Design Of A Custom Software Application To Monitor And Communicate Cnc Machining Process Information To Aid In Chatter Identification, Valerie Pezzullo May 2014

Design Of A Custom Software Application To Monitor And Communicate Cnc Machining Process Information To Aid In Chatter Identification, Valerie Pezzullo

All Theses

In any manufacturing environment, it is important to be able to monitor the Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining process so that high quality parts can be produced in the least amount of time in order to be profitable. This involves acquiring the proper parameters needed from the machine's controller, which can prove to be difficult with proprietary machine tools that tend to limit access to the internal data collected by the controller. This closed approach to controller design also means that many technological advances that have recently become prevalent in society are not being adopted in the manufacturing industry, preventing …

Efficient Control Of Assets In A Modern Production Pipeline, Timothy Curtis May 2014

Efficient Control Of Assets In A Modern Production Pipeline, Timothy Curtis

All Theses

Managing large collections of assets created in today's CG productions is no easy task. This thesis examines basic production hierarchies and identifies problems that arise without proper workflow and asset control. The possibility of hundreds of assets being created in several workflows each week creates the potential for extraordinary time waste and user error without a system to track and manage the files being produced. It is becoming increasingly necessary to utilize methods during production that enforce naming and storage standards to prevent catastrophic data loss. This thesis presents an implementation of a customized database used to track all of …

A Customer Data Acquisition Application For Android, Richard William Preece May 2014

A Customer Data Acquisition Application For Android, Richard William Preece

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

This report discusses the development process and walkthrough of an application that is intended to aid businesses with two issues that they face on a consistent basis: customer data acquisition and eliminating expiring inventory.

This can help to use inventory that would otherwise go to waste, as well as increase customer engagement by providing incentives to become a repeat customer.

Regionalization Of An Asset Storage And Distribution Service, Cameron Dunn, Nathaniel Morrison May 2014

Regionalization Of An Asset Storage And Distribution Service, Cameron Dunn, Nathaniel Morrison

Computer Engineering

The existing service we work on, Asset Services, is comprised of multiple independent services which work together to provide an easy interface for internal clients to allow end users to upload their own content, and then distribute that content to both internal and external clients, with a firewall between the service and most external clients. Although Asset Services handles millions of requests a day from all over the globe, all requests and data were sent through a single data center. The objective of this project was to create new endpoints for end users to upload and download assets to/from. By …

Advances In Decision Tools For Ranking Analytics, Steven Cole Elliott May 2014

Advances In Decision Tools For Ranking Analytics, Steven Cole Elliott

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The goal in creating a user interface was to provide a means for initializing CMS+ and executing it without having to edit lines of code, as well as for presenting the ranking output in an aesthetically pleasing and familiar layout. As far as basic functionality was concerned, the user interface would allow a user to upload a file containing the various statistics of every team for that season, view that uploaded file, set the values of the different parameters to be used in the actual algorithm, execute the algorithm in order to generate a unique ranking, and finally to view …

Corl8: A System For Analyzing Diagnostic Measures In Wireless Sensor Networks, Loren Klingman May 2014

Corl8: A System For Analyzing Diagnostic Measures In Wireless Sensor Networks, Loren Klingman

All Theses

Due to an increasing demand to monitor the physical world, researchers are deploying wireless sensor networks more than ever before. These networks comprise a large number of sensors integrated with small, low-power wireless transceivers used to transmit data to a central processing and storage location. These devices are often deployed in harsh, volatile locations, which increases their failure rate and decreases the rate at which packets can be successfully transmitted. Existing sensor debugging tools, such as Sympathy and EmStar, rely on add-in network protocols to report status information, and to collectively diagnose network problems. Some protocols rely on a central …

Lighting And Compositing For Project Hero, Brooke Buckley May 2014

Lighting And Compositing For Project Hero, Brooke Buckley

All Theses

With tragedies such as the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary on the rise in the last few years, brainstorming ideas that would prevent that type of violence in schools has become necessary. One such scenario involves a teleoperated robot, manned by local police, which would track down and subdue an intruder until police could arrive at the location. This thesis follows the process of creating a computer-generated robot and compositing it seamlessly into a real environment for the production, Project Hero. This project is a short film that shows a scenario in which a robot would be used to subdue …

Persistent Community Detection In Dynamic Social Networks, Siyuan Liu, Shuhui Wang, Ramayya Krishnan May 2014

Persistent Community Detection In Dynamic Social Networks, Siyuan Liu, Shuhui Wang, Ramayya Krishnan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

While community detection is an active area of research in social network analysis, little effort has been devoted to community detection using time-evolving social network data. We propose an algorithm, Persistent Community Detection (PCD), to identify those communities that exhibit persistent behavior over time, for usage in such settings. Our motivation is to distinguish between steady-state network activity, and impermanent behavior such as cascades caused by a noteworthy event. The results of extensive empirical experiments on real-life big social networks data show that our algorithm performs much better than a set of baseline methods, including two alternative models and the …

Zebra: Zero-Effort Bilateral Recurring Authentication (Companion Report), Shrirang Mare, Andres Molina-Markham, Cory Cornelius, Ronald Peterson, David Kotz

Computer Science Technical Reports

We describe and evaluate Zero-Effort Bilateral Recurring Authentication (ZEBRA) in our paper that appears in IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy, May 2014. In this report we provide a more detailed comparative evaluation of ZEBRA against other related authentication schemes. The abstract of the paper follows. Common authentication methods based on passwords, tokens, or fingerprints perform one-time authentication and rely on users to log out from the computer terminal when they leave. Users often do not log out, however, which is a security risk. The most common solution, inactivity timeouts, inevitably fail security (too long a timeout) or usability (too …

Dynamic Estimation Of Rater Reliability Using Multi-Armed Bandits, Alexey Tarasov May 2014

Dynamic Estimation Of Rater Reliability Using Multi-Armed Bandits, Alexey Tarasov

Doctoral

One of the critical success factors for supervised machine learning is the quality of target values, or predictions, associated with training instances. Predictions can be discrete labels (such as a binary variable specifying whether a blog post is positive or negative) or continuous ratings (for instance, how boring a video is on a 10-point scale). In some areas, predictions are readily available, while in others, the eort of human workers has to be involved. For instance, in the task of emotion recognition from speech, a large corpus of speech recordings is usually available, and humans denote which emotions are present …

The SWS measurements were obtained by minimizing the energy on the transverse component of the PKS, SKKS, and SKS phases. Each of the individual measurements was visually checked to ensure quality. This version of the database contains 16,105 pairs of splitting parameters. The data used to generate the parameters were recorded by 1774 digital broadband seismic stations over the period of 1989-2012, and represented all the available data …

A Framework For Constructing Serious Games, Taylor Glen Yust May 2014

A Framework For Constructing Serious Games, Taylor Glen Yust

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Communicating ideas and knowledge through serious games is a trend that is currently gaining in popularity. However, at present, there is a distinct lack of a game development methodology that takes a critical approach to transforming information into gameplay. This thesis presents a framework that can be followed to construct compelling serious games that are effective at transferring knowledge to the player. This is accomplished through an analysis of atomic knowledge items and their relationships to one another, followed by a meaningful and synergetic implementation of these ideas at a foundational mechanics level.

This thesis also describes the development of …

Efficient Ray Tracing For Mobile Devices, Rafael De Melo Aroxa May 2014

Efficient Ray Tracing For Mobile Devices, Rafael De Melo Aroxa

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The demand for mobile devices with higher graphics performance has increased substantially in the past few years. Most mobile applications that demand 3D graphics use commonly available frameworks, such as Unity and Unreal Engine. In mobile devices, these frameworks are built on top of OpenGL ES and use a graphics technique called rasterization, a simple concept that yields good performance without sacrificing graphic quality. However, rasterization cannot easily handle some physical phenomena of light (i.e. reflection and refraction). In order to support such effects, the graphics framework has to emulate them, thereby leading to suboptimal results in term of quality. …

Mobile Banking Security Using Gps And Ldpc Codes, Matthew Francis Moccaro May 2014

Mobile Banking Security Using Gps And Ldpc Codes, Matthew Francis Moccaro

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Mobile Banking is becoming a major part of our world's financial system. Being able to manage one's finances on a mobile device can provide services that can make users more productive. It can also serve as a means of financial freedom to those who are unable to access physical banking facilities due to distance, or other problems. However, with such freedom also comes the need for security. A person's financial information is one of the most targeted groups of information by attackers. To secure these mobile freedoms, this paper presents a system to secure mobile banking procedures using global positioning …

Elucidation And Improvement Of Algorithms For Mass Spectrometry Isotope Trace Detection, Robert Anthony Smith May 2014

Elucidation And Improvement Of Algorithms For Mass Spectrometry Isotope Trace Detection, Robert Anthony Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Mass spectrometry facilitates cutting edge advancements in many fields. Although instrumentation has advanced dramatically in the last 100 years, data processing algorithms have not kept pace. Without sensitive and accurate signal segmentation algorithms, the utility of mass spectrometry is limited. In this dissertation, we provide an overview and analysis of mass spectrometry data processing. A tutorial to ease the learning curve for those outside the field is provided. We draw attention to the lack of critical evaluation in the field and describe the resulting effects, including a glut of algorithm contributions of questionable novel contribution. To facilitate increased critical evaluation, …

Generating Combinatorial Objects- A New Perspective, Alexander Chizoma Nwala May 2014

Generating Combinatorial Objects- A New Perspective, Alexander Chizoma Nwala

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Combinatorics is the science of "possibilities." This definition, while not formal is a fair statement because all too often, in order to gain insight into the solution of many counting problems, we explore the possibilities. In some cases we seek to know how many options, while in other cases we seek to enumerate or list the options. Irrespective of the scenario, combinatorics plays a vital role today. In many instances such as exploring the options for choosing a new password for a combination lock, we employ combinatorics. In considering the possible license plate permutations for a state, or to see …

Probabilistic Shortest Time Queries Over Uncertain Road Networks, Yaqing Chen May 2014

Probabilistic Shortest Time Queries Over Uncertain Road Networks, Yaqing Chen

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

In many real applications such as location-based services (LBS), map utilities, trip planning, and transportation systems, it is very useful and important to provide query services over spatial road networks. Nowadays we can easily obtain rich traffic information such as the speeds of vehicles on roads. However, due to the inaccuracy of devices or integration in consistencies, the traffic data (i.e., speeds) are often imprecise and uncertain. In this paper, we model road networks by uncertain graphs, which contain edges that are associated with probabilistic velocities. We formalize the problem of probabilistic shortest time query, and we propose time bound …

Exponential Replication Of Patterns In The Signal Tile Assembly Model And Experimental Non-Deterministic Assembly Of Lines In The Probabilistic Tile Assembly Model, Alexandra B. Keenan May 2014

Exponential Replication Of Patterns In The Signal Tile Assembly Model And Experimental Non-Deterministic Assembly Of Lines In The Probabilistic Tile Assembly Model, Alexandra B. Keenan

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

We introduce the problem of self-replication of rectangular two-dimensional patterns in the practically motivated Signal Tile Assembly Model (STAM), which is an extension of the aTAM. In the first part of this thesis, we construct an exponential pattern replicator that replicates a two-dimensional input pattern over some fixed alphabet of size ϕ with O(ϕ) tile types, O(ϕ) unique glues, and a signal complexity of O(1). In the second part of this thesis, we use a non-deterministic model of tile assembly to significantly reduce the tile complexity of specified-length linear assemblies, which are a particularly important substructure for building more complicated …

Modflows: Methods For Studying And Managing Mesh Editing Workflows, Jonathan D. Denning May 2014

Modflows: Methods For Studying And Managing Mesh Editing Workflows, Jonathan D. Denning

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

At the heart of computer games and computer generated films lies 3D content creation. A student wanting to learn how to create and edit 3D meshes can quickly find thousands of videos explaining the workflow process. These videos are a popular medium due to a simple setup that minimally interrupts the artist’s workflow, but video recordings can be quite challenging to watch. Typical mesh editing sessions involve several hours of work and thousands of operations, which means the video recording can be too long to stay interesting if played back at real-time speed or lose too much information when sped …

Porting The Embedded Xinu Operating System To The Raspberry Pi, Eric Biggers May 2014

Porting The Embedded Xinu Operating System To The Raspberry Pi, Eric Biggers

Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Honors Projects

This thesis presents a port of a lightweight instructional operating system called Embedded Xinu to the Raspberry Pi. The Raspberry Pi, an inexpensive credit-card-sized computer, has attracted a large community of hobbyists, researchers, and educators since its release in 2012. However, the system-level software running on the Raspberry Pi has been restricted to two ends of a spectrum: complex modern operating systems such as Linux at one end, and very simple hobbyist operating systems or simple “bare-metal” programs at the other end. This project bridges this gap by porting the Embedded Xinu operating system to the Raspberry Pi. Although simple …

A Novel, Tag-Based File-System, Aaron Laursen May 2014

A Novel, Tag-Based File-System, Aaron Laursen

Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Honors Projects

For decades, computer use has largely focused on managing and manipulating files-- creating and consuming media, browsing the web, software development, and even, with such systems as UNIX and Plan$9$, direct device access can largely be reduced to locating, creating, reading, and writing files. To facilitate these operations, developers have created a vast assortment of file-systems, each presenting a unique framework underlying nearly everything people do with a computer.

For various reasons, these file-systems have historically represented only incremental improvements and alterations from their predecessors, leaving the basic design and interaction models relatively unchanged. Because of this, most common file-systems …

Variable Bounds Analysis Of A Climate Model Using Software Verification Techniques, Peter Revesz, Robert Woodward May 2014

Variable Bounds Analysis Of A Climate Model Using Software Verification Techniques, Peter Revesz, Robert Woodward

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Software verification techniques often use some approximation method that identifies the limits of the possible range of values that variables in a computer program can take during execution. Current climate models are complex computer programs that are typically iterated time-step by time-step to predict the next value of the climate-related variables. Because these iterative methods are necessarily computed only for a fixed number of iterations, they are unable to answer many long-range questions that may be posed regarding climate change, for example, whether there are natural fluctuations or whether a tipping point is reached after which there is no return …

A Quantitative Analysis Of Decision Process In Social Groups Using Human Trajectories, Truc Viet Le, Siyuan Liu, Hoong Chuin Lau, Ramayya Krishnan May 2014

A Quantitative Analysis Of Decision Process In Social Groups Using Human Trajectories, Truc Viet Le, Siyuan Liu, Hoong Chuin Lau, Ramayya Krishnan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A group's collective action is an outcome of the group's decision-making process, which may be reached by either averaging of the individual preferences or following the choices of certain members in the group. Our problem here is to decide which decision process the group has adopted given the data of the collective actions. We propose a generic statistical framework to infer the group's decision process from the spatio-temporal data of group trajectories, where each "trajectory" is a sequence of group actions. This is achieved by systematically comparing each agent type's influence on the group actions based on an array of …

Distributed Gui Testing Of Ios Applications With Hadoopunit, Krissada Dechokul May 2014

Distributed Gui Testing Of Ios Applications With Hadoopunit, Krissada Dechokul

Theses and Dissertations

Smartphones have become an important medium of communication for millions of people. They have come to expect high-quality mobile applications, which have increased the importance of software testing in modern software development. While software testing can ensure the quality of a system under test (SUT), it has suffered from lengthy execution time, especially for system-level GUI testing. In general, system-level GUI testing can be time-consuming because it requires walking through every user interface element and every possible variation that users could experience through the GUI of the application. In addition, this type of testing exercises the SUT from the outside …

What We Can And Cannot (Yet) Do With Functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy, Megan K. Strait, Matthias Scheutz May 2014

What We Can And Cannot (Yet) Do With Functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy, Megan K. Strait, Matthias Scheutz

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Functional near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a relatively new technique complimentary to EEG for the development of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). NIRS-based systems for detecting various cognitive and affective states such as mental and emotional stress have already been demonstrated in a range of adaptive human–computer interaction (HCI) applications. However, before NIRS-BCIs can be used reliably in realistic HCI settings, substantial challenges oncerning signal processing and modeling must be addressed. Although many of those challenges have been identified previously, the solutions to overcome them remain scant. In this paper, we first review what can be currently done with NIRS, specifically, NIRS-based …
