Many countries block the content of web pages which are deemed against the morals, religious rules or policies set by government or organization. Countries like China block the post which is against their government interest. Germany blocks contents related to Neo-Nazi group. Most of these web pages are subjected to IP address blocking, DNS poisoning and keyword based filtering. We mainly focus on keyword based filtering as it is fine grained filtering technique where the contents of web pages are filtered using blacklisting. So with increase in surveillance over network, arms race for circumvention techniques has also increased. We propose …

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
A machine-to-machine (M2M) communications network hosts millions of heterogeneous devices such as for vehicle tracking, medical services, and home automation and security services. These devices exchange thousands of messages over cellular networks. These messages are Signaling System No. 7 (SS7) messages of various types like authentication, mobility management, and many more, resulting in tera bytes of SS7 signaling traffic data over a period of days. The data generated is diverse, depending on several factors like device activity, hardware manufacturers, and radio / tower interaction. This inherent diversity makes anomaly detection in a M2M network challenging. With millions of messages to …

Impact Of Loss Synchronization On Reliable High Speed Networks: A Model Based Simulation, Suman Kumar, Lin Xue, Seung Jong Park
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Contemporary nature of network evolution demands for simulation models which are flexible, scalable, and easily implementable. In this paper, we propose a fluid-based model for performance analysis of reliable high-speed networks. In particular, this paper aims to study the dynamic relationship between congestion control algorithms and queue management schemes, in order to develop a better understanding of the causal linkages between the two. We propose a loss synchronization module which is user configurable. We validate our model through simulations under controlled settings. Also, we present a performance analysis to provide insights into two important issues concerning 10 Gbps high speed …

Human mobility knowledge is key for urban planning or mobility model's design. Therefore, estimating reliable mobility parameters is crucial to lay an unbiased foundation. However, most works estimating such features rely on datasets made up of the history of mobile network cells where the user is located when she makes active use of the network, known as Call Data Records (CDRs), or every time their device connects to a new cell, without taking into account cell changes not caused by movement. Could we accurately characterize human mobility with such datasets? In this work we consider three approaches to collect network-based …

Inferring biological networks from high-throughput bioinformatics data is one of the most interesting areas in the systems biology research in order to elucidate cellular and physiological mechanisms. In this thesis, network inference methods are proposed to solve biological problems. We first investigated how the exposure to low dose ionizing radiation (IR) affects the human body by observing the signaling pathway associated with Ataxia Telangiectasia mutated using Reverse Phase Protein Array and isogenic human Ataxia Telangiectasia cells under different amounts and durations of IR exposure. DNA damage-caused pathways are derived from learning Bayesian networks in integration with prior knowledge such as …

Search has become ubiquitous mainly because of its usage simplicity. Search has made great strides in making information gathering relatively easy and without a learning curve. Question answering services/communities (termed CQA services or Q/A networks; e.g., Yahoo! Answers, Stack Overflow) have come about in the last decade as yet another way to search. Here the intent is to obtain good/high quality answers (from users with different levels of expertise) for a question when posed, or to retrieve answers from an archived Q/A repository. To make use of these services (and archives) effectively as an alternative to search, it is imperative …

Efficient Frameworks For Lifetime Maximization In Tree Based Sensor Networks, Sk Kajal Arefin Imon
Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
In most wireless sensor network (WSN) applications, data are typically gathered by the sensor nodes and reported to a data collection point, called the sink. In order to support such data collection, a tree structure rooted at the sink is usually defined. Based on different aspects, including the actual WSN topology and the available energy budget, the energy consumption of nodes belonging to different paths in the data collection tree may vary significantly. This affects the overall network lifetime, defined in terms of when the first node in the network runs out of energy. In this thesis, we address the …
Singularity Locus For The Endpoint Map Of Serial Manipulators With Revolute Joints, Ciprian S. Borcea, Ileana Streinu
Singularity Locus For The Endpoint Map Of Serial Manipulators With Revolute Joints, Ciprian S. Borcea, Ileana Streinu
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
We present a theoretical and algorithmic method for describing the singularity locus for the endpoint map of any serial manipulator with revolute joints. As a surface of revolution around the first joint, the singularity locus is determined by its intersection with a fixed plane through the first joint. The resulting plane curve is part of an algebraic curve called the singularity curve. Its degree can be computed from the specialized case of all pairs of consecutive joints coplanar, when the singularity curve is a union of circles, counted with multiplicity two. Knowledge of the degree and a simple iterative procedure …

We prove that a surprisingly simple algorithm folds the surface of every convex polyhedron, in any dimension, into a at folding by a continuous motion, while preserving intrinsic distances and avoiding crossings. The attening respects the straight-skeleton gluing, meaning that points of the polyhedron touched by a common ball inside the polyhedron come into contact in the at folding, which answers an open question in the book Geometric Folding Algorithms. The primary creases in our folding process can be found in quadratic time, though necessarily, creases must roll continuously, and we show that the full crease pattern can be exponential …

Cross-Layer Schemes For Performance Optimization In Wireless Networks, Quanmin Ye
Doctoral Dissertations
"Wireless networks are undergoing rapid progress and inspiring numerous applications. As the application of wireless networks becomes broader, they are expected to not only provide ubiquitous connectivity, but also support end users with certain service guarantees.
End-to-end delay is an important Quality of Service (QoS) metric in multihop wireless networks. This dissertation addresses how to minimize end-to-end delay through joint optimization of network layer routing and link layer scheduling. Two cross-layer schemes, a loosely coupled cross-layer scheme and a tightly coupled cross-layer scheme, are proposed. The two cross-layer schemes involve interference modeling in multihop wireless networks with omnidirectional antenna. In …

Energy Aware And Privacy Preserving Protocols For Ad Hoc Networks With Applications To Disaster Management, Mayank Raj
Doctoral Dissertations
"Disasters can have a serious impact on the functioning of communities and societies. Disaster management aims at providing efficient utilization of resources during pre-disaster (e.g. preparedness and prevention) and post-disaster (e.g. recovery and relief) scenarios to reduce the impact of disasters. Wireless sensors have been extensively used for early detection and prevention of disasters. However, the sensor's operating environment may not always be congenial to these applications. Attackers can observe the traffic flow in the network to determine the location of the sensors and exploit it. For example, in intrusion detection systems, the information can be used to identify coverage …

Foundations Of Coverage Algorithms In Autonomic Mobile Sensor Networks, Mark Edward Snyder
Doctoral Dissertations
"Drones are poised to become a prominent focus of advances in the near future as hardware platforms manufactured via mass production become accessible to consumers in higher quantities at lower costs than ever before. As more ways to utilize such devices become more popular, algorithms for directing the activities of mobile sensors must expand in order to automate their work.
This work explores algorithms used to direct the behavior of networks of autonomous mobile sensors, and in particular how such networks can operate to achieve coverage of a field using mobility. We focus special attention to the way limited mobility …

Analysis And Optimization Of A Protocol For Mobile Element Discovery In Sensor Networks, Francesco Restuccia, Giuseppe Anastasi, Marco Conti, Sajal K. Das
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Recent studies have demonstrated that mobile elements (MEs) are an efficient solution to help decrease dramatically energy consumption in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). However, in most of cases, sensors use duty cycle schemes to save energy, and unless the ME mobility pattern is deterministic, each sensor node has to discover the presence of the ME in the nearby area before starting to exchange data with it. Therefore, in such wireless sensor networks with mobile elements (in short, WSN-MEs), the definition and analysis of a protocol for efficient ME discovery becomes of fundamental importance. In this paper, we propose an extensive …

Many large programs operate on collection types. Extensive libraries are available in many programming languages, such as the C++ Standard Template Library, which make programming with collections convenient. Extending programming languages to provide collection queries as first-class constructs in the language would not only allow programmers to write queries explicitly in their programs but it would also allow compilers to leverage the wealth of experience available from the database domain to optimize such queries. This paper describes an approach to reduce the run time of programs involving explicit collection queries by performing run time query optimization that is effective for …

Performance Modeling And Optimization Techniques For Heterogeneous Computing, Supada Laosooksathit
Doctoral Dissertations
Since Graphics Processing Units (CPUs) have increasingly gained popularity amoung non-graphic and computational applications, known as General-Purpose computation on GPU (GPGPU), CPUs have been deployed in many clusters, including the world's fastest supercomputer. However, to make the most efficiency from a GPU system, one should consider both performance and reliability of the system.
This dissertation makes four major contributions. First, the two-level checkpoint/restart protocol that aims to reduce the checkpoint and recovery costs with a latency hiding strategy in a system between a CPU (Central Processing Unit) and a GPU is proposed. The experimental results and analysis reveals some benefits, …

The mining of user generated content in social media has proven very effective in domains ranging from personalization and recommendation systems to crisis management. The knowledge of online users locations makes their tweets more informative and adds another dimension to their analysis. Existing approaches to predict the location of Twitter users are purely data-driven and require large training data sets of geo-tagged tweets. The collection and modelling process of tweets can be time intensive. To overcome this drawback, we propose a novel knowledge based approach that does not require any training data. Our approach uses information in Wikipedia, about cities …

The Linked Open Data (LOD) cloud has gained significant attention in the Semantic Web community over the past few years. With rapid expansion in size and diversity, it consists of over 800 interlinked datasets with over 60 billion triples. These datasets encapsulate structured data and knowledge spanning over varied domains such as entertainment, life sciences, publications, geography, and government. Applications can take advantage of this by using the knowledge distributed over the interconnected datasets, which is not realistic to find in a single place elsewhere. However, two of the key obstacles in using the LOD cloud are the limited support …

Application Of Cellular Automata To Detection Of Malicious Network Packets, Robert L. Brown
Application Of Cellular Automata To Detection Of Malicious Network Packets, Robert L. Brown
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
A problem in computer security is identification of attack signatures in network packets. An attack signature is a pattern of bits that characterizes a particular attack. Because there are many kinds of attacks, there are potentially many attack signatures. Furthermore, attackers may seek to avoid detection by altering the attack mechanism so that the bit pattern presented differs from the known signature. Thus, recognizing attack signatures is a problem in approximate string matching. The time to perform an approximate string match depends upon the length of the string and the number of patterns. For constant string length, the time to …

Pen-Based Methods For Recognition And Animation Of Handwritten Physics Solutions, Salman Cheema
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There has been considerable interest in constructing pen-based intelligent tutoring systems due to the natural interaction metaphor and low cognitive load afforded by pen-based interaction. We believe that pen-based intelligent tutoring systems can be further enhanced by integrating animation techniques. In this work, we explore methods for recognizing and animating sketched physics diagrams. Our methodologies enable an Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) to understand the scenario and requirements posed by a given problem statement and to couple this knowledge with a computational model of the student's handwritten solution. These pieces of information are used to construct meaningful animations and feedback mechanisms …

Automatic Detection Of Brain Functional Disorder Using Imaging Data, Soumyabrata Dey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recently, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) is getting a lot of attention mainly for two reasons. First, it is one of the most commonly found childhood behavioral disorders. Around 5-10% of the children all over the world are diagnosed with ADHD. Second, the root cause of the problem is still unknown and therefore no biological measure exists to diagnose ADHD. Instead, doctors need to diagnose it based on the clinical symptoms, such as inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity, which are all subjective. Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) data has become a popular tool to understand the functioning of the brain such …

Epistasis In Predator-Prey Relationships, Iuliia Inozemtseva
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Epistasis is the interaction between two or more genes to control a single phenotype. We model epistasis of the prey in a two-locus two-allele problem in a basic predator- prey relationship. The resulting model allows us to examine both population sizes as well as genotypic and phenotypic frequencies. In the context of several numerical examples, we show that if epistasis results in an undesirable or desirable phenotype in the prey by making the particular genotype more or less susceptible to the predator or dangerous to the predator, elimination of undesirable phenotypes and then genotypes occurs.

A Forensically-Enabled Iaas Cloud Computing Architecture, Saad Alqahtany, Nathan Clarke, Steven Furnell, Christoph Reich
Australian Digital Forensics Conference
Current cloud architectures do not support digital forensic investigators, nor comply with today’s digital forensics procedures largely due to the dynamic nature of the cloud. Whilst much research has focused upon identifying the problems that are introduced with a cloud-based system, to date there is a significant lack of research on adapting current digital forensic tools and techniques to a cloud environment. Data acquisition is the first and most important process within digital forensics – to ensure data integrity and admissibility. However, access to data and the control of resources in the cloud is still very much provider-dependent and complicated …
