Framing The Question, "Who Governs The Internet?", Robert J. Domanski Jan 2015

Framing The Question, "Who Governs The Internet?", Robert J. Domanski

Publications and Research

There remains a widespread perception among both the public and elements of academia that the Internet is “ungovernable”. However, this idea, as well as the notion that the Internet has become some type of cyber-libertarian utopia, is wholly inaccurate. Governments may certainly encounter tremendous difficulty in attempting to regulate the Internet, but numerous types of authority have nevertheless become pervasive. So who, then, governs the Internet? This book will contend that the Internet is, in fact, being governed, that it is being governed by specific and identifiable networks of policy actors, and that an argument can be made as to …

A Systematic Study On Explicit-State Non-Zenoness Checking For Timed Automata, Ting Wang, Jun Sun, Xinyu Wang, Yang Liu, Yuanjie Si, Jin Song Dong, Xiaohu Yang, Xiaohong Li Jan 2015

A Systematic Study On Explicit-State Non-Zenoness Checking For Timed Automata, Ting Wang, Jun Sun, Xinyu Wang, Yang Liu, Yuanjie Si, Jin Song Dong, Xiaohu Yang, Xiaohong Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Zeno runs, where infinitely many actions occur within finite time, may arise in Timed Automata models. Zeno runs are not feasible in reality and must be pruned during system verification. Thus it is necessary to check whether a run is Zeno or not so as to avoid presenting Zeno runs as counterexamples during model checking. Existing approaches on non-Zenoness checking include either introducing an additional clock in the Timed Automata models or additional accepting states in the zone graphs. In addition, there are approaches proposed for alternative timed modeling languages, which could be generalized to Timed Automata. In this work, …

Synthesis With Hypergraphs, Christopher Thomas Alvin Jan 2015

Synthesis With Hypergraphs, Christopher Thomas Alvin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Many problems related to synthesis with intelligent tutoring may be phrased as program synthesis problems using AI-style search and formal reasoning techniques. The _x000C_first two results in this dissertation focus on problem synthesis as an aspect of intelligent tutoring systems applied to STEM-based education frameworks, specifically high school geometry. Given a geometric _x000C_figure as input, our technique constructs a hypergraph representing logical deduction of facts, and then traverses the hypergraph to synthesize problems and their corresponding solutions. Using similar techniques, our third result is focused on exhaustive synthesis of molecules. This synthesis process involves bonding sets of basic, molecular `fragments' …

Seavipers - Computer Vision And Inertial Position Reference Sensor System (Cviprss), Justin Lee Erdman Jan 2015

Seavipers - Computer Vision And Inertial Position Reference Sensor System (Cviprss), Justin Lee Erdman

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This work describes the design and development of an optical, Computer Vision (CV) based sensor for use as a Position Reference System (PRS) in Dynamic Positioning (DP). Using a combination of robotics and CV techniques, the sensor provides range and heading information to a selected reference object. The proposed optical system is superior to existing ones because it does not depend upon special reflectors nor does it require a lengthy set-up time. This system, the Computer Vision and Inertial Position Reference Sensor System (CVIPRSS, pronounced \nickname), combines a laser rangefinder, infrared camera, and a pan--tilt unit with the robust TLD …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Neurons are believed to be the brain computational engines of the brain. A recent discovery in neurophysiology reveals that interneurons can slowly integrate spiking, share the output across a coupled network of axons and respond with persistent firing even in the absence of input to the soma or dendrites, which has not been understood and could be very important for exploring the mechanism of human cognition. The conventional models are incapable of simulating the important newly-discovered phenomenon of persistent firing induced by axonal slow integration. In this paper, we propose a computationally efficient model of neurons through modeling the axon …

Stability Of Transportation Networks Under Adaptive Routing Policies, Sebastien Boyer, Sebastien Blandin, Laura Wynter Jan 2015

Stability Of Transportation Networks Under Adaptive Routing Policies, Sebastien Boyer, Sebastien Blandin, Laura Wynter

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Growing concerns regarding urban congestion, and the recent explosion of mobile devices able to provide real-time information to traffic users have motivated increasing reliance on real-time route guidance for the online management of traffic networks. However, while the theory of traffic equilibria is very well-known, much fewer results exist on the stability of such equilibria, especially in the context of adaptive routing policy. In this work, we consider the problem of characterizing the stability properties of traffic equilibria in the context of online adaptive route choice induced by GPS-based decision making. We first extend the recent framework of “Markovian Traffic …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Robots are increasingly becoming key players in human-robot teams. To become effective teammates, robots must possess profound understanding of an environment, be able to reason about the desired commands and goals within a specific context, and be able to communicate with human teammates in a clear and natural way. To address these challenges, we have developed an intelligence architecture that combines cognitive components to carry out high-level cognitive tasks, semantic perception to label regions in the world, and a natural language component to reason about the command and its relationship to the objects in the world. This paper describes recent …

A Trust-Based Relay Selection Approach To The Multi-Hop Network Formation Problem In Cognitive Radio Networks, Brandy Michelle Tyson Jan 2015

A Trust-Based Relay Selection Approach To The Multi-Hop Network Formation Problem In Cognitive Radio Networks, Brandy Michelle Tyson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

One of the major challenges for today’s wireless communications is to meet the growing demand for supporting an increasing diversity of wireless applications with limited spectrum resource. In cooperative communications and networking, users share resources and collaborate in a distributed approach, similar to entities of active social groups in self organizational communities. Users’ information may be shared by the user and also by the cooperative users, in distributed transmission. Cooperative communications and networking is a fairly new communication paradigm that promises significant capacity and multiplexing gain increase in wireless networks. This research will provide a cooperative relay selection framework that …

Algorithm Selection Via Ranking, Jayadi Oentaryo Richard, Handoko Stephanus Daniel, Hoong Chuin Lau Jan 2015

Algorithm Selection Via Ranking, Jayadi Oentaryo Richard, Handoko Stephanus Daniel, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The abundance of algorithms developed to solve different problems has given rise to an important research question: How do we choose the best algorithm for a given problem? Known as algorithm selection, this issue has been prevailing in many domains, as no single algorithm can perform best on all problem instances. Traditional algorithm selection and portfolio construction methods typically treat the problem as a classification or regression task. In this paper, we present a new approach that provides a more natural treatment of algorithm selection and portfolio construction as a ranking task. Accordingly, we develop a Ranking-Based Algorithm Selection (RAS) …

Solving Uncertain Mdps With Objectives That Are Separable Over Instantiations Of Model Uncertainty, Yossiri Adulyasak, Pradeep Varakantham, Asrar Ahmed, Patrick Jaillet Jan 2015

Solving Uncertain Mdps With Objectives That Are Separable Over Instantiations Of Model Uncertainty, Yossiri Adulyasak, Pradeep Varakantham, Asrar Ahmed, Patrick Jaillet

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Markov Decision Problems, MDPs offer an effective mechanism for planning under uncertainty. However, due to unavoidable uncertainty over models, it is difficult to obtain an exact specification of an MDP. We are interested in solving MDPs, where transition and reward functions are not exactly specified. Existing research has primarily focussed on computing infinite horizon stationary policies when optimizing robustness, regret and percentile based objectives. We focus specifically on finite horizon problems with a special emphasis on objectives that are separable over individual instantiations of model uncertainty (i.e., objectives that can be expressed as a sum over instantiations of model uncertainty): …

Semi-Universal Portfolios With Transaction Costs, Dingjiang Huang, Yan Zhu, Bin Li, Shuigeng Zhou, Steven C. H. Hoi Jan 2015

Semi-Universal Portfolios With Transaction Costs, Dingjiang Huang, Yan Zhu, Bin Li, Shuigeng Zhou, Steven C. H. Hoi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Online portfolio selection (PS) has been extensively studied in artificial intelligence and machine learning communities in recent years. An important practical issue of online PS is transaction cost, which is unavoidable and nontrivial in real financial trading markets. Most existing strategies, such as universal portfolio (UP) based strategies, often rebalance their target portfolio vectors at every investment period, and thus the total transaction cost increases rapidly and the final cumulative wealth degrades severely. To overcome the limitation, in this paper we investigate new investment strategies that rebalances its portfolio only at some selected instants. Specifically, we design a novel on-line …

Mechanism Design For Near Real-Time Retail Payment And Settlement Systems, Zhiling Guo, Robert John Kauffman, Mei Lin, Dan Ma Jan 2015

Mechanism Design For Near Real-Time Retail Payment And Settlement Systems, Zhiling Guo, Robert John Kauffman, Mei Lin, Dan Ma

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

have made extensive use of interbank netting systems, in which payments are accumulated for end-of-day settlement. This approach, known as deferred net settlement (DNS), reduces the liquidity needs of a payment system, but bears inherent operational risks. As large dollar volumes of retail payments accumulate swiftly, real-time gross settlement (RTGS) is an attractive option. It permits immediate settlement of transactions during the day, but it brings up other risks that require consideration. We propose a hybrid payment management system involving elements of both DNS and RTGS. We explore several hybrid system mechanism designs to allow payment prioritization, reduce payment delays, …

Reputationpro: The Efficient Approaches To Contextual Transaction Trust Computation In E-Commerce Environments, Haibin Zhang, Yan Wang, Xiuzhen Zhang, Ee Peng Lim Jan 2015

Reputationpro: The Efficient Approaches To Contextual Transaction Trust Computation In E-Commerce Environments, Haibin Zhang, Yan Wang, Xiuzhen Zhang, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In e-commerce environments, the trustworthiness of a seller is utterly important to potential buyers, especially when a seller is not known to them. Most existing trust evaluation models compute a single value to reflect the general trustworthiness of a seller without taking any transaction context information into account. With such a result as the indication of reputation, a buyer may be easily deceived by a malicious seller in a transaction where the notorious value imbalance problem is involved—in other words, a malicious seller accumulates a high-level reputation by selling cheap products and then deceives buyers by inducing them to purchase …

Software Puzzle: A Countermeasure To Resource-Inflated Denial-Of-Service Attacks, Yongdong Wu, Zhigang Zhao, Bao Feng, Robert H. Deng Jan 2015

Software Puzzle: A Countermeasure To Resource-Inflated Denial-Of-Service Attacks, Yongdong Wu, Zhigang Zhao, Bao Feng, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Denial-of-service (DoS) and distributed DoS (DDoS) are among the major threats to cyber-security, and client puzzle, which demands a client to perform computationally expensive operations before being granted services from a server, is a well-known countermeasure to them. However, an attacker can inflate its capability of DoS/DDoS attacks with fast puzzle-solving software and/or built-in graphics processing unit (GPU) hardware to significantly weaken the effectiveness of client puzzles. In this paper, we study how to prevent DoS/DDoS attackers from inflating their puzzle-solving capabilities. To this end, we introduce a new client puzzle referred to as software puzzle. Unlike the existing client …

Recovering Household Preferences For Digital Entertainment, Jin Li, Zhiling Guo, Robert J. Kauffman Jan 2015

Recovering Household Preferences For Digital Entertainment, Jin Li, Zhiling Guo, Robert J. Kauffman

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Cable TV return path data made possible by current generation set-top boxes present a new opportunity to analyze household viewing behavior and recover household viewing preferences from it. This research develops a model of household viewing preference that supports quantifying a household's valuation for different categories of digital content within the constraints of the programs to which it subscribes. This study uses a data set of more than 1 million observations on households from a digital entertainment firm that offers basic and premium services. Our estimation is via a Bayesian hierarchical model that employs the Gibbs sampler. The results show …

Multidimensional Context Awareness In Mobile Devices, Zhuo Wei, Robert H. Deng, Jialie Shen, Jixiang Zhu, Kun Ouyang, Yongdong Wu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the increase of mobile computation ability and the development of wireless network transmission technology, mobile devices not only are the important tools of personal life (e.g., education and entertainment), but also emerge as indispensable "secretary" of business activities (e.g., email and phone call). However, since mobile devices could work under complex and dynamic local and network conditions, they are vulnerable to local and remote security attacks. In real applications, different kinds of data protection are required by various local contexts. To provide appropriate protection, we propose a multidimensional context (MContext) scheme to comprehensively model and characterize the scene and …

Travel Recommendation Via Author Topic Model Based Collaborative Filtering, Shuhui Jiang, Xueming Qian, Jialie Shen, Tao Mei Jan 2015

Travel Recommendation Via Author Topic Model Based Collaborative Filtering, Shuhui Jiang, Xueming Qian, Jialie Shen, Tao Mei

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

While automatic travel recommendation has attracted a lot of attentions, the existing approaches generally suffer from different kinds of weaknesses. For example, sparsity problem can significantly degrade the performance of traditional collaborative filtering (CF). If a user only visits very few locations, accurate similar user identification becomes very challenging due to lack of sufficient information. Motivated by this concern, we propose an Author Topic Collaborative Filtering (ATCF) method to facilitate comprehensive Points of Interest (POIs) recommendation for social media users. In our approach, the topics about user preference (e.g., cultural, cityscape, or landmark) are extracted from the textual description of …

Improving Internet Security Through Mandatory Information Disclosure, Qian Tang, Andrew B. Whinston Jan 2015

Improving Internet Security Through Mandatory Information Disclosure, Qian Tang, Andrew B. Whinston

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Although disclosure has long been considered as a solution to internalize externalities, mandatory security information disclosure is still in debate. We propose a mandatory disclosure mechanism based on existing data. The information is disclosed as straightforward rankings of organizations for users to understand, interpret, and make comparisons. As a result, the disclosure can influence organizations through reputational effects. We created a public website to disclose information regularly and conducted a quasi-experiment on outgoing spam to test the effectiveness of our mechanism on four matched country groups. For each treated country, we released the ranking list of top 10 most spamming …

The Knowledge Accumulation And Transfer In Open-Source Software (Oss) Development, Youngsoo Kim, Lingxiao Jiang Jan 2015

The Knowledge Accumulation And Transfer In Open-Source Software (Oss) Development, Youngsoo Kim, Lingxiao Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We examine the learning curves of individual software developers in Open-Source Software (OSS) Development. We collected the dataset of multi-year code change histories from the repositories for 20 open source software projects involving more than 200 developers. We build and estimate regression models to assess individual developers' learning progress (in reducing the likelihood they make a bug). Our estimation results show that developer's coding and indirect bug-fixing experiences do not decrease bug ratios while bug-fixing experience can lead to the decrease of bug ratio of learning progress. We also find that developer's coding and bug-fixing experiences in other projects do …

A Comparative Study Of Two Different Fpga-Based Arrhythmia Classifier Architectures, Ahmet Turan Özdemi̇r, Kenan Danişman

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Early diagnosis of dangerous heart conditions is very important for the treatment of heart diseases and for the prevention of sudden cardiac death. Automatic electrocardiogram (ECG) arrhythmia classifiers are essential to timely diagnosis. However, most of the medical diagnosis systems proposed in the literature are software-based. This work focused on the hardware implementation of a mobile artificial neural network (ANN)-based arrhythmia classifier that is implemented on a field programmable gate array (FPGA) as a single chip solution, as an alternative to various software models of ANNs. Due to the parallel nature of ANNs, hardware implementation of ANNs needs a large …

A Real-Time American Sign Language Word Recognition System Based On Neural Networks And A Probabilistic Model, Neelesh Sarawate, Ming Chan. Leu, Cemi̇l Öz Jan 2015

A Real-Time American Sign Language Word Recognition System Based On Neural Networks And A Probabilistic Model, Neelesh Sarawate, Ming Chan. Leu, Cemi̇l Öz

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The development of an American Sign Language (ASL) word recognition system based on neural networks and a probabilistic model is presented. We use a CyberGlove and a Flock of Birds motion tracker to extract the gesture data. The finger joint angle data obtained from the sensory glove defines the handshape while the data from the motion tracker describes the trajectory of the hand movement. The four gesture features, namely handshape, hand position, hand orientation, and hand movement, are recognized using different functions that include backpropagation neural networks. The sequence of these features is used to generate a specific sign or …

Assessment Of Vehicular Transportation Quality Via Smartphones, Ahmet Alper Teci̇mer, Zi̇ya Ci̇han Tayşi̇, Ali̇ Gökhan Yavuz, Mi̇ne Eli̇f Karsligi̇l Yavuz

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Despite alternative transportation opportunities, road transportation still occupies an important part of our daily lives. Ever-advancing technological developments set high expectations of vehicular comfort and safety. Thus, it is necessary to develop systems that are able to detect and classify events related to the comfort and safety of vehicular transportation. Researchers have proposed several systems to monitor the quality of vehicular transportation. However, most of these systems are only capable of monitoring either road conditions or driving behaviors. Also, many of them are not easily applicable in real life because of special installation requirements and maintenance procedures with highly specialized …

Dual Open-End Stator Winding Induction Machine Fed By Redundant Voltage Source Inverters, Sami Guizani, Faouzi Ben Ammar Jan 2015

Dual Open-End Stator Winding Induction Machine Fed By Redundant Voltage Source Inverters, Sami Guizani, Faouzi Ben Ammar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, the authors propose the availability analysis of a dual open-end stator windings asynchronous machine. Each open-end stator winding is supplied by two PWM voltage source inverters. The active and passive redundancy of the inverters improves reliability, availability, and safety of the system since the loss of inverter losses does not stop the machine. Indeed, for active redundancy, in the case of failure of the inverter, the corresponding winding is disconnected and the other winding is supplied by the two healthy inverters. For passive redundancy, one winding is fed by two inverters and the two others are waiting; …

Analysis And Design Of An Interleaved Current-Fed High Step-Up Quasi-Resonant Dc-Dc Converter For Fuel Cell Applications, Sina Salehi, Behrooz Vahidi, Jafar Milimonfared, Maghdad Taheri, Hadi Moradi Jan 2015

Analysis And Design Of An Interleaved Current-Fed High Step-Up Quasi-Resonant Dc-Dc Converter For Fuel Cell Applications, Sina Salehi, Behrooz Vahidi, Jafar Milimonfared, Maghdad Taheri, Hadi Moradi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper proposes a current-fed quasi-resonant converter with soft switching method. Input current ripple is reduced by employing two boost circuits at the input, which makes this converter appropriate for fuel cell application. Current stress on switches is reduced because of the resonance in switches, and also, as a result of zero voltage switching in switches, switching losses will be reduced in this proposed converter. In the output, the reverse recovery problem of diodes is alleviated by zero current switching, so there is no need for fast diodes anymore. The reduction of losses improves the efficiency, and in a wide …

The Simulation And Production Of Glow Plugs Based On Thermal Modeling, Mustafa Saci̇d Endi̇z, Muci̇z Özcan, Mehmet Aki̇f Eri̇şmi̇ş, Mustafa Yağci, Hi̇dayet Günay

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this work, we present the thermal behavior of a glow plug examined with thermal impedance modeling. The circuit model is based on the analogy of thermal and electrical domains and expresses the glow plug used in diesel engines to preheat the air-diesel fuel mixture. In this study, the circuit design, implementation, and simulation of a glow plug for diesel engines are illustrated. In order to verify this thermal model, 2 different glow plugs are produced. The test results of the glow plugs produced in this study show complete agreement with the simulation results. It is thought that this circuit-based …

Impedance Modeling For Classification Of Flavored Green Teas, Munendra Singh, Sunil Semwal, Ashavani Kumar, Shailendra Singh Jan 2015

Impedance Modeling For Classification Of Flavored Green Teas, Munendra Singh, Sunil Semwal, Ashavani Kumar, Shailendra Singh

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper proposes an electrical impedance model of flavored green teas. Typically, impedance data of flavored green teas, obtained by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), fit into an equivalent circuit that represents the physical and chemical processes taking place in it. The total impedance of each flavor alone is not sufficient, but different values of impedance parameters in the electrical impedance model are responsible for better classification of flavored green teas. Successfully classified data on the basis of their flavors were obtained by different support vector machine (SVM) techniques with encouraging results. The results show that a linear SVM has better …

Improving The Drain-Current Expression Of Bsim4 For Hot-Carrier Degradation Modeling That Is Suitable For Analog Applications, Gürsel Düzenli̇ Jan 2015

Improving The Drain-Current Expression Of Bsim4 For Hot-Carrier Degradation Modeling That Is Suitable For Analog Applications, Gürsel Düzenli̇

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The reliability evaluation of MOS transistors is one of the most important subjects in device engineering and VLSI design. The down-scaling of device dimensions adversely affects device reliability and lifetime. Although different factors contribute to device reliability and lifetime, the most influential factor is hot-carrier degradation. Furthermore, hot-carrier degradation affects each application uniquely. In analog applications, hot-carrier degradation is more complex and diverse relative to digital applications. In this study, we improve the BSIM4 drain-current model to develop a hot-carrier degradation model that is suitable for both analog and digital applications. Our approach is readily applicable to all process technologies …

Multiagent-Based Simulation Of Simultaneous Electricity Market Auctions In Restructured Environment, Mohammad Farshad Jan 2015

Multiagent-Based Simulation Of Simultaneous Electricity Market Auctions In Restructured Environment, Mohammad Farshad

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In the restructured environment of the power industry, various commodities such as energy and operating reserves may be provided through simultaneous auctions. Prediction of market players' behavior in the auctions and simulation of the markets' environment can assist market decision-makers in evaluating specific policies before enforcing them in the real environment. Considering effects of the energy and varieties of reserve markets and also their interactions in the simulations is of high importance, which leads to more realistic simulation results. In this paper, an approach based on a multiagent system is proposed for simulating the simultaneous energy, spinning reserve, and replacement …

A New Method For Segmentation Of Microscopic Images On Activated Sludge, Hali̇me Boztoprak, Yüksel Özbay Jan 2015

A New Method For Segmentation Of Microscopic Images On Activated Sludge, Hali̇me Boztoprak, Yüksel Özbay

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Activated sludge samples were taken from the Konya Wastewater Treatment Plant. Two hundred images for each sample were captured by a systematic examination of the slides. Segmentation of microscopic images is a challenging process due to lack of focus. Therefore, adjustment of the focus is required for every movement of the mobile stage. Because the mobile stage does not have the z axis, the focus cannot be adjusted. A new method that uses automatic segmentation of the captured images is developed for solving this problem. The proposed method is not dependent on image content, has minimal computation complexity, and is …
