From Phenotype To Genotype: A Structured Sparse Learning Framework For Imaging Genetics Studies, Hua Wang Jan 2012

From Phenotype To Genotype: A Structured Sparse Learning Framework For Imaging Genetics Studies, Hua Wang

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Sparsity is one of the intrinsic properties of real-world data, thus sparse representation based learning models have been widely used to simplify data modeling and discover predictive patterns. By enforcing properly designed structured sparsity, one can unify specific data structures with the learning model. We proposed several novel structured sparsity learning models for multi-modal data fusion, heterogeneous tasks integration, and group structured feature selection. We applied our new structured sparse learning methods to the emerging imaging genetics studies by integrating phenotypes and genotypes to discover new biomarkers which are able to characterize neurodegenerative process in the progression of Alzheimer's disease …

Distributed Simulated Annealing With Mapreduce, Atanas Radenski

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Books and Book Chapters

Simulated annealing’s high computational intensity has stimulated researchers to experiment with various parallel and distributed simulated annealing algorithms for shared memory, message-passing, and hybrid-parallel platforms. MapReduce is an emerging distributed computing framework for large-scale data processing on clusters of commodity servers; to our knowledge, MapReduce has not been used for simulated annealing yet. In this paper, we investigate the applicability of MapReduce to distributed simulated annealing in general, and to the TSP in particular. We (i) design six algorithmic patterns of distributed simulated annealing with MapReduce, (ii) instantiate the patterns into MR implementations to solve a sample TSP problem, and …

A Comparison Of Users' Personal Information Sharing Awareness, Habits, And Practices In Social Networking Sites And E-Learning Systems, Albert Ball

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Although reports of identity theft continue to be widely published, users continue to post an increasing amount of personal information online, especially within social networking sites (SNS) and e-learning systems (ELS). Research has suggested that many users lack awareness of the threats that risky online personal information sharing poses to their personal information. However, even among users who claim to be aware of security threats to their personal information, actual awareness of these security threats is often found to be lacking. Although attempts to raise users' awareness about the risks of sharing their personal information have become more common, it …

Cloud Security: A Case Study In Telemedicine, Michael Johnstone Jan 2012

Cloud Security: A Case Study In Telemedicine, Michael Johnstone

Australian eHealth Informatics and Security Conference

Security as part of requirements engineering is now seen as an essential part of systems development in several modern methodologies. Unfortunately, medical systems are one domain where security is seen as an impediment to patient care and not as an essential part of a system. Cloud computing may offer a seamless way to allow medical data to be transferred from patient to medical practitioners, whilst maintaining security requirements. This paper uses a case study to investigate the use of cloud computing in a mobile application for Parkinson Disease. It was found that functionality took precedence over security requirements and standards.

Legal Issues Related To Accountable-Ehealth Systems In Australia, Randike Gajanayake, Bill Lane, Tony Iannella, Tony Sahama Jan 2012

Legal Issues Related To Accountable-Ehealth Systems In Australia, Randike Gajanayake, Bill Lane, Tony Iannella, Tony Sahama

Australian eHealth Informatics and Security Conference

Information privacy requirements of patients and information requirements of healthcare providers (HCP) are competing concerns. Reaching a balance between these requirements have proven difficult but is crucial for the success of eHealth systems. The traditional approaches to information management have been preventive measures which either allow or deny access to information. We believe that this approach is inappropriate for a domain such as healthcare. We contend that introducing information accountability (IA) to eHealth systems can reach the aforementioned balance without the need for rigid information control. IA is a fairly new concept to computer science, hence, there are no unambiguously …

Crowd Documentation: Exploring The Coverage And The Dynamics Of Api Discussions On Stack Overflow, Chris Parnin, Christoph Treude, Lars Grammel, Margaret-Anne Storey

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Traditionally, many types of software documentation, such as API documentation, require a process where a few people write for many potential users. The resulting documentation, when it exists, is often of poor quality and lacks sufficient examples and explanations. In this paper, we report on an empirical study to investigate how Question and Answer (Q&A) websites, such as Stack Overflow, facilitate crowd documentation — knowledge that is written by many and read by many. We examine the crowd documentation for three popular APIs: Android, GWT, and the Java programming language. We collect usage data using Google Code Search, and analyze …

The Identification And Reduction Of Energy Streams Within The Pharmaceutical Sector Using Software Algorithms, Raymond Corbett Jan 2012

The Identification And Reduction Of Energy Streams Within The Pharmaceutical Sector Using Software Algorithms, Raymond Corbett

Theses

Pharmaceutical companies are under increasing financial pressure to optimise production costs, due to a growing number of products coming off patent, research and development costs increasing exponentially and the difficulty of bringing genuinely innovative products to market. Generic drug manufacturers are not exempt from these pressures; costs must be driven down by all drug manufacturers due to the increasingly competitive healthcare market.

The operating costs of a modern Pharmaceutical Plant run to several Million Euros per annum. Complex process’s involving the consumption of large amounts of energy, and hence costs, are a necessity. Any increase in the efficiency of a …

Optimal Adaptive Control Of Nonlinear Continuous-Time Systems In Strict Feedback Form With Unknown Internal Dynamics, H. Zargarzadeh, T. Dierks, S. Jagannathan Jan 2012

Optimal Adaptive Control Of Nonlinear Continuous-Time Systems In Strict Feedback Form With Unknown Internal Dynamics, H. Zargarzadeh, T. Dierks, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel approach is proposed for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) optimal adaptive control of nonlinear continuous-time systems in strict feedback form with uncertain internal dynamics. First, it is shown that the optimal adaptive tracking problem of strict feedback systems can be reduced to an optimal regulation problem of affine nonlinear continuous-time systems expressed as a function of tracking error by designing a properly chosen adaptive feedforward control input. Then, an optimal adaptive feedback scheme is introduced for the affine system to estimate the solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation online which becomes the optimal feedback control input for the closed-loop system. …

Visualization Of Time-Varying Data From Atomistic Simulations And Computational Fluid Dynamics, Bidur Bohara Jan 2012

Visualization Of Time-Varying Data From Atomistic Simulations And Computational Fluid Dynamics, Bidur Bohara

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Time-varying data from simulations of dynamical systems are rich in spatio-temporal information. A key challenge is how to analyze such data for extracting useful information from the data and displaying spatially evolving features in the space-time domain of interest. We develop/implement multiple approaches toward visualization-based analysis of time-varying data obtained from two common types of dynamical simulations: molecular dynamics (MD) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). We also make application case studies. Parallel first-principles molecular dynamics simulations produce massive amounts of time-varying three-dimensional scattered data representing atomic (molecular) configurations for material system being simulated. Rendering the atomic position-time series along with …

For a long time, Adobe has offered Photoshop as a far from trivial image editing program for around $100 to the Windows and Mac platforms. Recently, a web application emulating Photoshop’s features has been made freely available to …

Partitioning Method For Emergent Behavior Systems Modeled By Agent-Based Simulations, O. Thomas Holland Jan 2012

Partitioning Method For Emergent Behavior Systems Modeled By Agent-Based Simulations, O. Thomas Holland

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Used to describe some interesting and usually unanticipated pattern or behavior, the term emergence is often associated with time-evolutionary systems comprised of relatively large numbers of interacting yet simple entities. A significant amount of previous research has recognized the emergence phenomena in many real-world applications such as collaborative robotics, supply chain analysis, social science, economics and ecology. As improvements in computational technologies combined with new modeling paradigms allow the simulation of ever more dynamic and complex systems, the generation of data from simulations of these systems can provide data to explore the phenomena of emergence.

To explore some of the …

Practical And Methodological Aspects Of The Use Of Cutting-Edge Asp Tools, Marcello Balduccini, Yuliya Lierler

Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

In the development of practical applications of answer set programming (ASP), encodings that use well-established solvers such as CLASP and DLV are sometimes affected by scalability issues. In those situations, one can resort to more sophisticated ASP tools exploiting, for instance, incremental and constraint ASP. However, today there is no specific methodology for the selection or use of such tools. In this paper we describe how we used such cutting-edge ASP tools on challenging problems from the Third Answer Set Programming Competition. We view this paper as a first step in the development of a general methodology for the use …

Strongly Complete Logics For Coalgebras, Alexander Kurz, Jiří Rosický Jan 2012

Strongly Complete Logics For Coalgebras, Alexander Kurz, Jiří Rosický

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Coalgebras for a functor model different types of transition systems in a uniform way. This paper focuses on a uniform account of finitary logics for set-based coalgebras. In particular, a general construction of a logic from an arbitrary set-functor is given and proven to be strongly complete under additional assumptions. We proceed in three parts.

Part I argues that sifted colimit preserving functors are those functors that preserve universal algebraic structure. Our main theorem here states that a functor preserves sifted colimits if and only if it has a finitary presentation by operations and equations. Moreover, the presentation of the …

The Design, Implementation, And Evaluation Of A Pointing Device For A Wearable Computer, Andres Calvo, Gregory Burnett, Victor Finomore, Saverio Perugini

Computer Science Faculty Publications

U.S. Air Force special tactics operators at times use small wearable computers (SWCs) for mission objectives. The primary pointing device of a SWC is either a touchpad or trackpoint, embedded into the chassis of the SWC. In situations where the user cannot directly interact with these pointing devices, the utility of the SWC is decreased. We developed a pointing device called the G3 that can be used for SWCs used by operators. The device utilizes gyroscopic sensors attached to the user’s index finger to move the computer cursor according to the angular velocity of his finger. We showed that, as …
