Determining What Characteristics Constitute A Darknet, Symon Aked, Christopher Bolan, Murray Brand
Determining What Characteristics Constitute A Darknet, Symon Aked, Christopher Bolan, Murray Brand
Australian Information Security Management Conference
Privacy on the Internet has always been a concern, but monitoring of content by both private corporations and Government departments has pushed people to search for ways to communicate over the Internet in a more secure manner. This has given rise to the creations of Darknets, which are networks that operate “inside” the Internet, and allow anonymous participation via a de‐centralised, encrypted, peer‐to‐peer network topology. This research investigates some sources of known Internet content monitoring, and how they provided the template for the creation of a system to avoid such surveillance. It then highlights how communications on the Clearnet is …
Privacy And Legal Issues In Cloud Computing - The Smme Position In South Africa, Mathias Mujinga
Privacy And Legal Issues In Cloud Computing - The Smme Position In South Africa, Mathias Mujinga
Australian Information Security Management Conference
Cloud computing (CC) brings substantial benefits to organizations and their clients. Information technology (IT) users in developing countries, especially those in underdeveloped communities, are gaining easy and cost‐effective access to a variety of services, from entertainment to banking. South Africa has outlined a national e‐strategy that aims to improve those communities, by providing frameworks for access to information and communications technology (ICT). The products and services of small‐, medium and micro‐sized enterprises (SMME) are now reaching a wider audience through the use of technology. CC can go a long way to help government realize the national e‐strategy. There are numerous …
A 2013 Study Of Wireless Network Security In New Zealand: Are We There Yet?, Alastair Nisbet
A 2013 Study Of Wireless Network Security In New Zealand: Are We There Yet?, Alastair Nisbet
Australian Information Security Management Conference
This research examines the current level of security in wireless networks in New Zealand. A comprehensive wardrive covering the length of the country was made in January 2013 to ensure accurate comparisons from two previous wardrives as well as comparisons between the four main cities and the suburbs can be made. With 16 years since the introduction of the original IEEE 802.11 wireless standard having passed, an examination is made of the current state of wireless security of networks throughout New Zealand and the Auckland suburbs, and where possible compares these results with similar studies undertaken in 2004 and 2011. …
Usability And Security Support Offered Through Adsl Router User Manuals, Patryk Szewczyk
Usability And Security Support Offered Through Adsl Router User Manuals, Patryk Szewczyk
Australian Information Security Management Conference
ADSL routers are often used as either the target or the means for cyber crime. Many ADSL router threats could be mitigated through the effective use of inbuilt security controls and firmware updates available from vendors. Unfortunately, end‐users typically lack the technical expertise to correctly configure and secure the device. Subsequently, end‐users are reliant on well documented procedures provided by vendors in their user manuals and quick start guides. This study investigates the usability and security recommendations and encouragements put forth by vendors in their user manuals. The study demonstrates that user manual usability does not conform to ideal technical …
Complementary Feature Level Data Fusion For Biometric Authentication Using Neural Networks, Mark Abernethy, Shri Rai
Complementary Feature Level Data Fusion For Biometric Authentication Using Neural Networks, Mark Abernethy, Shri Rai
Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference
Data fusion as a formal research area is referred to as multi‐sensor data fusion. The premise is that combined data from multiple sources can provide more meaningful, accurate and reliable information than that provided by data from a single source. There are many application areas in military and security as well as civilian domains. Multi‐sensor data fusion as applied to biometric authentication is termed multi‐modal biometrics. Though based on similar premises, and having many similarities to formal data fusion, multi‐modal biometrics has some differences in relation to data fusion levels. The objective of the current study was to apply feature …

The Influence And Deception Of Twitter: The Authenticity Of The Narrative And Slacktivism In The Australian Electoral Process, Benjamin Waugh, Maldini Abdipanah, Omid Hashemi, Shaquille A. Rahman, David M. Cook
Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference
It is uncertain how many discreet users occupy the social media community. Fake tweets, sock puppets, force‐multipliers and botnets have become embedded within the fabric of new media in sufficient numbers that social media support by means of quantity is no longer a reliable metric for determining authority and influence within openly expressed issues and causes. Election campaigns, and their associated political agendas, can now be influenced by non‐specific virtual presences that cajole and redirect opinions without declaring identity or allegiance. In the lead up to the 2013 Australian Federal Election, the open source Twitter activity for the two major …

A Comparison Of Evidence Fusion Rules For Situation Recognition In Sensor-Based Environments, Susan Mckeever, Juan Ye
Conference papers
Dempster-Shafer (DS) theory, and its associated Dempster rule of combination, has been widely used to determine belief based on uncertain evi-dence sources. Variations to the original Dempster rule of combination have appeared in the literature to support particular scenarios where unreliable results may result from the use of original DS theory. While theoretical explanations of the rule variations are explained, there is a lack of empirical comparisons of the DS theory and its variations against real data sets. In this work, we examine several variations to DS theory. Using two real-world sensor data sets, we com-pare the performance of DS …
Fuzziness And Bayesian Analysis In Engineering, Matthias Stein, Michael Beer, Vladik Kreinovich
Fuzziness And Bayesian Analysis In Engineering, Matthias Stein, Michael Beer, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
An engineering analysis requires a realistic quantification of all input information. The amount and quality of the available information dictates the uncertainty model and its associated quantification concept. For inconsistent information, a distinction between probabilistic and non-probabilistic characteristics is beneficial. In this distinction, uncertainty refers to probabilistic characteristics and non-probabilistic characteristics are summarized as imprecision. When uncertainty and imprecision occur simultaneously, the uncertainty model fuzzy randomness appears useful. In a Bayesian approach the fuzzy probabilistic model provides the opportunity to take account of imprecision in data and in prior expert knowledge. The Bayesian approach ex-tended to inconsistent information is demonstrated …

"And"- And "Or"-Operations For "Double", "Triple", Etc. Fuzzy Sets, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In the traditional fuzzy logic, the expert's degree of confidence d(A & B) in a complex statement A & B (or A\/B) is uniquely determined by his/her degrees of confidence d(A) and d(B) in the statements A and B, as f&(d(A),d(B)) for an appropriate "and"-operation (t-norm). In practice, for the same degrees d(A) and d(B), we may have different degrees d(A & B) depending on the relation between A and B. The best way to take this relation into account is to explicitly elicit the corresponding degrees d(A & B) and d(A\/B), i.e., to come up with "double" …

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
To find the current level of a student's knowledge, we use a sequence of problems of increasing complexity; if a student can solve a problem, the system generates a more complex one; if a student cannot solve a problem, the system generates an easier one. To find a proper testing scheme, we must take into account that every time a student cannot solve a problem, he/she gets discouraged. To take this into account, we define an overall effect on a student by combining "positive" and "negative" problems with different weights, and we design a testing scheme which minimizes this effect.
Why Triangular Membership Functions Work Well In F-Transform: A Theoretical Explanation, Jaime Nava, Vladik Kreinovich
Why Triangular Membership Functions Work Well In F-Transform: A Theoretical Explanation, Jaime Nava, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In many practical applications, it is useful to represent a signal or an image by its average values on several fuzzy sets. The corresponding {\em F-transform} technique has many useful applications in signal and image processing. In principle, we can use different membership functions. Somewhat surprisingly, in many applications, the best results occur when we use triangular membership functions. In this paper, we provide a possible theoretical explanation for this empirical phenomenon.

Cell phones are personal devices that are seldom used by more than one individual. Today's smartphone not only serves as the key computing and communication mobile device of choice, but it also comes with a rich set of embedded sensors. In other words, smartphones can be considered less of a "phone" in the traditional sense and more of an identity management device. Furthermore, the unique array of sensors on a smartphone can communicate its owner's identity to the world. Smartphones are pervasive computing devices that ubiquitously accompany humans and must adapt accordingly. In this paper, we propose architecture to fully …

Cloud computing has emerged as a prevalent computing paradigm with the advantages of virtualization, scalability, fault tolerance, and a usage-based pricing model. It has been widely used in various computational research fields. Replica exchange molecular dynamics (REMD) and replica exchange statistical temperature molecular dynamics (RESTMD) are two sampling algorithms in molecular dynamics. Due to the inherent parallel feature of REMD and RESTMD, it is practical to convert them into cloud computing applications. However, the performance of REMD and RESTMD on clouds has not been extensively investigated. In our work, we implemented REMD and RESTMD in cloud computing environment through Hadoop, …

Pip: Privacy And Integrity Preserving Data Aggregation In Wireless Sensor Networks, Vimal Kumar, Sanjay Kumar Madria
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
With the exponential rise of pervasive computing applications, data privacy has become much more of an important issue than before. When data is aggregated at each hop in a sensor network, it becomes harder to protect its privacy. A number of privacies preserving data aggregation algorithms have recently appeared for wireless sensor networks (WSNs), very few of them however also address the issue of data integrity along with privacy. Data privacy and integrity are two contrasting objectives to achieve in general. In a privacy preserved data aggregation, it becomes easier for an attacker to inject false data hence, we suggest …

Efficient Privacy-Preserving Range Queries Over Encrypted Data In Cloud Computing, Bharath K. Samanthula, Wei Jiang
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
With the growing popularity of data and service outsourcing, where the data resides on remote servers in encrypted form, there remain open questions about what kind of query operations can be performed on the encrypted data. In this paper, we focus on one such important query operation, namely range query. One of the basic security primitives that can be used to evaluate range queries is secure comparison of encrypted integers. However, the existing secure comparison protocols strongly rely on the encrypted bit-wise representations rather than on pure encrypted integers. Therefore, in this paper, we first propose an efficient method for …
Forensic Investigation Of Mysql Database Management System, Andrew C. Lawrence
Forensic Investigation Of Mysql Database Management System, Andrew C. Lawrence
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
For various reasons, circumstances might arise in which an investigator, enlisting the help of a system administrator, needs access to an instance of MySQL that is password protected by an individual system user. If this password is unknown and the user is uncooperative or unavailable, alternative means must be utilized to gain access to the data stored within the program. Two main approaches will be explored, each with its pros and cons. In one case, the password can be bypassed entirely, granting the investigator unfettered access to the program data. The second method allows a narrower look at only some …
Feasible Algorithms For Lattice And Directed Subspaces, Jennifer (Hamlyn) Del Valle, Vladik Kreinovich, Piotr Wojciechowski
Feasible Algorithms For Lattice And Directed Subspaces, Jennifer (Hamlyn) Del Valle, Vladik Kreinovich, Piotr Wojciechowski
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In some practical situations (e.g., in econometrics), it is important to check whether a given linear subspace of a space Rm with component-wise order is a lattice -- and if it is not, whether it is at least a directed ordered space. Because of the practical importance, it is desirable to have feasible algorithms for solving these problems -- which in Computer Science is usually interpreted as algorithms whose computation time does not exceed a polynomial of the length of the input. No such algorithms were previously known. In this paper, we present feasible algorithms for solving both problems.

Afcd: An Approximated-Fair And Controlled-Delay Queuing For High Speed Networks, Lin Xue, Suman Kumar, Cheng Cui, Praveenkumar Kondikoppa, Chui Hui Chiu, Seung Jong Park
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
High speed networks have characteristics of high bandwidth, long queuing delay, and high burstiness which make it difficult to address issues such as fairness, low queuing delay and high link utilization. Current high-speed networks carry heterogeneous TCP flows which makes it even more challenging to address these issues. Since sender centric approaches do not meet these challenges, there have been several proposals to address them at router level via queue management (QM) schemes. These QM schemes have been fairly successful in addressing either fairness issues or large queuing delay but not both at the same time. We propose a new …

Towards A System For Controlling Client-Server Traffic In Virtual Worlds Using Sdn, Jason Anderson, Jim Martin
Publications
Scaling virtual worlds in the age of cloud computing is complicated by the problem of efficiently directing client-server traffic in the face of agile and dynamic compute resources. In this proposed model, Software Defined Networking and compact encoding of avatar data in packet headers are combined to make a fast, scalable, high capacity proxy server that can hide the server infrastructure while fitting well with the IaaS paradigm of modern cloud providers.

Uos : A Resource Rerouting Middleware For Ubiquitous Games, Fabricio N. Buzeto, Miriam A M Capretz, Carla D. Castanho, Ricardo P. Jacobi
Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications
Ubiquitous computing (ubicomp) relies on the computation distributed over the environment to simplify the tasks performed by its users. A smart space is an instance of a ubiquitous environment, composed of a dynamic and heterogeneous set of devices that interact to support the execution of distributed smart applications. In this context, mobile devices provide new resources when they join the environment, which disappear when they leave it. This introduces the challenge of self-adaptation, in which smart applications may either include new resources as they become available or replace them when they become unavailable. Ubiquitous games combine ubicomp and computer game …

Cyberspace has increasingly become a medium to express outrage, conduct protests, take revenge, spread opinions, and stir up issues. Many cyber attacks can be linked to current and historic events in the social, political, economic, and cultural (SPEC) dimensions of human conflicts in the physical world. These SPEC factors are often the root cause of many cyber attacks. Understanding the relationships between past and current SPEC events and cyber attacks can help understand and better prepare people for impending cyber attacks. The focus of this paper is to analyze these attacks in social dimensions and build a threat model based …

Approximate Nature Of Traditional Fuzzy Methodology Naturally Leads To Complex-Valued Fuzzy Degrees, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In the traditional fuzzy logic, the experts' degrees of confidence in their statements is described by numbers from the interval [0,1]. These degree have a clear intuitive meaning. Somewhat surprisingly, in some applications, it turns out to be useful to also consider different numerical degrees -- e.g., complex-valued degrees. While these complex-valued degrees are helpful in solving practical problems, their intuitive meaning is not clear. In this paper, we provide a possible explanation for the success of complex-valued degrees which makes their use more intuitively understandable -- namely, we show that these degrees naturally appear due to the approximate nature …

The Relational Algebra Toolkit: A User-Friendly Approach To Presenting And Processing Relational Algebra Queries On The Web, Jeremy J. Miller
The Relational Algebra Toolkit: A User-Friendly Approach To Presenting And Processing Relational Algebra Queries On The Web, Jeremy J. Miller
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Relational algebra is the mathematical basis of tools to express and optimize queries on relational data. However, there exists no convenient way to directly use, express, store, render, visualize, and execute relational algebra over the Web. Educators and practitioners are limited to creating relational algebra expressions using TeX or equation editors which cannot execute them. This work presents a solution to this issue: the Relational Algebra Toolkit (RAT). Relational data and queries are represented using purpose-built XML vocabularies, to be both machine-processable and serializable. Encoded relational algebra expressions can be rendered as parenthetical expressions and as syntax trees, translated to …
