Bandwidth Aggregation Across Multiple Smartphone Devices, Bradley R. Zeller
Bandwidth Aggregation Across Multiple Smartphone Devices, Bradley R. Zeller
Master's Theses
Smartphones now account for the majority of all cell phones in use today [23]. Ubiquitous Internet access is a valuable feature offered by these devices and the vast majority of smartphone applications make use of the Internet in one way or another. However, the bandwidth offered by these cellular networks is often much lower than we typically experience on our standard home networks, leading to a less-than-optimal user experience. This makes it very challenging and frustrating to access certain types of web content such as video streaming, large file downloads, loading large webpages, etc.
Given that most modern smartphones are …

Inappropriate tweets may cause severe damages on the authors' reputation or privacy. However, many users do not realize until publishing them after a while. Once published, such tweets have lasting effects that may not be completely eliminated by simple deletion, because other users may have read them or third-party tweet analysis platforms have cached them. In this paper, we study the problem of identifying regret tweets for normal individual users, with the ultimate goal to reduce the occurrences of regret tweets. We develop a machine learning approach to extract a large collection of regret tweets from noisy deleted tweets. We …

As we become more and more dependent on computer networks, using them for everything from banking and investing to shopping and communicating, computer security has emerged to be an increasingly important concern, due to undesirable cyber-security attacks. Thus, in response to this issue many efforts have been made towards accurate and robust computer security protection; however, the general problem is very challenging, diverse and ever-changing and remains still open. In this PhD dissertation we offer protection on one of these cyber-security attacks, the memory-based attacks, caused by one of the most critical software errors according to the MITRE ranking. When …

A Context-Driven Subgraph Model For Literature-Based Discovery, Delroy Huborn Cameron
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Literature-Based Discovery (LBD) refers to the process of uncovering hidden connections that are implicit in scientific literature. Numerous hypotheses have been generated from scientific literature using the LBD paradigm, which influenced innovations in diagnosis, treatment, preventions and overall public health. However, much of the existing research on discovering hidden connections among concepts have used distributional statistics and graph-theoretic measures to capture implicit associations. Such metrics do not explicitly capture the semantics of hidden connections. Rather, they only allude to the existence of meaningful underlying associations. To gain in-depth insights into the meaning of hidden (and other) connections, complementary methods have …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Three-dimensional scene reconstruction from 2-D images has many applications, such as surveillance, mission planning, autonomous navigation systems, cartography, and target recognition. Of specific interest to this research is the reconstruction of urban scenes containing man-made structures, such as roads and buildings, to support the burgeoning surveillance industry. Using 3-D maps to augment existing mission planning cartography products (DTED/SRTM, CADRG, CIB), mission and event planners will be able to compute strategic line-of-sight coverage for threat avoidance or threat prosecution. Forensic video analysts can use these models to recreate crime scenes, while law enforcement can build flight plans to minimize occlusions from …

The Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) employs Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) to measure variables such as Voltage, Frequency, and Phasor Angles every sixtieth of a second. These measurements result in terabytes of data which are analyzed to detect abnormalities in the power grid. Recently BPA has switched the data file format from DST to PDAT. A function does not currently exist to read in PDAT files in order to prepare the data for analysis. In order to do this the raw PMU data must be sorted and extracted to ensure its accuracy prior to analysis. This research worked to produce a …
Efficient Refinement Checking In Vcc, Sumesh Divakaran, Deepak D’Souza, Nigamanth Sridhar
Efficient Refinement Checking In Vcc, Sumesh Divakaran, Deepak D’Souza, Nigamanth Sridhar
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
We propose a methodology for carrying out refinement proofs across declarative abstract models and concrete implementations in C, using the VCC verification tool. The main idea is to first perform a systematic translation from the top-level abstract model to a ghost implementation in VCC. Subsequent refinement proofs between successively refined abstract models and between abstract and concrete implementations are carried out in VCC. We propose an efficient technique to carry out these refinement checks in VCC. We illustrate our methodology with a case study in which we verify a simplified C implementation of an RTOS scheduler, with respect to its …

Supporting The Specification And Runtime Validation Of Asynchronous Calling Patterns In Reactive Systems, Jiannan Zhai, Nigamanth Sridhar, Jason O. Hallstrom
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Wireless sensor networks (“sensornets”) are highly distributed and concurrent, with program actions bound to external stimuli. They exemplify a system class known as reactive systems, which comprise execution units that have “hidden” layers of control flow. A key obstacle in enabling reactive system developers to rigorously validate their implementations has been the absence of precise software component specifications and tools to assist in leveraging those specifications at runtime. We address this obstacle in three ways: (i) We describe a specification approach tailored for reactive environments and demonstrate its application in the context of sensornets. ( …
A Firewall Model Of File System Security, Lihui Hu
A Firewall Model Of File System Security, Lihui Hu
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
File system security is fundamental to the security of UNIX and Linux systems since in these systems almost everything is in the form of a file. To protect the system files and other sensitive user files from unauthorized accesses, certain security schemes are chosen and used by different organizations in their computer systems. A file system security model provides a formal description of a protection system. Each security model is associated with specified security policies which focus on one or more of the security principles: confidentiality, integrity and availability. The security policy is not only about “who” can access an …

Mining And Verification Of Temporal Events With Applications In Computer Micro-Architecture Research, Hui Meen Nyew
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Computer simulation programs are essential tools for scientists and engineers to understand a particular system of interest. As expected, the complexity of the software increases with the depth of the model used. In addition to the exigent demands of software engineering, verification of simulation programs is especially challenging because the models represented are complex and ridden with unknowns that will be discovered by developers in an iterative process. To manage such complexity, advanced verification techniques for continually matching the intended model to the implemented model are necessary. Therefore, the main goal of this research work is to design a useful …

Automatic Labeling Of Rss Articles Using Online Latent Dirichlet Allocation, Zhe Lu
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
The amount of information contained within the Internet has exploded in recent decades. As more and more news, blogs, and many other kinds of articles that are published on the Internet, categorization of articles and documents are increasingly desired. Among the approaches to categorize articles, labeling is one of the most common method; it provides a relatively intuitive and effective way to separate articles into different categories. However, manual labeling is limited by its efficiency, even thought the labels selected manually have relatively high quality. This report explores the topic modeling approach of Online Latent Dirichlet Allocation (Online-LDA). Additionally, a …

The Challenge Of Continuous Mobile Context Sensing, Rajesh Krishna Balan, Youngki Lee, Kiat Wee Tan, Archan Misra
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we highlight the challenge of continuously sensing context data from mobile phones. In particular, we show that the energy cost of this type of continuous sensing is extremely high if a) accuracy is desired, and b) power optimisations do not work well if multiple tasks are sensing concurrently. Our results are derived from our experience in building the LiveLabs context sensing platform. We present results for different types of sensing tasks; ranging from simple sensing using just one sensor all the way to multi-sensor sensing performed by concurrent high-level tasks. We end with a discussion of the …
Anger Effects On Driver Situation Awareness And Driving Performance, Myounghoon Jeon, Bruce N. Walker, Thomas M. Gable
Anger Effects On Driver Situation Awareness And Driving Performance, Myounghoon Jeon, Bruce N. Walker, Thomas M. Gable
Department of Psychology and Human Factors Publications
Research has suggested that emotional states have critical effects on various cognitive processes, which are important components of situation awareness (Endsley, 1995b). Evidence from driving studies has also emphasized the importance of driver situation awareness for performance and safety. However, to date, little research has investigated the relationship between emotional effects and driver situation awareness. In our experiment, 30 undergraduates drove in a simulator after induction of either anger or neutral affect. Results showed that an induced angry state can degrade driver situation awareness as well as driving performance as compared to a neutral state. However, the angry state did …

Mining Multi-Granular Multivariate Medical Measurements, Conrad Sykes
Mining Multi-Granular Multivariate Medical Measurements, Conrad Sykes
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
This thesis is motivated by the need to predict the mortality of patients in the Intensive Care Unit. The heart of this problem revolves around being able to accurately classify multivariate, multi-granular time series patient data. The approach ultimately taken in this thesis involves using Z-Score normalization to make variables comparable, Single Value Decomposition to reduce the number of features, and a Support Vector Machine to classify patient tuples. This approach proves to outperform other classification models such as k-Nearest Neighbor and demonstrates that SVM is a viable model for this project. The hope is that going forward other work …

3d Image Acquisition System For Facial Recognition, James E. Pearson
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
Identification of an individual has been a long standing problem in human existence. It is clear from the rising rates of identity theft and misappropriation of services that current methods employed to identify individuals is ineffectual. The most common way people identify other individuals is via recognition of the subjects face. The speed and accuracy with which one person can identify another person is uncanny leading to the development automated facial recognition systems. The vast majority of these systems use two-dimensional (2D) images imagery to perform facial recognition with limited success. The use of 2D imagery has limitations which cannot …

A Proof-Theoretic Semantic Analysis Of Dynamic Epistemic Logic, Sabine Frittella, Giuseppe Greco, Alexander Kurz, Alessandra Palmigiano, Vlasta Sikimić
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
The present paper provides an analysis of the existing proof systems for dynamic epistemic logic from the viewpoint of proof-theoretic semantics. Dynamic epistemic logic is one of the best known members of a family of logical systems which have been successfully applied to diverse scientific disciplines, but the proof theoretic treatment of which presents many difficulties. After an illustration of the proof-theoretic semantic principles most relevant to the treatment of logical connectives, we turn to illustrating the main features of display calculi, a proof-theoretic paradigm which has been successfully employed to give a proof-theoretic semantic account of modal and substructural …

Parallel Processes In Hpx: Designing An Infrastructure For Adaptive Resource Management, Vinay Chandra Amatya
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Advancement in cutting edge technologies have enabled better energy efficiency as well as scaling computational power for the latest High Performance Computing(HPC) systems. However, complexity, due to hybrid architectures as well as emerging classes of applications, have shown poor computational scalability using conventional execution models. Thus alternative means of computation, that addresses the bottlenecks in computation, is warranted. More precisely, dynamic adaptive resource management feature, both from systems as well as application's perspective, is essential for better computational scalability and efficiency. This research presents and expands the notion of Parallel Processes as a placeholder for procedure definitions, targeted at one …
Energy Efficient And Latency Aware Adaptive Compression In Wireless Sensor Networks, Thomas Mark Daniel Szalapski
Energy Efficient And Latency Aware Adaptive Compression In Wireless Sensor Networks, Thomas Mark Daniel Szalapski
Doctoral Dissertations
"Wireless sensor networks are composed of a few to several thousand sensors deployed over an area or on specific objects to sense data and report that data back to a sink either directly or through a series of hops across other sensor nodes. There are many applications for wireless sensor networks including environment monitoring, wildlife tracking, security, structural heath monitoring, troop tracking, and many others. The sensors communicate wirelessly and are typically very small in size and powered by batteries. Wireless sensor networks are thus often constrained in bandwidth, processor speed, and power. Also, many wireless sensor network applications have …

Automated Classification Of Malignant Melanoma Based On Detection Of Atypical Pigment Network In Dermoscopy Images Of Skin Lesions, Nabin K. Mishra
Doctoral Dissertations
“Melanoma causes more deaths than any other form of skin cancer. Early melanoma detection is important to prevent progression to a more deadly stage. Automated computer-based identification of melanoma from dermoscopic images of skin lesions is the most efficient method in early diagnosis. An automated melanoma identification system must include multiple steps, involving lesion segmentation, feature extraction, feature combination and classification. In this research, a classifier-based approach for automatically selecting a lesion border mask for segmentation of dermoscopic skin lesion images is presented. A logistic regression based model selects a single lesion border mask from multiple border masks generated by …
Energy Efficient Security And Privacy Management In Sensor Clouds, Vimal Kumar
Energy Efficient Security And Privacy Management In Sensor Clouds, Vimal Kumar
Doctoral Dissertations
"Sensor Cloud is a new model of computing for Wireless Sensor Networks, which facilitates resource sharing and enables large scale sensor networks. A multi-user distributed system, however, where resources are shared, has inherent challenges in security and privacy. The data being generated by the wireless sensors in a sensor cloud need to be protected against adversaries, which may be outsiders as well as insiders. Similarly the code which is disseminated to the sensors by the sensor cloud needs to be protected against inside and outside adversaries. Moreover, since the wireless sensors cannot support complex, energy intensive measures, the security and …

Refining Computerized Physician Order Entry Initiatives In An Adult Intensive Care Unit, Chevita Fuller
Refining Computerized Physician Order Entry Initiatives In An Adult Intensive Care Unit, Chevita Fuller
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Computerized physician order entry (CPOE) is used in healthcare organizations to improve workflow processes and transcription, as well as to prevent prescribing errors. Previous research has indicated challenges associated with CPOE for end-users that predispose patients to unsafe practices. Unsafe CPOE practices can be detrimental within the intensive care unit (ICU) setting due to the complexity of nursing care. Consequently, end-user satisfaction and understanding of CPOE and electronic health record (EHR) functionality are vital to avoid error omissions. CPOE initiatives should be refined post system implementation to improve clinical workflow, medication processes, and end-user satisfaction. The purpose of this quality …
Efficient Indexing For Structured And Unstructured Data, Manish Madhukar Patil
Efficient Indexing For Structured And Unstructured Data, Manish Madhukar Patil
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The collection of digital data is growing at an exponential rate. Data originates from wide range of data sources such as text feeds, biological sequencers, internet traffic over routers, through sensors and many other sources. To mine intelligent information from these sources, users have to query the data. Indexing techniques aim to reduce the query time by preprocessing the data. Diversity of data sources in real world makes it imperative to develop application specific indexing solutions based on the data to be queried. Data can be structured i.e., relational tables or unstructured i.e., free text. Moreover, increasingly many applications need …

Medical systems are potentially one domain where security is seen as an impediment to patient care and not as an essential part of a system. This is an issue for safety-critical systems where reliability and trust are essential for successful operation. Cloud computing services offer a seamless means to allow medical data to be transferred from patient to medical specialist, whilst maintaining security requirements. This paper uses a case study to investigate the use of cloud computing in a mobile application to assist with diagnostics for patients with Parkinson Disease. It was found that the developers of the app ignored …

Trustworthiness Of Web Services, Britto N. Arockiasamy
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Workflow systems orchestrate various business tasks to attain an objective. Web services can be leveraged to handle individual tasks. Before anyone intends to leverage service components, it is imperative and essential to evaluate the trustworthiness of these services. Therefore, choosing a trustworthy service has become an important decision while designing a workflow system. Trustworthiness can be defined as the likelihood of a service functioning as it is intended.
Selection of a service that satisfies business goals involves collecting relevant information such as security mechanisms, reliability, performance and availability. It is important to arrive at total trustworthiness, which incorporates all of …

Web Service Transaction Correctness, Aspen Olmsted
Theses and Dissertations
In our research we investigate the problem of providing consistency, availability and durability for Web Service transactions. First, we show that the popular lazy replica update propagation method is vulnerable to loss of transactional updates in the presence of hardware failures. We propose an extension to the lazy update propagation approach to reduce the risk of data loss. Our approach is based on the "buddy" system, requiring that updates are preserved synchronously in two replicas, called buddies. The rest of the replicas are updated using lazy update propagation protocols. Our method provides a balance between durability (i.e., effects of the …
