Quality And Leniency In Online Collaborative Rating Systems, Hady W. Lauw, Ee Peng Lim, Ke Wang
Quality And Leniency In Online Collaborative Rating Systems, Hady W. Lauw, Ee Peng Lim, Ke Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The emerging trend of social information processing has resulted in Web users’ increased reliance on user-generated content contributed by others for information searching and decision making. Rating scores, a form of user-generated content contributed by reviewers in online rating systems, allow users to leverage others’ opinions in the evaluation of objects. In this article, we focus on the problem of summarizing the rating scores given to an object into an overall score that reflects the object’s quality. We observe that the existing approaches for summarizing scores largely ignores the effect of reviewers exercising different standards in assigning scores. Instead of …

Road: A New Spatial Object Search Framework For Road Networks, Ken C. K. Lee, Wang-Chien Lee, Baihua Zheng, Yuan Tian
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we present a new system framework called ROAD for spatial object search on road networks. ROAD is extensible to diverse object types and efficient for processing various location-dependent spatial queries (LDSQs), as it maintains objects separately from a given network and adopts an effective search space pruning technique. Based on our analysis on the two essential operations for LDSQ processing, namely, network traversal and object lookup, ROAD organizes a large road network as a hierarchy of interconnected regional subnetworks (called Rnets). Each Rnet is augmented with 1) shortcuts and 2) object abstracts to accelerate network traversals and …

The success of many different kinds of e-business operations depends on data and information, and how they are used to optimize operations, drive sales and marketing, and grow the business. The ability to manage and safeguard data as a strategic asset, transform it into actionable information, and use it as a strategic differentiator is a key contributor to the success of any business operation. What makes this an even more interesting challenge is the speed at which data have been growing in recent years, due to social networking, the Internet, mobile telephony and all kinds of new technologies that create …
Hoare-Style Verification Of Graph Programs, Christopher M. Poskitt, Detlef Plump
Hoare-Style Verification Of Graph Programs, Christopher M. Poskitt, Detlef Plump
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
GP (for Graph Programs) is an experimental nondeterministic programming language for solving problems on graphs and graph-like structures. The language is based on graph transformation rules, allowing visual programming at a high level of abstraction. In particular, GP frees programmers from dealing with low-level data structures. In this paper, we present a Hoare-style proof system for verifying the partial correctness of (a subset of) graph programs. The pre- and postconditions of the calculus are nested graph conditions with expressions, a formalism for specifying both structural graph properties and properties of labels. We show that our proof system is sound with …

Smart grid provides the technology for modernizing electricity delivery systems by using distributed and computer-based remote sensing, control and automation, and two-way communications. Potential benefits of the technology are that the smart grid's central control will now be able to control and operate many remote power plant, optimize the overall asset utilization and operational efficiently. In this paper, we propose an innovative approach for the smart grid to handle uncertainties arising from condition monitoring and maintenance of power plant. The approach uses an adaptive maintenance advisor and a system-maintenance optimizer for designing/implementing optimized condition-based maintenance activities, and collectively handles operational …

Decision-Making Models, Decision Support And Problem Solving, Mark R. Lehto, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Ji Soo Yi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This chapter focuses on the broad topic of human decision making. Decision making is often viewed as a stage of human information processing because people must gather, organize, and combine information from various sources to make decisions. However, as decisions grow more complex, information processing actually becomes part of decision making, and methods of decision sup-port that help decision makers process information become of growing importance. Decision making also overlaps with problem solving. The point where decision making becomes problem solving is fuzzy, but many decisions require problem solving, and the opposite is true as well. Cognitive models of problem …

This paper develops a utility-based optimization framework for resource sharing by multiple competing missions in a mission-oriented wireless sensor network (WSN) environment. Prior work on network utility maximization (NUM) based optimization has focused on unicast flows with sender-based utilities in either wireline or wireless networks. In this work, we develop a generalized NUM model to consider three key new features observed in mission-centric WSN environments: i) the definition of the utility of an individual mission (receiver) as a joint function of data from multiple sensor sources ii) the consumption of each senders (sensor) data by multiple missions and iii) the …
Application Of Inter-Die Rank Statistics In Defect Detection, Vivek Bakshi
Application Of Inter-Die Rank Statistics In Defect Detection, Vivek Bakshi
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis presents a statistical method to identify the test escapes. Test often acquires parametric measurements as a function of logical state of a chip. The usual method of classifying chips as pass or fail is to compare each state measurement to a test limit. Subtle manufacturing defects are escaping the test limits due to process variations in deep sub-micron technologies which results in mixing of healthy and faulty parametric test measurements. This thesis identifies the chips with subtle defects by using rank order of the parametric measurements. A hypothesis is developed that a defect is likely to disturb the …

Improving First-Year Success And Retention Through Interest-Based Cs0 Courses, Michael Haungs, Christopher Clark, John Clements, David Janzen
Computer Science and Software Engineering
Many computer science programs suffer from low student retention rates. At Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, academic performance and retention rates among first year computer science students are among the lowest on campus.
In order to remedy this, we have developed a new CS0 course featuring different "tracks" that students can choose from (e.g. robotics, gaming, music, mobile apps). This allows students to learn the basics of programming, teamwork, and college-level study in a domain that is of personal interest. In addition, the course relies on classic Project-based Learning (PBL) approaches as well as a focus on both academic and …

Cross Teaching Parallelism And Ray Tracing: A Project-Based Approach To Teaching Applied Parallel Computing, Chris Lupo, Zoë J. Wood, Christine Victorino
Computer Science and Software Engineering
Massively parallel Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) hardware has become increasingly powerful, available and affordable. Software tools have also advanced to the point that programmers can write general purpose parallel programs that take advantage of the large number of compute cores available in the hardware. With literally hundreds of compute cores available on a single device, program performance can increase by orders of magnitude. We believe that introducing students to the concepts of parallel programming for massively parallel hardware is of increasing importance in an undergraduate computer science curriculum. Furthermore, we believe that students learn best when given projects that reflect …
Maximizing Network Lifetime On The Line With Adjustable Sensing Ranges, Amotz Bar-Noy, Ben Baumer
Maximizing Network Lifetime On The Line With Adjustable Sensing Ranges, Amotz Bar-Noy, Ben Baumer
Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications
Given n sensors on a line, each of which is equipped with a unit battery charge and an adjustable sensing radius, what schedule will maximize the lifetime of a network that covers the entire line? Trivially, any reasonable algorithm is at least a 1/2-approximation, but we prove tighter bounds for several natural algorithms. We focus on developing a linear time algorithm that maximizes the expected lifetime under a random uniform model of sensor distribution. We demonstrate one such algorithm that achieves an average-case approximation ratio of almost 0.9. Most of the algorithms that we consider come from a family based …
Commit Patterns And Threats To Validity In Analysis Of Open Source Software Repositories, Alexander Curtis Maclean
Commit Patterns And Threats To Validity In Analysis Of Open Source Software Repositories, Alexander Curtis Maclean
Theses and Dissertations
In the course of studying the effects of programming in multiple languages, we unearthed troubling trends in SourceForge artifacts. Our initial studies suggest that programming in multiple languages concurrently negatively affects developer productivity. While addressing our initial question of interest, we discovered a pattern of monolithic commits in the SourceForge community. Consequently, we also report on the effects that this pattern of commits can have when using SourceForge as a data-source for temporal analysis of open source projects or for studies of individual developers.

In recent years, the Internet of Things (IOT) has drawn considerable attention from the industrial and research communities. Due to the vast amount of data generated through IOT devices and users, there is an urgent need for an effective search engine to help us make sense of this massive amount of data. With this motivation, we begin our initial works on developing a secure and efficient search engine (SecDS) based on EPC Discovery Services (EPCDS) for EPCglobal network, an integral part of IOT. SecDS is designed to provide a bridge between different partners of supply chains to share information while …

Integrating Information Quality In Visual Analytics, Ahmed Abuhalimeh
Integrating Information Quality In Visual Analytics, Ahmed Abuhalimeh
Theses and Dissertations
Visualization and visual analytics rely heavily on rapid exploration, and a combination of various information dimensions and sources performed by an analyst. Integrating Information Quality involves combining Information Quality (IQ) residing in different sources and providing users with a unified view of this data quality. This process becomes significant in a variety of situations both commercial and scientific. Integrating information appears with increasing frequency as the volume and the need to share existing information grows. This research focus on a subset of IQ dimensions, which we term subjective IQ (SIQ). Visual analytics techniques rely on fast, continuous, and interactive user …

Social Media play a critical role during crisis events, revealing a natural coordination dynamic. We propose a computational framework guided by social science principles to measure, analyze, and understand coordination among the different types of organizations and actors in crisis response. The analysis informs both the scientific account of cooperative behavior and the design of applications and protocols to support crisis management.

Users’ Perception Of Open Source Usability: An Empirical Study, Arif Raza, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Faheem Ahmed
Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications
The number of open source software (OSS) users has increased in recent years. No longer are they limited to technically adept software developers. Many believe that the OSS market share could increase tremendously provided OSS had systems that were easier to use. Although examples of good usable open source software exist, it is agreed that OSS can be made more usable. This study presents an empirical investigation to study the impact of some key factors on OSS usability from the end users’ point of view. The research model studies and establishes the relationship between the key usability factors from the …
Use (And Potential Abuse) Of Uncertainty In Hydrography, Brian R. Calder
Use (And Potential Abuse) Of Uncertainty In Hydrography, Brian R. Calder
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
The evaluation and use of uncertainty as a component of hydrographic data processing systems has grown considerably in the last decade. Uncertainty models for sounding data are now common, and progress has been made in developing models, methods and implementations for preserving this uncertainty in intermediate hydrographic data products. Less progress has been made in dealing with expressing the uncertainty in hydrographic data products to the user, however, which we contend should be our ultimate aim.
We draw here a distinction between the uncertainty assessed for observed sounding (and auxiliary) data and uncertainty as expressed to the user, and observe …

Structural Characterization Of Human Uch37, E. S. Burgie, C. Bingman, Ameet Soni, G. N. Phillips Jr.
Computer Science Faculty Works
Uch37 is a de-ubiquitylating enzyme that is functionally linked with the 26S proteasome via Rpn13, and is essential for metazoan development. Here, we report the X-ray crystal structure of full-length human Uch37 at 2.95 Å resolution. Uch37's catalytic domain is similar to those of all UCH enzymes characterized to date. The C-terminal extension is elongated, predominantly helical and contains coiled coil interactions. Additionally, we provide an initial characterization of Uch37's oligomeric state and identify a systematic error in previous analyses of Uch37 activity. Taken together, these data provide a strong foundation for further analysis of Uch37's several functions.
Probabilistic Ensembles For Improved Inference In Protein-Structure Determination, Ameet Soni, J. Shavlik
Probabilistic Ensembles For Improved Inference In Protein-Structure Determination, Ameet Soni, J. Shavlik
Computer Science Faculty Works
Protein X-ray crystallography — the most popular method for determining protein structures — remains a laborious process requiring a great deal of manual crystallographer effort to interpret low-quality protein images. Automating this process is critical in creating a high-throughput protein-structure determination pipeline. Previously, our group developed ACMI, a probabilistic framework for producing protein-structure models from electron-density maps produced via X-ray crystallography. ACMI uses a Markov Random Field to model the three-dimensional (3D) location of each non-hydrogen atom in a protein. Calculating the best structure in this model is intractable, so ACMI uses approximate inference methods to estimate the optimal structure. …

Physiologic Noise Regression, Motion Regression, And Toast Dynamic Field Correction In Complex-Valued Fmri Time Series, Andrew D. Hahn, Daniel B. Rowe
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
As more evidence is presented suggesting that the phase, as well as the magnitude, of functional MRI (fMRI) time series may contain important information and that there are theoretical drawbacks to modeling functional response in the magnitude alone, removing noise in the phase is becoming more important. Previous studies have shown that retrospective correction of noise from physiologic sources can remove significant phase variance and that dynamic main magnetic field correction and regression of estimated motion parameters also remove significant phase fluctuations. In this work, we investigate the performance of physiologic noise regression in a framework along with correction for …

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The contents of the UNIX directory resulting from unzipping the .zip file provide a demonstration of a simple polling facililty that instructors can use in class any time that students have access to a web browser. This is a good way to have students work problems and see to what extent they are converging towards correct answers.
Unlike other polling facilities, this one is completely free without any restrictions on number of simultaneous users, etc. It also allows a feature most polling facilities do not in that it may be used for completely free-form answers, and the instructor can still …

Mobile technology has significant potential to help revolutionize personal wellness and the delivery of healthcare. Mobile phones, wearable sensors, and home-based tele-medicine devices can help caregivers and individuals themselves better monitor and manage their health. While the potential benefits of this “mHealth” technology include better health, more effective healthcare, and reduced cost, this technology also poses significant security and privacy challenges. In this paper we propose \emphAmulet, an mHealth architecture that provides strong security and privacy guarantees while remaining easy to use, and outline the research and engineering challenges required to realize the Amulet vision.
Cross-Layer Analysis Of The End-To-End Delay Distribution In Wireless Sensor Networks, Yunbo Wang, Mehmet C. Vuran, Steve Goddard
Cross-Layer Analysis Of The End-To-End Delay Distribution In Wireless Sensor Networks, Yunbo Wang, Mehmet C. Vuran, Steve Goddard
School of Computing: Faculty Publications
Emerging applications of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) require real-time quality-of-service (QoS) guarantees to be provided by the network. Due to the nondeterministic impacts of the wireless channel and queuing mechanisms, probabilistic analysis of QoS is essential. One important metric of QoS in WSNs is the probability distribution of the end-to-end delay. Compared to other widely used delay performance metrics such as the mean delay, delay variance, and worst-case delay, the delay distribution can be used to obtain the probability to meet a specific deadline for QoS-based communication in WSNs. To investigate the end-to-end delay distribution, in this paper, a comprehensive …

The social network perspective has served as a useful framework for studying scientific research collaboration in different disciplines. Although collaboration in computer science research has received some attention, software engineering research collaboration has remained unexplored to a large extent. In this paper, we examine the collaboration networks based on co-authorship information of papers from ten software engineering publication venues over the 1976-2010 time period. We compare time variations of certain parameters of these networks with corresponding parameters of collaboration networks from other disciplines. We also explore whether software engineering collaboration networks manifest symptoms of the small-world phenomenon, conform to the …

Rushes footages are considered as cheap gold mine with the potential for reuse in broadcasting and filmmaking industries. However, mining "gold" from unedited videos such as rushes is challenging as the reusable segments are buried in a large set of redundant information. In this paper, we propose a unified framework for stock footage classification and summarization to support video editors in navigating and organizing rushes videos. Our approach is composed of two steps. First, we employ motion features to filter the undesired camera motion and locate the stock footage. A hierarchical hidden Markov model (HHMM) is proposed to model the …

Exposing Privacy Concerns In Mhealth Data Sharing, Aarathi Prasad
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Mobile health (mHealth) has become important in the field of healthcare information technology, as patients begin to use mobile devices to record their daily activities and vital signs. These devices can record personal health information even outside the hospital setting, while the patients are at home or at their workplace. However, the devices might record sensitive information that might not be relevant for medical purposes and in some cases may be misused. Patients need expressive privacy controls so that they can trade potential health benefits of the technology with the privacy risks. To provide such privacy controls, it is important …

Wearable devices – like the FitBit, MOTOACTV, and Jawbone UP – are increasingly becoming more pervasive whether for monitoring health and fitness, personal assistance, or home automation. While pervasive wearable devices have long been researched, we are now beginning to see the fruits of this research in the form of commercial offerings. Today, many of these commercial wearable devices are closed systems that do not interoperate with other devices a person might carry. We believe, however, these commercial offerings signal the coming of wireless body-area networks that will connect these pervasive wearable devices and leverage existing devices a user already …
