ultra-short, …

Significant Permission Identification For Android Malware Detection, Lichao Sun
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
A recent report indicates that a newly developed malicious app for Android is introduced every 11 seconds. To combat this alarming rate of malware creation, we need a scalable malware detection approach that is effective and efficient. In this thesis, we introduce SigPID, a malware detection system based on permission analysis to cope with the rapid increase in the number of Android malware. Instead of analyzing all 135 Android permissions, our approach applies 3-level pruning by mining the permission data to identify only significant permissions that can be effective in distinguishing benign and malicious apps. Based on the identified significant …

In-Network Retransmissions In Named Data Networking, Hila Ben Abraham, Patrick Crowley
In-Network Retransmissions In Named Data Networking, Hila Ben Abraham, Patrick Crowley
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
The strategy layer is an important architectural component in both Content-Centric Networking (CCN) and Named Data Networking (NDN). This component introduces a new forwarding model that allows an application to configure its namespace with a forwarding strategy. A core mechanism in every forwarding strategy is the decision of whether to retransmit an unsatisfied Interest or to wait for an application retransmission. While some applications request control of all retransmissions, others rely on the assumption that the strategy will retransmit an Interest when it is not satisfied. Although an application can select the forwarding strategy used in the local host, it …

Molecular anions have recently been detected in the interstellar and circumstellar media. Accurate modeling of their abundance requires calculations of collisional data with the most abundant species that are usually He atoms and H2 molecules. In this paper, we focus on the collisional excitation of the first observed molecular anion, C6H-, by He and H2. Theoretical calculations of collisional cross sections rely generally on ab initio interaction potential energy surfaces (PESs). Hence, we present here the first PESs for the C6H--H2 and C6H--He van …

Application Of Group Testing For Analyzing Noisy Networks, Vladimir Ufimtsev
Application Of Group Testing For Analyzing Noisy Networks, Vladimir Ufimtsev
Student Work
My dissertation focuses on developing scalable algorithms for analyzing large complex networks and evaluating how the results alter with changes to the network. Network analysis has become a ubiquitous and very effective tool in big data analysis, particularly for understanding the mechanisms of complex systems that arise in diverse disciplines such as cybersecurity [83], biology [15], sociology [5], and epidemiology [7]. However, data from real-world systems are inherently noisy because they are influenced by fluctuations in experiments, subjective interpretation of data, and limitation of computing resources. Therefore, the corresponding networks are also approximate. This research addresses these issues of obtaining …

A Dynamic Run-Profile Energy-Aware Approach For Scheduling Computationally Intensive Bioinformatics Applications, Sachin Pawaskar, Hesham Ali
Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
High Performance Computing (HPC) resources are housed in large datacenters, which consume exorbitant amounts of energy and are quickly demanding attention from businesses as they result in high operating costs. On the other hand HPC environments have been very useful to researchers in many emerging areas in life sciences such as Bioinformatics and Medical Informatics. In an earlier work, we introduced a dynamic model for energy aware scheduling (EAS) in a HPC environment; the model is domain agnostic and incorporates both the deadline parameter as well as energy parameters for computationally intensive applications. Our proposed EAS model incorporates 2-phases. In …

Topological insulator Bi2Se3 has shown a number of interesting physical properties. Doping Bi2Se3 with copper or strontium has been demonstrated to make the material superconducting and potentially even a topological superconductor. The recent discovery of superconducting niobium-doped Bi2Se3 reveals an exciting new physical phenomenon, the coexistence of superconductivity and magnetic ordering, as well as signatures of an odd-parity p-wave superconducting order. To understand this new phenomenon, a detailed knowledge of the electronic structure is needed. We present an observation of quantum oscillations in the magnetization (the de Haas-van Alphen effect) of …
Whisk: Web Hosted Information Into Summarized Knowledge, Jiewen Wu
Whisk: Web Hosted Information Into Summarized Knowledge, Jiewen Wu
Master's Theses
Today’s online content increases at an alarmingly rate which exceeds users’ ability to consume such content. Modern search techniques allow users to enter keyword queries to find content they wish to see. However, such techniques break down when users freely browse the internet without knowing exactly what they want. Users may have to invest an unnecessarily long time reading content to see if they are interested in it. Automatic text summarization helps relieve this problem by creating synopses that significantly reduce the text while preserving the key points. Steffen Lyngbaek created the SPORK summarization pipeline to solve the content overload …
