Permission Based Android Security: Issues And Countermeasures, Zheran Fang, Weili Han, Yingjiu Li Jun 2014

Permission Based Android Security: Issues And Countermeasures, Zheran Fang, Weili Han, Yingjiu Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Android security has been a hot spot recently in both academic research and public concerns due to numerous instances of security attacks and privacy leakage on Android platform. Android security has been built upon a permission based mechanism which restricts accesses of third-party Android applications to critical resources on an Android device. Such permission based mechanism is widely criticized for its coarse-grained control of application permissions and difficult management of permissions by developers, marketers, and end-users. In this paper, we investigate the arising issues in Android security, including coarse granularity of permissions, incompetent permission administration, insufficient permission documentation, over-claim of …

It's Not A Bug, It's A Feature: Does Misclassification Affect Bug Localization?, Pavneet Singh Kocchar, Tien-Duy B. Le, David Lo Jun 2014

It's Not A Bug, It's A Feature: Does Misclassification Affect Bug Localization?, Pavneet Singh Kocchar, Tien-Duy B. Le, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Bug localization refers to the task of automatically processing bug reports to locate source code files that are responsible for the bugs. Many bug localization techniques have been proposed in the literature. These techniques are often evaluated on issue reports that are marked as bugs by their reporters in issue tracking systems. However, recent findings by Herzig et al. find that a substantial number of issue reports marked as bugs, are not bugs but other kinds of issues like refactorings, request for enhancement, documentation changes, test case creation, and so on. Herzig et al. report that these misclassifications affect bug …

Optimal Performance Trade-Offs In Mac For Wireless Sensor Networks Powered By Heterogeneous Ambient Energy Harvesting, Jin Yunye, Hwee-Pink Tan Jun 2014

Optimal Performance Trade-Offs In Mac For Wireless Sensor Networks Powered By Heterogeneous Ambient Energy Harvesting, Jin Yunye, Hwee-Pink Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In wireless sensor networks powered by ambient energy harvesting (WSNs-HEAP), sensor nodes' energy harvesting rates are spatially heterogeneous and temporally variant, which impose difficulties for medium access control (MAC). In this paper, we first derive the necessary conditions under which channel utilization and fairness are optimal in a WSN-HEAP, respectively. Based on the analysis, we propose an earliest deadline first (EDF) polling MAC protocol, which regulates transmission sequence of the sensor nodes based on the spatially heterogeneous energy harvesting rates. It also mitigates temporal variations in energy harvesting rates by a prediction and update mechanism. Simulation results verify the performance …

Interactive Two-Sided Transparent Displays: Designing For Collaboration, Jiannan Li, Saul Greenberg, Ehud Sharlin, Joaquim Jorge Jun 2014

Interactive Two-Sided Transparent Displays: Designing For Collaboration, Jiannan Li, Saul Greenberg, Ehud Sharlin, Joaquim Jorge

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Transparent displays can serve as an important collaborative medium supporting face-to-face interactions over a shared visual work surface. Such displays enhance workspace awareness: when a person is working on one side of a transparent display, the person on the other side can see the other's body, hand gestures, gaze and what he or she is actually manipulating on the shared screen. Even so, we argue that designing such transparent displays must go beyond current offerings if it is to support collaboration. First, both sides of the display must accept interactive input, preferably by at least touch and / or pen, …

Constructive Visualization, Samuel Huron, Sheelagh Carpendale, Alice Thudt, Anthony Tang, Michael Mauerer Jun 2014

Constructive Visualization, Samuel Huron, Sheelagh Carpendale, Alice Thudt, Anthony Tang, Michael Mauerer

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

If visualization is to be democratized, we need to provide means for non-experts to create visualizations that allow them to engage directly with datasets. We present constructive visualization a new paradigm for the simple creation of flexible, dynamic visualizations. Constructive visualization is simple—in that the skills required to build and manipulate the visualizations are akin to kindergarten play; it is expressive— in that one can build within the constraints of the chosen environment, and it also supports dynamics — in that these constructed visualizations can be rebuilt and adjusted. We describe the conceptual components and processes underlying constructive visualization, and …

Joint Virtual Machine And Bandwidth Allocation In Software Defined Network (Sdn) And Cloud Computing Environments, Jonathan David Chase, Rakpong Kaewpuang, Wen Yonggang, Dusit Niyato Jun 2014

Joint Virtual Machine And Bandwidth Allocation In Software Defined Network (Sdn) And Cloud Computing Environments, Jonathan David Chase, Rakpong Kaewpuang, Wen Yonggang, Dusit Niyato

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Cloud computing provides users with great flexibility when provisioning resources, with cloud providers offering a choice of reservation and on-demand purchasing options. Reservation plans offer cheaper prices, but must be chosen in advance, and therefore must be appropriate to users' requirements. If demand is uncertain, the reservation plan may not be sufficient and on-demand resources have to be provisioned. Previous work focused on optimally placing virtual machines with cloud providers to minimize total cost. However, many applications require large amounts of network bandwidth. Therefore, considering only virtual machines offers an incomplete view of the system. Exploiting recent developments in software …

Fault Attacks On Hyperelliptic Curve Discrete Logarithm Problem Over Binary Field, Mingqiang Wang, Haiyang Xue, Tao Zhan Jun 2014

Fault Attacks On Hyperelliptic Curve Discrete Logarithm Problem Over Binary Field, Mingqiang Wang, Haiyang Xue, Tao Zhan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we present invalid-curve attacks that apply to the hyperelliptic curve scalar multiplication (HECSM) algorithm proposed by Avanzi et al. on the genus 2 hyperelliptic curve over binary field. We observe some new properties of the HECSM. Our attacks are based on these new properties and the observation that the parameters f 0 and f 1 of the hyperelliptic curve equation are not utilized for the HECSM. We show that with different “values” for curve parameters f 0, f 1, there exsit cryptographically weak groups in the Koblitz hyperelliptic curve. Also, we compute the theoretical probability of getting …

Information Systems User Competency: A Conceptual Foundation, B. Eschenbrenner, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Research has identified a variety of factors that influence people’s intentions to use IS and their degree of IS use. However, what has not been well understood are the characteristics of competent IS users who are proficient in using IS and are able to achieve quality IS usage. Considering that improving IS users’ abilities to more efficiently and effectively use IS has always been and remains a challenge, research that provides a comprehensive view of the characteristics associated with competent IS users is warranted. This paper addresses this research question by proposing a conceptual foundation for IS user competency. Based …

Institutional Boundaries And Trust Of Virtual Teams In Collaborative Design: An Experimental Study In A Virtual World Environment, Shu Z. Schiller, Brian Mennecke, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Andy Luse

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Members of virtual teams often collaborate within and across institutional boundaries. This research investigates the effects of boundary spanning conditions on the development of team trust and team satisfaction. Two hundred and eighty-two participants carried out a collaborative design task over several weeks in a virtual world, Second Life. Multigroup structural equation modeling was used to examine our research model, which compares individual level measurement between two boundary spanning team conditions. The results indicate that trusting beliefs have a positive impact on team trust, which in turn, influences team satisfaction. Further, we found that, compared to cross-boundary teams, within-boundary teams …

Procedural Music Generation And Adaptation Based On Game State, Timothey Andrew Adam Jun 2014

Procedural Music Generation And Adaptation Based On Game State, Timothey Andrew Adam

Master's Theses

Video game developers attempt to convey moods to emphasize their game's narrative. Events that occur within the game usually convey success or failure in some way meaningful to the story's progress. Ideally, when these events occur, the intended change in mood should be perceivable to the player. One way of doing so is to change the music. This requires musical tracks to represent many possible moods, states and game events. This can be very taxing on composers, and encoding the control flow (when to transition) of the tracks can prove to be tricky as well.

This thesis presents AUD.js, a …

Virtual Reality Engine Development, Varun Varahamurthy Jun 2014

Virtual Reality Engine Development, Varun Varahamurthy

Master's Theses

With the advent of modern graphics and computing hardware and cheaper sensor and display technologies, virtual reality is becoming increasingly popular in the fields of gaming, therapy, training and visualization. Earlier attempts at popularizing VR technology were plagued by issues of cost, portability and marketability to the general public. Modern screen technologies make it possible to produce cheap, light head-mounted displays (HMDs) like the Oculus Rift, and modern GPUs make it possible to create and deliver a seamless real-time 3D experience to the user. 3D sensing has found an application in virtual and augmented reality as well, allowing for a …

Defy: A Deniable File System For Flash Memory, Timothy M. Peters Jun 2014

Defy: A Deniable File System For Flash Memory, Timothy M. Peters

Master's Theses

While solutions for file system encryption can prevent an adversary from determining the contents of files, in situations where a user wishes to hide even the existence of data, encryption alone is not enough. Indeed, encryption may draw attention to those files, as they most likely contain information the user wishes to keep secret, and coercion can be a very strong motivator for the owner of an encrypted file system to surrender their secret key.

Herein we present DEFY, a deniable file system designed to work exclusively with solid-state drives, particularly those found in mobile devices. Solid-state drives have unique …

A Comparison Of Image Processing Techniques For Bird Detection, Elsa Reyes Jun 2014

A Comparison Of Image Processing Techniques For Bird Detection, Elsa Reyes

Master's Theses

Orchard fruits and vegetable crops are vulnerable to wild birds and animals. These wild birds and animals can cause critical damage to the produce. Traditional methods of scaring away birds such as scarecrows are not long-term solutions but short-term solutions. This is a huge problem especially near areas like San Luis Obispo where there are vineyards. Bird damage can be as high as 50% for grapes being grown in vineyards. The total estimated revenue lost annually in the 10 counties in California due to bird and rodent damage to 22 selected crops ranged from $168 million to $504 million (in …

Towards An Automated Weight Lifting Coach: Introducing Lift, Michael Andrew Lady

Master's Theses

The fitness device market is young and rapidly growing. More people than ever before take count of how many steps they walk, how many calories they burn, their heart rate over time, and even their quality of sleep. New, and as of yet, unreleased fitness devices have promised the next evolution of functionality with exercise technique analysis. These next generation of fitness devices have wrist and armband style form factors, which may not be optimal for barbell exercises such as back squat, bench press, and overhead press where a sensor on one arm may not provide the most relevant data …

Master's Theses

Desktops, laptops, smartphones, tablets, and the Kinect, oh my! With so many devices available to the average consumer, the limitations and pitfalls of each interface are becoming more apparent. Swimming in devices, users often have to stop and think about how to interact with each device to accomplish the current tasks at hand. The goal of this thesis is to minimize user cognitive effort in handling multiple devices by creating a context aware hybrid interface. The context aware system will be explored through the hybridization of gesture and touch interfaces using a multi-touch coffee table and the next-generation Microsoft Kinect. …

Walking Assistant – A Mobile Aid For The Visually-Impaired, Adin T. Miller Jun 2014

Walking Assistant – A Mobile Aid For The Visually-Impaired, Adin T. Miller

Master's Theses

The most common navigation aid visually-impaired people employ is a white cane, but, recently, technology has given rise to a varied set of sophisticated navigation aids. While these new aids can provide more assistance to a visually-impaired person than a white cane, they tend to be expensive due to a small market segment, which in turn can reduce their accessibility. In an effort to produce a technologically-advanced yet accessible navigation aid, an Android application is proposed that detects and notifies users about obstacles within their path through the use of a smartphone's camera. While the smartphone is mounted on a …

Predicting Music Genre Preferences Based On Online Comments, Andrew J. Sinclair Jun 2014

Predicting Music Genre Preferences Based On Online Comments, Andrew J. Sinclair

Master's Theses

Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT) states that individuals adapt to each other’s communicative behaviors. This adaptation is called “convergence.” In this work we explore the convergence of writing styles of users of the online music distribution plat- form SoundCloud.com. In order to evaluate our system we created a corpus of over 38,000 comments retrieved from SoundCloud in April 2014. The corpus represents comments from 8 distinct musical genres: Classical, Electronic, Hip Hop, Jazz, Country, Metal, Folk, and World. Our corpus contains: short comments, frequent misspellings, little sentence struc- ture, hashtags, emoticons, and URLs. We adapt techniques used by researchers analyzing other …

A Proof Of Concept For Crowdsourcing Color Perception Experiments, Ryan Nathaniel Mcleod Jun 2014

A Proof Of Concept For Crowdsourcing Color Perception Experiments, Ryan Nathaniel Mcleod

Master's Theses

Accurately quantifying the human perception of color is an unsolved prob- lem. There are dozens of numerical systems for quantifying colors and how we as humans perceive them, but as a whole, they are far from perfect. The ability to accurately measure color for reproduction and verification is critical to indus- tries that work with textiles, paints, food and beverages, displays, and media compression algorithms. Because the science of color deals with the body, mind, and the subjective study of perception, building models of color requires largely empirical data over pure analytical science. Much of this data is extremely dated, …

Smarticles: A Method For Identifying And Correcting Instability And Error Caused By Explicit Integration Techniques In Physically Based Simulations, Susan Aileen Marano Jun 2014

Smarticles: A Method For Identifying And Correcting Instability And Error Caused By Explicit Integration Techniques In Physically Based Simulations, Susan Aileen Marano

Master's Theses

Using an explicit integration method in physically based animations has many advantages including conceptual and computational simplicity, however, it re- quires small time steps to ensure low numerical instability. Simulations with large numbers of individually interacting components such as cloth, hair, and fluid models, are limited by the sections of particles most susceptible to error. This results in the need for smaller time steps than required for the majority of the system. These sections can be diverse and dynamic, quickly changing in size and location based on forces in the system. Identifying and handling these trou- blesome sections could allow …

User Identification And Authentication Using Multi-Modal Behavioral Biometrics, Kyle O. Bailey, James S. Okolica, Gilbert L. Peterson Jun 2014

User Identification And Authentication Using Multi-Modal Behavioral Biometrics, Kyle O. Bailey, James S. Okolica, Gilbert L. Peterson

Faculty Publications

Biometric computer authentication has an advantage over password and access card authentication in that it is based on something you are, which is not easily copied or stolen. One way of performing biometric computer authentication is to use behavioral tendencies associated with how a user interacts with the computer. However, behavioral biometric authentication accuracy rates are worse than more traditional authentication methods. This article presents a behavioral biometric system that fuses user data from keyboard, mouse, and Graphical User Interface (GUI) interactions. Combining the modalities results in a more accurate authentication decision based on a broader view of the user's …

Computational Methods For The Analysis Of Next Generation Sequencing Data, Wei Wang May 2014

Computational Methods For The Analysis Of Next Generation Sequencing Data, Wei Wang

Dissertations

Recently, next generation sequencing (NGS) technology has emerged as a powerful approach and dramatically transformed biomedical research in an unprecedented scale. NGS is expected to replace the traditional hybridization-based microarray technology because of its affordable cost and high digital resolution. Although NGS has significantly extended the ability to study the human genome and to better understand the biology of genomes, the new technology has required profound changes to the data analysis. There is a substantial need for computational methods that allow a convenient analysis of these overwhelmingly high-throughput data sets and address an increasing number of compelling biological questions which …

Visualization Support For Cognitive Sciences, Matt J. Marangoni, Thomas Wischgoll, Yue Zhou, Leslie M. Blaha, Ross Smith, Rhonda J. Vickery

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

The science of computer graphics and visualization is intertwined in many ways with Cognitive Sciences. On the one hand, computer graphics can lead to virtual environments in which a person is exposed to a virtual scenario. Typically, 3D-capable display technology combined with tracking systems, which are capable of identifying where the person is located at, are deployed to achieve maximal immersion in that the persons point of view is recreated in the virtual scenario. As a result, an impressive experience is created such that that person is navigating the virtual scenario as if it was real. On the other hand, …

Risk Prediction With Genomic Data, Bharati Jadhav May 2014

Risk Prediction With Genomic Data, Bharati Jadhav

Theses

Genome wide association study (GWAS) is widely used with various machine learning algorithms to predict disease risk. This thesis investigates this widely used approach of GWAS using Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) genotype data and a novel approach of disease risk prediction with whole exome sequencing data, namely Whole Exome Wide Association Study (WEWAS). It further applies a discriminating machine learning algorithm, namely a Support Vector Machine (SVM) with different Kernel functions. For this study, only SNPs generated using genotyping technology, which focuses more on common variants, are used initially for disease prediction. Later, the whole exome data generated using Next …

Garden Of Eden: Software Packages For The Generation And Rendering Of Visually Realistic Trees And Forests, William B. Jackson May 2014

Garden Of Eden: Software Packages For The Generation And Rendering Of Visually Realistic Trees And Forests, William B. Jackson

Computer Science Technical Reports

Garden of Eden is an exercise in procedural generation of lifelike worlds. It randomly generates a forest scene of realistically shaped and proportioned asymmetric trees on top of a simple topographical map. This map is then rendered in an HTML5 3D canvas, with support for user navigation. The end result of this project is a sort of game, though without any goal, narrative, or creative purpose. It is simply a static rendering of a natural environment, open for exploration, closed to manipulation, exploring how users find visual pleasure and meaning in virtual environments. The passive interaction of the user is …

Email is the most common and comparatively the most efficient means of exchanging information in today's world. However, given the widespread use of emails in all sectors, they have been the target of spammers since the beginning. Filtering spam emails has now led to critical actions such as forensic activities based on mining spam email. The data mine for spam emails at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is considered to be one of the most prominent resources for mining and identifying spam sources. It is a widely researched repository used by researchers from different global organizations. The usual process …

Investigative Techniques Of N-Way Vendor Agreement And Network Analysis Demonstrated With Fake Antivirus, Gary Warner, Mike Nagy, Kyle Jones, Kevin Mitchem May 2014

Investigative Techniques Of N-Way Vendor Agreement And Network Analysis Demonstrated With Fake Antivirus, Gary Warner, Mike Nagy, Kyle Jones, Kevin Mitchem

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Fake AntiVirus (FakeAV) malware experienced a resurgence in the fall of 2013 after falling out of favor after several high profile arrests. FakeAV presents two unique challenges to investigators. First, because each criminal organization running a FakeAV affiliate system regularly alters the appearance of their system, it is sometimes difficult to know whether an incoming criminal complaint or malware sample is related to one ring or the other. Secondly, because FakeAV is delivered in a “Pay Per Install” affiliate model, in addition to the ring-leaders of each major ring, there are many high-volume malware infection rings who are all using …

Work In Progress: An Architecture For Network Path Reconstruction Via Backtraced Ospf Lsdb Synchronization, Raymond A. Hansen May 2014

Work In Progress: An Architecture For Network Path Reconstruction Via Backtraced Ospf Lsdb Synchronization, Raymond A. Hansen

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

There has been extensive work in crime scene reconstruction of physical locations, and much is known in terms of digital forensics of computing devices. However, the network has remained a nebulous combination of entities that are largely ignored during an investigation due to the transient nature of the data that flows through the networks. This paper introduces an architecture for network path reconstruction using the network layer reachability information shared via OSPF Link State Advertisements and the routines and functions of OSPF::rt_sched() as applied to the construction of identical Link State Databases for all routers within an Area.

Application Of Toral Automorphisms To Preserve Confidentiality Principle In Video Live Streaming, Enrique García-Carbajal, Clara Cruz-Ramos, Mariko Nakano-Miyatake May 2014

Application Of Toral Automorphisms To Preserve Confidentiality Principle In Video Live Streaming, Enrique García-Carbajal, Clara Cruz-Ramos, Mariko Nakano-Miyatake

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Most of the Live Video Systems do not preserve the Confidentiality principle, and send all frames of the video without any protection, allowing an easy “man in the middle” attack. But when it does, it uses cryptographic techniques over streaming data or makes use of secure channel systems. This generates low frame rate and demands many processor resources. In fact native Live Video Streaming demands many resources of all System.

In this paper we propose a technique to preserve confidentiality in Video Live Streaming applying a confusing visual method making use of the Toral Automorphism Spatial Transformation over each frame. …
