A Virtualization-Based Approach For Zone Migration In Distributed Virtual Environments, Nguyen Binh Duong Ta, Thang Nguyen, Tran Nguyen, Do Nguyen, Xueyan Tang, Wentong Cai, Suiping Zhou
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper deals with the zone migration problem in large-scale distributed virtual environments (DVEs), e.g., massively multi-player online games, distributed military simulations, etc. To support real-time interactions among thousands of concurrent, geographically separated clients, a distributed server architecture is generally needed. In such architecture, the large virtual world can be partitioned into multiple smaller zones, enabling load distributions or zone-to-server mappings to improve interactivity. For example, a zone might be mapped (assigned) to a server location near most of its clients to reduce network latency. In this paper, we consider the problem of live zone migration over wide area networks …
How Information Management Capability Influences Firm Performance, Sunil Mithas, Narayan Ramasubbu, V. Sambamurthy
How Information Management Capability Influences Firm Performance, Sunil Mithas, Narayan Ramasubbu, V. Sambamurthy
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
How do information technology capabilities contribute to firm performance? This study develops a conceptual model linking IT-enabled information management capability with three important organizational capabilities (customer management capability, process management capability, and performance management capability). We argue that these three capabilities mediate the relationship between information management capability and firm performance. To test our conceptual model, we use a rare archival data set that contains actual scores from multidimensional and high-quality assessments of firms and intraorganizational units of a conglomerate business group that had adopted a model of performance excellence for organizational transformation based on the Baldrige criteria. This research …

Secure Mobile Subscription Of Sensor-Encrypted Data, Cheng-Kang Chu, Wen-Tao Zhu, Sherman S. M. Chow, Jianying Zhou, Robert H. Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In an end-to-end encryption model for a wireless sensor network (WSN), the network control center preloads encryption and decryption keys to the sensor nodes and the subscribers respectively, such that a subscriber can use a mobile device in the deployment field to decrypt the sensed data encrypted by the more resource-constrained sensor nodes. This paper proposes SMS-SED, a provably secure yet practically efficient key assignment system featuring a discrete time-based access control, to better support a business model where the sensors deployer rents the WSN to customers who desires a higher flexibility beyond subscribing to strictly consecutive periods. In SMS-SED, …
Nuclear Pairing Reduction Due To Rotation And Blocking, X. Wu, Z.H. Zhang, J.Y. Zeng, Y.A. Lei
Nuclear Pairing Reduction Due To Rotation And Blocking, X. Wu, Z.H. Zhang, J.Y. Zeng, Y.A. Lei
Faculty Publications
Nuclear pairing gaps of normally deformed and superdeformed nuclei are investigated using the particle-number-conserving (PNC) formalism for the cranked shell model, in which the blocking effects are treated exactly. Both rotational frequency omega dependence and seniority (number of unpaired particles) nu dependence of the pairing gap (Delta) over tilde are investigated. For the ground-state bands of even-even nuclei, PNC calculations show that, in general, (Delta) over tilde decreases with increasing omega, but the omega dependence is much weaker than that calculated by the number-projected Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov approach. For the multiquasiparticle bands (seniority nu > 2), the pairing gaps stay almost omega independent. …
Identifying Horizontal Gene Transfer Using Anomalies In Protein Structures And Sequences, Venkat Ram B. Santosh
Identifying Horizontal Gene Transfer Using Anomalies In Protein Structures And Sequences, Venkat Ram B. Santosh
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Genetics has traditionally focused on vertical gene transfer, which is the passing of the genetic material of an organism to its offspring. However, recent studies in genetics increased the awareness that horizontal gene transfer, which is the passing of the genetic material of an organism to another organism that is not its offspring, is also a significant phenomenon. Horizontal gene transfer is thought to play a major role in the natural evolution of bacteria, such as, when several different types of bacteria all suddenly develop the same drug resistance genes. Artificial horizontal gene transfer occurs in genetic engineering.

Computation Programs Of The Astronomical Vessel Position, Chih-Li Chen, Tsung-Hsuan Hsieh
Computation Programs Of The Astronomical Vessel Position, Chih-Li Chen, Tsung-Hsuan Hsieh
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In open sea sailing, as opposed to sailing with satellite navigation systems, the astronomical vessel position (AVP) is not limited by military codes. If programs can be developed to solve the AVP directly, drawbacks of current methods for performing marine operations can be greatly improved. Complete AVP computations have two necessary points: compute the observed altitude and compute the AVP for two bodies. Thus, this paper utilizes Matlab® programming language to develop the observed altitude (ObsAltPro) and the AVP by using intercept method (IMPro-2) programs, respectively. Adopting the ObsAltPro can avoid the use of nautical almanacs and directly obtain the …
Due-Date Assignment And Optional Maintenance Activity Scheduling Problem With Linear Deterioreting Jobs, Chou-Jung Hsu, Suh-Jenq Yang, Dar-Li Yang
Due-Date Assignment And Optional Maintenance Activity Scheduling Problem With Linear Deterioreting Jobs, Chou-Jung Hsu, Suh-Jenq Yang, Dar-Li Yang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The focus of this work is to analyze linear deteriorating jobs in a single-machine scheduling problem with due-date assignment and maintenance activity. The linear deteriorating jobs means its processing time is an increasing function of their starting time. The objective is to minimize the total of earliness, tardiness and due-date cost. To solve the scheduling problem addressed in this work, we have to determine the job sequence, the common due-date, and the location of a maintenance activity. We show that the problem can be solved optimally in O(n2 log n) time.
Generalized Xyz Data Editor Software For Marine Geophysical Survey, Yet-Chung Chang, Ching-Hui Tsai, Shu-Kun Hsu
Generalized Xyz Data Editor Software For Marine Geophysical Survey, Yet-Chung Chang, Ching-Hui Tsai, Shu-Kun Hsu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
For most marine surveying data processing tasks, such as gravity, magnetic or echo-sounding, to find and eliminate the errors among the raw data is a tedious and time-consuming process. Usually, the Graphical User Interface (GUI) software provided with the data acquisition system is very useful to reduce the manpower requirements and speed up processing. However, each tool typically only displays one specific data type or format. In this paper, a GUI program is designed for general marine geophysical data editing. It allows users to define their own data formats, and thereafter it can recognize the data type automatically according to …
Numerical Solutions Of Differential-Algebraic Equations And Its Applications In Solving Tppc Problems, He-Sheng Wang, Wei-Lun Jhu, Chee-Fai Yung, Ping-Feng Wang
Numerical Solutions Of Differential-Algebraic Equations And Its Applications In Solving Tppc Problems, He-Sheng Wang, Wei-Lun Jhu, Chee-Fai Yung, Ping-Feng Wang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In this paper, we present a numerical method for solving nonlinear differential algebraic equations (DAE’s) based on the backward differential formulas (BDF) and the Pade series. Usefulness of the method is then illustrated by a numerical example, which is concerned with the derivation of the optimal guidance law for spacecraft. This kind of problems is called trajectory-prescribed path control (TPPC) in the literature. We reformulate the problem as a Hamiltonian DAE system (usually with a higher index). After establishing the system of spacecraft dynamics, we can derive the optimal guidance law of the system by the proposed numerical method.

Improving Low Power Processor Efficiency With Static Pipelining, Ian Finlayson, Gang-Ryung Uh, David Whalley, Gary Tyson
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
A new generation of mobile applications requires reduced energy consumption without sacrificing execution performance. In this paper, we propose to respond to these conflicting demands with an innovative statically pipelined processor supported by an optimizing compiler. The central idea of the approach is that the control during each cycle for each portion of the processor is explicitly represented in each instruction. Thus the pipelining is in effect statically determined by the compiler. The benefits of this approach include simpler hardware and that it allows the compiler to perform optimizations that are not possible on traditional architectures. The initial results indicate …
Programming Language Fragmentation And Developer Productivity: An Empirical Study, Jonathan L. Krein
Programming Language Fragmentation And Developer Productivity: An Empirical Study, Jonathan L. Krein
Theses and Dissertations
In an effort to increase both the quality of software applications and the efficiency with which applications can be written, developers often incorporate multiple programming languages into software projects. Although language specialization arguably introduces benefits, the total impact of the resulting language fragmentation (working concurrently in multiple programming languages) on developer performance is unclear. For instance, developers may solve problems more efficiently when they have multiple language paradigms at their disposal. However, the overhead of maintaining efficiency in more than one language may outweigh those benefits. This thesis represents a first step toward understanding the relationship between language fragmentation and …

Intergroup Prisoner’S Dilemma With Intragroup Power Dynamics, Ion Juvina, Christian Lebiere, Jolie M. Martin, Cleotilde Gonzalez
Psychology Faculty Publications
The Intergroup Prisoner’s Dilemma with Intragroup Power Dynamics (IPD^2) is a new game paradigm for studying human behavior in conflict situations. IPD^2 adds the concept of intragroup power to an intergroup version of the standard Repeated Prisoner’s Dilemma game. We conducted a laboratory study in which individual human participants played the game against computer strategies of various complexities. The results show that participants tend to cooperate more when they have greater power status within their groups. IPD^2 yields increasing levels of mutual cooperation and decreasing levels of mutual defection, in contrast to a variant of Intergroup Prisoner’s Dilemma without intragroup …
When Is An Enterprise Service Bus (Esb) The Right Choice For An Integrated Technology Solution?, John (Gerry) Burns
When Is An Enterprise Service Bus (Esb) The Right Choice For An Integrated Technology Solution?, John (Gerry) Burns
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
The Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) is an important systems integration technology often closely associated with Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). Some maintain that an ESB should not be used apart from SOA. Others see the ESB simply as the next generation of middleware, incorporating the best of its predecessors, Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) and Message Oriented Middleware (MOM), and a candidate for any integration requirement. Is the ESB a one-size-fits-all solution to be trusted for any integration requirement, or must its use be carefully considered with proper due diligence based on application complexity and/or the presence or absence of a defined …
Performance Limit Of Image Segmentation Algorithms, Renbin Peng, Pramod Varshney
Performance Limit Of Image Segmentation Algorithms, Renbin Peng, Pramod Varshney
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports
Image segmentation is a very important step in image analysis, and performance evaluation of segmentation algorithms plays a key role both in developing efficient algorithms and in selecting suitable methods for the given tasks. Although a number of publications have appeared on segmentation methodology and segmentation performance evaluation, little attention has been given to statistically bounding the performance of image segmentation algorithms. In this paper, a modified Cramér–Rao bound combined with the Affine bias model is employed to determine the performance limit of image segmentation algorithms. A fuzzy segmentation formulation is considered, of which hard segmentation is a special case. …
Conical Existence Of Closed Curves On Convex Polyhedra, Joseph O'Rourke, Costin Vîlcu
Conical Existence Of Closed Curves On Convex Polyhedra, Joseph O'Rourke, Costin Vîlcu
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
Let C be a simple, closed, directed curve on the surface of a convex polyhedron P. We identify several classes of curves C that "live on a cone," in the sense that C and a neighborhood to one side may be isometrically embedded on the surface of a cone Lambda, with the apex a of Lambda enclosed inside (the image of) C; we also prove that each point of C is "visible to" a. In particular, we obtain that these curves have non-self-intersecting developments in the plane. Moreover, the curves we identify that live on cones to both sides support …

On-Line Planning And Scheduling: An Application To Controlling Modular Printers, Wheeler Ruml, Minh Binh Do, Rong Zhou, Markus P. J. Fromherz
Computer Science
We present a case study of artificial intelligence techniques applied to the control of production printing equipment. Like many other real-world applications, this complex domain requires high-speed autonomous decision-making and robust continual operation. To our knowledge, this work represents the first successful industrial application of embedded domain-independent temporal planning. Our system handles execution failures and multi-objective preferences. At its heart is an on-line algorithm that combines techniques from state-space planning and partial-order scheduling. We suggest that this general architecture may prove useful in other applications as more intelligent systems operate in continual, on-line settings. Our system has been used to …

Itil Adoption In Healthcare: A Study Of Process Impact At A New England Hospital A Study Of Process Impact At A New England Hospital, Dawn Almeida
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
This is a study of how adopting Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) at a New England hospital impacted service management. The New England hospital began the adoption of ITIL by changing three existing ad-hoc processes to standardized processes following ITIL best practices. Those processes were knowledge management, software management and incident management. This study shows the impact on the quality of IT services and IT/business alignment, and the barriers faced during the adoption project. Using a qualitative methodology through action research, the study found the adoption of ITIL had a positive impact on service management. There is limited academic research …
A Comparison Of Relativistic And Reader-Writer Locking Approaches To Shared Data Access, Philip William Howard, Josh Triplett, Jonathan Walpole
A Comparison Of Relativistic And Reader-Writer Locking Approaches To Shared Data Access, Philip William Howard, Josh Triplett, Jonathan Walpole
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper explores the relationship between reader-writer locking and relativistic programming approaches to managing accesses to shared data. It demonstrates that by placing certain restrictions on writers, relativistic programming allows more concurrency than reader-writer locking while still providing the same isolation guarantees. Relativistic programming also allows for a straightforward model for reasoning about the correctness of programs that allow concurrent read-write accesses.

We describe AnonySense, a privacy-aware system for realizing pervasive applications based on collaborative, opportunistic sensing by personal mobile devices. AnonySense allows applications to submit sensing \emphtasks\/ to be distributed across participating mobile devices, later receiving verified, yet anonymized, sensor data \emphreports\/ back from the field, thus providing the first secure implementation of this participatory sensing model. We describe our security goals, threat model, and the architecture and protocols of AnonySense. We also describe how AnonySense can support extended security features that can be useful for different applications. We evaluate the security and feasibility of AnonySense through security analysis and prototype …

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications
Metaverses are immersive three-dimensional virtual worlds (VWs) where people interact with each other and their environment, using the metaphor of the real world but without its physical limitations. Unique technology capabilities of metaverses have the potential to enhance the conduct of virtual projects, but little is known about virtual worlds in this context. Virtual project teams struggle in meeting stated project outcomes due to challenges related to communication, shared understanding, and coordination. One way to address these challenges is to consider the use of emerging technologies, such as metaverses, to minimize the impact on virtual project teams. Applying a theoretical …

Increasing density based on bit size reduction is currently a main driving force for the development of data storage technologies. However, it is expected that all of the current available storage technologies might approach their physical limits in around 15 to 20 years due to miniaturization. To further advance the storage technologies, it is required to explore a new development trend that is different from density driven. One possible direction is to derive insights from biological counterparts. Unlike physical memories that have a single function of data storage, human memory is versatile. It contributes to functions of data storage, information …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Built upon the discretionary accrual-based earnings management framework, our paper develops a discretionary manipulation proxy to study the management of online reviews. We reveal that fraudulent review manipulation is a serious problem for 1) non-bestseller books; 2) books whose reviews are classified as not very helpful; 3) books that experience greater variability in the helpfulness of their online reviews; and 4) popular books as well as high-priced books. We also show that review management decreases with the passage of time. Just like fraudulent earnings management, manipulated online reviews reflect inauthentic information from which consumers might derive wrong valuation especially for …

Certificateless signcryption is a useful primitive which simultaneously provides the functionalities of certificateless encryption and certificateless signature. Recently, Liu et al. [15] proposed a new certificateless signcryption scheme, and claimed that their scheme is provably secure without random oracles in a strengthened security model, where the malicious-but-passive KGC attack is considered. Unfortunately, by giving concrete attacks, we indicate that Liu et al. certificateless signcryption scheme is not secure in this strengthened security model.

Applications on the smartphones are able to capitalize on the increasingly advanced hardware to provide a user experience reasonably impressive. However, the advancement of these applications are hindered battery lifetime of the smartphones. The battery technologies have a relatively low growth rate. Applications like mobile multiplayer games are especially power hungry as they maximize the use of the network, display and CPU resources. The PGTP, presented in this paper is aware of both the transport requirement of these multiplayer mobile games and the limitation posed by battery resource. PGTP dynamically controls the transport based on the criticality of game state …

Mining Iterative Generators And Representative Rules For Software Specification Discovery, David Lo, Jinyan Li, Limsoon Wong, Siau-Cheng Khoo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Billions of dollars are spent annually on software-related cost. It is estimated that up to 45 percent of software cost is due to the difficulty in understanding existing systems when performing maintenance tasks (i.e., adding features, removing bugs, etc.). One of the root causes is that software products often come with poor, incomplete, or even without any documented specifications. In an effort to improve program understanding, Lo et al. have proposed iterative pattern mining which outputs patterns that are repeated frequently within a program trace, or across multiple traces, or both. Frequent iterative patterns reflect frequent program behaviors that likely …

With the popularity of various social media applications, massive social images associated with high quality tags have been made available in many social media web sites nowadays. Mining social images on the web has become an emerging important research topic in web search and data mining. In this paper, we propose a machine learning framework for mining social images and investigate its application to automated image tagging. To effectively discover knowledge from social images that are often associated with multimodal contents (including visual images and textual tags), we propose a novel Unified Distance Metric Learning (UDML) scheme, which not only …

Tags of social images play a central role for text-based social image retrieval and browsing tasks. However, the original tags annotated by web users could be noisy, irrelevant, and often incomplete for describing the image contents, which may severely deteriorate the performance of text-based image retrieval models. In this paper, we aim to overcome the challenge of social tag ranking for a corpus of social images with rich user-generated tags by proposing a novel two-view learning approach. It can effectively exploit both textual and visual contents of social images to discover the complicated relationship between tags and images. Unlike the …

While tuple extraction for a given relation has been an active research area, its dual problem of pattern search- to find and rank patterns in a principled way- has not been studied explicitly. In this paper, we propose and address the problem of pattern search, in addition to tuple extraction. As our objectives, we stress reusability for pattern search and scalability of tuple extraction, such that our approach can be applied to very large corpora like the Web. As the key foundation, we propose a conceptual model PRDualRank to capture the notion of precision and recall for both tuples and …
