Head In Space : A Head-Tracking Based Binaural Spatialization System, Luca A. Ludovico, Davide Andrea Mauro Phd, Dario Pizzamiglio

Computer Sciences and Electrical Engineering Faculty Research

This paper discusses a system capable of detecting the position of the listener through a head-tracking system and rendering a 3D audio environment by binaural spatialization. Head tracking is performed through face recognition algorithms which use a standard webcam, and the result is presented over headphones, like in other typical binaural applications. With this system users can choose an audio file to play, provide a virtual position for the source in an euclidean space, and then listen to the sound as if it is coming from that position. If they move their head, the signal provided by the system changes …

Semantics-Empowered Text Exploration For Knowledge Discovery, Delroy H. Cameron, Pablo N. Mendes, Amit P. Sheth, Victor Chan

Kno.e.sis Publications

The interaction paradigm offered by most contemporary Web Information Systems is a search-and-sift paradigm in which users manually seek information using hyperlinked documents. This paradigm is derived from a document-centric model that gives users minimal support for scanning through high volumes of text. We present a novel information exploration paradigm based on a data-centric view of corpora, along with a prototype implementation that demonstrates the value in content-driven navigation. We leverage semantic metadata to link data in documents by exploiting named relationships between entities. We also present utilities for gathering user generated navigation trails, critical for knowledge discovery. We discuss …

Contributors’ Preference In Open Source Software Usability: An Empirical Study, Arif Raza, Luiz Fernando Capretz

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

The fact that the number of users of open source software (OSS) is practically un-limited and that ultimately the software quality is determined by end user’s experience, makes the usability an even more critical quality attribute than it is for proprietary software. With the sharp increase in use of open source projects by both individuals and organizations, the level of usability and related issues must be addressed more seriously. The research model of this empirical investigation studies and establishes the relationship between the key usability factors from contributors’ perspective and OSS usability. A data set of 78 OSS contributors that …

Accurate And Stable Numerical Methods For Solving Micro Heat Transfer Models In An N-Carrier System In Spherical Coordinates, Di Zhao Apr 2010

Accurate And Stable Numerical Methods For Solving Micro Heat Transfer Models In An N-Carrier System In Spherical Coordinates, Di Zhao

Doctoral Dissertations

Energy exchange between electrons and phonons in metal provides the best example in describing non-equilibrium heating during the ultrafast transient. In times comparable to the thermalization and relaxation time of electrons and phonons, which are in the range of a few to several tens of picoseconds, heat continuously flows from hot electrons to cold phonons through mutual collisions. Consequently, electron temperature continuously decreases whereas phonon temperature continuously increases until thermal equilibrium is reached. Tien developed the well-known parabolic two-step model for describing the non-equilibrium heating in the electron-phonon system in 1992, and Tzou developed the parabolic model for the non-equilibrium …

Detecting Malicious Javascript, Matthew F. Der Apr 2010

Detecting Malicious Javascript, Matthew F. Der

Honors Theses

The increased use of the World Wide Web and JavaScript as a scripting language for Web pages have made JavaScript a popular attack vector for infecting users' machines with malware. Additionally, attackers often obfuscate their code to avoid detection, which heightens the challenge and complexity of automated defense systems. We present two analyses of malicious scripts and suggest how they could be extended into intrusion detection systems. For our analyses we use a sample of deobfuscated malicious and benign scripts collected from actual Web sites. First, using our malicious sample, we perform a manual analysis of attack signatures, identifying four …

Pretty Lights, Nicholas (Nick) Delmas, Matthew (Matt) Maniaci

Computer Engineering

Digital media players often include a visualization component that allows a user to watch a visualization synchronized to their music or videos. This project uses the visualization plugin API of an existing media playback program (WinAmp) but it displays its visuals using physical LED lights. Instead of outputting visuals to the computer screen, data is sent over USB to a micro controller that runs the LED lights. This project aims to give users a more visceral visual experience than traditional visualizations on the computer screen.

System Design And Algorithmic Development For Computational Steering In Distributed Environments, Qishi Wu, Michelle Zhu, Yi Gu, Nageswara S.V. Rao

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Supporting visualization pipelines over wide-area networks is critical to enabling large-scale scientific applications that require visual feedback to interactively steer online computations. We propose a remote computational steering system that employs analytical models to estimate the cost of computing and communication components and optimizes the overall system performance in distributed environments with heterogeneous resources. We formulate and categorize the visualization pipeline configuration problems for maximum frame rate into three classes according to the constraints on node reuse or resource sharing, namely no, contiguous, and arbitrary reuse. We prove all three problems to be NP-complete and present heuristic approaches based on …

Associative Pattern Mining For Supervised Learning, Harpreet Singh Apr 2010

Associative Pattern Mining For Supervised Learning, Harpreet Singh

Doctoral Dissertations

The Internet era has revolutionized computational sciences and automated data collection techniques, made large amounts of previously inaccessible data available and, consequently, broadened the scope of exploratory computing research. As a result, data mining, which is still an emerging field of research, has gained importance because of its ability to analyze and discover previously unknown, hidden, and useful knowledge from these large amounts of data. One aspect of data mining, known as frequent pattern mining, has recently gained importance due to its ability to find associative relationships among the parts of data, thereby aiding a type of supervised learning known …

A Social Network Based Study Of Software Team Dynamics, Subhajit Datta, Vikrant S. Kaulgoud, Vibhu Saujanya Sharma, Nishant Kumar

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Members of software project teams have specific roles and responsibilities which are formally defined during project inception or at the start of a life cycle activity. Often, the team structure undergoes spontaneous changes as delivery deadlines draw near and critical tasks have to be completed. Some members -- depending on their skill or seniority -- need to take on more responsibilities, while others end up being peripheral to the project's execution. We posit that this kind of ad hoc reorganization of a team's structure can be discerned from the project's bug tracker. In this paper, we extract a social network …

Neural Network Output Feedback Control Of Robot Formations, Travis Dierks, Sarangapani Jagannathan Apr 2010

Neural Network Output Feedback Control Of Robot Formations, Travis Dierks, Sarangapani Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a combined kinematic/torque output feedback control law is developed for leader follower-Based formation control using backstepping to accommodate the dynamics of the robots and the formation in contrast with kinematic-Based formation controllers. a neural network (NN) is introduced to approximate the dynamics of the follower and its leader using online weight tuning. Furthermore, a novel NN observer is designed to estimate the linear and angular velocities of both the follower robot and its leader. It is shown, by using the Lyapunov theory, that the errors for the entire formation are uniformly ultimately bounded while relaxing the separation …

Providing Location Security In Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks, Gongjun Yan Apr 2010

Providing Location Security In Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks, Gongjun Yan

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Location is fundamental information in Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs). Almost all VANET applications rely on location information. Therefore it is of importance to ensure location information integrity, meaning that location information is original (from the generator), correct (not bogus or fabricated) and unmodified (value not changed). We present validation mechanisms to provide location integrity for VANETs. In the initial mechanism, we assume that all vehicles are equipped with a radar, a GPS receiver, and a transceiver. Since radar has a limited radar range and transceiver has a limited transmission range, we build network cells as a security unit as well …

A Genetic Algorithm Approach For Optimized Routing, Pavithra Gudur Apr 2010

A Genetic Algorithm Approach For Optimized Routing, Pavithra Gudur

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Genetic Algorithms find several applications in a variety of fields, such as engineering, management, finance, chemistry, scheduling, data mining and so on, where optimization plays a key role. This technique represents a numerical optimization technique that is modeled after the natural process of selection based on the Darwinian principle of evolution. The Genetic Algorithm (GA) is one among several optimization techniques and attempts to obtain the desired solution by generating a set of possible candidate solutions or populations. These populations are then compared and the best solutions from the set are retained. Subsequently, new candidate solutions are produced, and the …

Cs 740: Algorithms, Complexity And The Theory Of Computability, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science & Engineering Syllabi

What does it mean to say that some computational problem is intrinsically more difficult than some other problem? How can I claim that I have found a good algorithmic solution? The study of these questions gives rise to an area of Theoretical Computer Science called Complexity Theory, which is based on a systematic and thorough formal study of the complexity of problems with respect to their algorithmic solvability, using Turing machines as main conceptual tool. In this class, we will understand how problem and algorithmic complexity is measured, and discuss some of the main complexity classes arising from this study. …
