Characterizations Of Transmuted Complementary Weibull Geometric Distribution, Gholamhossein Hamedani
Characterizations Of Transmuted Complementary Weibull Geometric Distribution, Gholamhossein Hamedani
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
We present certain characterizations of a recently introduced distribution (Afify et al., 2014), called Transmuted Complementary Weibull Geometric distribution based on: hazard function ; a simple relation between two truncated moments. We like to mention that the characterization which is expressed in terms of the ratio of truncated moments is stable in the sense of weak convergence. It does not require a closed form for the cumulative distribution function and serves as a bridge between a first order differential equation and probability.

This study focuses on characteristics of written feedback that influence students’ performance and confidence in addressing the mathematical complexity embedded in a Model-Eliciting Activity (MEA). MEAs are authentic mathematical modeling problems that facilitate students’ iterative development of solutions in a realistic context. We analyzed 132 first-year engineering students’ confidence levels and mathematical model scores on aMEA(pre and post feedback), along with teaching assistant feedback given to the students. The findings show several examples of affective and cognitive feedback that students reported that they used to revise their models. Students’ performance and confidence in developing mathematical models can be increased when …
A Case Study Of Accelerator Performance, Esthela Gallardo
A Case Study Of Accelerator Performance, Esthela Gallardo
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
In recent years the designs of High Performance Computing (HPC) clusters have become more complex. This is due to the emergence of new processing elements, in particular Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and other many-core processors that can be combined with multi-core processors to enhance application performance. The design of a cluster includes processing elements that meet the needs of the applications that will run on the system. Unfortunately, it has become increasingly difficult to compare the performance of novel many-core processing elements due to the differences in their architectures. This work describes an attempt to develop a methodology for comparing …
Towards Analytical Techniques For Optimizing Knowledge Acquisition, Processing, Propagation, And Use In Cyberinfrastructure, Leonardo Octavio Lerma
Towards Analytical Techniques For Optimizing Knowledge Acquisition, Processing, Propagation, And Use In Cyberinfrastructure, Leonardo Octavio Lerma
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
For many decades, there has been a continuous progress in science and engineering applications.
A large part of this progress comes from the new knowledge that researchers acquire, propagate, and use. This new knowledge has revolutionized many aspects of our life, from driving to communications to shopping.
Somewhat surprisingly, there is one area of human activity which is the least impacted by the modern technological progress: the very processes of acquiring, processing, and propagating information. When we decide where to place sensors, which algorithm to use for processing the data – we rely mostly on our own intuition and on …

Three Essays On Global Ict Phenomenon: Productivity Paradox, Organizational Ict Use, And Privacy In Social Networks, Faruk Arslan
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This Dissertation aims to investigate the global diversity in information systems by studying three distinctive phenomena. The first essay investigates the existence of "IT Productivity Paradox" within firms operating in developing countries using an empirical approach. IT Productivity Paradox has been a widely investigated topic within the context of developed countries and primarily studied within the context of developing countries using a single country. Our research addresses a gap in the literature, which is the study of IT Productivity Paradox across several developing countries with diverse characteristics. The second essay studies the contextual factors (firm characteristics and perception of external …

A Client-Vendor Relationship Perspective Of Cultural Differences On Cross-Border Information Technology Outsourcing, John Kennedy Bosire
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Cross-border information technology (IT) outsourcing continues to rise due to the demand for business process outsourcing. Issues such as miscommunication and management problems have emerged because of cross-cultural disparities between clients and vendors across national borders. The theoretical framework of this study was based on the organizational culture model studies of Meek, Spradley, Smith, and Draft for examining and understanding complex organizational practices. The purpose of this mixed-methods explanatory sequential case study was to qualitatively identify and quantitatively determine the management approaches that are effective in managing cross-cultural differences and the constitution of the elements of global adjustment, motivation, mindset, …
Frontier: A Framework For Extracting And Organizing Biographical Facts In Historical Documents, Joseph Park
Frontier: A Framework For Extracting And Organizing Biographical Facts In Historical Documents, Joseph Park
Theses and Dissertations
The tasks of entity recognition through ontological commitment, fact extraction and organization with respect to a target schema, and entity deduplication have all been examined in recent years, and systems exist that can perform each individual task. A framework combining all these tasks, however, is still needed to accomplish the goal of automatically extracting and organizing biographical facts about persons found in historical documents into disambiguated entity records. We introduce FROntIER (Fact Recognizer for Ontologies with Inference and Entity Resolution) as the framework to recognize and extract facts using an ontology and organize facts of interest through inferring implicit facts …

High-Performance Simulations Of Coherent Synchrotron Radiation On Multicore Gpu And Cpu Platforms, B. Terzić, A. Godunov, K. Arumugam, D. Ranjan, M. Zubair
Physics Faculty Publications
Coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) is an effect of self-interaction of an electron bunch as it traverses a curved path. It can cause a significant emittance degradation and microbunching. We present a new high-performance 2D, particle-in-cell code which uses massively parallel multicore GPU/GPU platforms to alleviate computational bottlenecks. The code formulates the CSR problem from first principles by using the retarded scalar and vector potentials to compute the self-interaction fields. The speedup due to the parallel implementation on GPU/CPU platforms exceeds three orders of magnitude, thereby bringing a previously intractable problem within reach. The accuracy of the code is verified against …

In this paper, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations based on the modified-embedded atom method (MEAM) and a phase-field crystal (PFC) model are utilized to quantitatively investigate the solid-liquid properties of Fe. A set of second nearest-neighbor MEAM parameters for higherature applications are developed for Fe, and the solid-liquid coexisting approach is utilized in MD simulations to accurately calculate the melting point, expansion in melting, latent heat, and solid-liquid interface free energy, and surface anisotropy. The required input properties to determine the PFC model parameters, such as liquid structure factor and fluctuations of atoms in the solid, are also calculated from MD …

Child’s Play is a charity event hosted by the student chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery at the University of Akron. This event allows people to compete in various video game tournaments while simultaneously raising money for charity. In order to make this possible, a network is crucial. However, in previous years, the performance has been poor. The goal of this project is to implement a new network design which will offer more functionality and reliability than in previous years. This network will be able to operate completely inside of an existing network on a temporary basis. This design …
An Investigation In Implementing A C++ Voxel Game Engine With Destructible Terrain, Michael W. Wilder
An Investigation In Implementing A C++ Voxel Game Engine With Destructible Terrain, Michael W. Wilder
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
In video games today, world geometry is often represented as a polygon mesh. While this representation is able to represent terrain, it must be done so using an elevation grid. For each X and Z location, an elevation grid stores the height of the terrain at that location. This has a major drawback: it is unable to allow terrain with overhangs and caves, and is unable to allow for destructible terrain. In this project, an alternative technique using voxels is explored to overcome these limitations for a game engine. A voxel is the 3D equivalent of a pixel and allows …

Constrained Templates In C++, Braden L. Obrzut
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
This paper seeks to answer what C++ concepts are, the benefit they provide to C++ programmers, and where we would like to go looking ahead. To accomplish this, it will examine the current state of generic programming in C++, look at what other languages do to avoid the issue, and how concepts can be used to solve the problem in a manner which provides more freedom to the programmer. In the general sense, concepts allow the programmer to specify preconditions which must be satisfied on the inputs to generic code. The desire being to fully describe what is required by …

Evaluation Of The Signature Molecular Descriptor With Blosum62 And An All-Atom Description For Use In Sequence Alignment Of Proteins, Lindsay M. Aichinger
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
This Honors Project focused on a few aspects of this topic. The second is comparing the molecular signature kernels to three of the BLOSUM matrices (30, 62, and 90) to test the accuracy of the mathematical model. The kernel matrix was manipulated in order to improve the relationship by focusing on side groups and also by changing how the structure was represented in the matrix by increasing the initial height distance from the central atom (Height 1 and Height 2 included).
There were multiple design constraints for this project. The first was the comparison with the BLOSUM matrices (30, 62, …
On The Origin Of Protein Superfamilies And Superfolds, Abram Magner, Wojciech Szpankowski, Daisuke Kihara
On The Origin Of Protein Superfamilies And Superfolds, Abram Magner, Wojciech Szpankowski, Daisuke Kihara
Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Distributions of protein families and folds in genomes are highly skewed, having a small number of prevalent superfamiles/superfolds and a large number of families/folds of a small size. Why are the distributions of protein families and folds skewed? Why are there only a limited number of protein families? Here, we employ an information theoretic approach to investigate the protein sequence-structure relationship that leads to the skewed distributions. We consider that protein sequences and folds constitute an information theoretic channel and computed the most efficient distribution of sequences that code all protein folds. The identified distributions of sequences and folds are …

Parameters Estimation Of Material Constitutive Models Using Optimization Algorithms, Kiswendsida Jules Kere
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Optimization Algorithms are very useful for solving engineering problems. Indeed, optimization algorithms can be used to optimize engineering designs in terms of safety and economy. Understanding the proprieties of materials in engineering designs is very important in order to make designs safe. Materials are not really perfectly homogeneous and there are heterogeneous distributions in most materials. In this paper, Self-OPTIM which is an inverse constitutive parameter identification framework will be used to identify parameters of a linear elastic material constitutive model. Data for Self-OPTIM will be obtained using ABAQUS simulation of a dog-bone uniaxial test. Optimization Algorithms will be used …
Applying Hierarchical Task Analysis Method To Discovery Layer Evaluation, Marlen Promann, Tao Zhang
Applying Hierarchical Task Analysis Method To Discovery Layer Evaluation, Marlen Promann, Tao Zhang
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
While usability tests have been helpful in evaluating the success or failure of implementing discovery layers in the library context, the focus of usability tests has remained on the search interface rather than the discovery process for users. The informal site-‐ and context specific usability tests have offered little to test the rigor of the discovery layers against the user goals, motivations and workflow they have been designed to support. This study proposes hierarchical task analysis (HTA) as an important complementary evaluation method to usability testing of discovery layers. Relevant literature is reviewed for the discovery layers and the HTA …

Object tracking in real scenes is an important problem in computer vision due to increasing usage of tracking systems day in and day out in various applications such as surveillance, security, monitoring and robotic vision. Object tracking is the process of locating objects of interest in every frame of video frames. Many systems have been proposed to address the tracking problem where the major challenges come from handling appearance variation during tracking caused by changing scale, pose, rotation, illumination and occlusion.
In this dissertation, we address these challenges by introducing several novel tracking techniques. First, we developed a multiple object …
Shape Analysis Using Spectral Geometry, Jiaxi Hu
Shape Analysis Using Spectral Geometry, Jiaxi Hu
Wayne State University Dissertations
Shape analysis is a fundamental research topic in computer graphics and computer vision. To date, more and more 3D data is produced by those advanced acquisition capture devices, e.g., laser scanners, depth cameras, and CT/MRI scanners. The increasing data demands advanced analysis tools including shape matching, retrieval, deformation, etc. Nevertheless, 3D Shapes are represented with Euclidean transformations such as translation, scaling, and rotation and digital mesh representations are irregularly sampled. The shape can also deform non-linearly and the sampling may vary. In order to address these challenging problems, we investigate Laplace-Beltrami shape spectra from the differential geometry perspective, focusing more …
Predictable Real-Time Wireless Networking For Sensing And Control, Xiaohui Liu
Predictable Real-Time Wireless Networking For Sensing And Control, Xiaohui Liu
Wayne State University Dissertations
Towards the end goal of providing predictable real-time wireless networking for sensing and control, we have developed a real-time routing protocol MTA that predictably delivers data by their deadlines, and a scheduling protocol PRKS to ensure a certain link reliability based on the Physical-ratio-K (PRK) model, which is both realistic and amenable for distributed implementation, and a greedy scheduling algorithm to deliver as many packets as possible to the sink by a deadline in lossy multi-hop wireless sensor networks.
Real-time routing is a basic element of closed-loop, real-time sensing and control, but it is challenging due to dynamic, uncertain link/path …
