Modeling And Development Of Human Interface For Pedestrian Simulator, Romesh Khaddar
Modeling And Development Of Human Interface For Pedestrian Simulator, Romesh Khaddar
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
According to Traveler opinion and perception survey of 2005, 107.4 million Americans use walking as regular mode of travel, which amounts to 51% of American population. In 2009, 4092 pedestrian fatalities have been reported nationwide with a fatality rate of 1.33 which totals 59,000 crashes. Also, pedestrians are over represented in crash data by accounting more than 12% of fatalities but on 10.9% of trips. This makes a perfect case for understanding the causes behind such statistics, calling for a continuous research on pedestrians walking behavior and their interactions with surroundings.
Current research in pedestrian simulation focuses on surveys and …
Gate Monte Carlo Simulations In A Cloud Computing Environment, Blake Austin Rowedder
Gate Monte Carlo Simulations In A Cloud Computing Environment, Blake Austin Rowedder
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The GEANT4-based GATE is a unique and powerful Monte Carlo (MC) platform, which provides a single code library allowing the simulation of specific medical physics applications, e.g. PET, SPECT, CT, radiotherapy, and hadron therapy. However, this rigorous yet flexible platform is used only sparingly in the clinic due to its lengthy calculation time. By accessing the powerful computational resources of a cloud computing environment, GATE's runtime can be significantly reduced to clinically feasible levels without the sizable investment of a local high performance cluster. This study investigated a reliable and efficient execution of GATE MC simulations using a commercial cloud …
Interpretable Machine Learning And Sparse Coding For Computer Vision, Will Landecker
Interpretable Machine Learning And Sparse Coding For Computer Vision, Will Landecker
Dissertations and Theses
Machine learning offers many powerful tools for prediction. One of these tools, the binary classifier, is often considered a black box. Although its predictions may be accurate, we might never know why the classifier made a particular prediction. In the first half of this dissertation, I review the state of the art of interpretable methods (methods for explaining why); after noting where the existing methods fall short, I propose a new method for a particular type of black box called additive networks. I offer a proof of trustworthiness for this new method (meaning a proof that my method does not …

Pathway Pioneer: Heterogeneous Server Architecture For Scientific Visualization And Pathway Search In Metabolic Network Using Informed Search, Vipul Kantilal Oswal
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
PathwayPioneer is a website to visualize the biological models. The complex metabolic models are hard to perceive when read through text format. It is even more difficult to understand the flow of network and different subsystem or pathways. PathwayPioneer organizes different subsystems into simple graphical representation. We simplify the complex network based on subsystem and compartment. Users can do computation (flux balance analysis) through the user interface and perceive the changed model visually. Our system is one of its kind to handle large model files with quick response time.
Biologists are often interested in knowing different alternative pathways targeting a …

Multi-Scale Modeling Of Microbial Defection In The Presence Of Antibiotics, Darshan Dilip Nahar
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Limited environmental resources push life into competition. In terms of microbes, we assume that the only goal is to grow and competition means to grow faster than the peers. Organisms tend to adapt to their environmental conditions and improve their efficiency in using the common resources to grow faster. While different organisms compete they engage into various social behaviors like cooperation to work together towards a common goal, e.g., production of public goods that benefits the entire population. Hence a part of the resources at hand is dedicated to participate in cooperative activities if the cost-to-benefit ratio is less than …

Deconstructing The Welch Equation Using P-Adic Methods, Abigail Mann, Adelyn Yeoh
Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)
The Welch map x -> gx-1+c is similar to the discrete exponential map x -> gx, which is used in many cryptographic applications including the ElGamal signature scheme. This paper analyzes the number of solutions to the Welch equation: gx-1+c = x (mod pe) where p is a prime, and looks at other patterns of the equation that could possibly exploited in a similar cryptographic system. Since the equation is modulo pe, where p is a prime number, p-adic methods of analysis are used in counting the number of solutions modulo p …

Using A Model Of Temporal Latency To Improve Supervisory Control Of Human-Robot Teams, Kyle Lee Blatter
Using A Model Of Temporal Latency To Improve Supervisory Control Of Human-Robot Teams, Kyle Lee Blatter
Theses and Dissertations
When humans and remote robots work together on a team, the robots always interact with a human supervisor, even if the interaction is limited to occasional reports. Distracting a human with robotic interactions doesn't pose a problem so long as the inclusion of robots increases the team's overall effectiveness. Unfortunately, increasing the supervisor's cognitive load may decrease the team's sustainable performance to the point where robotic agents are more a liability than an asset. Present approaches resolve this problem with adaptive autonomy, where a robot changes its level of autonomy based on the supervisor's cognitive load. This thesis proposes to …

Re-ranking was shown to have positive impact on the effectiveness for microblog search. Yet existing approaches mostly focused on using a single ranker to learn some better ranking function with respect to various relevance features. Given various available rank learners (such as learning to rank algorithms), in this work, we mainly study an orthogonal problem where multiple learned ranking models form an ensemble for re-ranking the retrieved tweets than just using a single ranking model in order to achieve higher search effectiveness. We explore the use of query-sensitive model selection and rank fusion methods based on the result lists produced …
Interpolating Beach Profile Data Using Linear And Non-Linear Functions, Lance Calloway Croft
Interpolating Beach Profile Data Using Linear And Non-Linear Functions, Lance Calloway Croft
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Beach and nearshore surveys are conducted in a variety of ways, the most commonly used being the level-and-transit method; because it is inexpensive, time conducive and highly accurate. Specifically, beach surveys are conducted to better understand cross-shore, long-shore sediment transport processes, as well as to quantify volume changes, which are used to evaluate beach performance. In this study, a section of the beach on Sand Key, FL was surveyed using rod-and-transit. In addition to the commonly used linear data analysis, a non-linear analysis was conducted using NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines).
Survey data was collected within a short time window …
Symbolic Analysis Of An Electric Vehicle Charging Protocol, Li Li, Jun Pang, Yang Liu, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong
Symbolic Analysis Of An Electric Vehicle Charging Protocol, Li Li, Jun Pang, Yang Liu, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we describe our analysis of a recently proposed electric vehicle charing protocol. The protocol builds on complex cryptographic primitives such as commitment, zeroknowledge proofs, BBS+ signature and etc. Moreover, interesting properties such as secrecy, authentication, anonymity, and location privacy are claimed on this protocol. It thus presents a challenge for formal verification, as no single existing tool for security protocol analysis support for all the required features. In our analysis, we employ and combine the strength of two stateof-the-art symbolic verifiers, Tamarin and ProVerif, to check all important properties of the protocol.

Clone detectors find similar code fragments (i.e., instances of code clones) and report large numbers of them for industrial systems. To maintain or manage code clones, developers often have to investigate differences of multiple cloned code fragments. However, existing program differencing techniques compare only two code fragments at a time. Developers then have to manually combine several pairwise differencing results. In this paper, we present an approach to automatically detecting differences across multiple clone instances. We have implemented our approach as an Eclipse plugin and evaluated its accuracy with three Java software systems. Our evaluation shows that our algorithm has precision …

Online Naturalization: Evolving Roles In Online Knowledge Production Communities, Jeremy David Foote
Open Access Theses
Web-based peer production communities, like Wikipedia and open source software, have created digital artifacts of growing cultural, financial, and technological importance. Understanding how and why people choose to join these communities, and why they eventually leave them, is therefore an important topic.
We take all of the edit data from six years of activity on the online genealogy wiki WeRelate, and create monthly snapshots of behavior and interaction networks for all 9,570 users who edited the site. We use machine learning to cluster these behavioral snapshots into four "behavioral roles". We identify one of these roles as being indicative of …

Construction Of Shear Wave Models By Applying Multi-Objective Optimization To Multiple Geophysical Data Sets, Lennox Thompson, Aaron A. Velasco, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
For this work, our main purpose is to obtain a better understanding of the Earth's tectonic processes in the Texas region, which requires us to analyze the Earth structure. We expand on a constrained optimization approach for a joint inversion least-squares (LSQ) algorithm to characterize a one-dimensional Earth's structure of Texas with the use of multiple geophysical data sets. We employed a joint inversion scheme using multiple geophysical datasets for the sole purpose of obtaining a three-dimensional velocity structure of Texas in order to identify an ancient rift system within Texas. In particular, we use data from the USArray, which …

What If We Only Have Approximate Stochastic Dominance?, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen, Songsak Sriboonchitta
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In many practical situations, we need to select one of the two alternatives, and we do not know the exact form of the user's utility function -- e.g., we only know that it is increasing. In this case, stochastic dominance result says that if the cumulative distribution function (cdf) corresponding to the first alternative is always smaller than or equal than the cdf corresponding to the second alternative, then the first alternative is better. This criterion works well in many practical situations, but often, we have situations when for most points, the first cdf is smaller but at some points, …

We investigate cases where an ontology expressed in a seemingly hard DL can be polynomially reduced to one in a simpler logic, while preserving reasoning outcomes for classification and fact entailment. Our transformations target the elimination of inverse roles, universal and existential restrictions, and in the best case allow us to rewrite the given ontology into one of the OWL 2 profiles. Even if an ontology cannot be fully rewritten into a profile, in many cases our transformations allow us to exploit further optimisation techniques. Moreover, the elimination of some out-of-profile axioms can improve the performance of modular reasoners, such …
Exploring Abstract Interfaces In System-On-Chip Integration, Andrew Danowitz
Exploring Abstract Interfaces In System-On-Chip Integration, Andrew Danowitz
Computer Science and Software Engineering
Modern mobile devices are marvels of computation. They can encode high defnition video, processing and compressing over 350MB/s of image data in real time. They have no trouble driving displays with as much resolution as a full laptop, and smartphone manufacturers boast of running games with "console quality" graphics. Mobile devices pack all of this computational power into a 12\ handheld package by integrating a number of specialized hardware accelerators (IP) along with conventional CPU and GPUs in a system on chip (SoC). Unfortunately, creating these specialized systems is becoming increasingly expensive. Since hardware accelerators come from a number of …

A Knowledge Discovery Approach For The Detection Of Power Grid State Variable Attacks, Nathan Wallace
Doctoral Dissertations
As the level of sophistication in power system technologies increases, the amount of system state parameters being recorded also increases. This data not only provides an opportunity for monitoring and diagnostics of a power system, but it also creates an environment wherein security can be maintained. Being able to extract relevant information from this pool of data is one of the key challenges still yet to be obtained in the smart grid. The potential exists for the creation of innovative power grid cybersecurity applications, which harness the information gained from advanced analytics. Such analytics can be based on the extraction …

On The Effects Of Competition Between Agent-Based Double Auction Markets, Kai Cai, Jinzhong Niu, Simon Parsons
Publications and Research
Real market institutions, stock and commodity exchanges for example, do not occur in isolation. The same stocks and commodities may be listed on multiple exchanges, and traders who want to deal in those goods have a choice of markets in which to trade. While there has been extensive research into agent-based trading in individual markets, there is little work on this kind of multiple market scenario. Our work seeks to address this imbalance, examining how standard economic measures, like allocative efficiency, are affected by the presence of multiple markets for the same good. We find that while dividing traders between …

Modeling Profile-Attribute Disclosure In Online Social Networks From A Game Theoretic Perspective, Jundong Chen
Doctoral Dissertations
Privacy settings are a crucial part of any online social network as users are confronted with determining which and how many profile attributes to disclose. Revealing more attributes increases users chances of finding friends and yet leaves users more vulnerable to dangers such as identity theft. In this dissertation, we consider the problem of finding the optimal strategy for the disclosure of user attributes in social networks from a game-theoretic perspective.
We model the privacy settings' dynamics of social networks with three game-theoretic approaches. In a two-user game, each user selects an ideal number of attributes to disclose to each …

Multi-Cost And Upgradable Spatial Network Databases, Yimin Lin
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
In this dissertation, we first consider data processing problems in multi-cost networks and in upgradable networks. These network types are motivated by real-life situations, which do not fall under the standard spatial network formulation and have not received much attention from database researchers. In a multi-cost network (MCN), each edge is associated with more than one weight type that may affect the user-specific perception of distance. We study two query types on MCNs, namely, the MCN skyline and the MCN top-k query. In an upgradable network, a subset of the edges are amenable to weight reduction, at a cost (e.g., …

The d-metal alloy Ni1-xVx undergoes a quantum phase transition from a ferromagnetic ground state to a paramagnetic ground state as the vanadium concentration x is increased. We present magnetization, ac-susceptibility and muon-spin relaxation data at several vanadium concentrations near the critical concentration xc ~ 11.6 % at which the onset of ferromagnetic order is suppressed to zero temperature. Below xc, the muon data reveal a broad magnetic field distribution indicative of a long-range ordered ferromagnetic state with spatial disorder. We show evidence of magnetic clusters in the ferromagnetic phase and close to the phase …

Rare Regions And Griffiths Singularities At A Clean Critical Point: The Five-Dimensional Disordered Contact Process, Thomas Vojta, John Igo, José A. Hoyos
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We investigate the nonequilibrium phase transition of the disordered contact process in five space dimensions by means of optimal fluctuation theory and Monte Carlo simulations. We find that the critical behavior is of mean-field type, i.e., identical to that of the clean five-dimensional contact process. It is accompanied by off-critical power-law Griffiths singularities whose dynamical exponent z' saturates at a finite value as the transition is approached. These findings resolve the apparent contradiction between the Harris criterion, which implies that weak disorder is renormalization-group irrelevant, and the rare-region classification, which predicts unconventional behavior. We confirm and illustrate our theory by …

Meshless Mechanics And Point-Based Visualization Methods For Surgical Simulations, Rifat Aras
Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Computer-based modeling and simulation practices have become an integral part of the medical education field. For surgical simulation applications, realistic constitutive modeling of soft tissue is considered to be one of the most challenging aspects of the problem, because biomechanical soft-tissue models need to reflect the correct elastic response, have to be efficient in order to run at interactive simulation rates, and be able to support operations such as cuts and sutures.
Mesh-based solutions, where the connections between the individual degrees of freedom (DoF) are defined explicitly, have been the traditional choice to approach these problems. However, when the problem …
