Privacy In "The Cloud": Applying Nissenbaum's Theory Of Contextual Integrity, Frances Grodzinsky, Herman T. Tavani

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

The present essay is organized into five main sections. We begin with a few preliminary remarks about "cloud computing," which are developed more fully in a later section. This is followed by a brief overview of the evolution of Helen Nissenbaum's framework of "privacy as contextual integrity." In particular, we examine Nissenbaum's "Decision Heuristic" model, described in her most recent work on privacy (Nissenabum 2010), to see how it enables the contextual-integrity framework to respond to privacy challenges posed by new and emerging technologies. We then apply that heuristic device to questions surrounding one aspect of cloud computing -- viz., …

Exploring Agent-Based Simulations In Political Science Using Aggregate Temporal Graphs, R. Jordan Crouser, Jeremy G. Freeman, Remco Chang

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Agent-based simulation has become a key technique for modeling and simulating dynamic, complicated behaviors in social and behavioral sciences. Lacking the appropriate tools and support, it is difficult for social scientists to thoroughly analyze the results of these simulations. In this work, we capture the complex relationships between discrete simulation states by visualizing the data as a temporal graph. In collaboration with expert analysts, we identify two graph structures which capture important relationships between pivotal states in the simulation and their inevitable outcomes. Finally, we demonstrate the utility of these structures in the interactive analysis of a large-scale social science …

How Locus Of Control Influences Compatibility With Visualization Style, Caroline Ziemkiewicz, R. Jordan Crouser, Ashley Rye Yauilla, Sara L. Su, William Ribarsky, Remco Chang

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Existing research suggests that individual personality differences are correlated with a user’s speed and accuracy in solving problems with different types of complex visualization systems. In this pa- per, we extend this research by isolating factors in personality traits as well as in the visualizations that could have contributed to the observed correlation. We focus on a personality trait known as “lo- cus of control,” which represents a person’s tendency to see them- selves as controlled by or in control of external events. To isolate variables of the visualization design, we control extraneous factors such as color, interaction, and labeling, …

Efficient Evaluation Of Continuous Text Seach Queries, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Hwee Hwa Pang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Consider a text filtering server that monitors a stream of incoming documents for a set of users, who register their interests in the form of continuous text search queries. The task of the server is to constantly maintain for each query a ranked result list, comprising the recent documents (drawn from a sliding window) with the highest similarity to the query. Such a system underlies many text monitoring applications that need to cope with heavy document traffic, such as news and email monitoring. In this paper, we propose the first solution for processing continuous text queries efficiently. Our objective is to …

Design And Implementation Of An Enterprise Data Warehouse, Edward M. Leonard Oct 2011

Design And Implementation Of An Enterprise Data Warehouse, Edward M. Leonard

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The reporting and sharing of information has been synonymous with databases as long as there have been systems to host them. Now more than ever, users expect the sharing of information in an immediate, efficient, and secure manner. However, due to the sheer number of databases within the enterprise, getting the data in an effective fashion requires a coordinated effort between the existing systems. There is a very real need today to have a single location for the storage and sharing of data that users can easily utilize to make improved business decisions, rather than trying to traverse the multiple …

Modeling Cost Of Interruption (Coi) To Manage Unwanted Interruptions For Mobile Devices, Sina Zulkernain Oct 2011

Modeling Cost Of Interruption (Coi) To Manage Unwanted Interruptions For Mobile Devices, Sina Zulkernain

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Unwanted and untimely interruptions have been a major cause in the loss of productivity in recent years. It has been found that they are mostly detrimental to the immediate task at hand. Multiple approaches have been proposed to address the problem of interruption by calculating cost of it. The Cost Of Interruption (COI) gives a measure of the probabilistic value of harmfulness of an inopportune interruption. Bayesian Inference stands as the premier model so far to calculate this COI. However, Bayesian-based models suffer from not being able to model context accurately in situations where a priori, conditional probabilities and uncertainties …

A Genetic Algorithm Scheduling Approach For Virtual Machine Resources In A Cloud Computing Environment, Shailesh Sawant Oct 2011

A Genetic Algorithm Scheduling Approach For Virtual Machine Resources In A Cloud Computing Environment, Shailesh Sawant

Master's Projects

In the present cloud computing environment, the scheduling approaches for VM (Virtual Machine) resources only focus on the current state of the entire system. Most often they fail to consider the system variation and historical behavioral data which causes system load imbalance. To present a better approach for solving the problem of VM resource scheduling in a cloud computing environment, this project demonstrates a genetic algorithm based VM resource scheduling strategy that focuses on system load balancing. The genetic algorithm approach computes the impact in advance, that it will have on the system after the new VM resource is deployed …

Actibot: A Botnet To Evade Active Detection, Xinjun Zhang

Master's Projects

In recent years, botnets have emerged as a serious threat on the Internet. Botnets are commonly used for exploits such as distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, identity theft, spam, and click fraud. The immense size of botnets, some consisting of hundreds of thousands of compromised computers, increases the speed and severity of attacks. Unlike passive behavior anomaly detection techniques, active botnet detection aims to collect evidence actively, in order to reduce detection time and increase accuracy. In this project, we develop and analyze a botnet that we call ActiBot, which can evade some types of active detection mechanisms. Future …

Enhancing Productivity Of Recruitment Process Using Data Mining & Text Mining Tools, Charul Saxena Oct 2011

Enhancing Productivity Of Recruitment Process Using Data Mining & Text Mining Tools, Charul Saxena

Master's Projects

Digital communication has significantly reduced the time it takes to send a résumé, but the recruiter’s work has become more complicated because with this technological advancement they get more résumés for each job opening. It becomes almost impossible to physically scan each résumé that meets their organization’s job requirement. The filtering and search techniques provide hundreds of résumés that can fulfill the desired criteria. Most approaches focus on either parsing the résumé to get information or propose some filtering methods. Moreover, résumés vary in format and style, making it difficult to maintain a structural repository which would contain all the …
