Semeo: A Semantic Equivalence Analysis Framework For Obfuscated Android Applications, Zhen Hu
Semeo: A Semantic Equivalence Analysis Framework For Obfuscated Android Applications, Zhen Hu
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Software repackaging is a common approach for creating malware. In this approach, malware authors inject malicious payloads into legitimate applications; then, to ren- der security analysis more difficult, they obfuscate most or all of the code. This forces analysts to spend a large amount of effort filtering out benign obfuscated methods in order to locate potentially malicious methods for further analysis. If an effective mechanism for filtering out benign obfuscated methods were available, the number of methods that must be analyzed could be reduced, allowing analysts to be more productive. In this thesis, we introduce SEMEO, a highly effective and …
Robotic Arm Tracing Curves Recognized By Camera, Timothy Karl Findling
Robotic Arm Tracing Curves Recognized By Camera, Timothy Karl Findling
Theses and Dissertations
Applications such like soldering require robot arms to follow the soldering line as present on a surface. We assume here that the surface to be soldered is remote from the robotic arm, that the soldering is performed via a laser beam, and that the line to be followed can be a curve that may self-intersect (e.g. a crack in the material). We describe research conducted using a robotic arm pointing a laser for tracing a remote line on a smooth surface. The image of the line is converted to a one pixel width skeleton line generated from images using a …
Indoor Scene Localization To Fight Sex Trafficking In Hotels, Abigail Stylianou
Indoor Scene Localization To Fight Sex Trafficking In Hotels, Abigail Stylianou
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Images are key to fighting sex trafficking. They are: (a) used to advertise for sex services,(b) shared among criminal networks, and (c) connect a person in an image to the place where the image was taken. This work explores the ability to link images to indoor places in order to support the investigation and prosecution of sex trafficking. We propose and develop a framework that includes a database of open-source information available on the Internet, a crowd-sourcing approach to gathering additional images, and explore a variety of matching approaches based both on hand-tuned features such as SIFT and learned features …

The aim of the present study was to investigate whether genetic markers considered risk factors for metabolic syndromes, including dyslipidemia, obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), can be applied to a Northeastern Mexican population. A total of 37 families were analyzed for 63 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), and the age, body mass index (BMI), glucose tolerance values and blood lipid levels, including those of cholesterol, low‑density lipoprotein (LDL), very LDL (VLDL), high‑density lipoprotein (HDL) and triglycerides were evaluated. Three genetic markers previously associated with metabolic syndromes were identified in the sample population, including KCNJ11, TCF7L2 and HNF4A. The KCNJ11 …

Preliminary Investigation Of Walking Motion Using A Combination Of Image And Signal Processing, Bradley Schneider, Tanvi Banerjee
Kno.e.sis Publications
We present the results of analyzing gait motion in first-person video taken from a commercially available wearable camera embedded in a pair of glasses. The video is analyzed with three different computer vision methods to extract motion vectors from different gait sequences from four individuals for comparison against a manually annotated ground truth dataset. Using a combination of signal processing and computer vision techniques, gait features are extracted to identify the walking pace of the individual wearing the camera as well as validated using the ground truth dataset. Our preliminary results indicate that the extraction of activity from the video …

Assessing Data Quality In Citizen Science, Margaret Kosmala, Andrea Wiggins, Alexandra Swanson, Brooke Simmons
Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications
Ecological and environmental citizen‐science projects have enormous potential to advance scientific knowledge, influence policy, and guide resource management by producing datasets that would otherwise be infeasible to generate. However, this potential can only be realized if the datasets are of high quality. While scientists are often skeptical of the ability of unpaid volunteers to produce accurate datasets, a growing body of publications clearly shows that diverse types of citizen‐science projects can produce data with accuracy equal to or surpassing that of professionals. Successful projects rely on a suite of methods to boost data accuracy and account for bias, including iterative …
Radiative Transfer Using Path Integrals For Multiple Scattering In Participating Media, Paul Michael Kilgo
Radiative Transfer Using Path Integrals For Multiple Scattering In Participating Media, Paul Michael Kilgo
All Dissertations
The theory of light transport forms the basis by which many computer graphic renderers are implemented. The more general theory of radiative transfer has applications in the wider scientific community, including ocean and atmospheric science, medicine, and even geophysics. Accurately capturing multiple scattering physics of light transport is an issue of great concern. Multiple scattering is responsible for indirect lighting, which is desired for images where high realism is the goal. Additionally, multiple scattering is quite important for scientific applications as it is a routine phenomenon. Computationally, it is a difficult process to model. Many have developed solutions for hard …
Estimating Length Statistics Of Aggregate Fried Potato Product Via Electromagnetic Radiation Attenuation, Jesse Lovitt
Estimating Length Statistics Of Aggregate Fried Potato Product Via Electromagnetic Radiation Attenuation, Jesse Lovitt
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
This work investigates the feasibility of using non-destructive testing, in particular radiation tomography, to recover length statistics from aggregates of fried batonnet cut potato. Non-destructive testing comprises a variety of useful techniques for determining properties of an object that might otherwise require altering or destroying the object physically. Tomography is a common form of non-destructive testing used primarily to infer properties internal to an object. This process involves exposing the object of interest to radiation and detecting the quantity of radiation energy that penetrates the object, usually resulting in a grey scale image.
To do this, an artificial data pipeline …
Just In Time Assembly (Jita) - A Run Time Interpretation Approach For Achieving Productivity Of Creating Custom Accelerators In Fpgas, Sen Ma
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The reconfigurable computing community has yet to be successful in allowing programmers to access FPGAs through traditional software development flows. Existing barriers that prevent programmers from using FPGAs include: 1) knowledge of hardware programming models, 2) the need to work within the vendor specific CAD tools and hardware synthesis. This thesis presents a series of published papers that explore different aspects of a new approach being developed to remove the barriers and enable programmers to compile accelerators on next generation reconfigurable manycore architectures. The approach is entitled Just In Time Assembly (JITA) of hardware accelerators. The approach has been defined …

Studies With Dynamic Nuclear Imaging Image Reconstruction Algorithm, Haoran Chang
Theses and Dissertations
Non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) is a useful method for those non-negative multivariate data. In nuclear imaging, NMF, which is also called factor analysis, is used to analyze the 4D image of positron emission tomography and single positron emission computed tomography. Normally, we use factor analysis of dynamic structure (FADS) for the dynamic reconstruction [1]. However, this reconstruction algorithm is extremely dependent on the initial data, which means the result may be unstable when the initial data is not good enough. There are several ways for the initializing, such as splined initialized (SIFADS) [2] and clustering initialized (CIFA) [3][4]. In this …
Proactive Approach For The Prevention Of Ddos Attacks In Cloud Computing Environments, Brad Alshehry
Proactive Approach For The Prevention Of Ddos Attacks In Cloud Computing Environments, Brad Alshehry
Theses and Dissertations
Contemporary security systems attempt to provide protection against distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks; however, they mostly use a variety of computing and hardware resources for load distribution and request delays. As a result, ordinary users and website visitors experience timeouts, captchas, and lowspeed connections. In this paper, we propose a new multilayer system for protection against DDoS in the cloud that utilizes Threat Intelligence techniques and a proactive approach to detect traffic behavior anomalies. The first layer of the model analyzes the source IP address in the header of incoming traffic packets and the second layer analyzes the speed of requests …
On Path Consistency For Binary Constraint Satisfaction Problems, Christopher G. Reeson
On Path Consistency For Binary Constraint Satisfaction Problems, Christopher G. Reeson
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs) provide a flexible and powerful framework for modeling and solving many decision problems of practical importance. Consistency properties and the algorithms for enforcing them on a problem instance are at the heart of Constraint Processing and best distinguish this area from other areas concerned with the same combinatorial problems. In this thesis, we study path consistency (PC) and investigate several algorithms for enforcing it on binary finite CSPs. We also study algorithms for enforcing consistency properties that are related to PC but are stronger or weaker than PC.
We identify and correct errors in the literature …
Using Software Testing Techniques To Infer Biological Models, Mikaela Cashman
Using Software Testing Techniques To Infer Biological Models, Mikaela Cashman
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Years of research in software testing has given us novel ways to reason about and test the behavior of complex software systems that contain hundreds of thousands of lines of code. Many of these techniques have been inspired by nature such as genetic algorithms, swarm intelligence, and ant colony optimization. However, they use a unidirectional analogy – taking from nature without giving back.
In this thesis we invert this view and ask if we can utilize techniques from testing and modeling of highly-configurable software systems to aid in the emerging field of systems biology which aims to model and predict …
Towards Building A Review Recommendation System That Trains Novices By Leveraging The Actions Of Experts, Shilpa Khanal
Towards Building A Review Recommendation System That Trains Novices By Leveraging The Actions Of Experts, Shilpa Khanal
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Online reviews increase consumer visits, increase the time spent on the website, and create a sense of community among the frequent shoppers. Because of the importance of online reviews, online retailers such as Amazon.com and eOpinions provide detailed guidelines for writing reviews. However, though these guidelines provide instructions on how to write reviews, reviewers are not provided instructions for writing product-specific reviews. As a result, poorly-written reviews are abound and a customer may need to scroll through a large number of reviews, which could be up to 6000 pixels down from the top of the page, in order to find …
The Development Of An Automated Testing Framework For Data-Driven Testing Utilizing The Uml Testing Profile, James Edward Hearn
The Development Of An Automated Testing Framework For Data-Driven Testing Utilizing The Uml Testing Profile, James Edward Hearn
Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations
The development of increasingly-complex Web 2.0 applications, along with a rise in end-user expectations, have not only made the testing and quality assurance processes of web application development an increasingly-important part of the SDLC, but have also made these processes more complex and resource-intensive. One way to effectively test these applications is by implementing an automated testing solution along with manual testing, as automation solutions have been shown to increase the total amount of testing that can be performed, and help testing team achieve consistency in their testing efforts. The difficulty, though, lies in how to best go about developing …

Coherence, Richness And Cognitive Absorption In Website Design, L. Visinescu, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Kaplan’s theory on environmental preferences can offer a holistic perspective on cognitive absorption in ecommerce website design. Drawing on Kaplan’s theory, this paper proposes that coherence and richness of a website can enhance cognitive absorption of users. The findings from our study not only support the hypotheses, but also suggest that coherence and richness can reach an optimal proportion in website design, after which they are inversely correlated.

Several important and fundamental aspects of disease genetics models have yet to be described. One such property is the relationship of disease association statistics at a marker site closely linked to a disease causing site. A complete description of this two-locus system is of particular importance to experimental efforts to fine map association signals for complex diseases. Here, we present a simple relationship between disease association statistics and the decline of linkage disequilibrium from a causal site. Specifically, the ratio of Chi-square disease association statistics at a marker site and causal site is equivalent to the standard measure of pairwise …

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is a clinically and anatomically severe form of congenital heart disease (CHD). Although prior studies suggest that HLHS has a complex genetic inheritance, its etiology remains largely unknown. The goal of this study was to characterize a risk gene in HLHS and its effect on HLHS etiology and outcome. We performed next-generation sequencing on a multigenerational family with a high prevalence of CHD/HLHS, identifying a rare variant in the α-myosin heavy chain (MYH6) gene. A case-control study of 190 unrelated HLHS subjects was then performed and compared with the 1000 Genomes Project. Damaging …

A Note On The Howson Property In Inverse Semigroups, Peter R. Jones
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
An algebra has the Howson property if the intersection of any two finitely generated subalgebras is again finitely generated. A simple necessary and sufficient condition is given for the Howson property to hold on an inverse semigroup with finitely many idempotents. In addition, it is shown that any monogenic inverse semigroup has the Howson property.

The rapid ageing population is posing challenges to many countries all over the world, particularly in the provision of care to the growing number of elderly who are living alone. Allowing the elderly to age-in-place, i.e., live safely and independently in the comfort of their own homes is a model that can potentially address the resource constraint in health and community care faced by many nations. To make this model a reality and provide appropriate and timely care to the elderly, unobtrusive eldercare monitoring systems (EMS) are being deployed in real homes to continuously monitor the activity of the elderly. …
Algorithms For Learning The Structure Of Monotone And Nonmonotone Sum-Product Networks, Aaron W. Dennis
Algorithms For Learning The Structure Of Monotone And Nonmonotone Sum-Product Networks, Aaron W. Dennis
Theses and Dissertations
The sum-product network (SPN) is a recently-proposed generative, probabilistic model that is guaranteed to compute any joint or any marginal probability in time linear in the size of the model. An SPN is represented as a directed, acyclic graph (DAG) of sum and product nodes, with univariate probability distributions at the leaves. It is important to learn the structure of this DAG since the set of distributions representable by an SPN is constrained by it. We present the first batch structure learning algorithm for SPNs and show its advantage over learning the parameters of an SPN with fixed architecture. We …
A Mixed Methods Study: Evaluating The Relationship Of Project Manager Competencies And It Project Management Methodologies, Keith A. Mcdermott
A Mixed Methods Study: Evaluating The Relationship Of Project Manager Competencies And It Project Management Methodologies, Keith A. Mcdermott
Open Access Theses
Determining skillsets that are particularly important to the development of an effective project manager can be useful for a variety of applications. These applications range from the hiring of a new project manager for an organization to continued training for current employees. Past research has called upon current project managers to rate what skillsets they see as important to the cultivation of an optimal or effective project manager. Additional research has expanded this idea to determine how skillsets vary between project managers and functional managers (El-Sabaa, 2001). While this research is certainly important, skillset grouping can be further explored. This …
Deep Collective Inference, John A. Moore
Deep Collective Inference, John A. Moore
Open Access Theses
Collective inference is widely used to improve classification in network datasets. However, despite recent advances in deep learning and the successes of recurrent neural networks (RNNs), researchers have only just recently begun to study how to apply RNNs to heterogeneous graph and network datasets. There has been recent work on using RNNs for unsupervised learning in networks (e.g., graph clustering, node embedding) and for prediction (e.g., link prediction, graph classification), but there has been little work on using RNNs for node-based relational classification tasks. In this paper, we provide an end-to-end learning framework using RNNs for collective inference. Our main …
Inter-Color Npr Lines: A Comparison Of Rendering Techniques, Donald G. Herring
Inter-Color Npr Lines: A Comparison Of Rendering Techniques, Donald G. Herring
Open Access Theses
Renders of 3D scenes can feature lines drawn automatically along sharp edges between colored areas on object textures, in order to imitate certain conventional styles of hand-drawn line art. However, such "inter-color lines" have been studied very little. Two algorithms for rendering these lines were compared in this study - a faster one utilizing lines baked into the textures themselves and a more complex one that dynamically generated the lines in image space on each frame - for the purpose of determining which of the two better imitated traditional, hand-drawn art styles and which was more visually appealing. Test subjects …

It was then tested on 20 participants categorized as amateurs who had basic 3D/ CAD modeling experience and 20 participants categorized as the experts who had extensive experience working with the modeling software. This research study presents the need for existence of such interaction technique, gaps from the related previous studies, statistical findings from the current study and possible reasons for the …
Improving A Mesh Segmentation Algorithm Based On Non-Negative Matrix Factorization, Jisun Kang
Improving A Mesh Segmentation Algorithm Based On Non-Negative Matrix Factorization, Jisun Kang
Open Access Theses
3D Mesh segmentation is used in various applications such as object recognition, reconstruction, and analyzing structure of meshes. The method for 3D mesh segmentation based on sparse non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) was previously proposed. It represents a novel, and conceptually simpler, method than other comparable algorithms. However, this method still has potential to improve performance, results could have better consistency and uniqueness with faster computation time than the prior proposed algorithm. This study introduced several approaches to enhance the performance of the algorithm comprehensively: applying dierent update rule and initialization of factor matrices, and imposing sparseness to the factor matrices …

Video Annotation By Crowd Workers With Privacy-Preserving Local Disclosure, Apeksha Dipak Kumavat
Open Access Theses
Advancements in computer vision are still not reliable enough for detecting video content including humans and their actions. Microtask crowdsourcing on task markets such as Amazon Mechnical Turk and Upwork can bring humans into the loop. However, engaging crowd workers to annotate non-public video footage risks revealing the identities of people in the video who may have a right to anonymity.
This thesis demonstrates how we can engage untrusted crowd workers to detect behaviors and objects, while robustly concealing the identities of all faces. We developed a web-based system that presents obfuscated videos to crowd workers, and provides them with …
