Innovating Additional Layer 2 Security Requirements For A Protected Stack, Brian Cusack, Raymond Lutui
Innovating Additional Layer 2 Security Requirements For A Protected Stack, Brian Cusack, Raymond Lutui
Australian Information Security Management Conference
Security is only as good as the weakest link and if the weakness is at a low level in the communication stack then every other Layer has potential to inherit the problem. The OSI Layer model has defined the theoretical architecture for network communications (ISO/IEC 7498-1). Standardisation assures that each element of an internetwork uses the same model and hence a message can be moved intelligibly and correctly between participants. The OSI model divides communications into seven hierarchical Layers that provide the necessary services from the application Layer through to the physical Layer of electricity (ISO/IEC 7498-2). Each Layer is …
Using Passive And Active Enumeration Methods To Improve Ipv6 Host Enumeration Search Algorithms, Clinton Carpene
Using Passive And Active Enumeration Methods To Improve Ipv6 Host Enumeration Search Algorithms, Clinton Carpene
Australian Information Security Management Conference
IPv6 off-link host enumeration, when compared to IPv4 host enumeration, is a difficult and expensive exercise. The expense arises from the difference in address space sizes between the two protocols, with IPv6 having a 296 larger address space than that of IPv4. This paper presents an algorithm for performing contextual IPv6 host enumeration against a target. The algorithm uses passive and active enumeration in order to focus the search upon areas of the address space where it is more probable that targets will exist. Experiments were conducted to test the proposed adaptive heuristic search algorithm involving applying the algorithm to …
The Challeges In Implementing Security In Spontaneous Ad Hoc Networks, Alastair Nisbet
The Challeges In Implementing Security In Spontaneous Ad Hoc Networks, Alastair Nisbet
Australian Information Security Management Conference
Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETS) promise much in the ability to rapidly deploy a wireless network in a fashion where no prior planning is needed and the network can be running efficiently and with high security within minutes. Natural disaster response, military, education and business provide areas where MANETS can offer significant advantages in communication where infrastructure networks may take days to set up or may be impossible to implement. This research reviews a selection of MANET protocols to show the progression of the research and the issues that are yet to be addressed. It discusses the challenges to researchers …

Optimistic And Parallel Ising Model Estimation, James Brofos, Rui Shu
Optimistic And Parallel Ising Model Estimation, James Brofos, Rui Shu
Computer Science Technical Reports
We consider a new method for estimating the structure of Ising graphical models from data. We assume that the data is observed with error, so that it is, in a sense, unreliable. We propose and investigate an ``optimistic'' estimator; that is, an approach that seeks to correct the log-likelihood objective function when some amount of the data is known to be mismeasured. We derive an interior point algorithm that constructs our estimator efficiently, and demonstrate that it leads naturally to a parallel procedure for recovering the graphical structure of Ising models. We show that the optimistic estimator has performance comparable …
An Abstract View On Modularity In Knowledge Representation, Yuliya Lierler, Miroslaw Truszczyński
An Abstract View On Modularity In Knowledge Representation, Yuliya Lierler, Miroslaw Truszczyński
Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Modularity is an essential aspect of knowledge representation and reasoning theory and practice. It has received substantial attention. We introduce model-based modular systems, an abstract framework for modular knowledge representation formalisms, similar in scope to multi-context systems but employing a simpler information-flow mechanism. We establish the precise relationship between the two frameworks, showing that they can simulate each other. We demonstrate that recently introduced modular knowledge representation formalisms integrating logic programming with satisfiability and, more generally, with constraint satisfaction can be cast as modular systems in our sense. These results show that our formalism offers a simple unifying framework for …

Subgoals Help Students Solve Parsons Problems, Briana B. Morrison, Lauren E. Margulieux, Barbara Ericson, Mark Guzdial
Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
We report on a study that used subgoal labels to teach students how to write while loops with a Parsons problem learning assessment. Subgoal labels were used to aid learning of programming while not overloading students' cognitive abilities. We wanted to compare giving learners subgoal labels versus asking learners to generate subgoal labels. As an assessment for learning we asked students to solve a Parsons problem – to place code segments in the correct order. We found that students who were given subgoal labels performed statistically better than the groups that did not receive subgoal labels or were asked to …
Reducing The Control Burden Of Legged Robotic Locomotion Through Biomimetic Consonance In Mechanical Design And Control, Caitrin Elizabeth Eaton
Reducing The Control Burden Of Legged Robotic Locomotion Through Biomimetic Consonance In Mechanical Design And Control, Caitrin Elizabeth Eaton
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Terrestrial robots must be capable of negotiating rough terrain if they are to become autonomous outside of the lab. Although the control mechanism offered by wheels is attractive in its simplicity, any wheeled system is confined to relatively flat terrain. Wheels will also only ever be useful for rolling, while limbs observed in nature are highly multimodal. The robust locomotive utility of legs is evidenced by the many animals that walk, run, jump, swim, and climb in a world full of challenging terrain.
On the other hand, legs with multiple degrees of freedom (DoF) require much more complex control and …
Impact Of Repeaters On The Performance Of Indoor Visible Light Communications, Refi̇k Çağlar Kizilirmak
Impact Of Repeaters On The Performance Of Indoor Visible Light Communications, Refi̇k Çağlar Kizilirmak
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this study, we examine the performance of fixed gain amplify-and-forward repeaters for visible light communication (VLC) systems. We present the wireless optical channel model for VLC with the repeater and we evaluate the bit-error-rate (BER) performance for pulse-position modulation over the multipath channel with additive white Gaussian noise. The results reveal that when a repeater is placed, both the BER and the illuminance performance can be improved at any location in a typical office space. The benefit of VLC repeaters is also discussed when the channel from the source to the destination is shadowed. It is found that when …

Impact Of Large-Scale Installation Of Led Lamps In A Distribution System, Sohel Uddin, Hussain Sharef, Olav Krause, Azah Mohamed, Mohammad Abdul Hannan, Naz Niamul Islam
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The aim of this paper was to examine the utilization of a large number of nonlinear light emitting diode (LED) lamps in a distribution system and its impact on system power quality. Initially, harmonic and others electrical characteristics were identified by carrying out an experiment on four types of LED lamps available on the local market. On the basis of the identified characteristics, a new LED lamp model was developed in MATLAB Simulink. This model is called the time-dependent current source model and gives more accurate results than the fixed current source model. Then this model was applied to a …
The Use Of Textural Kinetic Habitats To Mine Diagnostic Information From Dce Mr Images Of Breast Tumors, Baishali Chaudhury
The Use Of Textural Kinetic Habitats To Mine Diagnostic Information From Dce Mr Images Of Breast Tumors, Baishali Chaudhury
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Dynamic contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) of the breast is a widely used non-invasive approach to gather information about the underlying physiology of breast tumors. Recent studies indicate that breast tumor heterogeneity may reflect the presence of different levels of cellular aggressiveness or habitats within the tumor. This heterogeneity has been correlated to the variations in the contrast enhancement patterns within the tumor apparent on gadolinium-enhanced DCE-MRI. Although pathological and qualitative (based on contrast enhancement patterns) studies suggest the presence of clini- cal and molecular predictive tumor sub-regions, this has not been fully investigated in the quantitative domain.

Perfect Graphs, Chinh T. Hoang, R. Sritharan
Computer Science Faculty Publications
This chapter is a survey on perfect graphs with an algorithmic flavor. Our emphasis is on important classes of perfect graphs for which there are fast and efficient recognition and optimization algorithms. The classes of graphs we discuss in this chapter are chordal, comparability, interval, perfectly orderable, weakly chordal, perfectly contractile, and chi-bound graphs. For each of these classes, when appropriate, we discuss the complexity of the recognition algorithm and algorithms for finding a minimum coloring, and a largest clique in the graph and its complement.
Salient Object Detection Via Objectness Proposals, Tam Nguyen
Salient Object Detection Via Objectness Proposals, Tam Nguyen
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Salient object detection has gradually become a popular topic in robotics and computer vision research. This paper presents a real-time system that detects salient objects by integrating objectness, foreground, and compactness measures. Our algorithm consists of four basic steps. First, our method generates the objectness map via object proposals. Based on the objectness map, we estimate the background margin and compute the corresponding foreground map which prefers the foreground objects. From the objectness map and the foreground map, the compactness map is formed to favor the compact objects. We then integrate those cues to form a pixel-accurate saliency map which …

Predictive Analytics For Disease Condition Of Patients In Emergency Department, Azade Tabaie
Predictive Analytics For Disease Condition Of Patients In Emergency Department, Azade Tabaie
Wayne State University Theses
Emergency Departments (EDs) in hospitals are experiencing severe crowding and prolonged patient waiting times. The reported crowding in hospitals shows patients in hospital hallways, long waiting times and full occupancy of ED beds. ED crowding has several potential unfavorable effects including patients and staff frustration, lower patient satisfaction and poor health outcomes. The primary motivations behind this study are shortening the patients’ waiting time and improving patient satisfaction and level of care.
The very initial interaction between clinicians and a patient is recorded on nurse triage notes which contain details of the reason for patient’s visit including specific symptoms and …

Information theft or data exfiltration, whether personal or corporate, is now a lucrative mainstay of cybercrime activity. Recent security reports have suggested that while information, such as credit card data is still a prime target, other data such as corporate secrets, employee files and intellectual property are increasingly sought after on the black market. Malicious actors that are intent on exfiltrating valuable data, usually employ some form of Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) in order to exfiltrate large amounts of data over a long period of time with a high degree of covertness. Botnets are prime examples of APTs that are …

Computational Notebooks For Ai Education, Keith J. O'Hara, Doug Blank, James Marshall
Computer Science Faculty Research and Scholarship
Computational notebooks are documents that serve dual purposes: they serve as an archive format containing code, text, images and equations; but they can also be run like computer programs. This paper explores the use of these new computational notebooks to teach AI and introduces tools that we have developed — ICalico and Calysto — to facilitate that use. Not only do these new tools broaden the languages and contexts available to students exploring notebook-based AI computing, but they offer a new mode of teaching and learning for the AI classroom.

Injective Type Families For Haskell, Jan Stolarek, Simon Peyton Jones, Richard A. Eisenberg
Computer Science Faculty Research and Scholarship
Haskell, as implemented by the Glasgow Haskell Compiler (GHC), allows expressive type-level programming. The most popular type- level programming extension is TypeFamilies, which allows users to write functions on types. Yet, using type functions can cripple type inference in certain situations. In particular, lack of injectivity in type functions means that GHC can never infer an instantiation of a type variable appearing only under type functions. In this paper, we describe a small modification to GHC that allows type functions to be annotated as injective. GHC naturally must check validity of the injectivity annotations. The algorithm to do so is …
Eye-Tracktive: Measuring Attention To Body Parts When Judging Human Emotions, Cathy Ennis, Ludovic Hoyet, Carol O'Sullivan
Eye-Tracktive: Measuring Attention To Body Parts When Judging Human Emotions, Cathy Ennis, Ludovic Hoyet, Carol O'Sullivan
Conference papers
Virtual humans are often endowed with human-like characteristics to make them more appealing and engaging. Motion capture is a reliable way to represent natural motion on such characters, thereby allowing a wide range of animations to be automatically created and replicated. However, interpersonal differences in actors’ performances can be subtle and complex, yet have a strong effect on the human observer. Such effects can be very difficult to express quantitatively or indeed even qualitatively. We investigate two subjective human motion characteristics: attractiveness and distinctiveness. We conduct a perceptual experiment, where participants’ eye movements are tracked while they rate the motions …

Simulation Of Locating Buried Objects Via Fringe Pattern-Based Measurements In An Optical Fiber Sensor-Integrated Continuous-Wave Ground-Penetrating Radar System, Asaf Behzat Şahi̇n, Hati̇ce Gonca Bulur
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
A new ground-penetrating radar system that can determine the depth and position of a buried metal cylinder, which is the combination of an optical fiber sensor (OFS), continuous-wave transmitter, and optical communication link, is proposed and simulated in the MATLAB and Optiwave program packages. Employing an optical sensor instead of a standard radio frequency (RF) receiver offers the advantage of preventing electromagnetic interference along the sensor's main unit cable and lower amplification noise. In this paper, the electric field distribution at the OFS due to reflections from the soil surface and the buried object is obtained mathematically using Green's function. …
Intelligent Text Classification System Based On Self-Administered Ontology, Manoj Manuja, Deepak Garg
Intelligent Text Classification System Based On Self-Administered Ontology, Manoj Manuja, Deepak Garg
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Over the last couple of decades, web classification has gradually transitioned from a syntax- to semantic-centered approach that classifies the text based on domain ontologies. These ontologies are either built manually or populated automatically using machine learning techniques. A prerequisite condition to build such systems is the availability of ontology, which may be either full-fledged domain ontology or a seed ontology that can be enriched automatically. This is a dependency condition for any given semantics-based text classification system. We share the details of a proof of concept of a web classification system that is self-governed in terms of ontology population …
Moving As A Whole: Multirobot Traveling Problem Constrained By Connectivity, Yun Wang, Cheng Hu
Moving As A Whole: Multirobot Traveling Problem Constrained By Connectivity, Yun Wang, Cheng Hu
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
A multirobot system provides many advantages over a single robot. In certain situations, robots need to maintain global connectivity while proceeding through tasks such as traveling to spots of interest in an area. This paper formulates the problem of multiple robots traveling while constrained by connectivity and analyzes the limits of increase in total traveling distance (TTD) caused by connectivity constraints. A connection condition is proposed and proven, which can be used to direct the design of solutions. Two algorithms satisfying the connection condition, connected nearest neighbor (CNN) and bold Lin-Kernighan heuristic (B-LKH), are proposed to solve this problem, which …
Exact Solution Of Conducting Half Plane Problems In Terms Of A Rapidly Convergent Series And An Application Of The Multiplicative Calculus, Ali̇ Uzer
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The problem of cylindrical wave incidence on a conducting half plane has been considered. A modal solution for Green's function of the problem is transformed into contour integral representations in a complex plane. Some contour deformations and changes of variables are then made for the integrals. Finally, the resultant integrals are transformed back into a series, which converges rapidly to the exact solution when the observation angles are close to the reflection/shadow boundaries (RSBs) of the conducting half plane. The multiplicative calculus is employed in deriving an expression that can be used for obtaining approximate solutions when the observation angles …
Capacitive Sensor Supporting Multiple Touch Switches Using A Resistor String, Kwangsu Seong
Capacitive Sensor Supporting Multiple Touch Switches Using A Resistor String, Kwangsu Seong
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In a low-cost integrated circuit (IC) chip, the packaging cost is a considerable portion of the total manufacturing cost of the chip. As the packaging cost is directly related to the total number of I/O pins, it is highly desirable to minimize the number of I/O pins while maintaining the same functionality. We propose a capacitive sensor that supports multiple touch switches with only two IC pins. The electrode plates of the touch switches are placed at the ends of a resistor string and between every two adjacent resistors in the resistor string. The proposed method measures rise times at …

Optimal Backup Parent Pools For Resilient Multicast Trees On Peer-To-Peer Networks, Emrullah Turhan Tunali, Müge Sayit
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Due to churn as well as node and link failures in peer-to-peer (P2P) networks, providing resilient multicast is a challenging issue, particularly for overlay trees. In this work, we first study analytical properties of the backup parent pool that aims at improving the resilience of overlay multicast trees in P2P video streaming. We then present a novel greedy degree-constrained multicast tree construction algorithm that addresses the tradeoffs between maximizing resiliency, maximizing bandwidth utilization, and minimizing delay. The choice of essential design parameters is studied together with seamlessness of the streaming under a variety of fault scenarios. Simulation results indicate that …

Performance Evaluation Of Three Phase Srf-Pll And Maf-Srf-Pll, Anirban Ghoshal, Vinod John
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Synchronous reference frame phase locked loop (SRF-PLL) is a well established technique used for maintaining synchronism of a grid connected VSI with an electric grid. Many methods of PLL are present in the literature to achieve improved performance under nonideal grid condition. These solutions are based on SRF-PLL structure along with some modification to achieve improved performance. It is observed that faster and better performance are achieved at the expense of more computations. Moving average filter (MAF) SRF-PLL structure is one such solution that consumes less resources and gives a reasonably fast response. In this work the performance of a …

An Elegant Emergence Of Optimal Siting And Sizing Of Multiple Distributed Generators Used For Transmission Congestion Relief, Rajamanickam Manickaraj Sasiraja, Velu Suresh Kumar, Sankaralingam Ponmani
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
After the implementation of deregulation in a power system, an appreciable volume of renewable energy sources is used to generate electric power. Even though they are intended to improve the reliability of the power system, the unpredictable outages of generators or transmission lines, an impulsive increase in demand, and failures of other equipment lead to congestion in one or more transmission lines. There are several ways to alleviate this transmission congestion, such as the installation of new generation facilities in the place where the demand is high, the addition of a new transmission facility, generation rescheduling, and curtailment of load …
Building A Scalable Global Data Processing Pipeline For Large Astronomical Photometric Datasets, Paul Doyle
Building A Scalable Global Data Processing Pipeline For Large Astronomical Photometric Datasets, Paul Doyle
Other
Astronomical photometry is the science of measuring the flux of a celestial object. Since its introduction, the CCD has been the principle method of measuring flux to calculate the apparent magnitude of an object. Each CCD image taken must go through a process of cleaning and calibration prior to its use. As the number of research telescopes increases the overall computing resources required for image processing also increases. Existing processing techniques are primarily sequential in nature, requiring increasingly powerful servers, faster disks and faster networks to process data. Existing High Performance Computing solutions involving high capacity data centres are complex …
