Mobile Device Damage And The Challenges To The Modern Investigator, Dan Blackman
Mobile Device Damage And The Challenges To The Modern Investigator, Dan Blackman
Australian Digital Forensics Conference
Mobile Forensics has developed into an area of significant concern to law enforcement agencies and their counterparts, specifically as a result of individuals moving away from using traditional computers and focusing attention on their mobile device. Due to the smart phone being almost permanently attached to the person or in near proximity, it has become a significant source of information for investigators and can mean the difference between proving guilt or innocence. Tools have long been established, which provide agencies the ability to encapsulate expertise, which allows the easy download and production of reports for the mobile device and how …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations
The MapReduce framework is a programming model proposed by Google to process large datasets. It is an efficient framework that can be used in many areas, such as social network, scientific research, electronic business, etc. Hence, more and more MapReduce frameworks are implemented on different platforms, including Phoenix (based on multicore CPU), MapCG (based on GPU), and StreamMR (based on GPU). However, these MapReduce frameworks have limitations, and they cannot handle the collision problem in the map phase, and the unbalanced workload problems in the reduce phase. To improve the performance of the MapReduce framework on GPGPUs, in this thesis, …

There are too few secondary school computing teachers to meet international needs for growing secondary school computing education. Our group has created an ebook to help prepare secondary teachers to teach the programming and big data concepts in the new AP Computer Science Principles course. The ebook was designed using principles from educational psychology, specifically worked examples and cognitive load. The ebook interleaves worked examples and interactive practice activities, which we believe will lead to more efficient and effective learning than more typical approaches to learning programming. This paper reports the results from initial studies of our ebook. First, we …

Knowledge bases have been used to improve performance in applications ranging from web search and event detection to entity recognition and disambiguation. More recently, knowledge bases have been used to analyze social data. A key challenge in social data analysis has been the identification of the geographic location of online users in a social network such as Twitter. Existing approaches to predict the location of users, based on their tweets, rely solely on social media features or probabilistic language models. These approaches are supervised and require large training dataset of geo-tagged tweets to build their models. As most Twitter users …

Mining Behavior Of Citizen Sensor Communities To Improve Cooperation With Organizational Actors, Hemant Purohit
Kno.e.sis Publications
Web 2.0 (social media) provides a natural platform for dynamic emergence of citizen (as) sensor communities, where the citizens generate content for sharing information and engaging in discussions. Such a citizen sensor community (CSC) has stated or implied goals that are helpful in the work of formal organizations, such as an emergency management unit, for prioritizing their response needs. This research addresses questions related to design of a cooperative system of organizations and citizens in CSC. Prior research by social scientists in a limited offline and online environment has provided a foundation for research on cooperative behavior challenges, including ‘ …
Introduction To Mips Assembly Language Programming, Charles W. Kann
Introduction To Mips Assembly Language Programming, Charles W. Kann
Open Educational Resources
This book was written to introduce students to assembly language programming in MIPS. As with all assembly language programming texts, it covers basic operators and instructions, subprogram calling, loading and storing memory, program control, and the conversion of the assembly language program into machine code.
However this book was not written simply as a book on assembly language programming. The larger purpose of this text is to show how concepts in Higher Level Languages (HLL), such as Java or C/C++, are represented in assembly. By showing how program constructs from these HLL map into assembly, the concepts will be easier …
Fail-Safe Testing Of Web Applications, Salah Boukhris
Fail-Safe Testing Of Web Applications, Salah Boukhris
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation introduces an approach to generate tests to test fail-safe behavior for web applications. We apply the approach to a commercial web application. We build models for both behavioral and mitigation requirements. We create mitigation tests from an existing functional black box test suite by determining failure type and points of failure in the test suite and weaving required mitigation based on weaving rules to generate a test suite that tests proper mitigation of failures. A genetic algorithm (GA) is used to determine points of failure and type of failure that needs to be tested. Mitigation test paths are …
Generating Plans In Concurrent, Probabilistic, Over-Subscribed Domains, Li Li
Generating Plans In Concurrent, Probabilistic, Over-Subscribed Domains, Li Li
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Planning in realistic domains typically involves reasoning under uncertainty, operating under time and resource constraints, and finding the optimal subset of goals to work on. Creating optimal plans that consider all of these features is a computationally complex, challenging problem. This dissertation develops an AO* search based planner named CPOAO* (Concurrent, Probabilistic, Over-subscription AO*) which incorporates durative actions, time and resource constraints, concurrent execution, over-subscribed goals, and probabilistic actions. To handle concurrent actions, action combinations rather than individual actions are taken as plan steps. Plan optimization is explored by adding two novel aspects to plans. First, parallel steps that serve …

Cloud computing offers services which promise to meet continuously increasing computing demands by using a large number of networked resources. However, data heterogeneity remains a major hurdle for data interoperability and data integration. In this context, a Knowledge as a Service (KaaS) approach has been proposed with the aim of generating knowledge from heterogeneous data and making it available as a service. In this paper, a Collaborative Knowledge as a Service (CKaaS) architecture is proposed, with the objective of satisfying consumer knowledge needs by integrating disparate cloud knowledge through collaboration among distributed KaaS entities. The NIST cloud computing reference architecture …

Replication is one of the main techniques aiming to improve Web services’ (WS) quality of service (QoS) in distributed environments, including clouds and mobile devices. Service replication is a way of improving WS performance and availability by creating several copies or replicas of Web services which work in parallel or sequentially under defined circumstances. In this paper, a generalized replication process for distributed environments is discussed based on established replication studies. The generalized replication process consists of three main steps: sensing the environment characteristics, determining the replication strategy, and implementing the selected replication strategy. To demonstrate application of the generalized …

Recently, cyber-targeted attacks such as APT (Advanced Persistent Threat) are rapidly growing as a social and national threat. It is an intelligent cyber-attack that infiltrates the target organization and enterprise clandestinely using various methods and causes considerable damage by making a final attack after long-term and through preparations. These attacks are threatening cyber worlds such as Internet by infecting and attacking the devices on this environment with the malicious code, and by destroying them or gaining their authorities. Detecting these attacks requires collecting and analysing data from various sources (network, host, security equipment, and devices) over the long haul. Therefore, …

munication, and social interaction. In addition to the demand for an acceptable level of performance and a comprehensive set of features, users often desire extended battery lifetime. In fact, limited battery lifetime is one of the biggest obstacles facing the current utility and future growth of increasingly sophisticated ‘‘smart’’ mobile devices. This paper proposes a novel application-aware and user-interaction aware energy optimization middleware framework (AURA) for pervasive mobile devices. AURA optimizes CPU and screen backlight energy consumption while maintaining a minimum acceptable level of performance. The proposed framework employs a novel Bayesian application classifier and management strategies based on Markov …
The Challenges Of Seizing And Searching The Contents Of Wi-Fi Devices For The Modern Investigator, Dan Blackman, Patryk Szewczyk
The Challenges Of Seizing And Searching The Contents Of Wi-Fi Devices For The Modern Investigator, Dan Blackman, Patryk Szewczyk
Australian Digital Forensics Conference
To the modern law enforcement investigator, the potential for an offender to have a mobile device on his or her person, who connects to a Wi-Fi network, may afford evidence to place them at a scene, at a particular time. Whilst tools to interrogate mobile devices and Wi-Fi networks, have undergone significant development, little research has been conducted with regards to interrogating Wi-Fi routers and the evidence they may contain. This paper demonstrates that multiple inhibiting factors exist for forensic investigators when attempting to extract data from Wi-Fi routers at the scene. Data volatility means the Wi-Fi router cannot be …
Novel Incorportation Of Biomedical Engineering Algorithms (Bispectral Index Guided Or Anesthetic Concentration Guided) In Real-Time Decision Support To Prevent Intraoperative Awareness Using An Electronic Anesthesia Information Mananagement System, Amy Melanie Shanks
Wayne State University Dissertations
Background: Intraoperative awareness with explicit recall (AWR) is a feared complication of surgery that can lead to significant psychological distress. Several large prospective trials have been completed comparing two methods of monitoring anesthetic depth [minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) or electroencephalography (EEG) monitoring using the bispectral index (BIS)] for the prevention of AWR. However, these trials were conducted in high risk populations, limiting generalizability.
Research Hypothesis: Real-time decision support with Anesthesia Information Management System alerts based on a novel anesthetic concentration algorithm (incorporating the use of intravenous anesthetics) or an EEG-guided algorithm will reduce the known incidence of AWR.
Methods: First, …

We discuss the nature of Big Data and address the role of semantics in analyzing and processing Big Data that arises in the context of Physical-Cyber-Social Systems. To handle Volume, we advocate semantic perception that can convert low-level observational data to higher-level abstractions more suitable for decision- making. To handle Variety, we resort to semantic models and annotations of data so that intelligent processing can be done independent of heterogeneity of data formats and media. To handle Velocity, we seek to use continuous semantics capability to dynamically create event or situation specific models and recognize relevant new concepts, entities and …

Privacy Policy Inference Of User-Uploaded Images On Content Sharing Sites, Anna Cinzia Squicciarini, Dan Lin, Smitha Sundareswaran, Joshua Wede
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
With the increasing volume of images users share through social sites, maintaining privacy has become a major problem, as demonstrated by a recent wave of publicized incidents where users inadvertently shared personal information. In light of these incidents, the need of tools to help users control access to their shared content is apparent. Toward addressing this need, we propose an Adaptive Privacy Policy Prediction (A3P) system to help users compose privacy settings for their images. We examine the role of social context, image content, and metadata as possible indicators of users' privacy preferences. We propose a two-level framework which according …
How To Test Hypotheses When Exact Values Are Replaced By Intervals To Protect Privacy: Case Of T-Tests, Vladik Kreinovich, Christian Servin
How To Test Hypotheses When Exact Values Are Replaced By Intervals To Protect Privacy: Case Of T-Tests, Vladik Kreinovich, Christian Servin
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Researchers continuously look for possible relations between relevant quantities, e.g., relations which may help in preventing and curing diseases. Once a hypothesis is made about such a relation, it is necessary to test whether it is confirmed by the data. For such hypothesis testing, t-tests are most widely used. For example, a t-test can check, based on two samples, whether it is possible that they come from distributions with the same mean -- e.g., whether the average blood pressure after a proposed treatment is the same as before or it is provably smaller -- meaning that the tested treatment works. …

A Prediction Modeling Framework For Noisy Welding Quality Data, Junheung Park
A Prediction Modeling Framework For Noisy Welding Quality Data, Junheung Park
Wayne State University Dissertations
Numerous and various research projects have been conducted to utilize historical manufacturing process data in product design. These manufacturing process data often contain data inconsistencies, and it causes challenges in extracting useful information from the data. In resistance spot welding (RSW), data inconsistency is a well-known issue. In general, such inconsistent data are treated as noise data and removed from the original dataset before conducting analyses or constructing prediction models. This may not be desirable for every design and manufacturing applications since every data can contain important information to further explain the process. In this research, we propose a prediction …

During the fall semester of 2012, the Kimbel Library and Bryan Information Commons conducted a LibQUAL+ survey to gauge how patron needs were being met. Many survey respondents commented that there were not enough computers for use in the library buildings. This issue was remedied by the addition of over 70 percent more computer workstations in the new commons building, a move that was well received by patrons. However, these desktops still filled up quickly, especially during midterms and finals, so the library decided to create a dynamic system to show patrons which computers were available for use at any …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Ben In Localizing Different Types Of Software Fault, Jaganmohan Chandrasekaran
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
Debugging refers to the activity of locating software faults in a program and is considered to be one of the most challenging tasks during software development. Automated fault localization tools have been developed to reduce the amount of effort and time software developers have to spend on debugging. In this thesis, we evaluate the effectiveness of a fault localization tool called BEN in locating different types of software faults. Assuming that combinatorial testing has been performed on the subject program, BEN leverages the result obtained from combinatorial testing to perform fault localization. Our evaluation focuses on how the following three …

This paper presents BigDAWG, a reference implementation of a new architecture for “Big Data” applications. Such applications not only call for large-scale analytics, but also for real-time streaming support, smaller analytics at interactive speeds, data visualization, and cross-storage-system queries. Guided by the principle that “one size does not fit all”, we build on top of a variety of storage engines, each designed for a specialized use case. To illustrate the promise of this approach, we demonstrate its effectiveness on a hospital application using data from an intensive care unit (ICU). This complex application serves the needs of doctors and researchers …

We define a compilation scheme for a constructor-based, strongly-sequential, graph rewriting system which shortcuts some needed steps. The object code is another constructor-based graph rewriting system. This system is normalizing for the original system when using an innermost strategy. Consequently, the object code can be easily implemented by eager functions in a variety of programming languages. We modify this object code in a way that avoids total or partial construction of the contracta of some needed steps of a computation. When computing normal forms in this way, both memory consumption and execution time are reduced compared to ordinary rewriting computations …
