Spiral Unfoldings Of Convex Polyhedra, Joseph O'Rourke
Spiral Unfoldings Of Convex Polyhedra, Joseph O'Rourke
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
The notion of a spiral unfolding of a convex polyhedron, resulting by flattening a special type of Hamiltonian cut-path, is explored. The Platonic and Archimedian solids all have nonoverlapping spiral unfoldings, although among generic polyhedra, overlap is more the rule than the exception. The structure of spiral unfoldings is investigated, primarily by analyzing one particular class, the polyhedra of revolution.

Evaporite Geo-Hazard In The Sauris Area (Friuli Venezia Giulia Region - Ne Italy), Chiara Calligaris, Stefano Devoto, Luca Zini, Franco Cucchi
Sinkhole Conference 2015
Evaporite sinkholes represent a severe threat to many European countries, including Italy. Among the Italian regions, of the area most affected is the northern sector of Friuli Venezia Giulia Region (NE Italy). Here chalks had two main depositional periods first in the Late Permian and then during the Late Carnian (Late Triassic). Evaporites outcrop mainly in the Alpine valleys or are partially mantled by Quaternary deposits, as occur along the Tagliamento River Valley. Furthermore, evaporites make up some portions of mountains and Alpine slopes, generating hundreds of karst depressions. This paper presents the preliminary results of the research activities carried …
Chemometric And Bioinformatic Analyses Of Cellular Biochemistry, Bradley Worley
Chemometric And Bioinformatic Analyses Of Cellular Biochemistry, Bradley Worley
Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The amount of information collected and analyzed in biochemical and bioanalytical research has exploded over the last few decades, due in large part to the increasing availability of analytical instrumentation that yields information-rich spectra. Datasets from Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Mass Spectrometry (MS), infrared (IR) or Raman spectroscopy may easily carry tens to hundreds of thousands of potentially correlated variables observed from only a few samples, making the application of classical statistical methods inappropriate, if not impossible. Drawing useful biochemical conclusions from these unique sources of data requires the use of specialized multivariate data handling techniques.
Unfortunately, proper implementation of …

Whatsapp Network Forensics: Decrypting And Understanding The Whatsapp Call Signaling Messages, Filip Karpisek, Ibrahim Baggili, Frank Breitinger
Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
WhatsApp is a widely adopted mobile messaging application with over 800 million users. Recently, a calling feature was added to the application and no comprehensive digital forensic analysis has been performed with regards to this feature at the time of writing this paper. In this work, we describe how we were able to decrypt the network traffic and obtain forensic artifacts that relate to this new calling feature which included the: a) WhatsApp phone numbers, b) WhatsApp server IPs, c) WhatsApp audio codec (Opus), d) WhatsApp call duration, and e) WhatsApp's call termination. We explain the methods and tools used …
Prediction: The Quintessential Model Validation Test, Wayne Wakeland
Prediction: The Quintessential Model Validation Test, Wayne Wakeland
Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series
It is essential to objectively test how well policy models predict real world behavior. The method used to support this assertion involves the review of three SD policy models emphasizing the degree to which the model was able to fit the historical outcome data and how well model-predicted outcomes matched real world outcomes as they unfolded. Findings indicate that while historical model agreement is a favorable indication of model validity, the act of making predictions without knowing the actual data, and comparing these predictions to actual data, can reveal model weaknesses that might be overlooked when all of the available …

Volunteers are increasingly being recruited into citizen science projects to collect observations for scientific studies. An additional goal of these projects is to engage and educate these volunteers. Thus, there are few barriers to participation resulting in volunteer observers with varying ability to complete the project’s tasks. To improve the quality of a citizen science project’s outcomes it would be useful to account for inter-observer variation, and to assess the rarely tested presumption that participating in a citizen science projects results in volunteers becoming better observers. Here we present a method for indexing observer variability based on the data routinely …
Analyzing And Organizing The Sonic Space Of Vocal Imitation, Davide Andrea Mauro Phd, D. Rocchesso
Analyzing And Organizing The Sonic Space Of Vocal Imitation, Davide Andrea Mauro Phd, D. Rocchesso
Computer Sciences and Electrical Engineering Faculty Research
The sonic space that can be spanned with the voice is vast and complex and, therefore, it is difficult to organize and explore. In order to devise tools that facilitate sound design by vocal sketching we attempt at organizing a database of short excerpts of vocal imitations. By clustering the sound samples on a space whose dimensionality has been reduced to the two principal components, it is experimentally checked how meaningful the resulting clusters are for humans. Eventually, a representative of each cluster, chosen to be close to its centroid, may serve as a landmark in the exploration of the …

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications
A growing number of students are completing undergraduate degrees in statistics and entering the workforce as data analysts. In these positions, they are expected to understand how to use databases and other data warehouses, scrape data from Internet sources, program solutions to complex problems in multiple languages, and think algorithmically as well as statistically. These data science topics have not traditionally been a major component of undergraduate programs in statistics. Consequently, a curricular shift is needed to address additional learning outcomes. The goal of this article is to motivate the importance of data science proficiency and to provide examples and …
How To Explain The Empirical Success Of Generalized Trigonometric Functions In Processing Discontinuous Signals, Pedro Barragan Olague, Vladik Kreinovich
How To Explain The Empirical Success Of Generalized Trigonometric Functions In Processing Discontinuous Signals, Pedro Barragan Olague, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Trigonometric functions form the basis of Fourier analysis - one of the main signal processing tools. However, while they are very efficient in describing smooth signals, they do not work well for signals that contain discontinuities - such as signals describing phase transitions, earthquakes, etc. It turns out that empirically, one of the most efficient ways of describing and processing such signals is to use a certain generalization of trigonometric functions. In this paper, we provide a theoretical explanation of why this particular generalization is the most empirically efficient one.

For many banks and customers in the Middle East and Islamic world, the availability and the ability to apply Islamic Shariah rules on financial activities is very important. In some cases, business and technical barriers can limit the ability to apply and offer financial services that are implemented according to Shariah rules.
In this paper, we discuss enforcing Shariah rules from information technology viewpoint and show how such rules can be implemented and enforced in a financial establishment. Security authorization standard XACML is extended to consider Shariah rules. In this research XACML architecture, that is used and applied in many …

Clinical documents are vital resources for radiologists to have a better understanding of patient history. The use of clinical documents can complement the often brief reasons for exams that are provided by physicians in order to perform more informed diagnoses. With the large number of study exams that radiologists have to perform on a daily basis, it becomes too time-consuming for radiologists to sift through each patient's clinical documents. It is therefore important to provide a capability that can present contextually relevant clinical documents, and at the same time satisfy the diverse information needs among radiologists from different specialties. In …

Emotional Facial Expressions In Synthesised Sign Language Avatars: A Manual Evaluation., Robert G Smith, Brian Nolan
Emotional Facial Expressions In Synthesised Sign Language Avatars: A Manual Evaluation., Robert G Smith, Brian Nolan
Other Resources
This research explores and evaluates the contribution that facial expressions might have regarding improved comprehension and acceptability in sign language avatars. Focusing specifically on Irish sign language (ISL), the Deaf (the uppercase ‘‘D’’ in the word ‘‘Deaf’’ indicates Deaf as a culture as opposed to ‘‘deaf’’ as a medical condition) community’s responsiveness to sign language avatars is examined. The hypothesis of this is as follows: augmenting an existing avatar with the seven widely accepted universal emotions identified by Ekman (Basic emotions: handbook of cognition and emotion. Wiley, London, 2005) to achieve underlying facial expressions will make that avatar more human-like …

Towards Making Theory Of Computation Course More Understandable And Relevant: Recursive Functions, For-Loops, And While-Loops, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In this paper, we show how we can make a theory of computation course more understandable and more relevant: namely, we show that a seemingly abstract notion of primitive recursion is a direct counterpart to for-loops, while the mu-recursion is an analog of while-loops.
Distributed Approach For Peptide Identification, Naga V K Abhinav Vedanbhatla
Distributed Approach For Peptide Identification, Naga V K Abhinav Vedanbhatla
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
A crucial step in protein identification is peptide identification. The Peptide Spectrum Match (PSM) information set is enormous. Hence, it is a time-consuming procedure to work on a single machine. PSMs are situated by a cross connection, a factual score, or a probability that the match between the trial and speculative is right and original. This procedure takes quite a while to execute. So, there is demand for enhancement of the performance to handle extensive peptide information sets. Development of appropriate distributed frameworks are expected to lessen the processing time.
The designed framework uses a peptide handling algorithm named C-Ranker, …
A Computational Translation Of The Phaistos Disk, Peter Revesz
A Computational Translation Of The Phaistos Disk, Peter Revesz
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
For over a century the text of the Phaistos Disk remained an enigma without a convincing translation. This paper presents a novel semi-automatic translation method that uses for the first time a recently discovered connection between the Phaistos Disk symbols and other ancient scripts, including the Old Hungarian alphabet. The connection between the Phaistos Disk script and the Old Hungarian alphabet suggested the possibility that the Phaistos Disk language may be related to Proto-Finno-Ugric, Proto-Ugric, or Proto-Hungarian. Using words and suffixes from those languages, it is possible to translate the Phaistos Disk text as an ancient sun hymn, possibly connected …
A Computational Model Of The Spread Of Ancient Human Populations Based On Mitochondrial Dna Samples, Peter Revesz
A Computational Model Of The Spread Of Ancient Human Populations Based On Mitochondrial Dna Samples, Peter Revesz
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
The extraction of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from ancient human population samples provides important data for the reconstruction of population influences, spread and evolution from the Neolithic to the present. This paper presents a mtDNA-based similarity measure between pairs of human populations and a computational model for the evolution of human populations. In a computational experiment, the paper studies the mtDNA information from five Neolithic and Bronze Age populations, namely the Andronovo, the Bell Beaker, the Minoan, the Rössen and the Únětice populations. In the past these populations were identified as separate cultural groups based on geographic location, age and the …

A Computational Study Of The Evolution Of Cretan And Related Scripts, Peter Revesz
A Computational Study Of The Evolution Of Cretan And Related Scripts, Peter Revesz
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
Crete was the birthplace of several ancient writings, including the Cretan Hieroglyphs, the Linear A and the Linear B scripts. Out of these three only Linear B is deciphered. The sound values of the Cretan Hieroglyph and the Linear A symbols are unknown and attempts to reconstruct them based on Linear B have not been fruitful. In this paper, we compare the ancient Cretan scripts with four other Mediterranean and Black Sea scripts, namely Phoenician, South Arabic, Greek and Old Hungarian. We provide a computational study of the evolution of the three Cretan and four other scripts. This study encompasses …
