Multi-Robot Boundary Tracking With Phase And Workload Balancing, Michael Boardman, Jeremy Edmonds, Kyle Francis, Christopher M. Clark Oct 2010

Multi-Robot Boundary Tracking With Phase And Workload Balancing, Michael Boardman, Jeremy Edmonds, Kyle Francis, Christopher M. Clark

Computer Science and Software Engineering

This paper discusses the use of a cooperative multiple robot system as applied to distributed tracking and sampling of a boundary edge. Within this system the boundary edge is partitioned into subsegments, each allocated to a particular robot such that workload is balanced across the robots. Also, to minimize the time between sampling local areas of the boundary edge, it may be desirable to minimize the difference between each robots progression (i.e. phase) along its allocated sub segment of the edge. The paper introduces a new distributed controller that handles both workload and phase balancing. Simulation results are used to …

Histogram Based Video Segmentation And Key Frame Extraction On Som And Dft, Songul Cecen Oct 2010

Histogram Based Video Segmentation And Key Frame Extraction On Som And Dft, Songul Cecen

Theses and Dissertations

A new key-frame extraction method, called "index-based retrieval (I-Base)", is presented based on DCT and SOM. It allows user to quickly find particular point within a certain domain and/or determine if the domain is relevant to the need. I-Base forms a hierarchy from the uniquely represented shots by using frames. Eventually the use of hierarchy leads to the generation of video content indexing. Doing so allows the user to map only the relevant section in the source with the request issued. The idea of 'just request-to-response mapping' prevents not only the unwanted information retrieval, but also saves time and bandwidth. …

A Data Warehouse Solution Emphasizing The Use In Geographic Information Systems, Catherine Carpenter Oct 2010

A Data Warehouse Solution Emphasizing The Use In Geographic Information Systems, Catherine Carpenter

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This paper will explore use of a data warehouse solution for an electric utility that generates and transmits power across four US states. The pseudonym "Utility" will be used to represent the electric utility for security reasons. At Utility "X" several systems store information that is managed in silos that, in some cases, operate on proprietary database formats. This type of usage is identified as a barrier in the development of an enterprise-wide data source. A data warehouse can ultimately help to bridge the Utility "X" information gap, and provide added accessibility for the company to further develop technology, such …

Pixel Based Note Taking Through Perceptual Structure Inference, Mitchell Kent Harris Oct 2010

Pixel Based Note Taking Through Perceptual Structure Inference, Mitchell Kent Harris

Theses and Dissertations

Knowledge workers need effective annotation tools to assimilate information. Unfortunately many digital annotators are limited in the range of document that they accept. Those that do accept many different documents do so by converting documents to images, thus losing any awareness about the original content of the document. We introduce a digital note taker that is both universal and content aware. By constructing a hierarchical context tree of document images, the structure of a document is inferred from the image. This hierarchical context tree is shown to be useful by demonstrating how it facilitates selection of document elements, reflowing documents …

Non-Invasive Prenatal Detection Of Trisomy 21 Using Tandem Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms, Sujana Ghanta, Michael Mitchell, Mary Ames, Mats Hidestrand, Pippa Simpson, Mary Goetsch, William Thilly, Craig Struble, Aoy Tomita-Mitchell

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Background: Screening tests for Trisomy 21 (T21), also known as Down syndrome, are routinely performed for the majority of pregnant women. However, current tests rely on either evaluating non-specific markers, which lead to false negative and false positive results, or on invasive tests, which while highly accurate, are expensive and carry a risk of fetal loss. We outline a novel, rapid, highly sensitive, and targeted approach to non-invasively detect fetal T21 using maternal plasma DNA.

Methods and Findings: Highly heterozygous tandem Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) sequences on chromosome 21 were analyzed using High-Fidelity PCR and Cycling Temperature Capillary …

Saving Space And Time Using Index Merging, Lubomir Stanchev, Grant Weddell Oct 2010

Saving Space And Time Using Index Merging, Lubomir Stanchev, Grant Weddell

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Managing digital information is an integral part of our society. Efficient access to data is supported through the use of indices. Although indices can reduce the cost of answering queries, they have two significant drawbacks: they take additional storage space and their maintenance can become a bottleneck. We address these challenges by introducing search data structures that reduce the need for storing redundant data among indices. Our experimental results with the main-memory version of these data structures show that our approach can reduce by half the storage space and can improve performance, where the highest performance improvement is achieved for …

Technical Target Setting In Qfd For Web Service Systems Using An Artificial Neural Network, Lianzhang Zhu, Xiaoqing Frank Liu Oct 2010

Technical Target Setting In Qfd For Web Service Systems Using An Artificial Neural Network, Lianzhang Zhu, Xiaoqing Frank Liu

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

There are at least two challenges with quality management of service-oriented architecture based web service systems: 1) how to link its technical capabilities with customer's needs explicitly to satisfy customers' functional and nonfunctional requirements; and 2) how to determine targets of web service design attributes. Currently, the first issue is not addressed and the second one is dealt with subjectively. Quality Function Deployment (QFD), a quality management system, has found its success in improving quality of complex products although it has not been used for developing web service systems. In this paper, we analyze requirements for web services and their …

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The accurate mapping of reads that span splice junctions is a critical component of all analytic techniques that work with RNA-seq data. We introduce a second generation splice detection algorithm, MapSplice, whose focus is high sensitivity and specificity in the detection of splices as well as CPU and memory efficiency. MapSplice can be applied to both short (<75 bp) and long reads (≥75 bp). MapSplice is not dependent on splice site features or intron length, consequently it can detect novel canonical as well as non-canonical splices. MapSplice leverages the quality and diversity of read alignments of a given splice to increase accuracy. We demonstrate that MapSplice achieves higher sensitivity and specificity than TopHat and SpliceMap on a set of simulated RNA-seq data. Experimental studies also support the accuracy of the algorithm. Splice junctions derived from eight breast cancer RNA-seq datasets recapitulated the extensiveness of alternative splicing on a global level as well as the differences between molecular subtypes of breast cancer. These combined results indicate that MapSplice is a highly accurate algorithm for the alignment of RNA-seq reads to splice junctions. Suitability Review Of Common Synchronous, Live Online-Classroom Tools, Arnold Hensman Oct 2010

Suitability Review Of Common Synchronous, Live Online-Classroom Tools, Arnold Hensman

Conference Papers

While virtual learning environments (VLEs) such as Moodle and WebCT are now ubiquitous in most higher education institutes, live synchronous virtual classroom software is merely gaining in popularity. The first online meeting tools were tailored towards business requirements for remotely held meetings rather than educational purposes. The recent expansion of virtual classroom tools specific to education has changed this. Such software offers the standard features of streamed voice and video, yet purposely provides an array of additional features specifically designed to conduct classes online. While VLEs work optimally as a compliment to standard courses, Virtual-classrooms such as Adobe Connect Pro …

A Framework For The Comparison Of Virtual Classroom Systems, Daniel Mcsweeney Oct 2010

A Framework For The Comparison Of Virtual Classroom Systems, Daniel Mcsweeney

Conference Papers

The increase in demand for open and distance learning has resulted in many higher education providers investing in virtual classroom systems. These systems can be an essential component in the delivery of flexible and online courses. While many institutions correctly place a greater emphasis on the pedagogical development of flexible courses, poor selection or implementation of virtual classroom software can reduce the pedagogical effectiveness of such courses and in some cases render them unworkable for both lecturing staff and students.

Changes in vendor offerings, the continual evolution of end user technology, developments in mobile devices and improvements in internet infrastructure …

A Study Of Wireless Network Security, Ningwei Sun Oct 2010

A Study Of Wireless Network Security, Ningwei Sun

All Capstone Projects

I intend to make a survey in wireless data security since wireless networks are very common, both for organizations and individuals. Many laptop computers have wireless cards pre-installed. The ability to enter a wireless network has great benefits. However, wireless networking has many security issues. Hackers have found wireless networks relatively easy to break into, and even use wireless technology to crack into wired network. As a result, it's very important that enterprises define effective wireless security policies that guard against unauthorized access to important resources.

My survey research may involve these following aspects: wireless network architecture, data security in …

While there have been research efforts in organizing largescale web videos into topics, efficient browsing of web video topics remains a challenging problem not yet addressed. The related issues include how to efficiently browse and track the evolution of topics and eventually locate the videos of interest. In this paper, we introduce a novel interface for visualizing video topics as evolution trajectories. The trajectory visualization is capable of highlighting milestone events and depicting the topical hotness over time. The interface also allows multi-level browsing from topics to events and to videos, resulting in search exploration could be more efficiently conducted …

Mining Collaboration Patterns From A Large Developer Network, Didi Surian, David Lo, Ee Peng Lim Oct 2010

Mining Collaboration Patterns From A Large Developer Network, Didi Surian, David Lo, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this study, we extract patterns from a large developer collaborations network extracted from Source Forge. Net at high and low level of details. At the high level of details, we extract various network-level statistics from the network. At the low level of details, we extract topological sub-graph patterns that are frequently seen among collaborating developers. Extracting sub graph patterns from large graphs is a hard NP-complete problem. To address this challenge, we employ a novel combination of graph mining and graph matching by leveraging network-level properties of a developer network. With the approach, we successfully analyze a snapshot of …

Electroencephalogram Artifact Removal Using A Wavelet Neural Network, Hoang-Anh T. Nguyen Oct 2010

Electroencephalogram Artifact Removal Using A Wavelet Neural Network, Hoang-Anh T. Nguyen

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A wavelet neural network (WNN) technique rs developed for electroencephalogram (EEG) artifact removal without electrooculographic (EOG) recordings. The algorithm combines the universal approximation characteristics of neural networks and the time/frequency property of wavelet, where the neural network was trained on a simulated dataset with known ground truths. The contribution of this thesis is two-fold. First, many EEG artifact removal algorithms, including regression based methods, require reference EOG signals, which are not always available. To remove EEG ai1ifacts, a WNN tries to learn the characteristics of the artifacts first and does not need reference EOG signals once trained. Second, WNNs are …

Detecting Photographic Composites Of Famous People, Eric Kee, Hany Farid Oct 2010

Detecting Photographic Composites Of Famous People, Eric Kee, Hany Farid

Computer Science Technical Reports

Photos are commonly falsified by compositing two or more people into a single image. We describe how such composites can be detected by estimating a camera's intrinsic parameters. Differences in these parameters across the image are then used as evidence of tampering. Expanding on earlier work, this approach is more applicable to low-resolution images, but requires a reference image of each person in the photo as they are directly facing the camera. When considering composites of famous people, such a reference photo is easily obtained from an on-line image search.
