Alignment For Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Gas Chromatography (Gcxgc) With Global, Low-Order Polynomial Transformations, Davis Rempe, Stephen Reichenbach, Stephen Scott
UCARE: Research Products
As columns age and differ between systems, retention times for GC x GC may vary between runs. In order to properly analyze chromatograms, it is often desirable to align chromatographic features between chromatograms. This alignment can be characterized by a mapping of retention times from one chromatogram to the retention times of another chromatogram. Alignment methods can be classified as global or local, i.e., whether the geometric differences between chromatograms are characterized by a single function for the entire chromatogram or by a combination of many functions for different regions of the chromatogram. Previous work has shown that global, low-degree …

The Parallelization And Optimization Of The N-Body Problem Using Openmp And Openmpi, Nicholas J. Carugati
Student Publications
The focus of this research is exploring the efficient ways we can implement the NBody problem. The N-Body problem, in the field of physics, is a problem in which predicts or simulates the movements of planets and how they interact with each other gravitationally. For this research, we are viewing if the simulation can execute efficiently by delegating the heavy computational work through different cores of a CPU. The approach that is being used to figure this out is by integrating the parallelization API OpenMP and the message-passing library OpenMPI into the code. Rather than all the code executing on …

Purpose
Achieving a reduction in scan time with minimal inter-slice signal leakage is one of the significant obstacles in parallel MR imaging. In fMRI, multiband-imaging techniques accelerate data acquisition by simultaneously magnetizing the spatial frequency spectrum of multiple slices. The SPECS model eliminates the consequential inter-slice signal leakage from the slice unaliasing, while maintaining an optimal reduction in scan time and activation statistics in fMRI studies.
Materials and Methods
When the combined k-space array is inverse Fourier reconstructed, the resulting aliased image is separated into the un-aliased slices through a least squares estimator. Without the additional spatial information from …

Social-Context Middleware For At-Risk Veterans, Nadiyah Frances Johnson
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Many veterans undergo challenges when reintegrating into civilian society. These challenges include readapting to their communities and families. During the reintegration process veterans have difficulties finding employment, education or resources that aid veteran health. Research suggests that these challenges often result in veterans encountering serious mental illness. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a common mental disease that veterans often develop. This disease impacts between 15-20% of veterans. PTSD increases the likelihood of veterans engaging in high risk behaviors which may consist of impulsivity, substance abuse, and angry outbursts. These behaviors raise the veterans’ risk of becoming violent and lashing out …

Least-Squares Mapping From Kinematic Data To Acoustic Synthesis Parameters For Rehabilitative Acoustic Learning, Xiangyu Zhou
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Thousands of people suffer from dysarthria resulting from neurological injury of the motor component of the motor-speech system, and need to rely on alternative methods to communicate in daily life, such as body language or text-to-speech [1] . However, there are currently very few effective rehabilitative therapies for helping these patients improve their speech. Because of this, research is needed to develop better rehabilitative therapies. One such area of research is the use of involuntary acoustic learning. The Speech and Swallowing lab at Marquette University has an Electromagnetic Articulography (EMA) system to collect kinematic data and a software system called …
Biometrics-Based Dynamic Authentication For Secure Services, Saif Mohammed Saeed Abdulla Al Aryani
Biometrics-Based Dynamic Authentication For Secure Services, Saif Mohammed Saeed Abdulla Al Aryani
Theses
This thesis proposes a secure authentication protocol against physical session hijacking attacks. In client/server technology, users establish sessions to access the services offered by the servers. However, using physical session hijacking attacks, malicious users may physically take control of ongoing sessions. Malicious users also can establish sessions with servers using stolen passwords. In both cases, the server will be communicating with the wrong user who pretends to be the real user. The goal of this authentication protocol is to continuously and dynamically ensure that during an ongoing session the current session’s user is himself the real person that is known …

The Anisotropy Of Hexagonal Close-Packed And Liquid Interface Free Energy Using Molecular Dynamics Simulations Based On Modified Embedded-Atom Method, Ebrahim Asadi, Mohsen Asle Zaeem
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This work aims to comprehensively study the anisotropy of the hexagonal close-packed (HCP)-liquid interface free energy using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations based on the modified-embedded atom method (MEAM). As a case study, all the simulations are performed for Magnesium (Mg). The solid-liquid coexisting approach is used to accurately calculate the melting point and melting properties. Then, the capillary fluctuation method (CFM) is used to determine the HCP-liquid interface free energy (γ) and anisotropy parameters. In CFM, a continuous order parameter is employed to accurately locate the HCP-liquid interface location, and the HCP symmetry-adapted spherical harmonics are used to expand γ …

Gesture Based Non-Obstacle Interaction On Mobile Computing Devices For Dirty Working Environment, William B. Huynh
Open Access Theses
The dominant way of interacting with tablets, smartphones, or wearable devices are through touchscreen or touchpad, which requires the user to physically touch the device’s screen. However, in certain situation, for example, a dirty working environment, touching is not ideal or feasible. This study examined a new method that allows for a non-touch interaction by using the devices’ back camera along with simple gesture to simulate mouse clicking. Cameras are used to capture motion-based gestures coupled with object detection, achieving a non-touch interaction. With human subject evaluation, the researcher found that using the back camera on mobile devices for gesture …

A Study Of How Chinese Ink Painting Features Can Be Applied To 3d Scenes And Models In Real-Time Rendering, Muning Cao
Open Access Theses
Past research findings addressed mature techniques for non-photorealistic rendering. However, research findings indicate that there is little information dealing with efficient methods to simulate Chinese ink painting features in rendering 3D scenes. Considering that Chinese ink painting has achieved many worldwide awards, the potential to effectively and automatically develop 3D animations and games in this style indicates a need for the development of appropriate technology for the future market.
The goal of this research is about rendering 3D meshes in a Chinese ink painting style which is both appealing and realistic. Specifically, how can the output image appear similar to …
Improving Structure Mcmc For Bayesian Networks Through Markov Blanket Resampling, Chengwei Su, Mark E. Borsuk
Improving Structure Mcmc For Bayesian Networks Through Markov Blanket Resampling, Chengwei Su, Mark E. Borsuk
Dartmouth Scholarship
Algorithms for inferring the structure of Bayesian networks from data have become an increasingly popular method for uncovering the direct and indirect influences among variables in complex systems. A Bayesian approach to structure learning uses posterior probabilities to quantify the strength with which the data and prior knowledge jointly support each possible graph feature. Existing Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms for estimating these posterior probabilities are slow in mixing and convergence, especially for large networks. We present a novel Markov blanket resampling (MBR) scheme that intermittently reconstructs the Markov blanket of nodes, thus allowing the sampler to more effectively …
Securing The Integrity Of The Power Distribution System For Smart Grid Applications, Hosam Yousef Hittini
Securing The Integrity Of The Power Distribution System For Smart Grid Applications, Hosam Yousef Hittini
Theses
The distribution system is one of the main components in a smart grid, readings are transferred from the distribution substations to the control center. Compromising transferred system data will result in drawing wrong conclusions about current operation status at the control center. Which leads to sending wrong operational commands that may result in very serious consequences.
Firstly, we propose a scalable communications architecture for future smart grid distribution systems (i.e. Security Aware Distribution System Architecture - SADSA). The architecture is adaptable to use Wi-Fi or other technologies to transfer smart grid information. The architecture is studied from various angles. Both …

Crowdsourcing: A Building Block For Smart Cities, Archan Misra
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This talk will present a vision, and real-world examples, of the use of mobile crowdsourcing for building a variety of smart-city applications and services. I will first describe the paradigm of centrally-coordinated crowdsourcing, where the crowdsourcing platform intelligently recommends different tasks to different candidate workers, and contrast it with today's prevalent paradigm, where workers select and perform tasks in an uncoordinated, opportunistic fashion. I will then describe real-world examples of such crowdsourcing (and participatory sensing) for two applications: (a) smart campus monitoring and (b) last-mile urban logistics (package pickup and delivery). The talk will also describe the opportunities and open …
