Fast Covariant Vlad For Image Search, Wan-Lei Zhao, Chong-Wah Ngo, Hanzi Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Vector of locally aggregated descriptor (VLAD) is a popular image encoding approach for its simplicity and better scalability over conventional bag-of-visual-word approach. In order to enhance its distinctiveness and geometric invariance, covariant VLAD (CVLAD) is proposed to pool local features based on their dominant orientations/characteristic scales, which leads to a geometric-aware representation. This representation achieves rotation/scale invariance when being associated with circular matching. However, the circular matching induces several times of computation overhead, which makes CVLAD hardly suitable for large-scale retrieval tasks. In this paper, the issue of computation overhead is alleviated by performing the circular matching in CVLAD's frequency …

To alleviate the rapidly increasing need of the healthcare workforce to serve the enormous ageing population, leveraging intelligent and autonomous caring agents is one promising way. Working towards the design and development of dedicated personal silver assistants for older adults, we follow the human-centred design approach. Specifically, we identify a number of human factors that affect the user experience of the older adults and develop an agent named Mobile Intelligent Silver Assistant (MISA) by applying these human factors. Integrating multiple reusable services onto one platform, MISA acts as a single point of contact while simultaneously providing easy and convenient access …
High-Frequency Instabilities Of Stationary Crossflow Vortices In A Hypersonic Boundary Layer, Fei Li, Meelan Choudhari, Pedro Paredes-Gonzalez, Lian Duan
High-Frequency Instabilities Of Stationary Crossflow Vortices In A Hypersonic Boundary Layer, Fei Li, Meelan Choudhari, Pedro Paredes-Gonzalez, Lian Duan
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Hypersonic boundary layer flows over a circular cone at moderate incidence angle can support strong crossflow instability in between the windward and leeward rays on the plane of symmetry. Due to more efficient excitation of stationary crossflow vortices by surface roughness, such boundary layer flows may transition to turbulence via rapid amplification of the high-frequency secondary instabilities of finite-amplitude stationary crossflow vortices. The amplification characteristics of these secondary instabilities are investigated for crossflow vortices generated by an azimuthally periodic array of roughness elements over a 7° half-angle circular cone in a Mach 6 free stream. The analysis is based on …

Is Quality Control Pointless?, Markus Karuse, Margeret A. Hall, Simon James Caton
Interdisciplinary Informatics Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Intrinsic to the transition towards, and necessary for the success of digital platforms as a service (at scale) is the notion of human computation. Going beyond ‘the wisdom of the crowd’, human computation is the engine that powers platforms and services that are now ubiquitous like Duolingo and Wikipedia. In spite of increasing research and population interest, several issues remain open and in debate on large-scale human computation projects. Quality control is first among these discussions. We conducted an experiment with three different tasks of varying complexity and five different methods to distinguish and protect against constantly under-performing contributors. We …

Stories of compromised servers and data theft fill today's news. It isn't difficult for someone who has read an informative blog post to access a system via a misconfigured service, take advantage of a recently exposed vulnerability, or gain control using a stolen password. Any of the many internet services found on a typical Linux server could harbor a vulnerability that grants unauthorized access to the system.
Since it's an impossible task to harden a system at the application level against every possible threat, firewalls provide security by limiting access to a system. Firewalls filter incoming packets based on their …
Towards A Deep Learning-Based Activity Discovery System, Eoin Rogers, John D. Kelleher, Robert J. Ross
Towards A Deep Learning-Based Activity Discovery System, Eoin Rogers, John D. Kelleher, Robert J. Ross
Conference papers
Activity discovery is a challenging machine learning problem where we seek to uncover new or altered behavioural patterns in sensor data. In this paper we motivate and introduce a novel approach to activity discovery based on modern deep learning techniques. We hypothesise that our proposed approach can deal with interleaved datasets in a more intelligent manner than most existing AD methods. We also build upon prior work building hierarchies of activities that capture the inherent ag- gregate nature of complex activities and show how this could plausibly be adapted to work with the deep learning technique we present. Finally, we …

We introduce and study general mathematical properties of a new generator of continuous distributions with two extra parameters called the Another generalized transmuted family of distributions. We present some special models. We investigate the asymptotes and shapes. The new density function can be expressed as a linear combination of exponentiated densities based on the same baseline distribution. We obtain explicit expressions for the ordinary and incomplete moments and generating functions, Bonferroni and Lorenz curves, asymptotic distribution of the extreme values, Shannon and Renyi entropies and order statistics, which hold for any baseline model, certain characterisations are presented. Further, we …
Ultracoproduct Continua And Their Regular Subcontinua, Paul Bankston
Ultracoproduct Continua And Their Regular Subcontinua, Paul Bankston
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
We continue our study of ultracoproduct continua, focusing on the role played by the regular subcontinua—those subcontinua which are themselves ultracoproducts. Regular subcontinua help us in the analysis of intervals, composants, and noncut points of ultracoproduct continua. Also, by identifying two points when they are contained in the same regular subcontinua, we naturally generalize the partition of a standard subcontinuum of ℍ * into its layers.
Creating And Automatically Grading Annotated Questions, Alicia Crowder Wood
Creating And Automatically Grading Annotated Questions, Alicia Crowder Wood
Theses and Dissertations
We have created a question type that allows teachers to easily create questions, helps provide an intuitive user experience for students to take questions, and reduces the time it currently takes teachers to grade and provide feedback to students. This question type, or an "annotated" question, will allow teachers to test students' knowledge in a particular subject area by having students "annotate" or mark text and video sources to answer questions. Through user testing we determined that overall the interface and the implemented system decrease the time it would take a teacher to grade annotated quiz questions. However, there are …

While mobile crowd-sourcing has become a game-changer for many urban operations, such as last mile logistics and municipal monitoring, we believe that the design of such crowdsourcing strategies must better accommodate the real-world behavioral preferences and characteristics of users. To provide a real-world testbed to study the impact of novel mobile crowd-sourcing strategies, we have designed, developed and experimented with a real-world mobile crowd-tasking platform on the SMU campus, called TA$Ker. We enhanced the TA$Ker platform to support several new features (e.g., task bundling, differential pricing and cheating analytics) and experimentally investigated these features via a two-month deployment of TA$Ker, …

Common use of smartphones is a compelling reason for performing activity recognition with on-board sensors as it is more practical than other approaches, such as wearable sensors and augmented environments. Many solutions have been proposed by academia, but practical use is limited to experimental settings. Ad hoc solutions exist with different degrees in recognition accuracy and efficiency. To ease the development of activity recognition for the mobile application eco-system, Google released an activity recognition service on their Android platform. In this paper, we present a systematic evaluation of this activity recognition service and share the lesson learnt. Through our experiments, …

This paper provides the materials used to collect survey data for the conceptual replication of Pavlou (2003) by Moqbel and Bartelt (2015). This replication paper used trust and perceived risk, in addition to the technology acceptance model (TAM) factors of perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use, to determine how consumer’s behavioral intentions affect online transactions (Moqbel & Bartelt, 2015). Two hundred forty participants took part in the 15-minute survey, with the option of choosing either online or paper format. This paper provides additional materials and details on how the survey was conducted. Step-by-step explanations are provided for the design, …
Developers’ Perceptions On Object-Oriented Design And Architectural Roles, Maurício Aniche, Marco Aurélio Gerosa, Christoph Treude
Developers’ Perceptions On Object-Oriented Design And Architectural Roles, Maurício Aniche, Marco Aurélio Gerosa, Christoph Treude
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Software developers commonly rely on well-known software architecture patterns, such as MVC, to build their applications. In many of these patterns, classes play specific roles in the system, such as Controllers or Entities, which means that each of these classes has specific characteristics in terms of object-oriented class design and implementation. Indeed, as we have shown in a previous study, architectural roles are different from each other in terms of code metrics. In this paper, we present a study in a software development company in which we captured developers’ perceptions on object-oriented design aspects of the architectural roles in their …
Representation Learning For Homophilic Preferences, Trong T. Nguyen, Hady W. Lauw
Representation Learning For Homophilic Preferences, Trong T. Nguyen, Hady W. Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Users express their personal preferences through ratings, adoptions, and other consumption behaviors. We seek tolearn latent representations for user preferences from such behavioral data. One representation learning model that has been shown to be effective for large preference datasets is Restricted Boltzmann Machine (RBM). While homophily, or the tendency of friends to share their preferences at some level, is an established notion in sociology, thus far it has not yet been clearly demonstrated on RBM-based preference models. The question lies in how to appropriately incorporate social network into the architecture of RBM-based models for learning representations of preferences. In this …

On The Feasibility Of Detecting Cross-Platform Code Clones Via Identifier Similarity, Xiao Cheng, Lingxiao Jiang, Hao Zhong, Haibo Yu, Jianjun Zhao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
More and more mobile applications run on multiple mobile operating systems to attract more users of different platforms. Although versions on different platforms are implemented in different programming languages (e.g., Java and Objective-C), there must be many code snippets that implement the similar business logic on different platforms. Such code snippets are called cross-platform clones. It is challenging but essential to detect such clones for software maintenance. Due to the practice that developers usually use some common identifiers when implementing the same business logic on different platforms, in this paper, we investigate the identifier similarity of the same mobile application …

Community detection plays an important role in a wide range of research topics for social networks including personalized recommendation services and information dissemination. The highly dynamic nature of social platforms, and accordingly the constant updates to the underlying network, all present a serious challenge for efficient maintenance of the identified communities. How to avoid computing from scratch the whole community detection result in face of every update, which constitutes small changes more often than not. To solve this problem, we propose a novel and efficient algorithm to maintain the communities in dynamic social networks by identifying and updating only those …

Provably Secure Robust Optimistic Fair Exchange Of Distributed Signatures, Yujue Wang, Qianhong Wu, Duncan S. Wong, Bo Qin, Jian Mao, Yong Ding
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We introduce the concept of optimistic fair exchange of distributed signatures (OFEDS) which allows two groups of parties to fairly exchange digital signatures. Specifically, an authorized set of parties from each group can jointly take part in the protocol on behalf of the affiliated group to fulfill obligation, and a semi-trusted arbitrator will intervene in the protocol only when there are disputes between two sides. Our OFEDS extends the functionality of optimistic fair exchange of threshold signatures to a more generic case. We formalize the security model of OFEDS, in which besides the standard security requirements for existing optimistic fair …
Improving Carbon Efficiency Through Container Size Optimization And Shipment Consolidation, Nang Laik Ma, Kar Way Tan, Edwin Lik Ming Chong
Improving Carbon Efficiency Through Container Size Optimization And Shipment Consolidation, Nang Laik Ma, Kar Way Tan, Edwin Lik Ming Chong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Purpose: Many manufacturing companies that ship goods through full container loads found themselves under-utilizing the containers and resulting in higher carbon footprint per volume shipment. One of the reasons is the choice of non-ideal container sizes for their shipments. Consolidation fills up the containers more efficiently that reduces the overall carbon footprint. The objective of this paper is to support decisions on selection of appropriate combination of container sizes and shipment consolidation for a manufacturing company. We develop two-steps model which first takes the volumes to be shipped as an input and provide the combination of container sizes required; then …

We propose PADA, a new power evaluation tool to measure and optimize power use of mobile sensing applications. Our motivational study with 53 professional developers shows they face huge challenges in meeting power requirements. The key challenges are from the significant time and effort for repetitive power measurements since the power use of sensing applications needs to be evaluated under various real-world usage scenarios and sensing parameters. PADA enables developers to obtain enriched power information under diverse usage scenarios in development environments without deploying and testing applications on real phones in real-life situations. We conducted two user studies with 19 …
Modeling Sequential Preferences With Dynamic User And Context Factors, Duc Trong Le, Yuan Fang, Hady W. Lauw
Modeling Sequential Preferences With Dynamic User And Context Factors, Duc Trong Le, Yuan Fang, Hady W. Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Users express their preferences for items in diverse forms, through their liking for items, as well as through the sequence in which they consume items. The latter, referred to as “sequential preference”, manifests itself in scenarios such as song or video playlists, topics one reads or writes about in social media, etc. The current approach to modeling sequential preferences relies primarily on the sequence information, i.e., which item follows another item. However, there are other important factors, due to either the user or the context, which may dynamically affect the way a sequence unfolds. In this work, we develop generative …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Context: The quality of mobile applications has a vital impact on their user's experience, ratings and ultimately overall success. Given the high competition in the mobile application market, i.e., many mobile applications perform the same or similar functionality, users of mobile apps tend to be less tolerant to quality issues. Goal: Therefore, identifying these crashing releases early on so that they can be avoided will help mobile app developers keep their user base and ensure the overall success of their apps. Method: To help mobile developers, we use machine learning techniques to effectively predict mobile app releases that are more …

By effectively utilizing smartphones to reach out and engage a large population of mobile users, mobile crowdsourcing can become a game-changer for many urban operations, such as last mile logistics and municipal monitoring. To overcome the uncertainties and risks associated with a purely best-effort, opportunistic model of such crowdsourcing, we advocate a more centrally-coordinated approach, that (a) takes into account the predicted movement paths of workers and (b) factors in typical human behavioral responses to various incentives and deadlines. To experimentally tackle these challenges, we design, develop and experiment with a real-world mobile crowd-Tasking platform on an urban campus in …
Towards Autonomous Behavior Learning Of Non-Player Characters In Games, Shu Feng, Ah-Hwee Tan
Towards Autonomous Behavior Learning Of Non-Player Characters In Games, Shu Feng, Ah-Hwee Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Non-Player-Characters (NPCs), as found in computer games, can be modelled as intelligent systems, which serve to improve the interactivity and playability of the games. Although reinforcement learning (RL) has been a promising approach to creating the behavior models of non-player characters (NPC), an initial stage of exploration and low performance is typically required. On the other hand, imitative learning (IL) is an effective approach to pre-building a NPC’s behavior model by observing the opponent’s actions, but learning by imitation limits the agent’s performance to that of its opponents. In view of their complementary strengths, this paper proposes a computational model …

The Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) was exported to Korea in 2015, resulting in a threat to neighboring nations. We evaluated the possibility of using a digital surveillance system based on web searches and social media data to monitor this MERS outbreak. We collected the number of daily laboratory-confirmed MERS cases and quarantined cases from May 11, 2015 to June 26, 2015 using the Korean government MERS portal. The daily trends observed via Google search and Twitter during the same time period were also ascertained using Google Trends and Topsy. Correlations among the data were then examined using Spearman …
Autoquery: Automatic Construction Of Dependency Queries For Code Search, Shaowei Wang, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang
Autoquery: Automatic Construction Of Dependency Queries For Code Search, Shaowei Wang, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Many code search techniques have been proposed to return relevant code for a user query expressed as textual descriptions. However, source code is not mere text. It contains dependency relations among various program elements. To leverage these dependencies for more accurate code search results, techniques have been proposed to allow user queries to be expressed as control and data dependency relationships among program elements. Although such techniques have been shown to be effective for finding relevant code, it remains a question whether appropriate queries can be generated by average users. In this work, we address this concern by proposing a …
