Hierarchical Interest Graph From Tweets, Pavan Kapanipathi, Prateek Jain, Chitra Venkataramani, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Industry and researchers have identified numerous ways to monetize microblogs for personalization and recommendation. A common challenge across these different works is the identification of user interests. Although techniques have been developed to address this challenge, a flexible approach that spans multiple levels of granularity in user interests has not been forthcoming. In this work, we focus on exploiting hierarchical semantics of concepts to infer richer user interests expressed as a Hierarchical Interest Graph. To create such graphs, we utilize users' tweets to first ground potential user interests to structured background knowledge such as Wikipedia Category Graph. We then adapt …

Seismic Anisotropy And Subduction-Induced Mantle Fabrics Beneath The Arabian And Nubian Plates Adjacent To The Red Sea, Ahmed A. Elsheikh, Stephen S. Gao, Kelly H. Liu, Abdelnasser A. Mohamed, Youqiang Yu, Raafat E. Fat-Helbary Apr 2014

Seismic Anisotropy And Subduction-Induced Mantle Fabrics Beneath The Arabian And Nubian Plates Adjacent To The Red Sea, Ahmed A. Elsheikh, Stephen S. Gao, Kelly H. Liu, Abdelnasser A. Mohamed, Youqiang Yu, Raafat E. Fat-Helbary

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

For most continental areas, the mechanisms leading to mantle fabrics responsible for the observed anisotropy remain ambiguous, partially due to the lack of sufficient spatial coverage of reliable seismological observations. Here we report the first joint analysis of shear-wave splitting measurements obtained at stations on the Arabian and Nubian Plates adjacent to the Red Sea. More than 1100 pairs of high-quality splitting parameters show dominantly N-S fast orientations at all 47 stations and larger-than-normal splitting times beneath the Afro-Arabian Dome (AAD). The uniformly N-S fast orientations and large splitting times up to 1.5 s are inconsistent with significant contributions from …

Transparent Spectrum Co-Access In Cognitive Radio Networks, Jonathan Daniel Backens Apr 2014

Transparent Spectrum Co-Access In Cognitive Radio Networks, Jonathan Daniel Backens

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The licensed wireless spectrum is currently under-utilized by as much as 85%. Cognitive radio networks have been proposed to employ dynamic spectrum access to share this under-utilized spectrum between licensed primary user transmissions and unlicensed secondary user transmissions. Current secondary user opportunistic spectrum access methods, however, remain limited in their ability to provide enough incentive to convince primary users to share the licensed spectrum, and they rely on primary user absence to guarantee secondary user performance. These challenges are addressed by developing a Dynamic Spectrum Co-Access Architecture (DSCA) that allows secondary user transmissions to co-access transparently and concurrently with primary …

Automatic Objects Removal For Scene Completion, Jianjun Yang, Yin Wang, Honggang Wang, Kun Hua, Wei Wang, Ju Shen

Computer Science Faculty Publications

With the explosive growth of Web-based cameras and mobile devices, billions of photographs are uploaded to the Internet. We can trivially collect a huge number of photo streams for various goals, such as 3D scene reconstruction and other big data applications. However, this is not an easy task due to the fact the retrieved photos are neither aligned nor calibrated. Furthermore, with the occlusion of unexpected foreground objects like people, vehicles, it is even more challenging to find feature correspondences and reconstruct realistic scenes. In this paper, we propose a structure-based image completion algorithm for object removal that produces visually …

Software Architecture And Development For Controlling A Hubo Humanoid Robot, Manas Ajit Paldhe Apr 2014

Software Architecture And Development For Controlling A Hubo Humanoid Robot, Manas Ajit Paldhe

Open Access Theses

Due to their human-like structure, humanoid robots are capable of doing some complex tasks. Since a humanoid robot has a large number of actuators and sensors, controlling it is a difficult task. For various tasks like balancing, driving a car, and interacting with humans, real-time response of the robot is essential. Efficiently controlling a humanoid robot requires a software that guarantees real-time interface and control mechanism so that real-time response of the robot is possible. Addition- ally, to reduce the development effort and time, the software should be open-source, multi-lingual and should have high-level constructs inbuilt in it.

Currently Robot …

Analysis Of Eye Tracking Data Obtained By Customers’ Product Evaluations, Shweta Sanjay Sareen

Open Access Theses

Within the mechanical engineering discipline, product representational studies have been used to inform engineers on the suitability of their product designs for prospective customers. Mainly based in customers' oral responses, engineers would modify the product design accordingly. The incorporation of eye tracking data, in addition to the oral responses, in these product representational studies is a recent addition. This case study performs data analysis of a product representational study conducted by Reid, MacDonald and Du (2012), which considers the impact of 2D and 3D product representation on customer judgments with associated eye gaze patterns. The aim of this thesis is …

Moving Object Detection For Interception By A Humanoid Robot, Saltanat B. Tazhibayeva Apr 2014

Moving Object Detection For Interception By A Humanoid Robot, Saltanat B. Tazhibayeva

Open Access Theses

Interception of a moving object with an autonomous robot is an important problem in robotics. It has various application areas, such as in an industrial setting where products on a conveyor would be picked up by a robotic arm, in the military to halt intruders, in robotic soccer (where the robots try to get to the moving ball and try to block an opponent's attempt to pass the ball), and in other challenging situations. Interception, in and of itself, is a complex task that demands a system with target recognition capability, proper navigation and actuation toward the moving target. There …

Reliability Guided Resource Allocation For Large-Scale Supercomputing Systems, Shruti Umamaheshwaran Apr 2014

Reliability Guided Resource Allocation For Large-Scale Supercomputing Systems, Shruti Umamaheshwaran

Open Access Theses

In high performance computing systems, parallel applications request a large number of resources for long time periods. In this scenario, if a resource fails during the application runtime, it would cause all applications using this resource to fail. The probability of application failure is tied to the inherent reliability of resources used by the application. Our investigation of high performance computing systems operating in the field has revealed a significant difference in the measured operational reliability of individual computing nodes. By adding awareness of the individual system nodes' reliability to the scheduler along with the predicted reliability needs of parallel …

A Farm Management Information System With Task-Specific, Collaborative Mobile Apps And Cloud Storage Services, Jonathan Tyler Welte Apr 2014

A Farm Management Information System With Task-Specific, Collaborative Mobile Apps And Cloud Storage Services, Jonathan Tyler Welte

Open Access Theses

Modern production agriculture is beginning to advance beyond deterministic, scheduled operations between relatively few people to larger scale, information-driven efficiency in order to respond to the challenges of field variability and meet the needs of a growing population. Since no two farms are the same with respect to information and management structure, a specialized farm management information system (FMIS) which is tailored to the realities on the ground of individual farms is likely to be more effective than generalized FMIS available today.

This thesis presents the design of a FMIS using proven user-centered design principles. This approach resulted in the …

Woodification Of Polygonal Meshes, Gustavo Alejandro Guayaquiul Sosa Apr 2014

Woodification Of Polygonal Meshes, Gustavo Alejandro Guayaquiul Sosa

Open Access Theses

An evolving polygonal mesh based on stem's tree growth coupled with a physical simulation of bark's cracking is presented. This process is denominated woodification. Whereas previous approaches use a fixed resolution voxel grid, woodification is built on the deformable simplicial complex representation, which robustly simulates growth with adaptive subdivision. The approach allows any meshed object to be grown and textured. Features, such as interaction with obstacles, attributes interpolation, and sketching tools, are added to provide control during the woodifible process.

Problems in many areas give rise to computationally expensive integrals that beg the need of efficient techniques to solve them, e.g., in computational finance for the modeling of cash flows; for the computation of Feynman loop integrals in high energy physics; and in stochastic geometry with applications to computer graphics.

We demonstrate feasible numerical approaches in the framework of the PARINT multivariate integration package. The parallel environment is provided by the cluster of the High Performance Computational Science (HPCS) laboratory, with 22 (16- or 32-core) nodes, NVIDIA GPUs, and Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors.

Monte Carlo integration is implemented in CUDA …

Program Comprehension Of Aspect-Oriented Programs, Jeffrey Steenbock Apr 2014

Program Comprehension Of Aspect-Oriented Programs, Jeffrey Steenbock

Student Work

The aim of aspect-oriented development has been to address the issue of software reuse outside the domain of established object-oriented techniques within the challenging realm of similar cross-cutting concerns. By decoupling the concerns from the core functionality, aspect-oriented developed software results in a smaller code base and reduced code duplication. This decoupling though presents new challenges to the software development process. The process of separating concerns impacts the developers established engineering inclinations as well as existing, established notations, such as UML, that developers are familiar with utilizing for both designing and understanding the implemented software systems. This thesis will study …

In vitro and in vivo models are widely used in cancer research. Characterizing the similarities and differences between a patient's tumor and corresponding in vitro and in vivo models is important for understanding the potential clinical relevance of experimental data generated with these models. Towards this aim, we analyzed the genomic aberrations, DNA methylation and transcriptome profiles of five parental tumors and their matched in vitro isolated glioma stem cell (GSC) lines and xenografts generated from these same GSCs using high-resolution platforms. We observed that the methylation and transcriptome profiles of in vitro GSCs were significantly different from their corresponding …

3d Visualization Architecture For Building Applications Leveraging An Existing Validated Toolkit, David A. Polyak Apr 2014

3d Visualization Architecture For Building Applications Leveraging An Existing Validated Toolkit, David A. Polyak

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The diagnostic radiology space and healthcare in general is a slow adopter of new software technologies and patterns. Despite the widespread embrace of mobile technology in recent years, altering the manner in which societies in developed countries live and communicate, diagnostic radiology has not unanimously adopted mobile technology for remote diagnostic review. Desktop applications in the diagnostic radiology space commonly leverage a validated toolkit. Such toolkits not only simplify desktop application development but minimize the scope of application validation. For these reasons, such a toolkit is an important piece of a company’s software portfolio. This thesis investigated an approach for …

Computational Pain Quantification And The Effects Of Age, Gender, Culture And Cause, Colin R. Ostberg Apr 2014

Computational Pain Quantification And The Effects Of Age, Gender, Culture And Cause, Colin R. Ostberg

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Chronic pain affects more than 100 million Americans and more than 1.5 billion people worldwide. Pain is a multidimensional construct, expressed through a variety of means. Facial expressions are one such type of pain expression. Automatic facial expression recognition, and in particular pain expression recognition, are fields that have been studied extensively. However, nothing has explored the possibility of an automatic pain quantification algorithm, able to output pain levels based upon a facial image. Developed for a remote monitoring context, a computational pain quantification algorithm has been developed and validated by two distinct sets of data. The second set of …

Designing An Educational And Intelligent Human-Computer Interface For Older Adults, Drew W. Williams Apr 2014

Designing An Educational And Intelligent Human-Computer Interface For Older Adults, Drew W. Williams

Master's Theses (2009 -)

As computing devices continue to become more heavily integrated into our lives, proper design of human-computer interfaces becomes a more important topic of discussion. Efficient and useful human-computer interfaces need to take into account the abilities of the humans who will be using such interfaces, and adapt to difficulties that different users may face – such as the particular difficulties older users must face. However, various issues in the design of human-computer interfaces for older users yet exist: a wide variance of ability is displayed by older adults, which can be difficult to design for. Motions and notions found intuitive …

Ubiquitous Interoperable Emergency Response System, Matthew J. Passini Apr 2014

Ubiquitous Interoperable Emergency Response System, Matthew J. Passini

Master's Theses (2009 -)

In the United States, there is an emergency dispatch for fire department services more than once every second - 31,854,000 incidents in 2012. While large scale disasters present enormous response complexity, even the most common emergencies require a better way to communicate information between personnel. Through real-time location and status updates using integrated sensors, this system can significantly decrease emergency response times and improve the overall effectiveness of emergency responses. Aside from face-to-face communication, radio transmissions are the most common medium for transferring information during emergency incidents. However, this type of information sharing is riddled with issues that are nearly …

Parallelized Rigid Body Dynamics, John Calvin Linford Apr 2014

Parallelized Rigid Body Dynamics, John Calvin Linford

Master's Projects

Physics engines are collections of API-like software designed for video games, movies and scientific simulations. While physics engines often come in many shapes and designs, all engines can benefit from an increase in speed via parallelization. However, despite this need for increased speed, it is uncommon to encounter a parallelized physics engine today. Many engines are long-standing projects and changing them to support parallelization is too costly to consider as a practical matter. Parallelization needs to be considered from the design stages through completion to ensure adequate implementation. In this project we develop a realistic approach to simulate physics in …

Concept Based Semantic Search Engine, Pradeep Roy Apr 2014

Concept Based Semantic Search Engine, Pradeep Roy

Master's Projects

In the current day and age, search engines are the most relied on and critical ways to find out information on the World Wide Web (W3). With the ushering in of Big Data, traditional search engines are becoming inept and inadequate at dishing out relevant pages. It has become increasingly difficult to locate meaningful results from the mind boggling list of returns typical of returned search queries. Keywords, often times, alone cannot capture the intended concept with high precision. These and associated issues with the current search engines call for a more powerful and holistic search engine capability. The current …

Comparative Analysis Of Naive Bayes And Tree Augmented Naive Bayes Models, Harini Padmanaban Apr 2014

Comparative Analysis Of Naive Bayes And Tree Augmented Naive Bayes Models, Harini Padmanaban

Master's Projects

Naive Bayes and Tree Augmented Naive Bayes (TAN) are probabilistic graphical models used
for modeling huge datasets involving lots of uncertainties among its various interdependent
feature sets. Some of the most common applications of these models are image segmentation,
medical diagnosis and various other data clustering and data classification applications. A
classification problem deals with identifying to which category a particular instance belongs to,
based on previous knowledge acquired by analysis of various such instances. The instances are
described using a set of variables called attributes or features. A Naive Bayes model assumes that
all the attributes of an instance …

A Tunable Workflow Scheduling Algorithm Based On Particle Swarm Optimization For Cloud Computing, Kai Wu Apr 2014

A Tunable Workflow Scheduling Algorithm Based On Particle Swarm Optimization For Cloud Computing, Kai Wu

Master's Projects

Cloud computing provides a pool of virtualized computing resources and adopts pay-per-use model. Schedulers for cloud computing make decision on how to allocate tasks of workflow to those virtualized computing resources. In this report, I present a flexible particle swarm optimization (PSO) based scheduling algorithm to minimize both total cost and makespan. Experiment is conducted by varying computation of tasks, number of particles and weight values of cost and makespan in fitness function. The results show that the proposed algorithm achieves both low cost and makespan. In addition, it is adjustable according to different QoS constraints.

Analyzing Automatically Assessed Programming Assignments In Cs1/2, Kiruthika Sivaraman

Master's Projects

This project will focus on two main objectives. The first objective is to analyze Java programming solutions submitted by students and cluster or group them based on their similarities. This will help instructors in finding repeated and unique solutions. The second objective is to analyze the assignment submission pattern of students. The metrics such as the number of times a student submits an assignment online before deadline and the amount of time a student spends on an assignment are analyzed. This information could be useful to instructors in determining the complexity of assignments and student time management.

Hiding Behind The Clouds: Efficient, Privacy-Preserving Queries Via Cloud Proxies, Surabhi Gaur Apr 2014

Hiding Behind The Clouds: Efficient, Privacy-Preserving Queries Via Cloud Proxies, Surabhi Gaur

Master's Projects

This project proposes PriView, a privacy-preserving technique for querying third-party ser- vices from mobile devices. Classical private information retrieval (PIR) schemes are diffi- cult to deploy and use, since they require the target service to be replicated and modified. To avoid this problem, PriView utilizes a novel, proxy-mediated form of PIR, in which the client device fetches XORs of dummy query responses from each of two proxies and combines them to produce the required result. Unlike conventional PIR, PriView does not require the third-party service to be replicated or modified in any way. We evaluated a PriView implementation for the …

Cryptanalysis Of Homophonic Substitution-Transposition Cipher, Jeffrey Yi Apr 2014

Cryptanalysis Of Homophonic Substitution-Transposition Cipher, Jeffrey Yi

Master's Projects

Homophonic substitution ciphers employ a one-to-many key to encrypt plaintext. This is in contrast to a simple substitution cipher where a one-to-one mapping is used. The advantage of a homophonic substitution cipher is that it makes frequency analysis more difficult, due to a more even distribution of plaintext statistics. Classic transposition ciphers apply diffusion to the ciphertext by swapping the order of letters. Combined transposition-substitution ciphers can be more challenging to cryptanalyze than either cipher type separately. In this research, we propose a technique to break a combined simple substitution- column transposition cipher. We also consider the related problem of …

Backward Sequential Feature Elimination And Joining Algorithms In Machine Learning, Sanya Valsan Apr 2014

Backward Sequential Feature Elimination And Joining Algorithms In Machine Learning, Sanya Valsan

Master's Projects

The Naïve Bayes Model is a special case of Bayesian networks with strong independence assumptions. It is typically used for classification problems. The Naïve Bayes model is trained using the given data to estimate the parameters necessary for classification. This model of classification is very popular since it is simple yet efficient and accurate. While the Naïve Bayes model is considered accurate on most of the problem instances, there is a set of problems for which the Naïve Bayes does not give accurate results when compared to other classifiers such as the decision tree algorithms. One reason for it could …
