Opportunistic Lookahead Routing Procedure For Delay Tolerant Networks, Priyanka Rotti Jan 2012

Opportunistic Lookahead Routing Procedure For Delay Tolerant Networks, Priyanka Rotti

LSU Master's Theses

Delay Tolerant Networks are wireless networks that have sporadic network connectivity, thus rendering the existence of instantaneous end-to-end paths from a source to a destination difficult or impossible. Hence, in such networks, message delivery relies heavily on the store-and-forward paradigm to route messages. However, limited knowledge of the contact times between the nodes poses a big challenge to effective forwarding of messages. In this thesis, we discuss several aspects of routing in DTNs and present one algorithm and three variants for addressing the routing problem in DTNs: (i) the Look-ahead Protocol, in which the forwarding decision at each node to …

Design And Analysis Of Peer 2 Peer Operating System, Anudeep Meka Jan 2012

Design And Analysis Of Peer 2 Peer Operating System, Anudeep Meka

LSU Master's Theses

The peer to peer computing paradigm has become a popular paradigm for deploying distributed applications. Examples: Kadmelia, Chord, Skype, Kazaa, Big Table. Multiagent systems have become a dominant paradigm within AI for deploying reasoning and analytics applications. Such applications are compute-intensive. In disadvantaged networks the ad-hoc architecture is the most suitable one. Examples: military scenarios, disaster scenarios. We combine the paradigms of peer-to-peer computing, multiagent systems, cloud computing, and ad-hoc networks to create the new paradigm of ad-hoc peer-to-peer mobile agent cloud (APMA cloud) that can provide the computing power of a cloud in “disadvantaged” regions (e.g., through RF using …

An Extensible And Scalable Pilot-Mapreduce Framework For Data Intensive Applications On Distributed Cyberinfrastructure, Pradeep Kumar Mantha Jan 2012

An Extensible And Scalable Pilot-Mapreduce Framework For Data Intensive Applications On Distributed Cyberinfrastructure, Pradeep Kumar Mantha

LSU Master's Theses

The volume and complexity of data that must be analyzed in scientific applications is increasing exponentially. Often, this data is distributed; thus, the ability to analyze data by localizing it will yield limited returns. Therefore, an efficient processing of large distributed datasets is required, whilst ideally not introducing fundamentally new programming models or methods. For example, extending MapReduce - a proven effective programming model for processing large datasets, to work more effectively on distributed data and on different infrastructure (such as non-Hadoop, general-purpose clusters) is desirable. We posit that this can be achieved with an effective and efficient runtime environment …

Security Specialists Are From Mars; Healthcare Practitioners Are From Venus: The Case For A Community-Of-Practice Approach To Security Architectures For Healthcare, Elizabeth Coles-Kemp, Patricia Williams Jan 2012

Security Specialists Are From Mars; Healthcare Practitioners Are From Venus: The Case For A Community-Of-Practice Approach To Security Architectures For Healthcare, Elizabeth Coles-Kemp, Patricia Williams

Australian eHealth Informatics and Security Conference

Information security is a necessary requirement of information sharing in the healthcare environment. Research shows that the application of security in this setting is sometimes subject to work-arounds where healthcare practitioners feel forced to incorporate practices that they have not had an input into and with which they have not engaged with. This can result in a sense of security practitioners and healthcare practitioners being culturally very different in their approach to information systems. As a result such practices do not constitute part of their community of practice nor their identity. In order to respond to this, systems designers typically …

Accountable-Ehealth Systems: The Next Step Forward For Privacy, Randike Gajanayake, Tony Iannella, Bill Lane, Tony Sahama

Australian eHealth Informatics and Security Conference

EHealth systems promise enviable benefits and capabilities for healthcare, yet the technologies that make these capabilities possible brings with them undesirable drawback such as information security related threats which need to be appropriately addressed. Lurking in these threats are patient privacy concerns. Resolving these privacy concerns have proven to be difficult since they often conflict with information requirements of healthcare providers. It is important to achieve a proper balance between these requirements. We believe that information accountability can achieve this balance. In this paper we introduce accountable-eHealth systems. We will discuss how our designed protocols can successfully address the aforementioned …

Column: The Physics Of Digital Information-Part 2, Fred Cohen Jan 2012

Column: The Physics Of Digital Information-Part 2, Fred Cohen

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

In part 1 of this series (Cohen, 2011a), we discussed some of the basics of building a physics of digital information. Assuming, as we have, that science is about causality and that a scientific theory should require that cause(C) produces effect (E) via mechanism M (written C→ME), we explore that general theory of digital systems from the perspective of attributing effects (i.e., traces of activities in digital systems) to their causes. Full details of the current version of this physics are available online2 , and in this article, we explore a few more of them.

Technology Corner: Dating Of Electronic Hardware For Prior Art Investigations, Sellam Ismail Jan 2012

Technology Corner: Dating Of Electronic Hardware For Prior Art Investigations, Sellam Ismail

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

In many legal matters, specifically patent litigation, determining and authenticating the date of computer hardware or other electronic products or components is often key to establishing the item as legitimate evidence of prior art. Such evidence can be used to buttress claims of technologies available or of events transpiring by or at a particular date.

Applying The Acpo Principles In Public Cloud Forensic Investigations, Harjinder S. Lallie, Lee Pimlott Jan 2012

Applying The Acpo Principles In Public Cloud Forensic Investigations, Harjinder S. Lallie, Lee Pimlott

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

The numerous advantages offered by cloud computing has fuelled its growth and has made it one of the most significant of current computing trends. The same advantages have created complex issues for those conducting digital forensic investigations. Digital forensic investigators rely on the ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) or similar guidelines when conducting an investigation, however the guidelines make no reference to some of the issues presented by cloud investigations. This study investigates the impact of cloud computing on ACPO’s core principles and asks whether these principles can still be applied in a cloud investigation and the challenges presented …

An Overview Of The Jumplist Configuration File In Windows 7, Harjinder S. Lallie, Parmjit S. Bains

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

The introduction of Jumplists in Windows 7 was an important feature from a forensic examiners viewpoint. Jumplist configuration files can provide the examiner with a wealth of information relating to file access and in particular: dates/times, Volume GUIDs and unique file object IDs relating to those files. Some of the information in the Jumplist could be used to build a more precise timeline relating to system and file usage. In this article, we analyse the structure of a Jumplist configuration file and in particular a record from a Jumplist configuration file and highlight some of the important entries therein.

Pandora’S Email Box? An Exploratory Study Of Web-Based Email Forgery Detection And Validation., Richard Boddington, Grant Boxall, Jeremy Ardley Jan 2012

Pandora’S Email Box? An Exploratory Study Of Web-Based Email Forgery Detection And Validation., Richard Boddington, Grant Boxall, Jeremy Ardley

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Web based email systems may be a source of pristine digital evidence because of the perceived difficulty of client tampering with messages stored inside the email account. We demonstrate that such assumption is wrong in the case of Windows Live Hotmail®1 . Windows Live Mail®1 synchronises message on client-side computers with the Hotmail® server, benefiting users wishing to synchronise their email accounts and personal devices. However, this synchronisation opens an exploit for wrongdoers to tamper with existing email messages and attachments as well as facilitating the insertion of fabricated messages. The exploit process enables persistent storage of tampered and fabricated …

Toward Alignment Between Communities Of Practice And Knowledge-Based Decision Support, Jason Nichols, David Biros, Mark Weiser Jan 2012

Toward Alignment Between Communities Of Practice And Knowledge-Based Decision Support, Jason Nichols, David Biros, Mark Weiser

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

The National Repository of Digital Forensics Information (NRDFI) is a knowledge repository for law enforcement digital forensics investigators (LEDFI). Over six years, the NRDFI has undertaken significant design revisions in order to more closely align the architecture of the system with theory addressing motivation to share knowledge and communication within ego-centric groups and communities of practice. These revisions have been met with minimal change in usage patterns by LEDFI community members, calling into question the applicability of relevant theory when the domain for knowledge sharing activities expands beyond the confines of an individual organization to a community of practice. When …

Implementing The Automated Phases Of The Partially-Automated Digital Triage Process Model, Gary Cantrell, David A. Dampier

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Digital triage is a pre-digital-forensic phase that sometimes takes place as a way of gathering quick intelligence. Although effort has been undertaken to model the digital forensics process, little has been done to-date to model digital triage. This work discusses the further development of a model that attempts to address digital triage, the Partially-automated Crime Specific Digital Triage Process model. The model itself will be presented along with a description of how its automated functionality was implemented to facilitate model testing.

Digital Evidence Education In Schools Of Law, Aaron Alva, Barbara Endicott-Popovsky Jan 2012

Digital Evidence Education In Schools Of Law, Aaron Alva, Barbara Endicott-Popovsky

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

An examination of State of Connecticut v. Julie Amero provides insight into how a general lack of understanding of digital evidence can cause an innocent defendant to be wrongfully convicted. By contrast, the 101-page opinion in Lorraine v. Markel American Insurance Co. provides legal precedence and a detailed consideration for the admission of digital evidence. An analysis of both cases leads the authors to recommend additions to Law School curricula designed to raise the awareness of the legal community to ensure such travesties of justice, as in the Amero case, don’t occur in the future. Work underway at the University …

A Two-Stage Technology Foresight Model With System Dynamics Simulation And Its Application In The Chinese Ict Industry, Hongyi Chen, Wayne Wakeland, Jiang Yu

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Technology foresight is a process that identifies the critical technologies a country or industry needs to develop in order to shape a desired future. In this paper, a two-stage technology foresight approach is proposed. During the first stage, critical technologies are identified and evaluated by nationwide experts through Delphi surveys. In the second stage, a system dynamics simulation model is used to estimate how critical parameter values are likely to impact the attainment of foresight goals. A detailed illustration of this two-stage process is provided by a technology foresight case study in the Chinese information and communication technologies (ICT) industry. …

Comparing Methods For Interpolation To Improve Raster Digital Elevation Models, J. C. Guarneri, R. C. Weih Jr. Jan 2012

Comparing Methods For Interpolation To Improve Raster Digital Elevation Models, J. C. Guarneri, R. C. Weih Jr.

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Digital elevation models (DEMs) are available as raster files at 100m, 30m, and 10m resolutions for the contiguous United States and are used in a variety of geographic analyses. Some projects may require a finer resolution. GIS software offers many options for interpolating data to higher resolutions. We compared ten interpolation methods using 10m sample data from the Ouachita Mountains in central Arkansas. We interpolated the 10m DEM to 5m, 2.5m, and 1m resolutions and compared the absolute mean difference (AMD) for each using surveyed control points. Overall, there was little difference in the accuracy between interpolation methods at the …

On The Selection Of Prosodic Features For Language Modeling, Alejandro Vega Jan 2012

On The Selection Of Prosodic Features For Language Modeling, Alejandro Vega

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Previous studies show that immediate and long range prosodic context provide benecial information when applied to a language model. However, the fact that some features provide more information to the prediction task should be considered. If the information contribution of each feature can be determined, then a well-crafted feature set can be built to improve the performance of a language model. In this study, I measure the contribution of dierent prosodic features to a baseline trigram model. Using this information, it should be possible to build a language model that uses the most informative resources and ultimately performs better than …

Developing Governance Capability To Improve Information Security Resilience In Healthcare, Rachel Mahncke, Patricia Williams Jan 2012

Developing Governance Capability To Improve Information Security Resilience In Healthcare, Rachel Mahncke, Patricia Williams

Australian eHealth Informatics and Security Conference

General medical practices’ in Australia are vulnerable to information security threats and insecure practices. It is becoming well accepted in the healthcare environment that information security is both a technical and a human endeavour, and that the human behaviours, particularly around integration with healthcare workflow, are key barriers to good information security practice. This paper develops a holistic capability approach to information security by completing a preliminary iteration of mapping operational capabilities to governance capabilities. Using an operational backup capability matrix exemplar, the approach is analysed against the governance policy capability matrix. The resultant mapping between the operational and governance …

Bridging The Research Gap: Making Hri Useful To Individuals With Autism, Elizabeth Kim, Rhea Paul, Frederick Shic, Brian Scassellati

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

While there is a rich history of studies involving robots and individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), few of these studies have made substantial impact in the clinical research community. In this paper we first examine how differences in approach, study design, evaluation, and publication practices have hindered uptake of these research results. Based on ten years of collaboration, we suggest a set of design principles that satisfy the needs (both academic and cultural) of both the robotics and clinical autism research communities. Using these principles, we present a study that demonstrates a quantitatively measured improvement in human-human social interaction …

Categoricity And Topological Graphs, Paul Bankston

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Let X be a topological graph, with arcs joined only at end points. If Y is any locally connected metrizable compactum that is co-elementarily equivalent to X, then Y is homeomorphic to X. In particular, X and Y are homeomorphic if some lattice base for one is elementarily equivalent to some lattice base for the other.

Crisis Response Information Networks, Shan L. Pan, Gary Pan, Dorothy Leidner Jan 2012

Crisis Response Information Networks, Shan L. Pan, Gary Pan, Dorothy Leidner

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

In the past two decades, organizational scholars have focused significant attention on how organizations manage crises. While most of these studies concentrate on crisis prevention, there is a growing emphasis on crisis response. Because information that is critical to crisis response may become outdated as crisis conditions change, crisis response research recognizes that the management of information flows and networks is critical to crisis response. Yet despite its importance, little is known about the various types of crisis information networks and the role of IT in enabling these information networks. Employing concepts from information flow and social network theories, this …

Distributed And Collaborative Watermarking In Relational Data, Prakash Kumar Jan 2012

Distributed And Collaborative Watermarking In Relational Data, Prakash Kumar

Masters Theses

"Watermarking relational data is an important topic in the field of copyright protection, given the increasing prevalence of piracy and illegal duplication of databases. While there exists solutions for watermarking relational data, the problems that arise due to multiple ownership (two or more) of databases have not been acknowledged. This research focuses on developing a novel watermarking scheme to counter the problems. The watermarking scheme proposed necessitates the owners of the database in consideration to come together to perform the watermarking process. The scheme can be applied to insert watermarks in both numerical and categorical data. The watermarking scheme is …

Vehicle Path Verification Using Wireless Sensor Networks, Gerry W. Howser Jan 2012

Vehicle Path Verification Using Wireless Sensor Networks, Gerry W. Howser

Masters Theses

"Path Verification is a problem where a verifier would like to determine how closely a vehicle actually traversed a path that it claims to have traversed. This problem has critical significances in terms of vehicle mobility. Mobile nodes can be patrols officers or cab drivers, while respective verifiers can be police dispatchers or cab operators. In this paper, we design a sensor network assisted technique for vehicle path verification. In our design, a number of static wireless sensors placed in road segments will serve as witnesses and certify vehicles as they move. Post movement, these witness certificates will be utilized …

Semantic Preserving Text Tepresentation And Its Applications In Text Clustering, Michael Howard Jan 2012

Semantic Preserving Text Tepresentation And Its Applications In Text Clustering, Michael Howard

Masters Theses

Text mining using the vector space representation has proven to be an valuable tool for classification, prediction, information retrieval and extraction. The nature of text data presents several issues to these tasks, including large dimension and the existence of special polysemous and synonymous words. A variety of techniques have been devised to overcome these shortcomings, including feature selection and word sense disambiguation. Privacy preserving data mining is also an area of emerging interest. Existing techniques for privacy preserving data mining require the use of secure computation protocols, which often incur a greatly increased computational cost. In this paper, a generalization-based …
