Geographic Information Systems utilize data that has location information associated with it – a location such as an address or latitude and longitude. This leads to the ability to solve problems with an underlying spatial focus. Whether real-time sensing of scientific data, conducting market analysis, understanding socio-economic population trends, conducting epidemiological studies, or teaching kids how to better understand their world, GIS systems provide a unique way for students, faculty, researchers, and professionals from a variety of disciplines to understand, analyze, and visualize data in different ways.

Automatic Extraction From And Reasoning About Genealogical Records: A Prototype, Charla Jean Woodbury
Automatic Extraction From And Reasoning About Genealogical Records: A Prototype, Charla Jean Woodbury
Theses and Dissertations
Family history research on the web is increasing in popularity, and many competing genealogical websites host large amounts of data-rich, unstructured, primary genealogical records. It is labor-intensive, however, even after making these records machine-readable, for humans to make these records easily searchable. What we need are computer tools that can automatically produce indices and databases from these genealogical records and can automatically identify individuals and events, determine relationships, and put families together. We propose here a possible solution—specialized ontologies, built specifically for extracting information from primary genealogical records, with expert logic and rules to infer genealogical facts and assemble relationship …

The LOD cloud has a potential for applicability in many AI-related tasks, such as open domain question answering, knowledge discovery, and the Semantic Web. An important prerequisite before the LOD cloud can enable these goals is allowing its users (and applications) to effectively pose queries to and retrieve answers from it. However, this prerequisite is still an open problem for the LOD cloud and has restricted it to 'merely more data.' To transform the LOD cloud from 'merely more data' to 'semantically linked data' there are plenty of open issues which should be addressed. We believe this transformation of the …
A Security Assessment Of Mobikey For Remote Access, Joseph Brooks
A Security Assessment Of Mobikey For Remote Access, Joseph Brooks
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Today, it is very common for employees to need to work when outside of the office. For various reasons, it's important that they be able to work anytime and anywhere. However, this raises security concerns about how this is accomplished. There are many options, such as virtual private networks (VPNs) and remote desktop solutions, but each comes with its own risks. A newer option is the MobiKEY from Route1, which allows users to connect to their work resources from anywhere. Route1 touts the MobiKEY, powered by MobiNET, as a much more secure method of remote access. How does it stack …
Deterministic, Efficient Variation Of Circuit Components To Improve Resistance To Reverse Engineering, Daniel F. Koranek
Deterministic, Efficient Variation Of Circuit Components To Improve Resistance To Reverse Engineering, Daniel F. Koranek
Theses and Dissertations
This research proposes two alternative methods for generating semantically equivalent circuit variants which leave the circuit's internal structure pseudo-randomly determined. Component fusion deterministically selects subcircuits using a component identification algorithm and replaces them using a deterministic algorithm that generates canonical logic forms. Component encryption seeks to alter the semantics of individual circuit components using an encoding function, but preserves the overall circuit semantics by decoding signal values later in the circuit. Experiments were conducted to examine the performance of component fusion and component encryption against representative trials of subcircuit selection-and-replacement and Boundary Blurring, two previously defined methods for circuit obfuscation. …
An Application Of Automated Theorem Provers To Computer System Security: The Schematic Protection Model, Mitchell D.I. Hirschfeld
An Application Of Automated Theorem Provers To Computer System Security: The Schematic Protection Model, Mitchell D.I. Hirschfeld
Theses and Dissertations
The Schematic Protection Model is specified in SAL and theorems about Take-Grant and New Technology File System schemes are proven. Arbitrary systems can be specified in SPM and analyzed. This is the first known automated analysis of SPM specifications in a theorem prover. The SPM specification was created in such a way that new specifications share the underlying framework and are configurable within the specifications file alone. This allows new specifications to be created with ease as demonstrated by the four unique models included within this document. This also allows future users to more easily specify models without recreating the …
Developing A Hybrid Virtualization Platform Design For Cyber Warfare And Simulation, Kyle E. Stewart
Developing A Hybrid Virtualization Platform Design For Cyber Warfare And Simulation, Kyle E. Stewart
Theses and Dissertations
Virtualization is a technique used to model and simulate the cyber domain, as well as train and educate. Different types of virtualization techniques exist that each support a unique set of benefits and requirements. This research proposes a novel design that incorporates host and network virtualization concepts for a cyber warfare training platform. At the host level, hybrid virtualization combines full and operating system virtualization techniques in order to leverage the benefits and minimize the drawbacks of each individual technique. Network virtualization allows virtual machines to connect in flexible topologies, but it also incurs additional processing overhead. Quantitative analysis falls …

Hidra: Hierarchical Inter-Domain Routing Architecture, Bryan Clevenger, Daniel Nelson, John M. Bellardo
Computer Science and Software Engineering
The size of the Internet’s forwarding table is growing rapidly, generating concerns about the ability for high performance routing equipment to economically keep pace. The primary contributors to this growth are end site multihoming, traffic engineering, and in the foreseeable future, IPv6 deployment. This paper presents HIDRA, a hierarchal network architecture designed to reduce both the immediate size of the Internet’s forwarding table as well as its growth rate while maximizing compatibility with the existing In ternet architecture. This includes the ability to use exist ing high performance routers, existing routing protocols, and existing number allocation policies. HIDRA is prototyped …

Cognitive Load Of Rating Scales, E. Isaac G. Sparling, Shilad Sen
Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Honors Projects
Why does Netflix.com use star ratings, Digg.com use up/down votes and Face- book use a “like” but not a “dislike” button? In this paper, we extend existing research on rating scales with findings from an experiment we ran to measure the cognitive load users experience while rating. In this paper, we analyze the cognitive load and time required by different rating scales. Our analysis draws upon 14,000 movie and product ratings we collected from 348 users through an online survey. In the survey, we measured the speed and cognitive load users ex- perience under four scales: unary (‘like it’), binary …

Standard webmetrics tools record the IP address of users’ computers, thereby providing fodder for analyses of their geographical location, and for understanding the impact of e-learning and teaching. Here we describe how two web-based educational systems were engineered to collect geo-referenced data. This is followed by a description of joining these data with demographic and educational datasets for the United States, and mapping different datasets using geographic information system (GIS) techniques to visually display their relationships. Results from statistical analyses of these relationships that highlight areas of significance are given.

Enabled by a shared Information Technology platform, social service agencies can collaborate and share information to better serve clients holistically, improve the agency's ability to raise funds, provide better statistics to stake holders, and predict social services needed in the future. Social service agencies have many barriers to overcome before successful collaboration such as security, client confidentiality, choosing a software stack, cost, and agreement among the agencies on what information they can share. This paper presents practical methodologies that can be used towards the development of an IT platform to support the collaboration of social service agencies in a local …
On The Use Of Cartographic Projections In Visualizing Phylogenetic Treespace, Mark J. Clement, Quinn O. Snell, Kenneth Sundberg
On The Use Of Cartographic Projections In Visualizing Phylogenetic Treespace, Mark J. Clement, Quinn O. Snell, Kenneth Sundberg
Faculty Publications
Phylogenetic analysis is becoming an increasingly important tool for biological research. Applications include epidemiological studies, drug development, and evolutionary analysis. Phylogenetic search is a known NP-Hard problem. The size of the data sets which can be analyzed is limited by the exponential growth in the number of trees that must be considered as the problem size increases. A better understanding of the problem space could lead to better methods, which in turn could lead to the feasible analysis of more data sets. We present a definition of phylogenetic tree space and a visualization of this space that shows significant exploitable …

Evaluation Of Dnssec In Microsoft Windows And Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2, Christopher Hair
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
The Domain Name System (DNS) provides important name resolution services on the Internet. The DNS has been found to have security flaws which have the potential to undermine the reliability of many Internet-based systems. DNS Security Extensions (DNSSEC) offers a long-term solution these DNS security flaws. However, DNSSEC adoption has been slow because it is challenging to deploy and administer. DNSSEC has also been criticized for not being an "end-toend" solution. Microsoft included support for DNSSEC in its latest operating systems, Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7. This thesis concluded that DNSSEC features in Windows Server 2008 R2 and …

Virtual Container Attestation: Customized Trusted Containers For On-Demand Computing., Katelin A. Bailey
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
In today's computing environment, data is moving to central locations and most computers are merely used to access the data. Today is the era of cloud computing and distributed computing, where users have control over neither data nor computation. As this trend continues there is an increasing frequency of mutually distrustful parties being forced to interact and share resources with each other in potentially dangerous situations. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a means of creating trust between two entities, or at the very least providing some means of determining the trust level of a given machine. Current approaches …
Creating Large Disturbances In The Power Grid: Methods Of Attack After Cyber Infiltration, Loren D. Sands-Ramshaw
Creating Large Disturbances In The Power Grid: Methods Of Attack After Cyber Infiltration, Loren D. Sands-Ramshaw
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
Researchers are pursuing methods of securing the cyber aspect of the U.S. power grid, one of the country's most critical infrastructures. An attacker who is able to infiltrate an Energy Management System (EMS) can instruct elements of the grid to function improperly or can skew the state information received by the control programs or operators. In addition, a cyber attack can combine multiple attacks and affect many physical locations at once. A study of the possible adverse effects an attack could generate can underline the urgency of improving grid security, contribute to a roadmap and priority list for security researchers, …
Block Sensitivity Versus Sensitivity, Karn Seth
Block Sensitivity Versus Sensitivity, Karn Seth
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
Sensitivity and block sensitivity are useful and well-studied measures of computational complexity, but in spite of their similarities, the largest possible gap between them is still unknown. Rubinstein showed that this gap must be at least quadratic, and Kenyon and Kutin showed that it is at worst exponential, but many strongly suspect that the gap is indeed quadratic, or at worst polynomial. Our work shows that for a large class of functions, which includes Rubinstein's function, the quadratic gap between sensitivity and block sensitivity is the best we can possibly do.

An Organizational Maturity Model Of Software Product Line Engineering, Faheem Ahmed, Luiz Fernando Capretz
Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications
Software product line engineering is an inter-disciplinary concept. It spans the dimensions of business, architecture, process, and the organization. Some of the potential benefits of this approach include cost reduction, improvements in product quality and a decrease in product development time. The increasing popularity of software product line engineering in the software industry necessitates a process maturity evaluation methodology. Accordingly, this paper presents an organizational maturity model of software product line engineering for evaluating the maturity of organizational dimension. The model assumes that organizational theories, behavior, and management play a critical role in the institutionalization of software product line engineering …

Planning a quarterly course schedule is a difficult and laborious process for university students which must be repeated every quarter. Students are expected to determine which courses to take based on a large and complex set of requirement criteria. Most academic scheduling research has focused on faculty availability and desires. This project attempts to address the needs of students for whom no quarterly course schedule planning tool is widely available. A Java Swing-based application is described that allows students to create a graphical quarter-by-quarter visualization of the courses they plan to take. The application also accepts a list of graduation …

Automatic Junit Creation Tool: An Exploration In High Level Process Driven Automatic Test Case Creation, William Whitney
Computer Science and Software Engineering
Many software developers do not enjoy writing unit test code. Often their excuses range from testing is slow to testing is hard. Yet perhaps test derivation has to be neither. The aim of this senior project is to examine the current state of unit test creation for the Java programming language. In particular, inefficiencies with the JUnit test framework regarding test derivation are analyzed. Ultimately, a JUnit test creation tool is created that provides a high-level process for test derivation.

IsoGene is an R package for the analysis of dose-response microarray experiments to identify gene or subsets of genes with a mono tone relationship between the gene expression and the doses. Several testing procedures (i.e., the likelihood ratio test, Williams, Marcus, the M, and Modified M), that take into account the order restriction of the means with respect to the increasing doses are implemented in the package. The inference is based on resampling methods, both permutations and the Significance Analysis of Microarrays (SAM).
