A Completely Covert Audio Channel In Android, Sukanya Thakur
Master's Projects
Exfilteration of private data is a potential security threat against mobile devices. Previous research concerning such threats has generally focused on techniques that are only valid over short distances (NFC, Bluetooth, electromagnetic emanations, and so on). In this research, we develop and analyze an exfilteration attack that has no distance limitation. Specifically, we take advantage of vulnerabilities in Android that enable us to covertly record and exfilterate a voice call. This paper presents a successful implementation of our attack, which records a call (both uplink and downlink voice streams), and inaudibly transmits the recorded voice over a subsequent inaudible call, …

Department of Information Systems & Computer Science Faculty Publications
In this study, a bot is developed to compete in the first International RoShamBo Tournament test suite. The basic “Beat Frequent Pick (BFP)” algorithm was taken from the supplied test suite and was improved by adding a random choice tailored fit against the opponent's distribution of picks. A training program was also developed that finds the best performing bot variant by changing the bot's behavior in terms of the timing of the recomputation of the pick distribution. Simulation results demonstrate the significantly improved performance of the proposed variant over the original BFP. This indicates the potential of using the core …

Functional Requirements Identification Using Item-To-Item Collaborative Filtering, Proceso L. Fernandez Jr, Reynald Jay F. Hidalgo
Department of Information Systems & Computer Science Faculty Publications
One of the most difficult tasks in the development of software is the identification of the functional requirements. A well-defined functional requirement will eventually map the success of a software project. A support tool that can recommend candidate functional requirements for a software project being developed will help software engineers to deliver the right software to the clients.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether a collection of previously developed software applications can serve as basis for the development of a model to identify functional requirements of a project to be developed. Completed software project documentations of Master …

Innovations In Financial Is And Technology Ecosystems: High-Frequency Trading Systems In The Equity Market, Robert J. Kauffman, Jun Liu, Dan Ma
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Technology-based financial innovations over the past four decades have led to transformations in the financial markets. Understanding technological innovations in financial information systems (IS) and technologies has been challenging for technology consultants and financial industry practitioners due to the underlying complexities though. In this article, we propose an ecosystem analysis approach by extending the technology ecosystem paths of influence model (Adomavicius et al., 2008a) to incorporate stakeholder actions, considering both supply-side and demand-side forces for technological change. Our ecosystem model brings together three original core elements: technology components, technology-based services, and technology-supported business infrastructures. We also contribute a fourth new …

Designing A Programming Contract Library For Java, Neha Rajkumar
Designing A Programming Contract Library For Java, Neha Rajkumar
Master's Projects
Programmers are now developing large and complex software systems, so it’s important to have software that is consistent, efficient, and robust. Programming contracts allow developers to specify preconditions, postconditions, and invariants in order to more easily identify programming errors. The design by contract principle [1] was first used in the Eiffel programming language [2], and has since been extended to libraries in many other languages. The purpose of my project is to design a programming contract library for Java. The library supports a set of preconditions, postconditions, and invariants that are specified in Java annotations. It incorporates contract checking for …
Metamorphic Java Engine, Sailee Choudhary
Metamorphic Java Engine, Sailee Choudhary
Master's Projects
Malware is a software program outlined to damage or perform other unwanted actions to a computer system. Metamorphic malware is a category of malignant software programs that has the ability to change its code as it propagates. A hidden Markov model (HMM) is a statistical model where the system is assumed to be a Markov process with unseen states. An HMM is based on the use of statistics to detect patterns, and hence in metamorphic virus detection. Previous work has been done in order to create morphing engines using LLVM-bytecode format. This project includes the creation of a morphing engine …
Collaboration Prototyper: Automatic Generation Of Prototypes From Uml Collaborations, Ramya Badthody Shenoy
Collaboration Prototyper: Automatic Generation Of Prototypes From Uml Collaborations, Ramya Badthody Shenoy
Master's Projects
The thesis begins with a discussion of the use of designing versus prototyping in the initial stages of software development lifecycle. We present the idea of generating a working prototype directly from a UML analysis model to overcome time spent on creating a prototype. UML diagrams can be made to give sufficient information to generate code. Collaborations form the backbone of analysis models. A collaboration can be defined as a UML class diagram together with one or more sequence diagrams. Collaborations are the input of the Collaboration Prototyper (CP). CP transforms a collaboration into a Java prototype.
Improving The Accuracy And Robustness Of Self-Tuning Histograms By Subspace Clustering, Sai Kiran Padooru
Improving The Accuracy And Robustness Of Self-Tuning Histograms By Subspace Clustering, Sai Kiran Padooru
Master's Projects
Self-tuning histograms are a type of histograms very popular these days, as they allow the usage of multidimensional datasets. The main advantage of them is that they have a low computational cost due to their capacity to understand the dataset. Also, they proposed a better approach as they stay up-to-date and have adaptability to query patterns. According to the above, many researchers have worked on improving the accuracy of these type of histograms, which has led to the use of subspace clustering methods as initialization values. Following this approach in this study, a self-tuning histogram code was developed with the …
Ssct Score For Malware Detection, Srividhya Srinivasan
Ssct Score For Malware Detection, Srividhya Srinivasan
Master's Projects
Metamorphic malware transforms its internal structure when it propagates, making detection of such malware a challenging research problem. Previous research considered a score based on simple substitution cryptanalysis, which was applied to the metamorphic detection problem. In this research, we analyze a new score based on a combined simple substitution and column transposition (SSCT) cryptanalysis. We show that this SSCT score significantly outperforms the simple substitution score— and other malware detection scores—in many cases.
Function Call Graph Score For Malware Detection, Deebiga Rajeswaran
Function Call Graph Score For Malware Detection, Deebiga Rajeswaran
Master's Projects
Metamorphic malware changes its internal structure with each infection, while maintaining its core functionality. Detecting such malware is a challenging research problem. Function call graph analysis has previously shown promise in detecting such malware. In this research, we analyze the robustness of a function call graph score with respect to various code morphing strategies. We also consider modifications of the score that make it more robust in the face of such morphing.

Measuring Malware Evolution, Poonkodi Ponnambalam
Master's Projects
In this research, we simulate the effect of code evolution by applying a variety of code morphing strategies. Specifically, we consider code substitution, transposition, insertion, and deletion. We then analyze the effect of these code morphing strategies relative to a variety of malware scores that have been considered in previous research. Our goal is to gain a better understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of these various malware scoring techniques. This research should prove useful in designing more robust scores for detecting malware.
Graph Basesd Word Sense Disambiguation For Clinical Abbreviations Using Apache Spark, Veebha Padavkar
Graph Basesd Word Sense Disambiguation For Clinical Abbreviations Using Apache Spark, Veebha Padavkar
Master's Projects
Identification of the correct sense for an ambiguous word is one of the major challenges for language processing in all domains. Word Sense Disambiguation is the task of identifying the correct sense of an ambiguous word by referencing the surrounding context of the word. Similar to the narrative documents, clinical documents suffer from ambiguity issues that impact automatic extraction of correct sense from the document. In this project, we propose a graph-based solution based on an algorithm originally implemented by Osmar R. Zaine et al. for word sense disambiguation specifically focusing on clinical text. The algorithm makes use of proposed …
Load Balancing For Big Data Entity Matching Using Block Split, Akhilesh Kondra
Load Balancing For Big Data Entity Matching Using Block Split, Akhilesh Kondra
Master's Projects
Entity Matching (EM) is a complex problem and has great impact on data quality. In EM we usually match all the combination of entity pairs using different similarity measures and judge if there is any match between entities. Mapreduce based parallel programing model can be used to match these entities. Even distribution of data into the map and reduce tasks will play vital role in the productivity of Mapreduce based programing model. If the dataset is large and has skewed data, then the distribution should be done effectively to achieve load balancing. In this paper, I have implemented an approach …
Mutations Of Adjacent Amino Acid Pairs Are Not Always Independent, Jyotsna Ramanan, Peter Revesz
Mutations Of Adjacent Amino Acid Pairs Are Not Always Independent, Jyotsna Ramanan, Peter Revesz
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
Evolutionary studies usually assume that the genetic mutations are independent of each other. This paper tests the independence hypothesis for genetic mutations with regard to protein coding regions. According to the new experimental results the independence assumption generally holds, but there are certain exceptions. In particular, the coding regions that represent two adjacent amino acids seem to change in ways that sometimes deviate significantly from the expected theoretical probability under the independence assumption.

Java 8 is one of the largest upgrades to the popular language and framework in over a decade. However, the Eclipse IDE is missing several key refactorings that could help developers take advantage of new features in Java 8 more easily. In this paper, we discuss our ongoing work in porting the enhanced for loop to lambda expression refactoring from the NetBeans IDE to Eclipse. We also discuss future plans for new Java 8 refactorings not found in any current IDE.
Stackless Multi-Threading For Embedded Systems, William P. Mccartney, Nigamanth Sridhar
Stackless Multi-Threading For Embedded Systems, William P. Mccartney, Nigamanth Sridhar
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Programming support for multi-threaded applications on embedded microcontroller platforms has attracted a considerable amount of research attention in the recent years. This paper is focused on this problem, and presents UnStacked C, a source-to-source transformation that can translate multithreaded programs written in C into stackless continuations. The transformation can support legacy code by not requiring any changes to application code; only the underlying threading library needs modifications. We describe the details of UnStacked C in the context of the TinyOS operating system for wireless sensor network applications. We present a modified implementation of the TOSThreads library for TinyOS, and show …
Towards Automatic Generation Of Security-Centric Descriptions For Android Apps, Mu Zhang, Yue Duan, Qian Feng, Heng Yin
Towards Automatic Generation Of Security-Centric Descriptions For Android Apps, Mu Zhang, Yue Duan, Qian Feng, Heng Yin
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
To improve the security awareness of end users, Android markets directly present two classes of literal app information: 1) permission requests and 2) textual descriptions. Unfortunately, neither can serve the needs. A permission list is not only hard to understand but also inadequate; textual descriptions provided by developers are not security-centric and are significantly deviated from the permissions. To fill in this gap, we propose a novel technique to automatically generate security-centric app descriptions, based on program analysis. We implement a prototype system, DESCRIBEME, and evaluate our system using both DroidBench and real-world Android apps. Experimental results demonstrate that DESCRIBEME …
Contract-Based General-Purpose Gpu Programming, Alexey Kolesnichenko, Christopher M. Poskitt, Sebastian Nanz, Bertrand Meyer
Contract-Based General-Purpose Gpu Programming, Alexey Kolesnichenko, Christopher M. Poskitt, Sebastian Nanz, Bertrand Meyer
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Using GPUs as general-purpose processors has revolutionized parallel computing by offering, for a large and growing set of algorithms, massive data-parallelization on desktop machines. An obstacle to widespread adoption, however, is the difficulty of programming them and the low-level control of the hardware required to achieve good performance. This paper suggests a programming library, SafeGPU, that aims at striking a balance between programmer productivity and performance, by making GPU data-parallel operations accessible from within a classical object-oriented programming language. The solution is integrated with the design-by-contract approach, which increases confidence in functional program correctness by embedding executable program specifications into …
Two Formulas For Success In Social Media: Learning And Network Effects, Liangfei Qiu, Qian Tang, Andrew B. Whinston
Two Formulas For Success In Social Media: Learning And Network Effects, Liangfei Qiu, Qian Tang, Andrew B. Whinston
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recent years have witnessed an unprecedented explosion in information technology that enables dynamic diffusion of user-generated content in social networks. Online videos, in particular, have changed the landscape of marketing and entertainment, competing with premium content and spurring business innovations. In the present study, we examine how learning and network effects drive the diffusion of online videos. While learning happens through informational externalities, network effects are direct payoff externalities. Using a unique data set from YouTube, we empirically identify learning and network effects separately, and find that both mechanisms have statistically and economically significant effects on video views; furthermore, the …
Mood Self-Assessment On Smartphones, Le Minh Khue, Eng Lieh Ouh, Stan Jarzabek
Mood Self-Assessment On Smartphones, Le Minh Khue, Eng Lieh Ouh, Stan Jarzabek
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Mood has been systematically studied by psychologists for over 100 years. As mood is a subjective feeling, any study of mood must take into account and accurately capture user’s perception of an experienced feeling. In last 40 years, a number of pen-andpaper mood self-assessment scales have been proposed. Typically, a person is asked to separately rate various dimensions of the experienced feeling (e.g., pleasure and arousal) or mood items (interested, agitated, excited, etc.) on numeric scales (e.g., between 0 and 10). These partial ratings are then combined into an overall mood rating (or into its positive and negative affect). Penand-paper …

Learning Relative Similarity From Data Streams: Active Online Learning Approaches, Shuji Hao, Peilin Zhao, Steven C. H. Hoi, Chunyan Miao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Relative similarity learning, as an important learning scheme for information retrieval, aims to learn a bi-linear similarity function from a collection of labeled instance-pairs, and the learned function would assign a high similarity value for a similar instance-pair and a low value for a dissimilar pair. Existing algorithms usually assume the labels of all the pairs in data streams are always made available for learning. However, this is not always realistic in practice since the number of possible pairs is quadratic to the number of instances in the database, and manually labeling the pairs could be very costly and time …

Singapore faces a major challenge in providing care and support for senior citizens due to its rapidlyageing population and declining old-age support ratio. The concept of Ageing-in-Place was introduced by the Singapore government [1] to allow older people to live independently in their own homes and communities so that the need for institutionalised care will only be utilised when necessary. We have three fundamental questions that this project will answer: 1. How to make community care serviceseffective through innovations in care delivery? How to lower the cost of service delivery and improve 2. productivity of caregivers, by leveraging information and …
