A Makeover For The Captured Lecture: Applying Multimedia Learning Principles To Lecture Video, Richard Alan Lamb
A Makeover For The Captured Lecture: Applying Multimedia Learning Principles To Lecture Video, Richard Alan Lamb
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Making video recordings of large classroom lectures and putting them online is increasingly common in distance and blended learning courses. However, the best way to use lecture video is not well understood. Using long streams of one-way communication is not consistent with best practices in online learning. During lectures, students assume a largely passive role. They think faster than instructors speak, so boredom and daydreaming are common. Yet, when complex or novel ideas are presented, students may have inadequate time to encode, organize, and integrate the input with prior experience. Especially for students with low prior knowledge of the subject …
Leveraging Contextual Relationships Between Objects For Localization, Clinton Leif Olson
Leveraging Contextual Relationships Between Objects For Localization, Clinton Leif Olson
Dissertations and Theses
Object localization is currently an active area of research in computer vision. The object localization task is to identify all locations of an object class within an image by drawing a bounding box around objects that are instances of that class. Object locations are typically found by computing a classification score over a small window at multiple locations in the image, based on some chosen criteria, and choosing the highest scoring windows as the object bounding-boxes. Localization methods vary widely, but there is a growing trend towards methods that are able to make localization more accurate and efficient through the …
Experimental Investigation Of Stochastic Parafoil Guidance Using A Graphics Processing Unit, Nathan Slegers, Andrew Brown, Jonathan Rogers
Experimental Investigation Of Stochastic Parafoil Guidance Using A Graphics Processing Unit, Nathan Slegers, Andrew Brown, Jonathan Rogers
Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering
Control of autonomous systems subject to stochastic uncertainty is a challenging task. In guided airdrop applications, random wind disturbances play a crucial role in determining landing accuracy and terrain avoidance. This paper describes a stochastic parafoil guidance system which couples uncertainty propagation with optimal control to protect against wind and parameter uncertainty in the presence of impact area obstacles. The algorithm uses real-time Monte Carlo simulation performed on a graphics processing unit (GPU) to evaluate robustness of candidate trajectories in terms of delivery accuracy, obstacle avoidance, and other considerations. Building upon prior theoretical developments, this paper explores performance of the …

How Geophysicists' Intuition Helps Seismic Data Processing, Afshin Gholamy, Vladik Kreinovich

In geophysics, signals come with noise. It is desirable to minimize the effect of this noise. If we knew the probabilities of different values of signal and noise, we could use statistical filtering techniques. In geophysics, however, we rarely know the exact values of these probabilities; instead, we have to rely on the expertise and intuition of experts. We show how fuzzy techniques can transform this expertise into precise de-noising methods, we explain that the resulting methods indeed satisfy several natural requirements, and that these methods are in good accordance with heuristic techniques successfully used by geophysicists.

Assessing The Emphasis On Information Security In The Systems Analysis And Design Course, William David Salisbury, Thomas W. Ferratt, Donald E. Wynn
MIS/OM/DS Faculty Publications
Due to several recent highly publicized information breaches, information security has gained a higher profile. Hence, it is reasonable to expect that information security would receive an equally significant emphasis in the education of future systems professionals. A variety of security standards that various entities (e.g., NIST, COSO, ISACA-COBIT, ISO) have put forth emphasize the importance of information security from the very beginning of the system development lifecycle (SDLC) to avoid significant redesign in later phases. To determine the emphasis on security in typical systems analysis and design (SA&D) courses, we examine (1) to what extent security is emphasized in …

How Success In A Task Depends On The Skills Level: Two Uncertainty-Based Justifications Of A Semi-Heuristic Rasch Model, Joe Lorkowski, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
The more skills a student acquires, the more successful this student is with the corresponding tasks. Empirical data shows that the success in a task grows as a logistic function of skills; this dependence is known as the Rasch model. In this paper, we provide two uncertainty-based justifications for this model: the first justification provides a simple fuzzy-based intuitive explanation for this model, while the second -- more complex one -- explains the exact quantitative behavior of the corresponding dependence.

How To Speed Up Software Migration And Modernization: Successful Strategies Developed By Precisiating Expert Knowledge, Francisco Zapata, Octavio Lerma, Leobardo Valera, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Computers are getting faster and faster; the operating systems are getting more sophisticated. Often, these improvements necessitate that we migrate the existing software to the new platform. In the ideal world, the migrated software should run perfectly well on a new platform; however, in reality, when we try that, thousands of errors appear, errors that need correcting. As a result, software migration is usually a very time-consuming process. A natural way to speed up this process is to take into account that errors naturally fall into different categories, and often, a common correction can be applied to all error from …
Why It Is Important To Precisiate Goals, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen
Why It Is Important To Precisiate Goals, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
After Zadeh and Bellman explained how to optimize a function under fuzzy constraints, there have been many successful applications of this optimization. However, in many practical situations, it turns out to be more efficient to precisiate the objective function before performing optimization. In this paper, we provide a possible explanation for this empirical fact.
Simple Linear Interpolation Explains All Usual Choices In Fuzzy Techniques: Membership Functions, T-Norms, T-Conorms, And Defuzzification, Vladik Kreinovich, Jonathan Quijas, Esthela Gallardo, Caio De Sa Lopes, Olga Kosheleva, Shahnaz Shahbazova
Simple Linear Interpolation Explains All Usual Choices In Fuzzy Techniques: Membership Functions, T-Norms, T-Conorms, And Defuzzification, Vladik Kreinovich, Jonathan Quijas, Esthela Gallardo, Caio De Sa Lopes, Olga Kosheleva, Shahnaz Shahbazova
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Most applications of fuzzy techniques use piece-wise linear (triangular or trapezoid) membership functions, min or product t-norms, max or algebraic sum t-conorms, and centroid defuzzification. Similarly, most applications of interval-valued fuzzy techniques use piecewise-linear lower and upper membership functions. In this paper, we show that all these choices can be explained as applications of simple linear interpolation.

Studies in human and non-human primates have confirmed the compensatory enlargement or positive remodeling (Glagov phenomenon) of coronary vessels in the presence of focal stenosis. To our knowledge, this is the first study to document arterial enlargement in a metabolic syndrome animal model with diffuse coronary artery disease (DCAD) in the absence of severe focal stenosis. Two different groups of Ossabaw miniature pigs were fed a high fat atherogenic diet for 4 months (Group I) and 12 months (Group II), respectively. Group I (6 pigs) underwent contrast enhanced computed tomographic angiography (CCTA) and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) at baseline and after …
Fail-Safe Test Generation Of Safety Critical Systems, Salwa Elakeili
Fail-Safe Test Generation Of Safety Critical Systems, Salwa Elakeili
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation introduces a technique for testing proper failure mitigation in safety critical systems. Unlike other approaches which integrate behavioral and failure models, and then generate tests from the integrated model, we build safety mitigation tests from an existing behavioral test suite, using an explicit mitigation model for which we generate mitigation paths which are then woven at selected failure points into the original test suite to create failure-mitigation tests (safety mitigation test).

In this paper, we introduce DRIH-MAC, a distributed receiver-initiated medium access control protocol for communication among nano nodes in a wireless electromagnetic nanonetwork. DRIH-MAC is developed based on the following principles: 1) communication starts via the receiver with the goal of maximizing the energy utilization; 2) the distributed scheme for accessing the medium is designed based on graph coloring; and 3) communication scheduling works in coordination with the energy harvesting process. DRIH-MAC is based on a probabilistic scheme to create a scalable and light-weight solution, which minimizes collisions and maximizes the utilization of harvested energy and can be used in …

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
The emerging growth of online social networks has opened new doors for various kinds of applications such as business intelligence and expanding social connections through friend recommendations. In particular, friend recommendation facilitates users to explore new friendships based on social network structures, user profile information (similar interest) or both. However, as the privacy concerns of users are on the rise, searching for new friends is not a straightforward task under the assumption that users' information is kept private. Along this direction, this paper proposes two private friend recommendation algorithms based on the social network structure and the users' social tags. …

Delay Line As A Chemical Reaction Network, Josh Moles, Peter Banda, Christof Teuscher
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Chemistry as an unconventional computing medium presently lacks a systematic approach to gather, store, and sort data over time. To build more complicated systems in chemistries, the ability to look at data in the past would be a valuable tool to perform complex calculations. In this paper we present the first implementation of a chemical delay line providing information storage in a chemistry that can reliably capture information over an extended period of time. The delay line is capable of parallel operations in a single instruction, multiple data (SIMD) fashion.
Using Michaelis-Menten kinetics, we describe the chemical delay line implementation …

Examining Social Network Site Usage By Older Adults: A Phenomenological Approach, Betsy Baugess
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
The Internet has infiltrated our daily lives in many ways. Social networking on the Internet is a great example of how the Internet has expanded interpersonal communication. Many individuals have made social networking sites, like FaceBook and Twitter, an essential part of their lives and use these platforms to communicate daily. Until recently, young people have been the primary participants in this fast-growing phenomenon, and older adults' participation in the Internet, specifically social networking sites, has lagged far behind. However, in recent years, there has been a noteworthy increase in the number of older adult participants. The increase in older …

Many websites are adapting their content for users who are accessing the Web using smartphones and tablets. The growth of this Mobile Web has required web archivists to change their practices in order to collect this ephemeral web content. We have created a tool called MobileFinder which can be used to automatically detect mobile pages when given the URL of a desktop web page. We used this tool in an experiment to gauge what techniques popular websites are currently using to expose mobile content, and we incorporated the tool into Heritrix to demonstrate its usefulness to the web archiving community.

Privacy Leakage Analysis In Online Social Networks, Yan Li, Yingjiu Li, Qiang Yan, Deng, Robert H.
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Online Social Networks (OSNs) have become one of the major platforms for social interactions, such as building up relationship, sharing personal experiences, and providing other services. The wide adoption of OSNs raises privacy concerns due to personal data shared online. Privacy control mechanisms have been deployed in popular OSNs for users to determine who can view their personal information. However, user's sensitive information could still be leaked even when privacy rules are properly configured. We investigate the effectiveness of privacy control mechanisms against privacy leakage from the perspective of information flow. Our analysis reveals that the existing privacy control mechanisms …

Low-energy (E0 0=65eV) electron-impact single ionization of Ne (2p) has been investigated to thoroughly test state-of-the-art theoretical approaches. The experimental data were measured using a reaction microscope, which can cover nearly the entire 4π solid angle for the secondary electron emission energies ranging from 2 to 8 eV, and projectile scattering angles ranging from 8.5⁰ to 20.0⁰. The experimental triple-differential cross sections are internormalized across all measured scattering angles and ejected energies. The experimental data are compared to predictions from a hybrid second-order distorted-wave Born plus R-matrix approach, the distorted-wave Born approximation with the inclusion of postcollision interaction (PCI), …
Detecting Learning Styles In Video Games, Benjamin Cooley
Detecting Learning Styles In Video Games, Benjamin Cooley
Master's Theses
Video games are increasingly becoming more intelligent, able to adapt themselves to the individual gamer. Learning styles are a set of models used to categorize people into different types of learners to explain why some people learn better through different methods. Since learning and exploration are such fundamental parts of the video game experience, it is interesting to consider the possibility of applying these learning style models to video games, allowing the video game to adapt to its player, providing a better experience. To consider such adaptation, the game must first be able to detect that learning style from how …

In real world domains, from healthcare to power to finance, we deploy computer systems intended to streamline and improve the activities of human agents in the corresponding non-cyber worlds. However, talking to actual users (instead of just computer security experts) reveals endemic circumvention of the computer-embedded rules. Good-intentioned users, trying to get their jobs done, systematically work around security and other controls embedded in their IT systems. This paper reports on our work compiling a large corpus of such incidents and developing a model based on semiotic triads to examine security circumvention. This model suggests that mismorphisms---mappings that fail to …

Face recognition in video has attracted attention as a cryptic method of human identification in surveillance systems. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end video face recognition system, addressing a difficult problem of identifying human faces in video due to the presence of large variations in facial pose and expression, and poor video resolution. The proposed descriptor, named Volumetric Directional Pattern (VDP), is an oriented and multi-scale volumetric descriptor that is able to extract and fuse the information of multi frames, temporal (dynamic) information, and multiple poses and expressions of faces in input video to produce feature vectors, which are …

A persistent question in the deception literature has been the extent to which nonverbal behaviors can reliably distinguish between truth and deception. It has been argued that deception instigates cognitive load and arousal that are betrayed through visible nonverbal indicators. Yet, empirical evidence has often failed to find statistically significant or strong relationships. Given that interpersonal message production is characterized by a high degree of simultaneous and serial patterning among multiple behaviors, it may be that patterns of behaviors are more diagnostic of veracity. Or it may be that the theorized linkage between internal states of arousal, cognitive taxation, and …

Principal component analysis (PCA) is a popular dimension-reduction method to reduce the complexity and obtain the informative aspects of high-dimensional datasets. When the data distribution is skewed, data transformation is commonly used prior to applying PCA. Such transformation is usually obtained from previous studies, prior knowledge, or trial-and-error. In this work, we develop a model-based method that integrates data transformation in PCA and finds an appropriate data transformation using the maximum profile likelihood. Extensions of the method to handle functional data and missing values are also developed. Several numerical algorithms are provided for efficient computation. The proposed method is illustrated …

In this paper, an effective decision process method is proposed to address the challenge in a multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem because of large number of criteria. This method is based on the criteria reduction, tolerance relation, and prospect theory (PT). By building a discernibility matrix for tolerance relation (DMTR) in an MCDM problem with numerical values or interval numbers, this method first allows us to recognize a set of critical criteria from a large criteria pool and ignore the other criteria. Next, it establishes the criteria weights through the DMTR as they are usually not indicated in the data. …
