Gender And Ethnicity Classification Using Partial Face In Biometric Applications, Jamie Lyle
Gender And Ethnicity Classification Using Partial Face In Biometric Applications, Jamie Lyle
All Dissertations
As the number of biometric applications increases, the use of non-ideal information such as images which are not strictly controlled, images taken covertly, or images where the main interest is partially occluded, also increases. Face images are a specific example of this. In these non-ideal instances, other information, such as gender and ethnicity, can be determined to narrow the search space and/or improve the recognition results. Some research exists for gender classification using partial-face images, but there is little research involving ethnic classifications on such images. Few datasets have had the ethnic diversity needed and sufficient subjects for each ethnicity …

Data visualization systems provide the tools to reveal patterns and filter information, aiding the processes of insight and decision making. The purpose of this thesis is to develop and test a data visualization system, The General Purpose System for Multi-display Interactive Visualization (GPS-MIV). GPS-MIV …
Ranking Methods For Global Optimization Of Molecular Structures, John Norman Mcmeen Jr
Ranking Methods For Global Optimization Of Molecular Structures, John Norman Mcmeen Jr
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This work presents heuristics for searching large sets of molecular structures for low-energy, stable systems. The goal is to find the globally optimal structures in less time or by consuming less computational resources. The strategies intermittently evaluate and rank structures during molecular dynamics optimizations, culling possible weaker solutions from evaluations earlier, leaving better solutions to receive more simulation time. Although some imprecision was introduced from not allowing all structures to fully optimize before ranking, the strategies identify metrics that can be used to make these searches more efficient when computational resources are limited.
Extracting Interest Tags From Twitter User Biographies, Ying Ding, Jing Jiang
Extracting Interest Tags From Twitter User Biographies, Ying Ding, Jing Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Twitter, one of the most popular social media platforms, has been studied from different angles. One of the important sources of information in Twitter is users’ biographies, which are short self-introductions written by users in free form. Biographies often describe users’ background and interests. However, to the best of our knowledge, there has not been much work trying to extract information from Twitter biographies. In this work, we study how to extract information revealing users’ personal interests from Twitter biographies. A sequential labeling model is trained with automatically constructed labeled data. The popular patterns expressing user interests are extracted and …

A Secure Communication System For Early Childhood Collaboration System, Hao Kang
A Secure Communication System For Early Childhood Collaboration System, Hao Kang
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The Early Childhood collaboration System (ECCS) is a distributed health data system which provides coordinated, de-identified healthcare information to various types of data consumers. To satisfy this requirement, the ECCS needs a matcher that utilizes Personal Identifying Information (PII) to coordinate information from a wide range of data sources. Due to the sensitivity of PII, the ECCS also needs to guarantee that only matcher can access PII. This report describes a reusable subsystem, called Medical Records Secure Messaging (MRSecureMessaging), which utilizes a reliable cryptographic algorithm to encrypt PII and other confidential data so that matcher and data consumers cannot access …
Simulation, And Overload And Stability Analysis Of Continuous Time Sigma Delta Modulator, Kyung Kang
Simulation, And Overload And Stability Analysis Of Continuous Time Sigma Delta Modulator, Kyung Kang
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The ever increasing demand for faster and more powerful digital applications requires high speed, high resolution ADCs. Currently, sigma delta modulators ADCs are extensively used in broadband telecommunication systems because they are an effective solution for high data-rate wireless communication systems that require low power consumption, high speed, high resolution, and large signal bandwidths.
Because mixed-signal integrated circuits such as Continuous Time sigma delta modulators contain both analog and digital circuits, mixed signal circuits are not as simple to model and simulate as all discrete or all analog systems. In this dissertation, the delta transform is used to simulate CT …
A Function-To-Task Process Model For Adaptive Automation System Design, Jason M. Bindewald, Michael E. Miller, Gilbert L. Peterson
A Function-To-Task Process Model For Adaptive Automation System Design, Jason M. Bindewald, Michael E. Miller, Gilbert L. Peterson
Faculty Publications
Adaptive automation systems allow the user to complete a task seamlessly with a computer performing tasks at which the human operator struggles. Unlike traditional systems that allocate functions to either the human or the machine, adaptive automation varies the allocation of functions during system operation. Creating these systems requires designers to consider issues not present during static system development. To assist in adaptive automation system design, this paper presents the concept of inherent tasks and takes advantage of this concept to create the function-to-task design process model. This process model helps the designer determine how to allocate functions to the …
Mathematical Modeling For Partial Object Detection., Ahmed Reda Amin El-Barkouky
Mathematical Modeling For Partial Object Detection., Ahmed Reda Amin El-Barkouky
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
From a computer vision point of view, the image is a scene consisting of objects of interest and a background represented by everything else in the image. The relations and interactions among these objects are the key factors for scene understanding. In this dissertation, a mathematical model is designed for the detection of partially occluded faces captured in unconstrained real life conditions. The proposed model novelty comes from explicitly considering certain objects that are common to occlude faces and embedding them in the face model. This enables the detection of faces in difficult settings and provides more information to subsequent …

Fresh Bytes - Connected Hydroponics For Small-Scale Growing, Jack Bowen
Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies
Many users are now transitioning to small-scale hydroponics and aquaponics at home. There can be a barrier to entry with these systems as there is a delicate balance of chemicals, pH, etc. that must be maintained. There are sensors for these various components but they are either aimed at commercial production or are un-automated. Fresh Bytes is a microcomputer with sensors to detect all of these unseen components in a hydroponic system. A prototype of this microcomputer is produced along with CAD plans for more professional versions of it. The sensors are verified and future development is contemplated.

Computer Science Faculty Publications
Cryogenic autolysis is a typical phenomenon of abnormal metabolism in Volvariella volvacea. Recent studies have identified 20 significantly upregulated genes via high-throughput sequencing of the mRNAs expressed in the mycelia of V. volvacea after cold exposure. Among these significantly upregulated genes, 15 annotated genes were used for functional annotation cluster analysis. Our results showed that the cyclin-like F-box domain (FBDC) formed the functional cluster with the lowest P-value. We also observed a significant expansion of FBDC families in V. volvacea. Among these, the FBDC3 family displayed the maximal gene expansion in V. volvacea. Gene expression profiling analysis revealed …

Design With Emotion: Improving Web Search Experience For Older Adults, Tamirat Abegaz
Design With Emotion: Improving Web Search Experience For Older Adults, Tamirat Abegaz
All Dissertations
Research indicates that older adults search for information all together about 15% less than younger adults prior to making decisions. Prior research findings associated such behavior mainly with age-related cognitive difficulties. However, recent studies indicate that emotion is linked to influence search decision quality. This research approaches questions about why older adults search less and how this search behavior could be improved. The research is motivated by the broader issues of older users' search behavior, while focusing on the emotional usability of search engine user interfaces. Therefore, this research attempts to accomplish the following three objectives: a) to explore the …

Is The Smartphone Smart In Kathmandu?, Seth Bird
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This is the extensive study of the smartphone in the developing country of Nepal, specifically the Kathmandu valley. Throughout my research I conducted various interviews with businesses, Tibetan refugees, and Nepali millennials (18yrs-33yrs) with the goal of identifying how the smartphone is used and understood. I chose the Kathmandu valley as my main area of research because the usage of smartphones in rural Nepal is extremely limited, and the valley represents the economic hub where progressive thinking flourishes. As a main objective I sought to understand how, if at all, the smartphone is used differently between Nepal and America. All …
Designing A Biomimetic Testing Platform For Actuators In A Series-Elastic Co-Contraction System, Ryan Tyler Schroeder
Designing A Biomimetic Testing Platform For Actuators In A Series-Elastic Co-Contraction System, Ryan Tyler Schroeder
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Actuators determine the performance of robotic systems at the most intimate of levels. As a result, much work has been done to assess the performance of different actuator systems. However, biomimetics has not previously been utilized as a pretext for tuning a series elastic actuator system with the purpose of designing an empirical testing platform. Thus, an artificial muscle tendon system has been developed in order to assess the performance of two distinct actuator types: (1) direct current electromagnetic motors and (2) ultrasonic rotary piezoelectric motors. Because the design of the system takes advantage of biomimetic operating principles such as …
Spectral Decomposition Of The Scattered Light Due To Deposits On The Solar Panel Surface, And Cross Correlated To Power Loss, Suzanna Ho
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The electric energy generated by solar panels declines due to dust particulates, bird deposits, water spots, and other contaminants that inhibit sunlight absorption and promote light scattering. As part of our research, we use cameras to capture images of solar panels, and analyze the images to detect the amount of scattered light. The more scattered light there is, the less light there is to penetrate the solar panel glass and reach the part of the panel that converts incident light to electric energy; therefore, less energy is generated. In this paper, we discuss the classification algorithm we developed to classify …
Concurrent Localized Wait-Free Operations On A Red Black Tree, Vitaliy Kubushyn
Concurrent Localized Wait-Free Operations On A Red Black Tree, Vitaliy Kubushyn
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
A red-black tree is a type of self-balancing binary search tree. Some wait-free algorithms have been proposed for concurrently accessing and modifying a red-black tree from multiple threads in shared memory systems. Most algorithms presented utilize the concept of a "window", and are entirely top-down implementations. Top-down algorithms like these have to operate on large portions of the tree, and operations on nodes that would otherwise not overlap at all still have to compete with and help one another.
A wait-free framework is proposed for obtaining ownership of small portions of the tree at a time in a bottom-up manner. …

Consider a 32-bit ripple adder. The delay on this device will be 32N where N is the delay for each adder to complete its operation. The delay of this process is due to the need to propagate …
Data Transport System, Rahav Dor
Data Transport System, Rahav Dor
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
To facilitate the WU Smart Home research [21] we built a system that collects data from sensors and uploads the data to the cloud. The system supports data collection from multiple locations (typically apartments) that are independent from each other, endowing the system with two benefit: distributed data collection and alleviating privacy concerns. Each location is managed by a local micro-server (μServer) that is responsible for receiving data packets from sensors and managing their transient storage. Periodically the μServer triggers a data transport process that moves the data to a cloud server where it is stored in a centralized database. …
A Pareto-Frontier Analysis Of Performance Trends For Small Regional Coverage Leo Constellation Systems, Christopher Alan Hinds
A Pareto-Frontier Analysis Of Performance Trends For Small Regional Coverage Leo Constellation Systems, Christopher Alan Hinds
Master's Theses
As satellites become smaller, cheaper, and quicker to manufacture, constellation systems will be an increasingly attractive means of meeting mission objectives. Optimizing satellite constellation geometries is therefore a topic of considerable interest. As constellation systems become more achievable, providing coverage to specific regions of the Earth will become more common place. Small countries or companies that are currently unable to afford large and expensive constellation systems will now, or in the near future, be able to afford their own constellation systems to meet their individual requirements for small coverage regions.
The focus of this thesis was to optimize constellation geometries …
Modeling The Evolution Of Generativity And The Emergence Of Digital Ecosystems, C. Jason Woodard, Eric K. Clemons
Modeling The Evolution Of Generativity And The Emergence Of Digital Ecosystems, C. Jason Woodard, Eric K. Clemons
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recent literature on sociotechnical systems has employed the concept of generativity to explain the remarkable capacity for digital artifacts to support decentralized innovation and the emergence of rich business ecosystems. In this paper, we propose agent-based computational modeling as a tool for studying the evolution of generativity, and offer a set of building blocks for constructing agent-based models in which generativity evolves. We describe a series of models that we have created using these building blocks, and summarize the results of our computational experiments to date. We find in several different settings that key features of generative systems can themselves …
Probabilistic Latent Document Network Embedding, Tuan M. V. Le, Hady W. Lauw
Probabilistic Latent Document Network Embedding, Tuan M. V. Le, Hady W. Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A document network refers to a data type that can be represented as a graph of vertices, where each vertex is associated with a text document. Examples of such a data type include hyperlinked Web pages, academic publications with citations, and user profiles in social networks. Such data have very high-dimensional representations, in terms of text as well as network connectivity. In this paper, we study the problem of embedding, or finding a low-dimensional representation of a document network that "preserves" the data as much as possible. These embedded representations are useful for various applications driven by dimensionality reduction, such …
Detecting Flow Anomalies In Distributed Systems, Freddy Chong-Tat Chua, Ee Peng Lim, Bernardo Huberman
Detecting Flow Anomalies In Distributed Systems, Freddy Chong-Tat Chua, Ee Peng Lim, Bernardo Huberman
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Deep within the networks of distributed systems, one often finds anomalies that affect their efficiency and performance. These anomalies are difficult to detect because the distributed systems may not have sufficient sensors to monitor the flow of traffic within the interconnected nodes of the networks. Without early detection and making corrections, these anomalies may aggravate over time and could possibly cause disastrous outcomes in the system in the unforeseeable future. Using only coarse-grained information from the two end points of network flows, we propose a network transmission model and a localization algorithm, to detect the location of anomalies and rank …

Mydeal: A Mobile Shopping Assistant Matching User Preferences To Promotions, Kartik Muralidharan, Swapna Gottipati, Jing Jiang, Narayan Ramasubbu, Rajesh Krishna Balan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A common problem in large urban cities is the huge number of retail options available. In response, a number of shopping assistance applications have been created for mobile phones. However, these applications mostly allow users to know where stores are or find promotions on specific items. What is missing is a system that factors in a user's shopping preferences and automatically tells them which stores are of their interest. The key challenge in this system is twofold; 1) building a matching algorithm that can combine user preferences with fairly unstructured deals and store information to generate a final rank ordered …

Issues Of Social Data Analytics With A New Method For Sentiment Analysis Of Social Media Data, Zhaoxia Wang, Victor J. C. Tong, David Chan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Social media data consists of feedback, critiques and other comments that are posted online by internet users. Collectively, these comments may reflect sentiments that are sometimes not captured in traditional data collection methods such as administering a survey questionnaire. Thus, social media data offers a rich source of information, which can be adequately analyzed and understood. In this paper, we survey the extant research literature on sentiment analysis and discuss various limitations of the existing analytical methods. A major limitation in the large majority of existing research is the exclusive focus on social media data in the English language. There …
