Parallel Symmetric Eigenvalue Problem Solvers, Alicia Marie Klinvex Apr 2015

Parallel Symmetric Eigenvalue Problem Solvers, Alicia Marie Klinvex

Open Access Dissertations

Sparse symmetric eigenvalue problems arise in many computational science and engineering applications: in structural mechanics, nanoelectronics, and spectral reordering, for example. Often, the large size of these problems requires the development of eigensolvers that scale well on parallel computing platforms. In this dissertation, we describe two such eigensolvers, TraceMin and TraceMin-Davidson. These methods are different from many other eigensolvers in that they do not require accurate linear solves to be performed at each iteration in order to find the smallest eigenvalues and their associated eigenvectors. After introducing these closely related eigensolvers, we discuss alternative methods for solving the saddle point …

Video Advertisement Mining For Predicting Revenue Using Random Forest, Yuan Hsin Huang

Open Access Theses

Shaken by the threat of financial crisis in 2008, industries began to work on the topic of predictive analytics to efficiently control inventory levels and minimize revenue risks. In this third-generation age of web-connected data, organizations emphasized the importance of data science and leveraged the data mining techniques for gaining a competitive edge. Consider the features of Web 3.0, where semantic-oriented interaction between humans and computers can offer a tailored service or product to meet consumers' needs by means of learning their preferences. In this study, we concentrate on the area of marketing science to demonstrate the correlation between TV …

Why Big-O And Little-O In Algorithm Complexity: A Pedagogical Remark, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Apr 2015

Why Big-O And Little-O In Algorithm Complexity: A Pedagogical Remark, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In the comparative analysis of different algorithm, O- and o-notions are frequently used. While their use is productive, most textbooks do not provide a convincing student-oriented explanation of why these particular notations are useful in algorithm analysis. In this note, we provide such an explanation.

A Corpus For Investigating English-Language Learners' Dialog Behaviors, Nigel Ward, Paola Gallardo Apr 2015

A Corpus For Investigating English-Language Learners' Dialog Behaviors, Nigel Ward, Paola Gallardo

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

We are interested in developing methods for the semi-automatic discovery of prosodic patterns in dialog and how they differ between languages and among populations. We are starting by examining how the prosody of Spanish-native learners of English differs from that of native speakers. To support this work, we have collected a new corpus of conversations among college students. This includes dialogs between a nonnative speaker of English and a native, dialogs between native speakers of English, and Spanish conversations.

Sometimes, It Is Beneficial To Process Different Types Of Uncertainty Separately, Chrysostomos D. Stylios, Andrzej Pownuk, Vladik Kreinovich Apr 2015

Sometimes, It Is Beneficial To Process Different Types Of Uncertainty Separately, Chrysostomos D. Stylios, Andrzej Pownuk, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situations, we make predictions based on the measured and/or estimated values of different physical quantities. The accuracy of these predictions depends on the accuracy of the corresponding measurements and expert estimates. Often, for each quantity, there are several different sources of inaccuracy. Usually, to estimate the prediction accuracy, we first combine, for each input, inaccuracies from different sources into a single expression, and then use these expressions to estimate the prediction accuracy. In this paper, we show that it is often more computationally efficient to process different types of uncertainty separately, i.e., to estimate inaccuracies in the …

Symbolic Aggregate Approximation (Sax) Under Interval Uncertainty, Chrysostomos D. Stylios, Vladik Kreinovich Apr 2015

Symbolic Aggregate Approximation (Sax) Under Interval Uncertainty, Chrysostomos D. Stylios, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situations, we monitor a system by continuously measuring the corresponding quantities, to make sure that an abnormal deviation is detected as early as possible. Often, we do not have ready algorithms to detect abnormality, so we need to use machine learning techniques. For these techniques to be efficient, we first need to compress the data. One of the most successful methods of data compression is the technique of Symbolic Aggregate approXimation (SAX). While this technique is motivated by measurement uncertainty, it does not explicitly take this uncertainty into account. In this paper, we show that we can …

How To Take Into Account Model Inaccuracy When Estimating The Uncertainty Of The Result Of Data Processing, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva, Andrzej Pownuk, Rodrigo A. Romero Apr 2015

How To Take Into Account Model Inaccuracy When Estimating The Uncertainty Of The Result Of Data Processing, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva, Andrzej Pownuk, Rodrigo A. Romero

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In engineering design, it is important to guarantee that the values of certain quantities such as stress level, noise level, vibration level, etc., stay below a certain threshold in all possible situations, i.e., for all possible combinations of the corresponding internal and external parameters. Usually, the number of possible combinations is so large that it is not possible to physically test the system for all these combinations. Instead, we form a computer model of the system, and test this model. In this testing, we need to take into account that the computer models are usually approximate. In this paper, we …

Building Conflict-Free Fft Schedules, Stephen Richardson, Dejan Markovic, Andrew Danowitz, John Brunhaver, Mark Horowitz Apr 2015

Building Conflict-Free Fft Schedules, Stephen Richardson, Dejan Markovic, Andrew Danowitz, John Brunhaver, Mark Horowitz

Computer Science and Software Engineering

A conflict-free schedule lets an FFT run to completion without ever having to pause for memory-conflict resolution. We show how to build such schedules for FFTs having any number of butterfly units B operating at any radix R, transforming any number of datapoints D. Our algorithm works for FFT datapaths with or without pipeline overlap, and for memory banks having any number of access ports. Specifically, it enables construction of conflict-free schedules using single-ported memory banks, which require less area than more traditional multi-ported designs.

Measuring The Strength Of The Semantic Relationship Between Words, Lubomir Stanchev Apr 2015

Measuring The Strength Of The Semantic Relationship Between Words, Lubomir Stanchev

Computer Science and Software Engineering

We propose a novel way for extracting the strength of the semantic relationship between words from semi-structured sources, such as WordNet. Unlike existing approaches that only explore the structured information (e.g., the hypernym relationship in WordNet), we present a framework that allows us to utilize all available information, including natural text descriptions. Our approach constructs a similarity graph that stores the strength of the semantic relationship between words. Specifically, an edge between two words describes the probability that someone who is interested in resources about the first word will be also interested in resources about the second word. Note that …

A Novel Root Based Arabic Stemmer, Mohammed N. Al-Kabi, Saif A. Kazakzeh, Belal M. Abu Ata, Saif A. Al-Rababah, Izzat M. Alsmadi

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Stemming algorithms are used in information retrieval systems, indexers, text mining, text classifiers etc., to extract stems or roots of different words, so that words derived from the same stem or root are grouped together. Many stemming algorithms were built in different natural languages. Khoja stemmer is one of the known and widely used Arabic stemmers. In this paper, we introduced a new light and heavy Arabic stemmer. This new stemmer is presented in this study and compared with two well-known Arabic stemmers. Results showed that accuracy of our stemmer is slightly better than the accuracy yielded by each one …

Privacy-Aware Access Control For Message Exchange In Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks, Sushama Karumanchi, Anna Squicciarini, Dan Lin Apr 2015

Privacy-Aware Access Control For Message Exchange In Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks, Sushama Karumanchi, Anna Squicciarini, Dan Lin

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Vehicular ad hoc networks are a promising and increasingly important paradigm. Their applications range from safety enhancement to mobile entertainment services. However, their deployment requires several security issues to be resolved, particularly, since they rely on insecure wireless communication. In this paper, we propose a cryptographic-based access control framework for vehicles to securely exchange messages in a controlled fashion by integrating moving object modeling techniques with cryptographic policies. To our knowledge, this is the first time a comprehensive framework for access control in VANETs is proposed.

Architectural Techniques To Extend Multi-Core Performance Scaling, Hamza Bin Sohail Apr 2015

Architectural Techniques To Extend Multi-Core Performance Scaling, Hamza Bin Sohail

Open Access Dissertations

Multi-cores have successfully delivered performance improvements over the past decade; however, they now face problems on two fronts: power and off-chip memory bandwidth. Dennard's scaling is effectively coming to an end which has lead to a gradual increase in chip power dissipation. In addition, sustaining off-chip memory bandwidth has become harder due to the limited space for pins on the die and greater current needed to drive the increasing load . My thesis focuses on techniques to address the power and off-chip memory bandwidth challenges in order to avoid the premature end of the multi-core era. ^ In the first …

Why Some Families Of Probability Distributions Are Practically Efficient: A Symmetry-Based Explanation, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva, Hung T. Nguyen, Songsak Sriboonchitta Apr 2015

Why Some Families Of Probability Distributions Are Practically Efficient: A Symmetry-Based Explanation, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva, Hung T. Nguyen, Songsak Sriboonchitta

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Out of many possible families of probability distributions, some families turned out to be most efficient in practical situations. Why these particular families and not others? To explain this empirical success, we formulate the general problem of selecting a distribution with the largest possible utility under appropriate constraints. We then show that if we select the utility functional and the constraints which are invariant under natural symmetries -- shift and scaling corresponding to changing the starting point and the measuring unit for describing the corresponding quantity $x$. then the resulting optimal families of probability distributions indeed include most of the …

Parallel Preconditioners For Finite Element Computations, Emily Furst Apr 2015

Parallel Preconditioners For Finite Element Computations, Emily Furst

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

This thesis sought to explore numerical methods for solving partial differential equations and to determine the best method of updating the deal.II software to utilize new Trilinos software packages. The one dimensional heat equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions and nonzero initial conditions was solved analytically, using the Forward in Time, Central in Space scheme of the finite difference method, and the Crank-Nicolson scheme of the finite element method. The solutions from using the finite difference method and the finite element method were then compared to the analytic solution to determine accuracy. An example using the same Trilinos packages that are …

Examining The Transitional Impact Of Icd-10 On Healthcare Fraud Detection, Tyler Olson Apr 2015

Examining The Transitional Impact Of Icd-10 On Healthcare Fraud Detection, Tyler Olson

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

On October 1st, 2015, the tenth revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) will be mandatorily implemented in the United States. Although this medical classification system will allow healthcare professionals to code with greater accuracy, specificity, and detail, these codes will have a significant impact on the flavor of healthcare insurance claims. While the overall benefit of ICD-10 throughout the healthcare industry is unquestionable, some experts believe healthcare fraud detection and prevention could experience an initial drop in performance due to the implementation of ICD-10. We aim to quantitatively test the validity of this concern regarding an adverse transitional …

Once We Know That A Polynomial Mapping Is Rectifiable, We Can Algorithmically Find A Rectification, Julio Urenda, David Finston, Vladik Kreinovich Apr 2015

Once We Know That A Polynomial Mapping Is Rectifiable, We Can Algorithmically Find A Rectification, Julio Urenda, David Finston, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

It is known that some polynomial mappings φ: Ck --> Cn are rectifiable in the sense that there exists a polynomial mapping α: Cn --> Cn whose inverse is also polynomial and for which α(φ(z1, ...,zk)) = (z1, ...,zk, 0, ..., 0) for all z1, ...,zk. In many cases, the existence of such a rectification is proven indirectly, without an explicit construction of the mapping α.

In this paper, we use Tarski-Seidenberg algorithm (for deciding the first order theory of real numbers) to design …

When Can We Simplify Data Processing: An Algorithmic Answer, Julio Urenda, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Berlin Wu Apr 2015

When Can We Simplify Data Processing: An Algorithmic Answer, Julio Urenda, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Berlin Wu

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many real-life situations, we are interested in the values of physical quantities x1, ..., xn which are difficult (or even impossible) to measure directly. To estimate these values, we measure easier-to-measure quantities y1, ..., ym which are related to the desired quantities by a known relation, and use these measurement results to estimate xi. The corresponding data processing algorithms are sometimes very complex and time-consuming, so a natural question is: are simpler (and, thus, faster) algorithms possible for solving this data processing problem? In this paper, we show that by using …

Sensitivity Of Mixed Models To Computational Algorithms Of Time Series Data, Gunaime Nevine Apr 2015

Sensitivity Of Mixed Models To Computational Algorithms Of Time Series Data, Gunaime Nevine

Doctoral Dissertations

Statistical analysis is influenced by implementation of the algorithms used to execute the computations associated with various statistical techniques. Over many years; very important criteria for model comparison has been studied and examined, and two algorithms on a single dataset have been performed numerous times. The goal of this research is not comparing two or more models on one dataset, but comparing models with numerical algorithms that have been used to solve them on the same dataset.

In this research, different models have been broadly applied in modeling and their contrasting which are affected by the numerical algorithms in different …

An Extensible Technology Framework For Cyber Security Education, Frank Jordan Sheen Apr 2015

An Extensible Technology Framework For Cyber Security Education, Frank Jordan Sheen

Theses and Dissertations

Cyber security education has evolved over the last decade to include new methods of teaching and technology to prepare students. Instructors in this field of study often deal with a subject matter that has rigid principles, but changing ways of applying those principles. This makes maintaining courses difficult. This case study explored the kind of teaching methods, technology, and means used to explain these concepts. This study shows that generally, cyber security courses require more time to keep up to date. It also evaluates one effort, the NxSecLab, on how it attempted to relieve the administrative issues in teaching these …

Authentication Melee: A Usability Analysis Of Seven Web Authentication Systems, Scott Ruoti Apr 2015

Authentication Melee: A Usability Analysis Of Seven Web Authentication Systems, Scott Ruoti

Theses and Dissertations

Passwords continue to dominate the authentication landscape in spite of numerous proposals to replace them. Even though usability is a key factor in replacing passwords, very few alternatives have been subjected to formal usability studies and even fewer have been analyzed using a standard metric. We report the results of four within-subjects usability studies for seven web authentication systems. These systems span federated, smartphone, paper tokens, and email-based approaches. Our results indicate that participants prefer single sign-on systems. We utilize the Systems Usability Scale (SUS) as a standard metric for empirical analysis and find that it produces reliable, replicable results. …

Immunology Inspired Detection Of Data Theft From Autonomous Network Activity, Theodore O. Cochran Apr 2015

Immunology Inspired Detection Of Data Theft From Autonomous Network Activity, Theodore O. Cochran

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

The threat of data theft posed by self-propagating, remotely controlled bot malware is increasing. Cyber criminals are motivated to steal sensitive data, such as user names, passwords, account numbers, and credit card numbers, because these items can be parlayed into cash. For anonymity and economy of scale, bot networks have become the cyber criminal’s weapon of choice. In 2010 a single botnet included over one million compromised host computers, and one of the largest botnets in 2011 was specifically designed to harvest financial data from its victims. Unfortunately, current intrusion detection methods are unable to effectively detect data extraction techniques …

Recipe Suggestion Tool, Tejaswi Patha, Deepika Sandhadi

All Capstone Projects

There is currently a great need for a tool to search cooking recipes based on ingredients, country and recipe type. Current search engines do not provide this feature. Most of the recipe search results in current websites are not efficiently clustered based on relevance or categories resulting in a user getting lost in the huge search results presented. They also do not provide links to view images of the ingredients of a recipe.

My project aims to combine the features like search based on ingredients, suggestions for similar recipes, and images for the ingredients under one search engine and provide …

Demand Bidding Program And Its Application In Hotel Energy Management, Manikanta Perumalla Apr 2015

Demand Bidding Program And Its Application In Hotel Energy Management, Manikanta Perumalla

All Capstone Projects

Demand bidding program (DBP) is recently adopted in practice by some energy operators. DBP is a risk-free demand response program targeting large energy consumers. In this paper, we consider DBP with the application in hotel energy management. For DBP, optimization problem is formulated with the objective of maximizing expected reward, which is received when the amount of energy saving satisfies the contract. For a general distribution of energy consumption, we give a general condition for the optimal bid and outline an algorithm to find the solution without numerical integration. Furthermore, for Gaussian distribution, we derive closed-form expressions of the optimal …
