Reputation As Public Policy For Internet Security, Leigh L. Linden, John S. Quarterman, Qian Tang, Andrew B. Whinston Sep 2012

Reputation As Public Policy For Internet Security, Leigh L. Linden, John S. Quarterman, Qian Tang, Andrew B. Whinston

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Insufficient resource allocation causes an Internet information security (infosec) problem that public policy could improve. Lack of transparency lets organizations avoid addressing internal risks, leaving vulnerabilities that are exploited by botnets, threatening information security of other Internet participants. Their protection provides no economic benefit to the firm, so this negative externality causes underinvestment in infosec. Public policy could provide a partial solution by adding incentives for organizations to have well-configured infosec. Specifically, mandatory reporting of security issues plus presenting this information to the public, can impose shame and fame on organizations through publicity and peer influence by comparison with major …

A Computational Analysis Of Bundle Trading Markets Design For Distributed Resource Allocation, Zhiling Guo, Gary J. Koehler, Andrew B. Whinston Sep 2012

A Computational Analysis Of Bundle Trading Markets Design For Distributed Resource Allocation, Zhiling Guo, Gary J. Koehler, Andrew B. Whinston

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Online auction markets play increasingly important roles for resource allocations in distributed systems. This paper builds upon a market-based framework presented by Guo et al. (Guo, Z., G. J. Koehler, A. B. Whinston. 2007. A market-based optimization algorithm for distributed systems. Management Sci. 53(8) 1345–1458), where a distributed system optimization problem is solved by self-interested agents iteratively trading bundled resources in a double auction market run by a dealer. We extend this approach to a dynamic, asynchronous Internet market environment and investigate how various market design factors including dealer inventory policies, market communication patterns, and agent learning strategies affect the …

Verification Of Graph Programs, Christopher M. Poskitt Sep 2012

Verification Of Graph Programs, Christopher M. Poskitt

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

GP (for Graph Programs) is an experimental nondeterministic programming language which allows for the manipulation of graphs at a high level of abstraction. The program states of GP are directed labelled graphs. These are manipulated directly via the application of (conditional) rule schemata, which generalise double-pushout rules with expressions over labels and relabelling. In contrast with graph grammars, the application of these rule schemata is directed by a number of simple control constructs including sequential composition, conditionals, and as-long-as-possible iteration. GP shields programmers at all times from low-level implementation issues (e.g. graph representation), and with its nondeterministic semantics, allows one …

The Fat Thumb: Using The Thumb's Contact Size For Single-Handed Mobile Interaction, Sebastian Boring, David Ledo, Xiang ‘Anthony’ Chen, Anthony Tang, Anthony Tang, Saul Greenberg Sep 2012

The Fat Thumb: Using The Thumb's Contact Size For Single-Handed Mobile Interaction, Sebastian Boring, David Ledo, Xiang ‘Anthony’ Chen, Anthony Tang, Anthony Tang, Saul Greenberg

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Modern mobile devices allow a rich set of multi-finger interactions that combine modes into a single fluid act. Such gestures may require the use of both hands: one holding the device while the other is interacting. While on the go, however, only one hand may be available to both hold the device and interact with it. In this demo, we present the Fat Thumb interaction technique, which uses the thumb's contact size as a form of simulated pressure. We present how this can be used, for example, to integrate panning and zooming into a single interaction. Contact size determines the …

Reconciling Owl And Non-Monotonic Rules For The Semantic Web, Matthias Knorr, Pascal Hitzler, Frederick Maier Aug 2012

Reconciling Owl And Non-Monotonic Rules For The Semantic Web, Matthias Knorr, Pascal Hitzler, Frederick Maier

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

We propose a description logic extending SROIQ (the description logic underlying OWL 2 DL) and at the same time encompassing some of the most prominent monotonic and nonmonotonic rule languages, in particular Datalog extended with the answer set semantics. Our proposal could be considered a substantial contribution towards fulfilling the quest for a unifying logic for the Semantic Web. As a case in point, two non-monotonic extensions of description logics considered to be of distinct expressiveness until now are covered in our proposal. In contrast to earlier such proposals, our language has the 'look and feel' of a description logic …

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

Analysis of early in-person (EIP) voting in 2008 in Cuyahoga County shows that African-American, white, and Hispanic voters who used EIP voting had significantly lower incomes than members of those same groups who voted on election day or by mail. This result applies to those voting EIP on weekdays, extended weekday hours, weekends, and the three days before election day.

Transitioning From Relational To Nosql: A Case Study, John Mcphillips Aug 2012

Transitioning From Relational To Nosql: A Case Study, John Mcphillips

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Data storage requirements have increased dramatically in recent years due to the explosion in data volumes brought about by the Web 2.0 era. Changing priorities for database system requirements has seen NoSQL databases emerge as an alternative to relational database systems that have dominated this market for over 40 years. Web-enabled, always on applications mean availability of the database system is critically important as any downtime can translate in to unrecoverable financial loss. Cost is also hugely important in this era where credit is difficult to obtain and organizations look to get the maximum from their IT infrastructure from the …

Knowledge Management Across Cultural Boundaries: Global Organizational Knowledge-Sharing, Jeffrey Harling Aug 2012

Knowledge Management Across Cultural Boundaries: Global Organizational Knowledge-Sharing, Jeffrey Harling

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The practice of knowledge management is becoming pervasive in the modern business world. Yet, as the corporate world globalizes at an alarming rate, the process of how knowledge is captured and shared does not address the cultural nuances of those new participants spread across nearly every global region. Academically, knowledge management itself does rely on three primary pillars for success; those being process, technology, and culture. However, the culture aspect in the formal knowledge programs is more closely aligned with influencing users to share knowledge that they would otherwise hold close as an asset of their gained expertise. While this …

Adaptive Dynamic Programming-Based State Quantized Networked Control System Without Value And/Or Policy Iterations, Qiming Zhao, Hao Xu, S. Jagannathan Aug 2012

Adaptive Dynamic Programming-Based State Quantized Networked Control System Without Value And/Or Policy Iterations, Qiming Zhao, Hao Xu, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, the Bellman equation is used to solve the stochastic optimal control of unknown linear discrete-time system with communication imperfections including random delays, packet losses and quantization. a dynamic quantizer for the sensor measurements is proposed which essentially provides system states to the controller. to eliminate the effect of the quantization error, the dynamics of the quantization error bound and an update law for tuning its range are derived. Subsequently, by using adaptive dynamic programming technique, the infinite horizon optimal regulation of the uncertain NCS is solved in a forward-in-time manner without using value and/or policy iterations by …

A Decentralized Fault Detection And Prediction Scheme For Nonlinear Interconnected Continuous-Time Systems, Hasan Ferdowsi, Deepthi L. Raja, S. Jagannathan Aug 2012

A Decentralized Fault Detection And Prediction Scheme For Nonlinear Interconnected Continuous-Time Systems, Hasan Ferdowsi, Deepthi L. Raja, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Complex nonlinear systems such as an aircraft, trains, automobiles, power plants and chemical plants are represented as nonlinear interconnected subsystems. Therefore, in this paper a novel decentralized fault diagnosis and prognosis (FDP) methodology is proposed for such large-scale systems. Current FDP approaches require the knowledge of the entire state or its estimated vector. But the main goal in this work is to design a local fault detector (LFD) or observer for each subsystem based on the measured local states of the subsystem alone. a local residual signal is generated via the measured states of the local subsystem and the estimated …

Nearness To Local Subspace Algorithm For Subspace And Motion Segmentation, Akram Aldroubi, Ali Safak Sekmen Aug 2012

Nearness To Local Subspace Algorithm For Subspace And Motion Segmentation, Akram Aldroubi, Ali Safak Sekmen

Computer Science Faculty Research

This letter presents a clustering algorithm for high dimensional data that comes from a union of lower dimensional subspaces of equal and known dimensions. The algorithm estimates a local subspace for each data point, and computes the distances between the local subspaces and the points to convert the problem to a one-dimensional data clustering problem. The algorithm is reliable in the presence of noise, and applied to the Hopkins 155 Dataset, it generates the best results to date for motion segmentation. The two motion, three motion, and overall segmentation rates for the video sequences are 99.43%, 98.69%, and 99.24%, respectively.

Articles

A recent revision to the European Medical Device Directive (MDD) 2007/47/EC made fourteen amendments to the original directive (93/42/EEC). A number of these changes directly affect the development of software for use in healthcare. The most significant change in relation to medical device software development is that standalone software is now seen as an active medical device and should be developed following state of the art medical device software development processes. State of the art medical device software processes is understood within the industry as developing software in accordance with IEC 62304 and standards that are aligned with it. This …

Role Of Glutathione In Lung Retention Of 99mtc-Hexamethylpropyleneamine Oxime In Two Unique Rat Models Of Hyperoxic Lung Injury, Said H. Audi, David L. Roerig, Steven Thomas Haworth, Anne V. Clough Aug 2012

Role Of Glutathione In Lung Retention Of 99mtc-Hexamethylpropyleneamine Oxime In Two Unique Rat Models Of Hyperoxic Lung Injury, Said H. Audi, David L. Roerig, Steven Thomas Haworth, Anne V. Clough

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Rat exposure to 60% O2 for 7 days (hyper-60) or to >95% O2 for 2 days followed by a 24-hour in room air (hyper-95R) confers susceptibility or tolerance, respectively, of the otherwise lethal effects of subsequent exposure to 100% O2. The objective of this study was to determine if lung retention of the radiopharmaceutical agent 99mTc-HMPAO (hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime) is differentially altered in hyper-60 and hyper-95R rats. Tissue retention of HMPAO is dependent on intracellular content of the antioxidant glutathione (GSH) and mitochondrial function. HMPAO was injected i.v. in anesthetized rats and planar images were acquired. …

A Confidence-Prioritization Approach To Data Processing In Noisy Data Sets And Resulting Estimation Models For Predicting Streamflow Diel Signals In The Pacific Northwest, Nathaniel Lee Gustafson Aug 2012

A Confidence-Prioritization Approach To Data Processing In Noisy Data Sets And Resulting Estimation Models For Predicting Streamflow Diel Signals In The Pacific Northwest, Nathaniel Lee Gustafson

Theses and Dissertations

Streams in small watersheds are often known to exhibit diel fluctuations, in which streamflow oscillates on a 24-hour cycle. Streamflow diel fluctuations, which we investigate in this study, are an informative indicator of environmental processes. However, in Environmental Data sets, as well as many others, there is a range of noise associated with individual data points. Some points are extracted under relatively clear and defined conditions, while others may include a range of known or unknown confounding factors, which may decrease those points' validity. These points may or may not remain useful for training, depending on how much uncertainty they …

Automation Of Landmark Selection For Rodent Brain Mri-Histology Registration Using Thin-Plate Splines, Ayan Sengupta Aug 2012

Automation Of Landmark Selection For Rodent Brain Mri-Histology Registration Using Thin-Plate Splines, Ayan Sengupta

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Image registration is the process of aligning two different images of the same object taken at different times, at different orientations or using different instruments. This is common in medical applications since multiple modalities are used to image different parts of the body. This is an important early step in many diagnostic procedures such as change detection, monitoring tumor or quantifying spread of a disease. The widely used landmark based registration approach is tedious, time consuming, inconsistent and error prone. Furthermore, the standard schemes based on rigid and affine transformation can only describe global geometric differences between the objects of …

Niche-Seeking In Influence Maximization With Adversary, Long Foong Liow, Shih-Fen Cheng, Hoong Chuin Lau Aug 2012

Niche-Seeking In Influence Maximization With Adversary, Long Foong Liow, Shih-Fen Cheng, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In hotly contested product categories dominated by a few powerful firms, it is quite common for weaker or late entrants to focus only on particular segments of the whole market. The rationale for such strategy is intuitive: to avoid direct confrontation with heavy-weight firms, and to concentrate in segments where these weaker firms have comparative advantages. In marketing, this is what people called “go niche or go home". The niche-building strategy may rely on “homophily", which implies that consumers in a particular market segment might possess certain set of attributes that cause them to appreciate certain products better (in other …

The functions may involve judging the type of illness, allocating the wounded according to battle injuries, deciding the severity of symptoms …

A Framework To Annotate The Uncertainty For Geospatial Data, Zhao Yang Aug 2012

A Framework To Annotate The Uncertainty For Geospatial Data, Zhao Yang

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

We have developed a new approach to annotate the uncertainty information of geospatial data. This framework is composed of a geospatial platform and the data with uncertainty. The framework supports geospatial sources such as Geography Markup Language (GML) with uncertainty information. The purpose of this framework is to integrate the uncertainty information of data from the application users and thereby ease the development of processing uncertainty information of geospatial data. Having well organized data and using this framework, the end-users can store the uncertainty information on the current geospatial data structure. For example, a GIS user can share the error …

Integrating Oracle Peoplesoft Campus Solution To External Applications, Ishwor Aryal Aug 2012

Integrating Oracle Peoplesoft Campus Solution To External Applications, Ishwor Aryal

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

An integration solution must sustain multiple PeopleSoft upgrades, which is necessary to preserve investment in system integrations. Since the underlying structures and connection technologies of PeopleSoft have been and can be migrated from version to version in order to enhance features and performance, it is critical for any external component of integration to be built based on publicly visible interfaces of the PeopleSoft component. We have developed a standard-based solution to integrate “PeopleSoft Campus Solution” into “Microsoft SharePoint” using Web services generated by PeopleSoft’s Pure Internet Architecture. We have illustrated such kind of integration in two examples that emulate some …

Theoretical Approaches To The Characterization Of Water, Aqueous Interfaces, And Improved Sampling Of Protein Conformational Changes, Alexis J. Lee Aug 2012

Theoretical Approaches To The Characterization Of Water, Aqueous Interfaces, And Improved Sampling Of Protein Conformational Changes, Alexis J. Lee

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Methods to advance the understanding of water and other aqueous systems are devel- oped. This work falls into three areas: The creation of better interaction potentials for water, improved methods for sampling configurational space, and the applications of these methods to understand systems of interest. Charge transfer has been shown by ab initio methods to be important in the water–water and water–ion interactions. A model for treating charge transfer in liquid water and aqueous systems is presented in this manuscript. The model is called Discrete Charge Transfer (DCT) and is based on the commonly-used TIP4P/2005 model, which represents the charge …

The Implementation Of The Shear Correlation Function And The Matter Power Spectrum In R, Allison A. Scheppelmann, Deborah J. Bard Aug 2012

The Implementation Of The Shear Correlation Function And The Matter Power Spectrum In R, Allison A. Scheppelmann, Deborah J. Bard

STAR Program Research Presentations

Weak gravitational lensing is an important tool in understanding the large-scale structure of the universe. One component in understanding the effect of weak gravitational lensing is the shear correlation function and matter power spectrum. The calculation of these values is often complicated and time consuming. In order to decrease the cost of these calculations they were implemented in R using parallelization. This resulted in the calculations completing faster and the process to be easily changed in order to fit the need of each researcher using the algorithms created in R.

Vignette: A Style Preserving Sketching Tool For Pen-And-Ink Illustration With Texture Synthesis, Rubaiat Habib Kazi, Takeo Igarashi, Shengdong Zhao, Richard Christopher Davis, Kenshi Takayama Aug 2012

Vignette: A Style Preserving Sketching Tool For Pen-And-Ink Illustration With Texture Synthesis, Rubaiat Habib Kazi, Takeo Igarashi, Shengdong Zhao, Richard Christopher Davis, Kenshi Takayama

Research Collection School of Computing and Information Systems

Pen-and-ink illustrations take significant amounts of skill, artistry, and patience to create. Digital tools are widely used to accelerate the process; but they provide less artistic freedom and cannot easily capture illustrators’ personal style. Furthermore, these tools disrupt the traditional illustration workflow, because they are tedious and draw attention to dialog boxes and away from the illustration itself. We present Vignette, an interactive tool that facilitates texture creation in pen-and-ink illustrations in a natural way with built in texture synthesis capabilities.

Orders On Intervals Over Partially Ordered Sets: Extending Allen's Algebra And Interval Graph Results, Francisco Zapata, Vladik Kreinovich, Cliff Joslyn, Emilie Hogan Aug 2012

Orders On Intervals Over Partially Ordered Sets: Extending Allen's Algebra And Interval Graph Results, Francisco Zapata, Vladik Kreinovich, Cliff Joslyn, Emilie Hogan

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

To make a decision, we need to compare the values of quantities. In many practical situations, we know the values with interval uncertainty. In such situations, we need to compare intervals. Allen's algebra describes all possible relations between intervals on the real line which are generated by the ordering of endpoints; ordering relations between such intervals have also been well studied. In this paper, we extend this description to intervals in an arbitrary partially ordered set (poset). In particular, we explicitly describe ordering relations between intervals that generalize relation between points. As auxiliary results, we provide a logical interpretation of …

A Novel Dataset-Similarity-Aware Approach For Evaluating Stability Of Software Metric Selection Techniques, Taghi M. Khoshgoftaar, Huanjing Wang, Randall Wald, Amri Napolitano Aug 2012

A Novel Dataset-Similarity-Aware Approach For Evaluating Stability Of Software Metric Selection Techniques, Taghi M. Khoshgoftaar, Huanjing Wang, Randall Wald, Amri Napolitano

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Software metric (feature) selection is an important preprocessing step before building software defect prediction models. Although much research has been done analyzing the classification performance of feature selection methods, fewer works have focused on their stability (robustness). Stability is important because feature selection methods which reliably produce the same results despite changes to the data are more trustworthy. Of the papers studying stability, most either compare the features chosen from different random subsamples of the dataset or compare each random subsample with the original dataset. These either result in an unknown degree of overlap between the subsamples, or comparing datasets …

A Prototype Automated Resolution Service For Public-Health Master Person Index, Sarvesh Jain Aug 2012

A Prototype Automated Resolution Service For Public-Health Master Person Index, Sarvesh Jain

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

A Master Person Index (MPI) is a software system that links together the records about individuals from a diverse set of data sources and that allows data consumers to ¬¬retrieve correlated data for a given person. The Utah Department of Health recently contracted with Utah State University to build an MPI that links data from four initial data sources, and with enough extensibility that it will eventually handle dozens. This MPI, called the Utah Public-health Master Person Index or phMPI, was to include a special software component that automatically computed the “best version of truth” about each individual using correlated …

Kansei Engineering: Towards Optimal Set Of Designs, Van-Nam Huynh, Octavio Lerma, Vladik Kreinovich Aug 2012

Kansei Engineering: Towards Optimal Set Of Designs, Van-Nam Huynh, Octavio Lerma, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many engineering situations, we need to take into account subjective user preferences; taking such preference into account is known as {\em Kansei Engineering}. In this paper, we formulate the problem of selecting optimal set of designs in Kansei engineering as a mathematical optimization problem, and we provide an explicit solution to this optimization problem.
