Sign Language Recognition In A Large Scale Sign Database, Pat Jangyodsuk May 2016

Sign Language Recognition In A Large Scale Sign Database, Pat Jangyodsuk

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Recognizing a sign in a sign language video is one of the well known challenging problems in computer vision community. The difficulty arises from many factors including inconsistent sign performing, noisy background, difference in image transformation between training and testing set such as scale, rotation and illumination. One of the most difficult problems, however, is capturing core information features. In most cases, hands are considered the dominant features since sign language usually involve hands movement and shapes. Having a large scale of a sign database also create another issue, expensive look-up time. As with majority of machine learning application, sign …

Comparison Of Machine Learning Algorithms In Suggesting Candidate Edges To Construct A Query On Heterogeneous Graphs, Rohit Ravi Kumar Bhoopalam May 2016

Comparison Of Machine Learning Algorithms In Suggesting Candidate Edges To Construct A Query On Heterogeneous Graphs, Rohit Ravi Kumar Bhoopalam

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Querying graph data can be difficult as it requires the user to have knowledge of the underlying schema and the query language. Visual query builders allow users to formulate the intended query by drawing nodes and edges of the query graph, which can be translated into a database query. Visual query builders help users formulate the query without requiring the user to have knowledge of the query language and the underlying schema. To the best of our knowledge, none of the currently available visual query builders suggest users what nodes/edges to include into their query graph. We provide suggestions to …

Engineering disciplines (such as biomedical, civil, computer science, electrical, mechanical) are instrumental to society’s wellbeing and technological competitiveness; however the interest of K-12 American students in these and other engineering fields is fading. To broaden the base of engineers for the future, it is critical to excite young minds about STEM. Research that is easily visible to K-12 students, including underserved and minority population with limited access to technology, is crucial in igniting their interests in STEM fields. More specifically, research topics that involve interactive elements such as Robots may be instrumental for K-12 education in and outside classroom. Robots …

Ogma - Language Acquisition System Using Immersive Virtual Reality, Sanika Gupta May 2016

Ogma - Language Acquisition System Using Immersive Virtual Reality, Sanika Gupta

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

One of the methods of learning a new language, or Second-Language Acquisition (SLA), is immersion, seen today as one of the most effective learning methods. Using this method, the learner relocates to a new place where the target language is the dominant language and tries to learn the language my immersing themselves in the local environment. However, it isn’t a feasible option for all, thus, traditional, less effective learning methods are used. As an alternative solution, we use virtual reality (VR) as a new method to learn a new language. VR is an immersive technology that allows the user to …

Processing Queries Over Partitioned Graph Databases: An Approach And It's Evaluation, Jay Dilipbhai D. Bodra

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Representation of structured data using graphs is meaningful for applications such as road and social networks. With the increase in the size of graph databases, querying them to retrieve desired information poses challenges in terms of query representation and scalability. Independently, querying and graph partitioning have been researched in the literature. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no effective scalable approach for querying graph databases using partitioning schemes. Also, it will be useful to analyze the quality of partitioning schemes from the query processing perspective. In this thesis, we propose a divide and conquer approach to process …

A New Real-Time Approach For Website Phishing Detection Based On Visual Similarity, Omid Asudeh May 2016

A New Real-Time Approach For Website Phishing Detection Based On Visual Similarity, Omid Asudeh

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Phishing attacks cause billions of dollars of loss every year worldwide. Among several solutions proposed for this type of attack, visual similarity detection methods have a good amount of accuracy. These methods exploit the fact that malicious pages mostly imitate some visual signals in the targeted websites. Visual similarity detection methods usually look for the imitations between the screen-shots of the web-pages and the image database of the most targeted websites. Despite their accuracy, the existing visual based approaches are not practical for the real-time purposes because of their image processing overhead. In this work, we use a pipeline framework …

Fault Localization Based On Combinatorial Testing, Laleh Shikh Gholamhosseinghandehari

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Combinatorial testing is a software testing strategy that has received a significant amount of attention from academia and industry. After executing a combinatorial test set, the execution status, i.e., pass or fail, of each test is obtained. If there is one or more failed tests, the next task is fault localization, i.e. localizing the fault in the source code. This dissertation addresses the problem of how to perform fault localization by leveraging the result of combinatorial testing. The major contribution of this dissertation is a fault localization approach called BEN that consists of two major phases: 1) failure-inducing combination identification, …

Demographics, in particular, gender, age, and race, are a key predictor of human behavior. Despite the significant effect that demographics plays, most scientific studies using online social media do not consider this factor, mainly due to the lack of such information. In this work, we use state-of-the-art face analysis software to infer gender, age, and race from profile images of 350K Twitter users from New York. For the period from November 1, 2014 to October 31, 2015, we study which hashtags are used by different demographic groups. Though we find considerable overlap for the most popular hashtags, there are also …

Acceleration Of Ddscat Computation By Parallelization On A Supercomputer, Manoj V. Seeram May 2016

Acceleration Of Ddscat Computation By Parallelization On A Supercomputer, Manoj V. Seeram

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The DDSCAT software is enabled for use of MPI or OpenMP to distribute calculation of different particle orientations amongst multiple processors on a high performance system. Run times for these simulations have been tested to take hours or days however and simulating varying orientations is not always necessary. If a simulation with only one particle orientation is submitted, DDSCAT could still potentially parallelize the simulation by wavelength calculations but it is unknown if this is the case. In this paper, we will be (i) quantifying the reduction in computation time that MPI provides relative to an equivalent MPI disabled simulation …

New Flexible Regression Models Generated By Gamma Random Variables With Censored Data, Elizabeth M. Hashimoto, Gauss M. Cordeiro, Edwin M. M. Ortega, Gholamhossein G. Hamedani

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

We propose and study a new log-gamma Weibull regression model. We obtain explicit expressions for the raw and incomplete moments, quantile and generating functions and mean deviations of the log-gamma Weibull distribution. We demonstrate that the new regression model can be applied to censored data since it represents a parametric family of models which includes as sub-models several widely-known regression models and therefore can be used more effectively in the analysis of survival data. We obtain the maximum likelihood estimates of the model parameters by considering censored data and evaluate local influence on the estimates of the parameters by taking …

Information Overload In Structured Data, Pinar Yanardag Delul May 2016

Information Overload In Structured Data, Pinar Yanardag Delul

Open Access Dissertations

Information overload refers to the difficulty of making decisions caused by too much information. In this dissertation, we address information overload problem in two separate structured domains, namely, graphs and text.

Graph kernels have been proposed as an efficient and theoretically sound approach to compute graph similarity. They decompose graphs into certain sub-structures, such as subtrees, or subgraphs. However, existing graph kernels suffer from a few drawbacks. First, the dimension of the feature space associated with the kernel often grows exponentially as the complexity of sub-structures increase. One immediate consequence of this behavior is that small, non-informative, sub-structures occur more …

Towards A Verified Complex Protocol Stack In A Production Kernel: Methodology And Demonstration, Peter C. Johnson May 2016

Towards A Verified Complex Protocol Stack In A Production Kernel: Methodology And Demonstration, Peter C. Johnson

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Any useful computer system performs communication and any communication must be parsed before it is computed upon. Given their importance, one might expect parsers to receive a significant share of attention from the security community. This is, however, not the case: bugs in parsers continue to account for a surprising portion of reported and exploited vulnerabilities. In this thesis, I propose a methodology for supporting the development of software that depends on parsers---such as anything connected to the Internet---to safely support any reasonably designed protocol: data structures to describe protocol messages; validation routines that check that data received from the …

A Game Theoretic Framework For Temporal And Agent Abstractions In Multiagent Learning, Danielle Clement May 2016

A Game Theoretic Framework For Temporal And Agent Abstractions In Multiagent Learning, Danielle Clement

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

A major challenge in the area of multiagent reinforcement learning is addressing the issue of scale as systems get more and more complex. Systems with multiple agents attempting to explore and learn about the world they inhabit concurrently require more time and resources to learn optimal responses. Increasing the number of agents within a system dramatically increases the cost to represent the problem and calculate the solution. Single agent systems address part of the scaling problem through the use of temporal abstractions, or mechanisms to consider a sequence of many actions as a single temporal “step”. This concept has been …

Towards Understanding The Compression Of Sound Information, Kathleen Marie Fisher May 2016

Towards Understanding The Compression Of Sound Information, Kathleen Marie Fisher

Computer Science Honors Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to explore data compression, specifically as it relates to sound information. Data transfer is an important part of the current technology driven lifestyle and compressed data means faster transmission.
