Modeling And Analyzing Faults To Improve Election Process Robustness, B I. Simidchieva, Sophie J. Engle, M Clifford, A C. Jones, S Peisert, M Bishop, L A. Clarke, L J. Osterweil

Computer Science

This paper presents an approach for continuous process improvement and illustrates its application to improving the robustness of election processes. In this approach, the Little-JIL process definition language is used to create a precise and detailed model of an election process. Given this process model and a potential undesirable event, or hazard, a fault tree is automatically derived. Fault tree analysis is then used to automatically identify combinations of failures that might allow the selected potential hazard to occur. Once these combinations have been identified, we iteratively improve the process model to increase the robustness of the election process against …

Analysis Of The Consistency Of A Mixed Integer Programming-Based Multi-Category Constrained Discriminant Model, J. Paul Brooks, Eva K. Lee Jan 2010

Analysis Of The Consistency Of A Mixed Integer Programming-Based Multi-Category Constrained Discriminant Model, J. Paul Brooks, Eva K. Lee

Statistical Sciences and Operations Research Publications

Classification is concerned with the development of rules for the allocation of observations to groups, and is a fundamental problem in machine learning. Much of previous work on classification models investigates two-group discrimination. Multi-category classification is less-often considered due to the tendency of generalizations of two-group models to produce misclassification rates that are higher than desirable. Indeed, producing “good” two-group classification rules is a challenging task for some applications, and producing good multi-category rules is generally more difficult. Additionally, even when the “optimal” classification rule is known, inter-group misclassification rates may be higher than tolerable for a given classification model. …

Exploration Of Dynamic Web Page Partitioning For Increased Web Page Delivery Performance, Brian Michael Krupp Jan 2010

Exploration Of Dynamic Web Page Partitioning For Increased Web Page Delivery Performance, Brian Michael Krupp

ETD Archive

The increasing use of the Internet and demand for real-time information has increased the amount of dynamic content generated residing in more complex distributed environments. The performance of delivering these web pages has been improved through more traditional techniques such as caching and newer techniques such as pre-fetching. In this research, we explore the dynamic partitioning of web page content using concurrent AJAX requests to improve web page delivery performance for resource intensive synchronous web content. The focus is more on enterprise web applications that exist in an environment such that a page's data and processing is not local to …

Seeing Is Believing: Body Motion Dominates In Multisensory Conversations, Cathy Ennis, Rachel Mcdonnell, Carol O'Sullivan Jan 2010

Seeing Is Believing: Body Motion Dominates In Multisensory Conversations, Cathy Ennis, Rachel Mcdonnell, Carol O'Sullivan

Articles

In many scenes with human characters, interacting groups are an important factor for maintaining a sense of realism. However, little is known about what makes these characters appear realistic. In this paper, we investigate human sensitivity to audio mismatches (i.e., when individuals’ voices are not matched to their gestures) and visual desynchronization (i.e., when the body motions of the individuals in a group are mis-aligned in time) in virtual human conversers. Using motion capture data from a range of both polite conversations and arguments, we conduct a series of perceptual experiments and determine some factors that contribute to the plausibility …

Skos And The Semantic Web: Knowledge Organization, Metadata, And Interoperability, Eric A. Robinson Jan 2010

Skos And The Semantic Web: Knowledge Organization, Metadata, And Interoperability, Eric A. Robinson

Other Topics

The Simplified Knowledge Organization System (SKOS) is a Semantic Web framework, based on the Resource Description Framework (RDF) for thesauri, classification schemes and simple ontologies. It allows for machine-actionable description of the structure of these knowledge organization systems (KOS) and provides an excellent tool for addressing interoperability and vocabulary control problems inherent to the rapidly expanding information environment of the Web. This paper discusses the foundations of the SKOS framework and reviews the literature on a variety of SKOS implementations. The limitations of SKOS that have been revealed through its broad application are addressed with brief attention to the proposed …

The Topology Of Incidence Pseudographs, Thomas R. James, Reinhard Klette Jan 2010

The Topology Of Incidence Pseudographs, Thomas R. James, Reinhard Klette

Mathematics Faculty Scholarship

Incidence pseudographs model a (re°exive and symmetric) inci- dence relation between sets of various dimensions, contained in a count- able family. Work by Klaus Voss in 1993 suggested that this general discrete model allows to introduce a topology, and some authors have done some studies into this direction in the past (also using alternative discrete models such as, for example, abstract complexes or orders on sets of cells). This paper provides a comprehensive overview about the topology of incidence pseudographs. This topology has various appli- cations, such as in modeling basic data in 2D or 3D digital picture analysis, or …

Kno.e.sis Publications

The advancements in computing have resulted in a boom of cheap, ubiquitous, connected mobile devices, as well as seemingly unlimited, utility style, pay as you go computing resources, commonly referred to as Cloud computing. However, taking full advantage of this mobile and cloud computing landscape, especially for the data intensive domains, has been hampered by the many heterogeneities that exist in the mobile space, as well as the Cloud space. Our research attempts to exploit the capabilities of the mobile and cloud landscape by introducing MobiCloud, an online toolkit to efficiently develop Cloud-mobile hybrid (CMH) applications. We define a CMH …

A Sketch-Based Language For Representing Uncertainty In The Locations Of Origin Of Herbarium Specimens, Barry Kronenfeld, Andrew Weeks Jan 2010

A Sketch-Based Language For Representing Uncertainty In The Locations Of Origin Of Herbarium Specimens, Barry Kronenfeld, Andrew Weeks

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

Uncertainty fields have been suggested as an appropriate model for retrospective georeferencing of herbarium specimens. Previous work has focused only on automated data capture methods, but techniques for manual data specification may be able to harness human spatial cognition skills to quickly interpret complex spatial propositions. This paper develops a formal modeling language by which location uncertainty fields can be derived from manually sketched features. The language consists of low-level specification of critical probability isolines from which a surface can be uniquely derived, and high-level specification of features and predicates from which low-level isolines can be derived. In a case …

Learning To Create Jazz Melodies Using Deep Belief Nets, Greg Bickerman '10, Sam Bosley, Peter Swire, Robert M. Keller

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We describe an unsupervised learning technique to facilitate automated creation of jazz melodic improvisation over chord sequences. Specifically we demonstrate training an artificial improvisation algorithm based on unsupervised learning using deep belief nets, a form of probabilistic neural network based on restricted Boltzmann machines. We present a musical encoding scheme and specifics of a learning and creational method. Our approach creates novel jazz licks, albeit not yet in real-time. The present work should be regarded as a feasibility study to determine whether such networks could be used at all. We do not claim superiority of this approach for pragmatically creating …

Avoiding Sanctions At The E-Discovery Meet-And-Confer In Common Law Countries, Milton Luoma, Vicki Luoma

Australian Digital Forensics Conference

The rules of civil procedure in common law countries have been amended to better deal with the requirements of electronic discovery. One of the key changes in case management is the scheduling of a meet-and-confer session where the parties to litigation must meet early in the case before any discovery procedures have begun to exchange information regarding the nature, location, formats, and pertinent facts regarding custody and control of a party’s electronically stored information (ESI). Failure to abide by the rules and participate in good faith at the meet-and-confer session can have dire consequences for the parties and lawyers involved. …

Using Transitivity With Nearest Neighbor To Reduce Error In Sample-Based Pearson Correlation Coefficients, Taylor Phillips Jan 2010

Using Transitivity With Nearest Neighbor To Reduce Error In Sample-Based Pearson Correlation Coefficients, Taylor Phillips

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients are a well-practiced quantification of linear dependence seen across many fields. When calculating a sample-based correlation coefficient, the accuracy of the estimation is dependent on the quality and quantity of the sample. Like all statistical models, these correlation coefficients can suffer from overfitting, which results in the representation of random error instead of an underlying trend.

In this paper, we discuss how Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficients can utilize information outside of the two items for which the correlation is being computed. By introducing a relationship with one or more additional items that meet specified criterion, our …

Assessing Traceability Of Software Engineering Artifacts, Senthil Karthikeyan Sundaram, Jane Huffman Hayes, Alex Dekhtyar, E. Ashlee Holbrook

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The generation of traceability links or traceability matrices is vital to many software engineering activities. It is also person-power intensive, time-consuming, error-prone, and lacks tool support. The activities that require traceability information include, but are not limited to, risk analysis, impact analysis, criticality assessment, test coverage analysis, and verification and validation of software systems. Information Retrieval (IR) techniques have been shown to assist with the automated generation of traceability links by reducing the time it takes to generate the traceability mapping. Researchers have applied techniques such as Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI), vector space retrieval, and probabilistic IR and have enjoyed …

Partnering Enhanced-Nlp With Semantic Analysis In Support Of Information Extraction, Hisham Assal, John Seng, Franz J. Kurfess, Emily Schwarz, Kym Pohl

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Information extraction using Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools focuses on extracting explicitly stated information from textual material. This includes Named Entity Recognition (NER), which produces entities and some of the relationships that may exist among them. Intelligent analysis requires examining the entities in the context of the entire document. While some of the relationships among the recognized entities may be preserved during extraction, the overall context of a document may not be preserved. In order to perform intelligent analysis on the extracted information, we provide an ontology, which describes the domain of the extracted information, in addition to rules that …
