Which Point From An Interval Should We Choose?, Andrzej Pownuk, Vladik Kreinovich
Which Point From An Interval Should We Choose?, Andrzej Pownuk, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In many practical situations, we know the exact form of the objective function, and we know the optimal decision corresponding to each value of the corresponding parameter x. What should we do if we do not know the exact value of x, and instead, we only know x with uncertainty -- e.g., with interval uncertainty? In this case, a reasonable idea is to select one value from the given interval, and to use the optimal decision corresponding to the selected value. But which value should we choose? In this paper, we provide a solution to this problem for …

Towards The Most Robust Way Of Assigning Numerical Degrees To Ordered Labels, With Possible Applications To Dark Matter And Dark Energy, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Martha Osegueda Escobar, Kimberly Kato
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Experts often describe their estimates by using words from natural language, i.e., in effect, sorted labels. To efficiently represent the corresponding expert knowledge in a computer-based system, we need to translate these labels into a computer-understandable language, i.e., into numbers. There are many ways to translate labels into numbers. In this paper, we propose to select a translation which is the most robust, i.e., which preserves the order between the corresponding numbers under the largest possible deviations from the original translation. The resulting formulas are in good accordance with the translation coming from the Laplace's principle of sufficient reason, and …
What If We Use Different "And"-Operations In The Same Expert System, Mahdokhat Afravi, Vladik Kreinovich
What If We Use Different "And"-Operations In The Same Expert System, Mahdokhat Afravi, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In expert systems, we often face a problem of estimating the expert's degree of confidence in a composite statement A & B based on the known expert's degrees of confidence a = d(A) and b = d(B) in individual statements A and B. The corresponding estimate f&(a,b) is sometimes called an "and"-operation. Traditional fuzzy logic assumes that the same "and"-operation is applied to all pairs of statements. In this case, it is reasonable to justify that the "and"-operation be associative; such "and"-operations are known as t-norms. In practice, however, in different areas, different "and"-operations provide a good description …

Analysis Of The Execution Time Variation Of Openmp-Based Applications On The Intel Xeon Phi, Roberto Camacho Barranco, Patricia J. Teller
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
The Intel Xeon Phi accelerator is currently being used in several large-scale computer clusters and supercomputers to enhance the execution-time performance of computation-intensive applications. While performing a comprehensive profiling of the Intel Xeon Phi execution-time behavior of different applications included in the Rodinia Benchmark suite, we observed large variations in application execution times. In this report we present the average execution times for different runs of each application. In addition, we describe the different steps taken to try to solve this problem.
For example, a brief study was performed using one of these applications, i.e., a matrix-multiply kernel. By improving …

How To Transform Partial Order Between Degrees Into Numerical Values, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Joe Lorkowski, Martha Osegueda Escobar
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Fuzzy techniques are a successful way to handle expert knowledge, enabling us to capture different degrees of expert's certainty in their statements. To use fuzzy techniques, we need to describe expert's degree of certainty in numerical terms. Some experts can provide such numbers, but others can only describe their degrees by using natural-language words like "very", "somewhat", "to some extent", etc. In general, all we know about these word-valued degrees is that there is a natural partial order between these degrees: e.g., "very small" is clearly smaller than "somewhat small". In this paper, we propose a natural way to transform …
Accelerating Hash Grid And Screen-Space Photon Mapping In 3d Interactive Applications With Opencl, Nikolai Shkurkin
Accelerating Hash Grid And Screen-Space Photon Mapping In 3d Interactive Applications With Opencl, Nikolai Shkurkin
Computer Science and Software Engineering
Achieving interactive and realistic rendering is only possible with a combination of rendering algorithms, rendering pipelines, multi-core hardware, and parallelization APIs. This project explores and implements two photon mapping pipelines based on the work of Mara et. al [5] and Singh et. al [7] to achieve interactive rendering performance for a set of simple scenes using OpenCL and C++ to work with a GPU. In particular, both a 3D hash grid and a screen-space tiling algorithm are parallelized to accelerate photon lookup in order to compute direct and indirect lighting on visible surfaces in a scene. By using OpenCL with …

Raspberry Pi Radio Scanner Control Web Application, Jackson Marshall Strand
Computer Science and Software Engineering
In this senior project I design and develop software for the Raspberry Pi which allows the user to listen to and control a scanner radio anywhere in their home. The solution involves utilizing a Raspberry Pi 2 interfaced with the radio, a software package to communicate directly with the radio, and a web app hosting a web client providing the interface for user control. Audio streaming is achieved through the use of FFmpeg. Listening on the client is achieved by using an external software such as Video Lan (VLC) to open the audio stream. We provide an operable proof-of-concept with …

Estimability Tools For Package Developers, Russell V. Lenth
Estimability Tools For Package Developers, Russell V. Lenth
The R Journal
When a linear model is rank-deficient, then predictions based on that model become questionable because not all predictions are uniquely estimable. However, some of them are, and the estimability package provides tools that package developers can use to tell which is which. With the use of these tools, a model object’s predict method could return estimable predictions as-is while f lagging non-estimable ones in some way, so that the user can know which predictions to believe. The estimability package also provides, as a demonstration, an estimability-enhanced epredict method to use in place of predict for models fitted using the stats …

Consumers are increasingly relying on public wireless hotspots to access the internet from a growing number of devices. Usage of these hotspots has expanded from just laptops to everything from iPhones to tablets, which are expected to be internet-connected for full functionality. It has become common for one to check if there’s an open wireless hotspot connection available at places like coffee shops, hotels, restaurants, or even a doctor’s waiting room. The issue that arises is that these public connections present an inherent security risk, as anyone can connect and gain access to the network. For increased security, the use …

This project aims to gather advanced data sets from MEMS sensors and GPS and deliver it to the user, who can capitalize on the data. The once negligible half-degree difference of your board barreling down a wave can be recorded from a gyro and exploited for the perfect turn. The exact speed dreaded by longboarders where speed wobbles turn into a road rash can be analysed and consequently avoided. Ascertaining the summit of your flight using combined GPS sensors from the ski ramp allows for the correct timing of tricks. When it comes to pursuing excellence in professional sports, amateur …

Varieties of wearable devices such as smart watches, Virtual/Augmented Reality devices (AR/VR) are much more affordable with interesting capabilities. In our vision, a person may use more than one devices at a time, and they form an eco-system of wearable devices. Therefore, we aim to build a system where an application expands its input and output among different devices, and adapts its input/output stream for different contexts.

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This work presents Sonicnect, an acoustic sensing system with smartphone that enables accurate hands-free gesture input. Sonicnect leverages the embedded microphone in the smartphone to capture the subtle audio signals generated with fingers touching on the table. It supports 9 commonly used gestures (click, flip, scroll and zoom, etc) with above 92% recognition accuracy, and the minimum gesture movement could be 2cm. Distinguishable features are then extracted by exploiting spatio-temporal and frequency properties of the subtle audio signals. We conduct extensive real environment experiments to evaluate its performance. The results validate the effectiveness and robustness of Sonicnect.

Demo: Wearable Application To Manage Problem Behavior In Children With Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Camellia Zakaria, Richard C. Davis
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Managing problem behaviors in children with neurodevelopmental disorders can be challenging. Such behaviors may discourage social participation and learning. Many of these behaviors warrant intervention, however, are challenging for caregivers to constantly supervise. Previous work focused on developing recognition systems for stereotypical and aggressive behaviors. Researchers also developed visualization interface for caregivers to better understand their child’s needs. Our goal however, is to design an independent behavior management application to help children manage problem behaviors with minimal supervision. We conducted a field study at a school for children with special needs in Singapore, and interviewed ten teachers. This study helped us …

Experimental and theoretical triple differential cross sections for intermediate-energy (250 eV) electron-impact single ionization of the CO2 are presented for three fixed projectile scattering angles. Results are presented for ionization of the outermost 1πg molecular orbital of CO2 in a coplanar asymmetric geometry. The experimental data are compared to predictions from the three-center Coulomb continuum approximation for triatomic targets, and the molecular three-body distorted wave (M3DW) model. It is observed that while both theories are in reasonable qualitative agreement with experiment, the M3DW is in the best overall agreement with experiment.

A New Set Of Potential Energy Surfaces For Hco: Influence Of Renner-Teller Coupling On The Bound And Resonance Vibrational States, Steve Alexandre Ndengué, Richard Dawes, Hua Guo
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
It is commonly understood that the Renner-Teller effect can strongly influence the spectroscopy of molecules through coupling of electronic states. Here we investigate the vibrational bound states and low-lying resonances of the formyl radical treating the Renner-Teller coupled X2A' and Ã2A" states using the MultiConfiguration Time Dependent Hartree (MCTDH) method. The calculations were performed using the improved relaxation method for the bound states and a recently published extension to compute resonances. A new set of accurate global potential energy surfaces were computed at the explicitly correlated multireference configuration interaction (MRCI-F12) level and yielded remarkably close agreement with experiment in this …

We report an experimental and theoretical study of low-energy electron-impact ionization of tetrahydrofuran, which is a molecule of biological interest. The experiments were performed using an advanced reaction microscope specially built for electron-impact ionization studies. The theoretical calculations were performed within the molecular three-body distorted-wave model. Reasonably good agreement is found between experiment and theory.

In reply to the Comment of Jorge et al. [Phys. Rev. A 93, 066701 (2016)], we agree and reconfirm that the alternative classical trajectory Monte Carlo method (called hydrogenic-Z-CTMC) radial distributions for H*(n = 2) we recently published are not stable in time. However, we show that such lack of stability which is more noticeable for H(2s) than for H(2p) is due to the initialization procedure employed and not to the hydrogenic-Z-CTMC method itself. A new set of completely stable hydrogenic-Z-CTMC calculations for H*(n = 2) is introduced and found in very good agreement with standard microcanonical results reinforcing our …

The Tian Shan is a tectonically complex intracontinental orogenic belt situated between the Tarim Basin and the Kazakh Shield. The vast majority of the previous shear wave splitting (SWS) measurements were presented as station averages, which are only valid when the anisotropy structure can be approximated by a single layer of anisotropy with a horizontal axis of symmetry, i.e., a model of simple anisotropy. A variety of anisotropy-forming hypotheses have been proposed based on the station-averaged measurements. In this study, we measure the splitting parameters at 25 stations that recorded high-quality data from a wide back azimuthal range for the …

Concatenative Synthesis For Novel Timbral Creation, James Eric Bilous
Master's Theses
Modern day musicians rely on a variety of instruments for musical expression. Tones produced from electronic instruments have become almost as commonplace as those produced by traditional ones as evidenced by the plethora of artists who can be found composing and performing with nothing more than a personal computer. This desire to embrace technical innovation as a means to augment performance art has created a budding field in computer science that explores the creation and manipulation of sound for artistic purposes. One facet of this new frontier concerns timbral creation, or the development of new sounds with unique characteristics that …

Automating Self Evaluations For Software Engineers, Jonathan Rodrigo A. Miranda
Master's Theses
Software engineers frequently compose self-evaluations as part of employee perfor- mance reviews. These evaluations can be a key artifact for assessing a software engineer’s contributions to a team and organization, and for generating useful feed- back. Self-evaluations can be challenging because a) they can be time consuming, b) individuals may forget about important contributions especially when the review period is long such as a full year, c) some individuals can consciously or unconsciously overstate their contributions, and d) some individuals can be reluctant to describe their contributions for fear of appearing too proud [24].

A Language-Based Model For Specifying And Staging Mixed-Initiative Dialogs, Saverio Perugini, Joshua W. Buck
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Specifying and implementing flexible human-computer dialogs, such as those used in kiosks, is complex because of the numerous and varied directions in which each user might steer a dialog. The objective of this research is to improve dialog specification and implementation. To do so we developed a model for specifying and staging mixed-initiative dialogs. The model involves a dialog authoring notation, based on concepts from programming languages, for specifying a variety of unsolicited reporting, mixed-initiative dialogs in a concise representation that serves as a design for dialog implementation. Guided by this foundation, we built a dialog staging engine which operationalizes …
