Teaching Android Security Through Examples: A Publicly Available Database Of Vulnerable Apps, Daniel E. Krutz, Samuel A. Malachowsky
Articles
Security is hard, and teaching security can be even harder. Here we describe a public educational activity to assist in the instruction of both students and developers in creating secure Android apps. Our set of activities includes example vulnerable applications, information about each vulnerability, steps on how to repair the vulnerabilities, and information about how to confirm that the vulnerability has been properly repaired. Our primary goal is to make these activities available to other instructors for use in their classrooms ranging from the K-12 to university settings. A secondary goal of this project is to foster interest in security …
A Reduced Labeled Samples (Rls) Framework For Classification Of Imbalanced Concept-Drifting Streaming Data., Elaheh Arabmakki
A Reduced Labeled Samples (Rls) Framework For Classification Of Imbalanced Concept-Drifting Streaming Data., Elaheh Arabmakki
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Stream processing frameworks are designed to process the streaming data that arrives in time. An example of such data is stream of emails that a user receives every day. Most of the real world data streams are also imbalanced as is in the stream of emails, which contains few spam emails compared to a lot of legitimate emails. The classification of the imbalanced data stream is challenging due to the several reasons: First of all, data streams are huge and they can not be stored in the memory for one time processing. Second, if the data is imbalanced, the accuracy …
Towards Multipurpose Readability Assessment, Ion Madrazo
Towards Multipurpose Readability Assessment, Ion Madrazo
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Readability refers to the ease with which a reader can understand a text. Automatic readability assessment has been widely studied over the past 50 years. However, most of the studies focus on the development of tools that apply either to a single language, domain, or document type. This supposes duplicate efforts for both developers, who need to integrate multiple tools in their systems, and final users, who have to deal with incompatibilities among the readability scales of different tools. In this manuscript, we present MultiRead, a multipurpose readability assessment tool capable of predicting the reading difficulty of texts of varied …
When The System Becomes Your Personal Docent: Curated Book Recommendations, Nevena Dragovic
When The System Becomes Your Personal Docent: Curated Book Recommendations, Nevena Dragovic
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Curation is the act of selecting, organizing, and presenting content most often guided by professional or expert knowledge. While many popular applications have attempted to emulate this process by turning users into curators, we put an accent on a recommendation system which can leverage multiple data sources to accomplish the curation task. We introduce QBook, a recommender that acts as a personal docent by identifying and suggesting books tailored to the various preferences of each individual user. The goal of the designed system is to address several limitations often associated with recommenders in order to provide diverse and personalized …
A Certificateless One-Way Group Key Agreement Protocol For Point-To-Point Email Encryption, Srisarguru Sridhar
A Certificateless One-Way Group Key Agreement Protocol For Point-To-Point Email Encryption, Srisarguru Sridhar
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Over the years, email has evolved and grown to one of the most widely used form of communication between individuals and organizations. Nonetheless, the current information technology standards do not value the significance of email security in today's technologically advanced world. Not until recently, email services such as Yahoo and Google started to encrypt emails for privacy protection. Despite that, the encrypted emails will be decrypted and stored in the email service provider's servers as backup. If the server is hacked or compromised, it can lead to leakage and modification of one's email. Therefore, there is a strong need for …

Deep Feature Transfer Learning In Combination With Traditional Features Predicts Survival Among Patients With Lung Adenocarcinoma, Rahul Paul, Samuel H. Hawkings, Matthew B. Schabath, Robert J. Gilies, Lawrence O. Hall, Dmitry Goldgof
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related deaths in the USA. It can be detected and diagnosed using computed tomography images. For an automated classifier, identifying predictive features from medical images is a key concern. Deep feature extraction using pretrained convolutional neural networks (CNNs) has recently been successfully applied in some image domains. Here, we applied a pretrained CNN to extract deep features from 40 computed tomography images, with contrast, of non-small cell adenocarcinoma lung cancer, and combined deep features with traditional image features and trained classifiers to predict short- and long-term survivors. We experimented with several pretrained …

Soteria: A Persuasive Esecurity Assistant, Punica Bhardwaj
Theses and Dissertations
“…security is only as good as the weakest link, and people are the weakest link in the chain.” – B Schneier, 2002 Humans are often referred to as the “weakest link” in the security chain because of the poor security decisions taken by them. There can be many reasons for these decisions, such as lack of understandability of the software, lack of education, and lack of relevant information required to do that particular action. In this Thesis, we focus on the lack of relevant information required at the time of performing the action. In order to provide the user with …
Digital Quorum Sensing For Self-Organizing Malware, Mark E. Fioravanti Ii
Digital Quorum Sensing For Self-Organizing Malware, Mark E. Fioravanti Ii
Theses and Dissertations
INTRODUCTION: Malware authors present an interesting problem for the security community as they evolve and adapt to overcome network and host defenses. The determined adversary is a special class of malware author who may attempt to disrupt national interests. These adversaries may seek potentially novel Command and Control (C2) channels to coordinate their activities. Isolated and air-gapped networks pose an interesting challenge that these adversaries must adapt to in order to maintain persistence on these networks. In this work we propose that a determined adversary may seek to implement a digital quorum sensing system inspired by the quorum sensing systems …

Validating Social Media Data For Automatic Persona Generation, Jisun An, Haewoon Kwak, Bernard J Jansen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Using personas during interactive design has considerable potential for product and content development. Unfortunately, personas have typically been a fairly static technique. In this research, we validate an approach for creating personas in real time, based on analysis of actual social media data in an effort to automate the generation of personas. We validate that social media data can be implemented as an approach for automating generating personas in real time using actual YouTube social media data from a global media corporation that produces online digital content. Using the organization's YouTube channel, we collect demographic data, customer interactions, and topical …
Mixed-Criticality Scheduling To Minimize Makespan, Sanjoy K. Baruah, Arvind Easwaran, Zhishan Guo
Mixed-Criticality Scheduling To Minimize Makespan, Sanjoy K. Baruah, Arvind Easwaran, Zhishan Guo
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
In the mixed-criticality job model, each job is characterized by two execution time parameters, representing a smaller (less conservative) estimate and a larger (more conservative) estimate on its actual, unknown, execution time. Each job is further classified as being either less critical or more critical. The desired execution semantics are that all jobs should execute correctly provided all jobs complete upon being allowed to execute for up to the smaller of their execution time estimates, whereas if some jobs need to execute beyond their smaller execution time estimates (but not beyond their larger execution time estimates), then only the jobs …
Automatic Assessment Of Environmental Hazards For Fall Prevention Using Smart-Cameras, Jeffrey Kutchka
Automatic Assessment Of Environmental Hazards For Fall Prevention Using Smart-Cameras, Jeffrey Kutchka
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As technology advances in the field of Computer Vision, new applications will emerge. One device that has emerged is the smart-camera, a camera attached to an embedded system that can perform routines a regular camera could not, such as object or event detection. In this thesis we describe a smart-camera system we designed, implemented, and evaluated for fall prevention monitoring of at-risk people while in bed, whether it be for a hospital patient, nursing home resident, or at home elderly resident. The camera will give a nurse or caregiver environmental awareness of the at-risk person and notify them when that …
An Open Source Approach To Serve A Large Number Of Computer Users Using Block-Level Streaming, Max D. Torres
An Open Source Approach To Serve A Large Number Of Computer Users Using Block-Level Streaming, Max D. Torres
Theses and Dissertations
There are several options for providing a large number of computers to users for their daily tasks. A typical setup may consist of a large number of computers where each relies on an HDD consisting of the required software, sufficient RAM, a capable CPU that meets the software requirements, and a stable network connection. This thesis proposes the use of the open-source AoE protocol to stream an OS to a user computer from a central server. Since the streaming is done from a well-protected central storage, the AoE protocol is less prone to failures compared to the traditional approach based …
A Self-Organized Approach For Detecting Communities In Networks, Ben Collingsworth
A Self-Organized Approach For Detecting Communities In Networks, Ben Collingsworth
Theses and Dissertations
The community structure of networks reveals hidden information about the whole network structure that cannot be discerned using other topological properties. Yet, the importance of identifying community structure in networks to many fields such as medicine, social sciences and national security, calls for better approaches for performing this identification. The prevalent community detection algorithms, such as the one proposed by Girvan and Newman, utilize a centralized approach that is unlikely to scale to very large networks and does not handle dynamic networks. Further, existing algorithms provide limited information regarding community overlap, where an individual participates in multiple communities. We propose …

This paper proposes a new multi-value sequence generated by utilizing primitive element, trace, and power residue symbol over odd characteristic finite field. In detail, let p and k be an odd prime number as the characteristic and a prime factor of p-1, respectively. Our proposal generates k-value sequence T={ti | ti=fk(Tr(ωi)+A)}, where ω is a primitive element in the extension field $\F{p}{m}$, Tr(⋅) is the trace function that maps $\F{p}{m} \rightarrow \f{p}$, A is a non-zero scalar in the prime field $\f{p}$, and fk(⋅) is a certain mapping function based on k-th power residue symbol. Thus, the proposed sequence has …

Zero++: Harnessing The Power Of Zero Appearances To Detect Anomalies In Large-Scale Data Sets, Guansong Pang, Kai Ming Ting, David Albrecht, Huidong Jin
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper introduces a new unsupervised anomaly detector called ZERO++ which employs the number of zero appearances in subspaces to detect anomalies in categorical data. It is unique in that it works in regions of subspaces that are not occupied by data; whereas existing methods work in regions occupied by data. ZERO++ examines only a small number of low dimensional subspaces to successfully identify anomalies. Unlike existing frequencybased algorithms, ZERO++ does not involve subspace pattern searching. We show that ZERO++ is better than or comparable with the state-of-the-art anomaly detection methods over a wide range of real-world categorical and numeric …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Automatically identifying characters in movies has attracted researchers' interest and led to several significant and interesting applications. However, due to the vast variation in character appearance as well as the weakness and ambiguity of available annotation, it is still a challenging problem. In this paper, we investigate this problem with the supervision of actor-character name correspondence provided by the movie cast. Our proposed framework, namely, Cast2Face, is featured by: 1) we restrict the assigned names within the set of character names in the cast; 2) for each character, by using the corresponding actor and movie name as keywords, we retrieve …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The Orienteering Problem (OP) has received a lot of attention in the past few decades. The OP is a routing problem in which the goal is to determine a subset of nodes to visit, and in which order, so that the total collected score is maximized and a given time budget is not exceeded. A number of typical variants has been studied, such as the Team OP, the (Team) OP with Time Windows and the Time Dependent OP. Recently, a number of new variants of the OP was introduced, such as the Stochastic OP, the Generalized OP, the Arc OP, …

Answering Why-Not And Why Questions On Reverse Top-K Queries, Qing Liu, Yunjun Gao, Gang Chen, Baihua Zheng, Linlin Zhou
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Why-not and why questions can be posed by database users to seek clarifications on unexpected query results. Specifically, why-not questions aim to explain why certain expected tuples are absent from the query results, while why questions try to clarify why certain unexpected tuples are present in the query results. This paper systematically explores the why-not and why questions on reverse top-k queries, owing to its importance in multi-criteria decision making. We first formalize why-not questions on reverse top-k queries, which try to include the missing objects in the reverse top-k query results, and then, we propose a unified framework called …

Processing Incomplete K Nearest Neighbor Search, Xiaoye Miao, Yunjun Gao, Gang Chen, Baihua Zheng, Huiyong Cui
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Given a setS of multidimensional objects and a query object q, a k nearest neighbor (kNN) query finds from S the k closest objects to q. This query is a fundamental problem in database, data mining, and information retrieval research. It plays an important role in a wide spectrum of real applications such as image recognition and location-based services. However, due to the failure of data transmission devices, improper storage, and accidental loss, incomplete data exist widely in those applications, where some dimensional values of data items are missing. In this paper, we systematically study incomplete k nearest neighbor (IkNN) …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In a large indoor environment such as a sports arena or convention center, smooth egress of crowd after an event can be seriously affected if infrastructure such as elevators and escalators break down. In this paper, we propose a novel crowd simulator known as SIM-DISRUPT for simulating egress scenarios in non-emergency situations. To surface the impact of disrupted infrastructure on the egress of crowd, SIM-DISRUPT includes features that allow users to specify selective disruptions as well as strategies for controlling the distribution and egress choices of crowd. Using SIM-DISRUPT, we investigate effects of crowd distribution, egress choices and infrastructure disruptions …

A Privacy-Preserving Outsourced Functional Computation Framework Across Large-Scale Multiple Encrypted Domains, Ximeng Liu, Baodong Qin, Robert H. Deng, Rongxing Lu, Jianfeng Ma
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we propose a framework for privacy-preserving outsourced functional computation across large-scale multiple encrypted domains, which we refer to as POFD. With POFD, a user can obtain the output of a function computed over encrypted data from multiple domains while protecting the privacy of the function itself, its input and its output. Specifically, we introduce two notions of POFD, the basic POFD and its enhanced version, in order to tradeoff the levels of privacy protection and performance. We present three protocols, named Multi-domain Secure Multiplication protocol (MSM), Secure Exponent Calculation protocol with private Base (SECB), and Secure Exponent …
Lossy Key Encapsulation Mechanism And Its Applications, Yamin Liu, Xianhui Lu, Bao Li, Haiyang Xue
Lossy Key Encapsulation Mechanism And Its Applications, Yamin Liu, Xianhui Lu, Bao Li, Haiyang Xue
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We introduce a new notion, lossy key encapsulation mechanism (lossy KEM), which enhances the notion of key encapsulation mechanism with lossiness, and can be more efficient than lossy trapdoor functions. We show that lossy KEM can be constructed from lossy trapdoor functions, lossy trapdoor relations, and entropic projective hashing. Using lossy KEM as a building block, several previous constructions of lossy encryption and deterministic public key encryption can be generalized and improved in efficiency.
Expectation-Centered Analytics For Instructors And Students, Suzanne L. Dazo
Expectation-Centered Analytics For Instructors And Students, Suzanne L. Dazo
Student Work
Learning analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis, and reporting of data about learners and their contexts. An outcome and primary goal of learning analytics should be to inform instructors, who are primary stakeholders, so that they can make effective decisions in their courses. To support instructor inquiry, I apply theory on reflective practice to learning analytic development. Articulating an instructor's pedagogical expectations is one way to begin facilitating a reflective practice. Expectations based on instructor goals serve as a natural next step and the springboard from which data can be collected. I hypothesize that a learning analytic that encodes and …

Myth Or Reality? Crowdsourcing As A Complex Problemsolving Model: Evidence From Software Developed By The Crowd And Professionals, Abhishek Tripathi
Student Work
Crowdsourcing is a problem-solving model. Conventional theory suggests that solving complex problems is a province of professionals, people with sufficient knowledge about the domain. Prior literature indicated that the crowd is also a great source for solving complex problems. However, there is a lack of experimental research to support that crowdsourcing is a useful model for complex problem-solving (CPS), especially in the software development context. The broad goal of this dissertation is to address this research gap and improve understanding of crowdsourcing as a viable and effective CPS model. This research proposed and tested a research model of perceived quality …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Public key encryption with keyword search (PEKS) is a well-known cryptographic primitive for secure searchable data encryption in cloud storage. Unfortunately, it is inherently subject to the (inside) offline keyword guessing attack (KGA), which is against the data privacy of users. Existing countermeasures for dealing with this security issue mainly suffer from low efficiency and are impractical for real applications. In this paper, we provide a practical and applicable treatment on this security vulnerability by formalizing a new PEKS system named server-aided public key encryption with keyword search (SA-PEKS). In SA-PEKS, to generate the keyword ciphertext/trapdoor, the user needs to …

Iterated Random Oracle: A Universal Approach For Finding Loss In Security Reduction, Fuchun Guo, Willy Susilo, Yi Mu, Rongmao Chen, Jianchang Lai, Guomin Yang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The indistinguishability security of a public-key cryptosystem can be reduced to a computational hard assumption in the random oracle model, where the solution to a computational hard problem is hidden in one of the adversary’s queries to the random oracle. Usually, there is a finding loss in finding the correct solution from the query set, especially when the decisional variant of the computational problem is also hard. The problem of finding loss must be addressed towards tight(er) reductions under this type. In EUROCRYPT 2008, Cash, Kiltz and Shoup proposed a novel approach using a trapdoor test that can solve the …

An Agent-Based Approach To Human Migration Movement, Larry Lin, Kathleen M. Carley, Shih-Fen Cheng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
How are the populations of the world likely to shift? Which countries will be impacted by sea-level rise? This paper uses a country-level agent-based dynamic network model to examine shifts in population given network relations among countries, which influences overall population change. Some of the networks considered include: alliance networks, shared language networks, economic influence networks, and proximity networks. Validation of model is done for migration probabilities between countries, as well as for country populations and distributions. The proposed framework provides a way to explore the interaction between climate change and policy factors at a global scale.

Traffic Simulation Model For Port Planning And Congestion Prevention, Baoxiang Li, Kar Way Tan, Trong Khiem Tran
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Effective management of land-side transportation provides the competitive advantage to port terminal operators in improving services and efficient use of limited space in an urban port. We present a hybrid simulation model that combines traffic-flow modeling and discrete-event simulation for land-side port planning and evaluation of traffic conditions for a number of what-if scenarios. We design our model based on a real-world case of a bulk cargo port. The problem is interesting due to complexity of heterogeneous closed-looped internal vehicles and external vehicles traveling in spaces with very limited traffic regulation (no traffic lights, no traffic wardens) and the traffic …

D-Watch: Embracing "Bad" Multipaths For Device-Free Localization With Cots Rfid Devices, Ju Wang, Jie Xiong, Hongbo Jiang, Xiaojiang Chen, Dingyi Fang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Device-free localization, which does not require any device attached to the target is playing a critical role in many applications such as intrusion detection, elderly monitoring, etc. This paper introduces D-Watch, a device-free system built on top of low cost commodity-off-the-shelf (COTS) RFID hardware. Unlike previous works which consider multipaths detrimental, D-Watch leverages the "bad" multipaths to provide a decimeter level localization accuracy without offline training. D-Watch harnesses the angle-of-arrival (AoA) information from the RFID tags' backscatter signals. The key intuition is that whenever a target blocks a signal's propagation path, the signal power experiences a drop which can be …
