With the prevalence of mobile devices that are equipped with wireless Internet capabilities and Global Positioning System (GPS) functionality, the creation and access of user-generated content are extended to users on the go. Such content are tied to real world objects, in the form of geospatial annotations, and it is only natural that these annotations are visualized using a map-based approach. However, viewing maps that are filled with annotations could hinder the serendipitous discovery of data, especially on the small screens of mobile devices. This calls for a need to manage the annotations. In this paper, we introduce a mobile …

Pagesense: Style-Wise Web Page Advertising, Lusong Li, Tao Mei, Xiang Niu, Chong-Wah Ngo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper presents an innovative style-wise advertising platform for web page. Web page “style” mainly refers to visual effects, such as color and layout. Unlike the most popular ad-network such as Google AdSense which needs publishers to change the original structure of their pages and define the position and style of the embedded ads manually, stylewise page advertising aims to automatically deliver styleconsistent ads at proper positions within the web page, without breaking the layout of the original page. Our system is motivated from the fact that almost 90% web pages contain blank regions without any content. Given a web …
The Implications Of How We Tag Software Artifacts: Exploring Different Schemata And Metadata For Tags, Christoph Treude, Margaret-Anne Storey
The Implications Of How We Tag Software Artifacts: Exploring Different Schemata And Metadata For Tags, Christoph Treude, Margaret-Anne Storey
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Social tagging has been adopted by software developers in various contexts from source code to work items and build definitions. While the success of tagging is usually attributed to the simplicity of tags, the implementation details of tagging systems vary significantly in terms of metadata, schemata and semantics. In this position paper, we argue that academia and industry should be aware of these differences and that we should start to examine their implications.

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
To facilitate product selection and purchase decisions on e-commerce Web sites, the presentation of product information is very important. In this research, the authors study how disposition styles influence users’ search patterns in product comparison services of e-commerce Web sites. The results show that people use relatively more feature paths and less product paths in vertical disposition style than horizontal disposition style. The findings also indicate that there are relatively more feature paths and less product paths in the first half than second half of the information search paths. This is consistent with Gensch’s two-stage choice model which suggests that …
Expression Invariant Face Recognition Using Shifted Phase-Encoded Joint Transform Correlation Technique, Trisha Ahmed
Expression Invariant Face Recognition Using Shifted Phase-Encoded Joint Transform Correlation Technique, Trisha Ahmed
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A new face recognition algorithm using a synthetic discriminant function based shifted phase-encoded fringe-adjusted joint transform correlation (SDF-SPFJTC) technique is proposed. The dark region in an input image is enhanced by using a nonlinear technique named ratio enhancement in gaussian neighborhood (REIGN). Histogram equalization and Gaussian smoothing are then performed to the enhanced face images and the synthetic discriminant function (SDF) image before they are subjected to the joint transform correlation process. The two distinct correlation peaks produced on extreme ends of the SPFJTC plane signifies the recognition of a potential target. A post processing step utilizes the peak-to-clutter ratio …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Nowadays, electronic payment system is an essential part of modern business. Credit cards or debit cards have been widely used for on-site or remote transactions, greatly reducing the need for inconvenient cash transactions. However, there have been a huge number of incidents of credit card frauds over the Internet due to the security weakness of electronic payment system. A number of solutions have been proposed in the past to prevent this problem, but most of them were inconvenient and did not satisfy the needs of cardholders and merchants at the same time.
In this thesis, we present a new secure …

Current intrusion detection systems (IDS) generate a large number of specific alerts, but typically do not provide actionable information. Compounding this problem is the fact that many alerts are false positive alerts. This paper applies the Cross Industry Standard Process for Data Mining (CRISP-DM) to develop an understanding of a host environment under attack. Data is generated by launching scans and exploits at a machine outfitted with a set of host-based forensic data collectors. Through knowledge discovery, features are selected to project human understanding of the attack process into the IDS model. By discovering relationships between the data collected and …

In this paper we propose novel algorithms for reconfiguring modular robots that are composed of n atoms. Each atom has the shape of a unit cube and can expand/contract each face by half a unit, as well as attach to or detach from faces of neighboring atoms. For universal reconfiguration, atoms must be arranged in 2×2×2 modules. We respect certain physical constraints: each atom reaches at most unit velocity and (via expansion) can displace at most one other atom. We require that one of the atoms can store a map of the target configuration. Our algorithms involve a total of …

Dsfs: Decentralized Security For Large Parallel File Systems, Zhongying Niu, Hong Jiang, Ke Zhou, Dan Feng, Tianming Yang, Dongliang Lei, Anli Chen
School of Computing: Technical Reports
This paper describes DSFS, a decentralized security system for large parallel file system. DSFS stores global access control lists (ACLs) in a centralized decisionmaking server and pushes pre-authorization lists (PALs) into storage devices. Thus DSFS allows users to flexibly set any access control policy for the global ACL or even change the global ACL system without having to upgrade the security code in their storage devices. With pre-authorization lists, DSFS enables a networkattached storage device to immediately authorize I/O, instead of demanding a client to acquire an authorization from a centralized authorization server at a crucial time. The client needs …
Topological Properties Of A Network Of Spiking Neurons In Face Image Recognition, Joo-Heon Shin
Topological Properties Of A Network Of Spiking Neurons In Face Image Recognition, Joo-Heon Shin
Theses and Dissertations
We introduce a novel system for recognition of partially occluded and rotated images. The system is based on a hierarchical network of integrate-and-fire spiking neurons with random synaptic connections and a novel organization process. The network generates integrated output sequences that are used for image classification. The network performed satisfactorily given appropriate topology, i.e. the number of neurons and synaptic connections, which corresponded to the size of input images. Comparison of Synaptic Plasticity Activity Rule (SAPR) and Spike Timing Dependant Plasticity (STDP) rules, used to update connections between the neurons, indicated that the SAPR gave better results and thus was …

Database Localization In A Test Environment, Thuy-Uyen Tran
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
One of the most significant challenges facing database software publishers is globalizing their products to tap into potentially profitable overseas business opportunities. The challenges of making products work overseas are many, ranging from budgeting for globalization projects to requiring developers to be skilled in localization. Over the years, software publishers have developed and implemented various tools and processes for globalization and localization. While there is considerable literature available on software development lifecycles and case studies, few studies have focused on globalization of database software. This thesis will examine the extent to which database publishers are using internationalization tools and processes …

Software Process Improvement (SPI) is a large area of expertise that deals with software development standard processes and is a progression of proven methods of process improvement from many different methodologies. Personal Software Process (PSP) and Team Software Process (TSP) complement the implementation of Capability Maturity Model Implementation (CMMI) and can be applied gradually from the individual, to the team, and then to the organization. These solutions from Carnegie Melon's Software Engineering Institute (SEI) are leading edge for the field of process improvement. Solutions like this consume many resources, are very complex, require years to implement, and can be costly. …
Tredd—A Database For Tandem Repeats Over The Edit Distance, Dina Sokol, Firat Atagun
Tredd—A Database For Tandem Repeats Over The Edit Distance, Dina Sokol, Firat Atagun
Publications and Research
A ‘tandem repeat’ in DNA is a sequence of two or more contiguous, approximate copies of a pattern of nucleotides. Tandem repeats are common in the genomes of both eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms. They are significant markers for human identity testing, disease diagnosis, sequence homology and population studies. In this article, we describe a new database, TRedD, which contains the tandem repeats found in the human genome. The database is publicly available online, and the software for locating the repeats is also freely available. The definition of tandem repeats used by TRedD is a new and innovative definition based upon …
The Use Of Olap Reporting Technology To Improve Patient Care Services Decision Making Within The University Health Center, Carlos M. Gonzalez
The Use Of Olap Reporting Technology To Improve Patient Care Services Decision Making Within The University Health Center, Carlos M. Gonzalez
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that it is feasible for the student health center to leverage existing clinical data in a data warehouse by using OLAP reporting in order to improve patient care and health care services decision making. Historically, University health care centers have relied mainly on operational data sources for critical health care decision making. These sources of data do not contain enough information to allow health officials to recognize trends or predict how future changes in health care services might vastly improve overall heath care. Four proof of concept artifacts are constructed through design …
Mapping System Management Of Two Erps (Oracle Ebusiness Suit And Peoplesoft), Eric Hernandez
Mapping System Management Of Two Erps (Oracle Ebusiness Suit And Peoplesoft), Eric Hernandez
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Due to the fact that Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) vendors provide business solutions to address similar business challenges, most ERP products have a lot of similar components and functionalities. Using these similar components and functionalities, ERP system management of one ERP product can be mapped to a different ERP product. In this particular case, E-Business Suite's (EBS) system management is mapped against PeopleSoft (PS). By having an EBS Administrator indirectly collaborate with a PS administrator, a system management mapping table linking the two ERP systems was established. By allowing an EBS Administrator handle PS systems using the mapping solution, the …
The Role Of Algorithmic Decision Processes In Decision Automation: Three Case Studies, Blake Edward Durtschi
The Role Of Algorithmic Decision Processes In Decision Automation: Three Case Studies, Blake Edward Durtschi
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis develops a new abstraction for solving problems in decision automation. Decision automation is the process of creating algorithms which use data to make decisions without the need for human intervention. In this abstraction, four key ideas/problems are highlighted which must be considered when solving any decision problem. These four problems are the decision problem, the learning problem, the model reduction problem, and the verification problem. One of the benefits of this abstraction is that a wide range of decision problems from many different areas can be broken down into these four “key” sub-problems. By focusing on these key …
Measuring Variations Of Mimicry By Means Of Prosodic Cues In Task-Based Scenarios And Conversational Speech, Brian Vaughan, Celine De Looze
Measuring Variations Of Mimicry By Means Of Prosodic Cues In Task-Based Scenarios And Conversational Speech, Brian Vaughan, Celine De Looze
Other resources
Here, we address the measurement of mimicry, that is when speakers’ speech variations look like parallel patterns.
As a definition of mimicry, we often read in the literature description such as mimicry is “The situation where the observed behaviours of two inter-actants although dissimilar at the start of the interaction are moving towards behavioral matching”. These types of descriptions imply that mimicry is a linear phenomenon and that speakers tend to imitate over time. However, it can be assumed, especially when studying spontaneous speech, that there are rather phases of mimicry and non-mimicry and that mimicry should be rather …
Model-Based Methods For Linking Web Service Choreography And Orchestration, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong, Geguang Pu, Tian Huat Tan
Model-Based Methods For Linking Web Service Choreography And Orchestration, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong, Geguang Pu, Tian Huat Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In recent years, many Web service composition languages have been proposed. Web service choreography describes collaboration protocols of cooperating Web service participants from a global view. Web service orchestration describes collaboration of the Web services in predefined patterns based on local decision about their interactions with one another at the message/execution level. In this work, we present model-based methods to close the gap between the two views. Building on the strength of model checking techniques, Web service choreography and orchestration are verified against temporal properties or against each other (to show that they are consistent). Specialized optimization techniques are developed …
Developing A Qualia-Based Multi-Agent Architecture For Use In Malware Detection, Bobby D. Birrer
Developing A Qualia-Based Multi-Agent Architecture For Use In Malware Detection, Bobby D. Birrer
Theses and Dissertations
Detecting network intruders and malicious software is a significant problem for network administrators and security experts. New threats are emerging at an increasing rate, and current signature and statistics-based techniques are not keeping pace. Intelligent systems that can adapt to new threats are needed to mitigate these new strains of malware as they are released. This research detects malware based on its qualia, or essence rather than its low-level implementation details. By looking for the underlying concepts that make a piece of software malicious, this research avoids the pitfalls of static solutions that focus on predefined bit sequence signatures or …
Handshaking Protocols And Jamming Mechanisms For Blind Rendezvous In A Dynamic Spectrum Access Environment, Aaron A. Gross
Handshaking Protocols And Jamming Mechanisms For Blind Rendezvous In A Dynamic Spectrum Access Environment, Aaron A. Gross
Theses and Dissertations
Blind frequency rendezvous is an important process for bootstrapping communications between radios without the use of pre-existing infrastructure or common control channel in a Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) environment. In this process, radios attempt to arrive in the same frequency channel and recognize each other’s presence in changing, under-utilized spectrum. This paper refines existing blind rendezvous techniques by introducing a handshaking algorithm for setting up communications once two radios have arrived in the same frequency channel. It then investigates the effect of different jamming techniques on blind rendezvous algorithms that utilize this handshake. The handshake performance is measured by determining …
Codifying Information Assurance Controls For Department Of Defense (Dod) Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (Scada) Systems (U), Eddie A. Mendezllovet
Codifying Information Assurance Controls For Department Of Defense (Dod) Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (Scada) Systems (U), Eddie A. Mendezllovet
Theses and Dissertations
Protecting DoD critical infrastructure resources and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems from cyber attacks is becoming an increasingly challenging task. DoD Information Assurance controls provide a sound framework to achieve an appropriate level of confidentiality, integrity, and availability. However, these controls have not been updated since 2003 and currently do not adequately address the security of DoD SCADA systems. This research sampled U.S. Air Force Civil Engineering subject matter experts representing eight Major Commands that manage and operate SCADA systems. They ranked 30 IA controls in three categories, and evaluated eight SCADA specific IA controls for inclusion into …
Developing An Effective And Efficient Real Time Strategy Agent For Use As A Computer Generated Force, Kurt Weissgerber
Developing An Effective And Efficient Real Time Strategy Agent For Use As A Computer Generated Force, Kurt Weissgerber
Theses and Dissertations
Computer Generated Forces (CGF) are used to represent units or individuals in military training and constructive simulation. The use of CGF significantly reduces the time and money required for effective training. For CGF to be effective, they must behave as a human would in the same environment. Real Time Strategy (RTS) games place players in control of a large force whose goal is to defeat the opponent. The military setting of RTS games makes them an excellent platform for the development and testing of CGF. While there has been significant research in RTS agent development, most of the developed agents …
Effects Of Channel Mismatches On Beamforming And Signal Detection, Christopher I. Allen
Effects Of Channel Mismatches On Beamforming And Signal Detection, Christopher I. Allen
Theses and Dissertations
Tuner gain measurements of a multichannel receiver are reported. A linear regression model is used to characterize the gain, as a function of channel number, tuner set-on frequency, and intermediate frequency. Residual errors of this model are characterized by a t distribution. Very strong autocorrelation of tuner gain at various frequencies is noted. Tuner performance from one channel to the next is diverse; several defects at specific frequencies are noted. The Wilcoxon signed rank test is used to test normality of tuner gain among devices; normality is rejected. Antenna directivity and phase pattern measurements are also reported. An antenna element …
A Bayesian Decision Theoretical Approach To Supervised Learning, Selective Sampling, And Empirical Function Optimization, James Lamond Carroll
A Bayesian Decision Theoretical Approach To Supervised Learning, Selective Sampling, And Empirical Function Optimization, James Lamond Carroll
Theses and Dissertations
Many have used the principles of statistics and Bayesian decision theory to model specific learning problems. It is less common to see models of the processes of learning in general. One exception is the model of the supervised learning process known as the "Extended Bayesian Formalism" or EBF. This model is descriptive, in that it can describe and compare learning algorithms. Thus the EBF is capable of modeling both effective and ineffective learning algorithms. We extend the EBF to model un-supervised learning, semi-supervised learning, supervised learning, and empirical function optimization. We also generalize the utility model of the EBF to …
Convenient Decentralized Authentication Using Passwords, Timothy W. Van Der Horst
Convenient Decentralized Authentication Using Passwords, Timothy W. Van Der Horst
Theses and Dissertations
Passwords are a very convenient way to authenticate. In terms of simplicity and portability they are very difficult to match. Nevertheless, current password-based login mechanisms are vulnerable to phishing attacks and typically require users to create and manage a new password for each of their accounts. This research investigates the potential for indirect/decentralized approaches to improve password-based authentication. Adoption of a decentralized authentication mechanism requires the agreement between users and service providers on a trusted third party that vouches for users' identities. Email providers are the de facto trusted third parties on the Internet. Proof of email address ownership is …
Coalition Formation Under Uncertainty, Daylond J. Hooper
Coalition Formation Under Uncertainty, Daylond J. Hooper
Theses and Dissertations
Many multiagent systems require allocation of agents to tasks in order to ensure successful task execution. Most systems that perform this allocation assume that the quantity of agents needed for a task is known beforehand. Coalition formation approaches relax this assumption, allowing multiple agents to be dynamically assigned. Unfortunately, many current approaches to coalition formation lack provisions for uncertainty. This prevents application of coalition formation techniques to complex domains, such as real-world robotic systems and agent domains where full state knowledge is not available. Those that do handle uncertainty have no ability to handle dynamic addition or removal of agents …
