Regret Minimizing Audits: A Learning-Theoretic Basis For Privacy Protection, Jeremiah Blocki, Nicolas Christin, Anupam Datta, Arunesh Sinha Jun 2011

Regret Minimizing Audits: A Learning-Theoretic Basis For Privacy Protection, Jeremiah Blocki, Nicolas Christin, Anupam Datta, Arunesh Sinha

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Audit mechanisms are essential for privacy protection in permissive access control regimes, such as in hospitals where denying legitimate access requests can adversely affect patient care. Recognizing this need, we develop the first principled learning-theoretic foundation for audits. Our first contribution is a game-theoretic model that captures the interaction between the defender (e.g., hospital auditors) and the adversary (e.g., hospital employees). The model takes pragmatic considerations into account, in particular, the periodic nature of audits, a budget that constrains the number of actions that the defender can inspect, and a loss function that captures the economic impact of detected and …

High-Performance Composite Event Monitoring System Supporting Large Numbers Of Queries And Sources, Sangjeong Lee, Youngki Lee, Byoungjip Kim, K. Selcuk Candan, Yunseok Rhee, Junehwa Song

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents a novel data structure, called Event-centric Composable Queue (ECQ), a basic building block of a new scalable composite event monitoring (CEM) framework, SCEMon. In particular, we focus on the scalability issues when large numbers of CEM queries and event sources exist in upcoming CEM environments. To address these challenges effectively, we take an event-centric sharing approach rather than dealing with queries and sources separately. ECQ is a shared queue, which stores incoming event instances of a primitive event class. ECQs are designed to facilitate efficient shared evaluations of multiple queries over very large volumes of event streams …

Smoothly Varying Affine Stitching, Wen-Yan Lin, Siying Liu, Yasuyuki Matsuhita, Tian-Tsong Ng, Loong-Fah Cheong Jun 2011

Smoothly Varying Affine Stitching, Wen-Yan Lin, Siying Liu, Yasuyuki Matsuhita, Tian-Tsong Ng, Loong-Fah Cheong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Traditional image stitching using parametric transforms such as homography, only produces perceptually correct composites for planar scenes or parallax free camera motion between source frames. This limits mosaicing to source images taken from the same physical location. In this paper, we introduce a smoothly varying affine stitching field which is flexible enough to handle parallax while retaining the good extrapolation and occlusion handling properties of parametric transforms. Our algorithm which jointly estimates both the stitching field and correspondence, permits the stitching of general motion source images, provided the scenes do not contain abrupt protrusions.

Towards Human-Like Social Multi-Agents With Memetic Automaton, Liang Feng, Yew-Soon Ong, Ah-Hwee Tan, Xian-Shun Chen Jun 2011

Towards Human-Like Social Multi-Agents With Memetic Automaton, Liang Feng, Yew-Soon Ong, Ah-Hwee Tan, Xian-Shun Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Memetics is a new science that has attracted increasing attentions in the recent decades. Beyond the formalism of simple hybrids, adaptive hybrids and memetic algorithms, the notion of memetic automaton as an adaptive entity that is self-contained and uses memes as building blocks of information is recently conceptualized in the context of computational intelligence as potential tools for effective problem-solving [1]. Taking this cue, this paper embarks a study on Memetic Multiagent system (MeM) towards human-like social agents with memetic automaton. Particularly, we introduce a potentially rich meme-inspired design and operational model, with Darwin’s theory of natural selections and Dawkins’ …

Using Service Responsibility Tables To Supplement Uml In Analyzing E-Service Systems, Xin Tan, Steven Alter, Keng Siau Jun 2011

Using Service Responsibility Tables To Supplement Uml In Analyzing E-Service Systems, Xin Tan, Steven Alter, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper proposes using Service Responsibility Tables (SRTs) as a tool in analyzing e-service systems. First it discusses difficulties and deficiencies of using formal modeling languages such as UML in analyzing e-service systems. It proposes using SRTs as an informal language and lightweight analytical tool to be used by business professionals in analyzing e-service systems. SRTs are based on a service value chain framework but do not rely on abstract concepts and constructs, and therefore can be used by business professionals to supplement UML. We suggest a set of heuristics for transforming SRTs into two key UML diagrams, thereby illustrating …

In this paper, we show how tone mapping techniques can be used to dynamically increase the image brightness, thus allowing the LCD backlight levels to be reduced. This saves significant power as the majority of the LCD’s display power is consumed by its backlight. The Gamma function (or equivalent) can be efficiently implemented in smartphones with minimal resource cost. We describe how we overcame the Gamma function’s non-linear nature by using adaptive thresholds to apply different Gamma values to images with differing brightness levels. These adaptive thresholds allow us to save significant amounts of power while preserving the image quality. …

Fully Secure Cipertext-Policy Hiding Cp-Abe, Junzuo Lai, Robert H. Deng, Yingjiu Li Jun 2011

Fully Secure Cipertext-Policy Hiding Cp-Abe, Junzuo Lai, Robert H. Deng, Yingjiu Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In ciphertext-policy attributed-based encryption (CP-ABE), each ciphertext is labeled by the encryptor with an access structure (also called ciphertext policy) and each private key is associated with a set of attributes. A user should be able to decrypt a ciphertext if and only if his private key attributes satisfy the access structure. The traditional security property of CP-ABE is plaintext privacy, which ciphertexts reveal no information about the underlying plaintext. At ACNS’08, Nishide, Yoneyama and Ohta introduced the notion of ciphertext-policy hiding CP-ABE. In addition to protecting the privacy of plaintexts, ciphertext-policy hiding CP-ABE also protects the description of the access …

Hierarchical Identity-Based Chameleon Hash And Its Applications, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng, Xuhua Ding, Junzuo Lai, Yunlei Zhao Jun 2011

Hierarchical Identity-Based Chameleon Hash And Its Applications, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng, Xuhua Ding, Junzuo Lai, Yunlei Zhao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

At ACNS 2008, Canard et al. introduced the notion of trapdoor sanitizable signature (TSS) based on identity-based chameleon hash (IBCH). Trapdoor sanitizable signatures allow the signer of a message to delegate, at any time, the power of sanitization to possibly several entities who can modify predetermined parts of the message and generate a new signature on the sanitized message without interacting with the original signer. In this paper, we introduce the notion of hierarchical identity-based chameleon hash (HIBCH), which is a hierarchical extension of IBCH. We show that HIBCH can be used to construct other cryptographic primitives, including hierarchical trapdoor …

A Quality Metric For Sustainable Innovations, Arcot Desai Narasimhalu Jun 2011

A Quality Metric For Sustainable Innovations, Arcot Desai Narasimhalu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Sustainability has become a major concern for nations and firms especially since the Kyoto Protocol was defined in 1997. While there have been several studies on benchmarks for national innovation systems and effectiveness of innovation management within firms there is as yet no reasonable metric for determining the quality of an innovation much less its quality relating to sustainability? Similarly, there have been several studies on sustainability but that such research groups have also not focused on developing a metric for denoting the quality of sustainable innovations. This paper offers a metric that defines the quality of an innovation, especially …

Assisting Human Motion-Tasks With Minimal, Real-Time Feedback, Paritosh A. Kavathekar Jun 2011

Assisting Human Motion-Tasks With Minimal, Real-Time Feedback, Paritosh A. Kavathekar

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Teaching physical motions such as riding, exercising, swimming, etc. to human beings is hard. Coaches face difficulties in communicating their feedback verbally and cannot correct the student mid-action; teaching videos are two dimensional and suffer from perspective distortion. Systems that track a user and provide him real-time feedback have many potential applications: as an aid to the visually challenged, improving rehabilitation, improving exercise routines such as weight training or yoga, teaching new motion tasks, synchronizing motions of multiple actors, etc. It is not easy to deliver real-time feedback in a way that is easy to interpret, yet unobtrusive enough to …

Developing Digital Field Guides For Plants: A Study From The Perspective Of Users, Emily Roseanne Schwarz

Master's Theses

A field guide is a tool to identify an object of natural history. Field guides
cover a wide range of topics from plants to fungi, birds to mammals, and shells to minerals. Traditionally, field guides are books, usually small enough to be carried outdoors . They enjoy wide popularity in modern life; almost every American home and library owns at least one field guide, and the same is also true for other areas of the world.

At this time, companies, non-profits, and universities are developing computer
technologies to replace printed field guides for identifying plants. This thesis
examines the state …

Applications Of Stochastic Simulation In Two-Stage Multiple Comparisons With The Best Problem And Time Average Variance Constant Estimation, Dibyendu Chakrabarti May 2011

Applications Of Stochastic Simulation In Two-Stage Multiple Comparisons With The Best Problem And Time Average Variance Constant Estimation, Dibyendu Chakrabarti

Dissertations

In this dissertation, we study two problems. In the first part, we consider the two-stage methods for comparing alternatives using simulation. Suppose there are a finite number of alternatives to compare, with each alternative having an unknown parameter that is the basis for comparison. The parameters are to be estimated using simulation, where the alternatives are simulated independently. We develop two-stage selection and multiple-comparison procedures for simulations under a general framework. The assumptions are that each alternative has a parameter estimation process that satisfies a random- time-change central limit theorem (CLT), and there is a weakly consistent variance estimator (WCVE) …

Active Caching For Recommender Systems, Muhammad Umar Qasim May 2011

Active Caching For Recommender Systems, Muhammad Umar Qasim

Dissertations

Web users are often overwhelmed by the amount of information available while carrying out browsing and searching tasks. Recommender systems substantially reduce the information overload by suggesting a list of similar documents that users might find interesting. However, generating these ranked lists requires an enormous amount of resources that often results in access latency. Caching frequently accessed data has been a useful technique for reducing stress on limited resources and improving response time. Traditional passive caching techniques, where the focus is on answering queries based on temporal locality or popularity, achieve a very limited performance gain. In this dissertation, we …

Ranking Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms With Support Vector Regression In Continuous Phenotypes, Seif Shahidain May 2011

Ranking Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms With Support Vector Regression In Continuous Phenotypes, Seif Shahidain

Theses

Support vector machines (SVM) have been used to improve the ranking of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) over traditional chi-square tests in disease case studies [2]. In this investigation, ranking SNPs with support vector regression (SVR) was compared to the Wald test in predicting continuous phenotypes. SVR-ranked SNPs consistently outperformed the Wald test-ranked SNPs to provide a more accurate prediction of the phenotype with fewer SNPs across several methods of prediction.

A project was completed to define requirements and recommendations, obtain necessary upgrades to both hardware and network infrastucture, reorganize data storage in a local geodatabase, and institute methods for more efficient instruction using ArcView and ArcCatalog applications from the software suite ArcGIS Desktop by ESRI. Subsequent adoption of the changes …

Flexible Storylines, Ivan Dmitrievich Romashka May 2011

Flexible Storylines, Ivan Dmitrievich Romashka

Theses and Dissertations

A long-standing goal of computer-based entertainment is the creation of a story where a user is in control of portions of the storyline. These non-linear stories give a user an opportunity to adapt the story to his or her interests, schedule and needs. The Internet has made non-linear video a reality. Different approaches have been taken to create and play non-linear video stories. They suffer from lack of simplicity, smoothness, and television-like experience in story creation and presentation. Flexible Storylines provide a way to easily create and present non-linear video stories. The creation of these stories is done using a …

Proofs Of Correctness For Three Decentralized Authentication Protocols Using Strand Spaces, Pavan Kumar Vankamamidi

Theses and Dissertations

Security is a major concern is today's online world. As online activities become increasingly sensitive, service providers rely on security protocols to ensure confidentiality, integrity and authentication of their users and data. Greater assurance is provided when these protocols are verified to be correct. Strand Spaces is a method to formally analyze security protocols. The arguments are based on the messages being transmitted and received while assuming that the underlying cryptographic primitives are secure. This thesis demonstrates that the protocols Luau, pwdArmor and Kiwi are secure using Strand Spaces methodology.

Digital Forensics Investigation In A Collegiate Environment, Robert E. Johnston May 2011

Digital Forensics Investigation In A Collegiate Environment, Robert E. Johnston

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Creating, building, managing a cost effective digital forensics lab including a team of qualified examiners can be a challenge for colleges [1] with multiple campuses in multiple towns, counties and states. Leaving such examination responsibilities to each of the campuses results in not only disparity in the results but more than likely excessive duplication of efforts as well as the potential for compromise of evidence. Centralizing the forensic efforts results in a team that is not subject to the political pressures of a campus and virtually eliminates the possibility of examiner favoritism. Learn what it takes to create a cost …
