The use of image based information exchange has grown rapidly over the years in terms of both e-to-e image storage and transmission and in terms of maintaining paper documents in electronic form. Further, with the dramatic improvements in the quality of COTS (Commercial-Off-The-Shelf) printing and scanning devices, the ability to counterfeit electronic and printed documents has become a widespread problem. Consequently, there has been an increasing demand to develop digital watermarking techniques which can be applied to both electronic and printed images (and documents) that can be authenticated, prevent unauthorized copying of their content and, in the case of printed …

On The Reliability Of Wireless Fingerprinting Using Clock Skews, Chrisil Arackaparambil, Sergey Bratus, Anna Shubina, David Kotz
Computer Science Technical Reports
Determining whether a client station should trust an access point is a known problem in wireless security. Traditional approaches to solving this problem resort to cryptography. But cryptographic exchange protocols are complex and therefore induce potential vulnerabilities in themselves. We show that measurement of clock skews of access points in an 802.11 network can be useful in this regard, since it provides fingerprints of the devices. Such fingerprints can be used to establish the first point of trust for client stations wishing to connect to an access point. Fingerprinting can also be used in the detection of fake access points. …
A Deadline-Driven Epidemic Data Collection Protocol Suitable For Tracking Interpersonnel Rendezvous, Avranil Tah
A Deadline-Driven Epidemic Data Collection Protocol Suitable For Tracking Interpersonnel Rendezvous, Avranil Tah
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This thesis describes a peer-to-peer wireless data collection algorithm that uses epidemic communication to propagate time-sensitive sequentially sampled data records from sensors toward infrastructure connected upload stations via mobile data mules. These records are labeled with sequence numbers and delivery deadlines, and are transmitted in sequential order. Delivery deadlines enable transmission prioritization and trigger alarms warning of violations.
The sequential ordering of records simplifies the protocols transmission-control and garbage collection mechanisms: only two monotonically increasing scalar sequence indices associated with a particular sensor must be exchanged between peers prior to selecting which records need to be communicated. One of these …
Transfer Learning Techniques For Deep Neural Nets, Steven M. Gutstein
Transfer Learning Techniques For Deep Neural Nets, Steven M. Gutstein
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Inductive learners seek meaningful features within raw input. Their purpose is to accurately categorize, explain or extrapolate from this input. Relevant features for one task are frequently relevant for related tasks. Reuse of previously learned data features to help master new tasks is known as &lsquo transfer learning &rsquo. People use this technique to learn more quickly and easily. However, machine learning tends to occur from scratch.
In this thesis, two machine learning techniques are developed, that use transfer learning to achieve significant accuracy for recognition tasks with extremely small training sets and, occasionally, no task specific training. These methods …
The Extent Of Clientelism In Irish Politics: Evidence From Classifying Dáil Questions On A Local-National Dimension, Sarah Jane Delany, Richard Sinnott, Niall O'Reilly
The Extent Of Clientelism In Irish Politics: Evidence From Classifying Dáil Questions On A Local-National Dimension, Sarah Jane Delany, Richard Sinnott, Niall O'Reilly
Conference papers
The availability of the full text of Irish parliamentary questions offers opportunities for using machine learning techniques to examine the currently much discussed role of elected representatives (TDs) in the Irish parliamentary system. Bluntly, are TDs mainly national legislators or “constituency messenger boys”? This paper presents an initial investigation into the use of automated text classification techniques to categorise parliamentary questions from 1922 up to 2008 as national or local. The approach uses a bag of words representation, standard feature reduction methods and an SVM classifier. Initial results show there is very little evidence in the corpus of parliamentary questions …

Clustering Weblogs On The Basis Of A Topic Detection Method, Fernando Perez-Tellez, David Pinto, John Cardiff, Paolo Rosso
Conference Papers
In recent years we have seen a vast increase in the volume of information published on weblog sites and also the creation of new web technologies where people discuss actual events. The need for automatic tools to organize this massive amount of information is clear, but the particular characteristics of weblogs such as shortness and overlapping vocabulary make this task difficult. In this work, we present a novel methodology to cluster weblog posts according to the topics discussed therein. This methodology is based on a generative probabilistic model in conjunction with a Self-Term Expansion methodology. We present our results which …
A Study Of Accomodation Of Prosodic And Temporal Features In Spoken Dialogues In View Of Speech Technology Applications, Spyridon Kousidis
A Study Of Accomodation Of Prosodic And Temporal Features In Spoken Dialogues In View Of Speech Technology Applications, Spyridon Kousidis
Doctoral
Inter-speaker accommodation is a well-known property of human speech and human interaction in general. Broadly it refers to the behavioural patterns of two (or more) interactants and the effect of the (verbal and non-verbal) behaviour of each to that of the other(s). Implementation of this
behavior in spoken dialogue systems is desirable as an improvement on the naturalness of humanmachine interaction. However, traditional qualitative descriptions of accommodation phenomena do not provide sufficient information for such an implementation. Therefore, a quantitative
description of inter-speaker accommodation is required. This thesis proposes a methodology of monitoring accommodation during a human or humancomputer dialogue, …
Adaptive Hysteresis Band Control For Constant Switching Frequency In Dtc Induction Machine Drives, H. İbrahi̇m Okumuş, Mustafa Aktaş
Adaptive Hysteresis Band Control For Constant Switching Frequency In Dtc Induction Machine Drives, H. İbrahi̇m Okumuş, Mustafa Aktaş
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
It is fairly well known that direct torque control (DTC) exhibits fast dynamic torque response, a property that originates in the fact that torque and flux is directly controlled by instantaneous space voltage vector, unlike field-oriented control. For this reason direct torque control gradually has been used in the field, eliciting quick response and high efficiency since its introduction in the mid-1980s. Conventional fixed band hysteresis control has several problems. One of these is variable switching frequency, which causes serious problems in DTC. In this paper, an adaptive hysteresis band control strategy is proposed, where the hysteresis band is controlled …
Artificial Neural Network Based Chaotic Generator For Cryptology, İlker Dalkiran, Kenan Danişman
Artificial Neural Network Based Chaotic Generator For Cryptology, İlker Dalkiran, Kenan Danişman
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Chaotic systems are sensitive to initial conditions, system parameters and topological transitivity and these properties are also remarkable for cryptanalysts. Noise like behavior of chaotic systems is the main reason of using these systems in cryptology. However some properties of chaotic systems such as synchronization, fewness of parameters etc. cause serious problems for cryptology. In this paper, to overcome disadvantages of chaotic systems, the dynamics of Chua's circuit namely x, y and z were modeled using Artificial Neural Network (ANN). ANNs have some distinctive capabilities like learning from experiences, generalizing from a few data and nonlinear relationship between inputs and …

The Effect Of The Channel Reliability Factor In The Map Algorithm On Turbo Code Performance In Bluetooth Systems, Sali̇m Kahveci̇, İsmai̇l Kaya
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The effects of the channel reliability factor on the performance of turbo decoders that use a maximum a posteriori probability algorithm are investigated for wireless communication fading channels, such as Bluetooth systems. The channel reliability factor is related to the channel signal-to-noise ratio. For various values of the channel reliability factor, the obtained performance curves of the maximum a posteriori probability algorithm are given for the case of DMx Bluetooth data packets. When the channel reliability factor increases, the bit-error-rate performance of the DMx Bluetooth data packets also increases over fading channels.

The Effect Of Heat On The Metallurgical Structure And B-H Characteristic Of (Stator) Armature With Iron-Silicon Alloy In Electric Machines, Fevzi̇ Kentli̇, Ümi̇t Kemaletti̇n Terzi̇
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Coils in electric machines are varnished for insulation after winding. These varnished coils are formed in stiff construction in slots. Under heavy-duty operating conditions, all or part of some coils may be burnt or broken. Thermal method is one of several ways to remove the defective coils. In this method, current is passed through the defective coils by an autotransformer (variac) until all the varnish of the coils is burned. If all the coils are out of order, the varnish is burned by replacing the stator or armature in a burning room. Consequently, defective coils in the stator (armature) slots …

A Model Based Nonlinear Adaptive Controller For The Passive Bilateral Telerobotic System, Ufuk Özbay, Erkan Zergeroğlu, İlyas Kandemi̇r
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
IIn this paper, we propose a new adaptive controller scheme for the bilateral telerobotic/teleoperation systems. The proposed controller achieves asymptotic tracking despite the parametric uncertainties associated with both master and slave robots while ensuring the passivity of the closed loop system. Extensive simulation studies are presented to illustrate the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed adaptive controller.

Design And Evaluation Of A Linear Switched Reluctance Actuator For Positioning Tasks, António Espírito Santo, Rosário Calado, Carlos Cabrita
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper presents the development of a new linear switched reluctance actuator and confirms its applicability to perform positioning tasks. After the explanation of the actuator working principle and the presentation of its electromechanical topology, an analysis is accomplished using a finite elements tool. Based on the theoretical results, an experimental prototype that can develop 150 N was constructed. Its behaviour is observed under two different control methods implemented with microcontrollers. Initially, position is controlled applying a single pulse-driving scheme. Meanwhile, significant improvements are obtained with the introduction of a sliding-mode controller, allowing movements with 1 mm of resolution.

An Approach Based On Particle Swarm Computation To Study The Nanoscale Dg Mosfet-Based Circuits, Fayacl Djeffal, Toufik Bendib, Redha Benzid, Abdelhamid Benhaya
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The analytical modeling of nanoscale Double-Gate MOSFETs (DG) requires generally several necessary simplifying assumptions to lead to compact expressions of current-voltage characteristics for nanoscale CMOS circuits design. Further, progress in the development, design and optimization of nanoscale devices necessarily require new theory and modeling tools in order to improve the accuracy and the computational time of circuits' simulators. In this paper, we propose a new particle swarm strategy to study the nanoscale CMOS circuits. The latter is based on the 2-D numerical Non-Equilibrium Green's Function (NEGF) simulation and a new extended long channel DG MOSFET compact model. Good agreement between …

Increased numbers of data security breaches and information technology implementations have caused concern over the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of electronic personal health information. The federal government has implemented stringent HIPAA security compliance reviews and significantly extended the scope and enforcement of the HIPAA Security Rule. However, academic medical centers have shown limited compliance with the HIPAA Security Rule. Therefore, the goal of this study was to investigate the factors that may affect HIPAA security compliance in academic medical centers. Based on a review …
Quantum Algorithm Animator, Lori Eileen Nicholson
Quantum Algorithm Animator, Lori Eileen Nicholson
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
The design and development of quantum algorithms present a challenge, especially for inexperienced computer science students. Despite the numerous common concepts with classical computer science, quantum computation is still considered a branch of theoretical physics not commonly used by computer scientists. Experimental research into the development of a quantum computer makes the use of quantum mechanics in organizing computation more attractive, however the physical realization of a working quantum computer may still be decades away.
This study introduces quantum computing to computer science students using a quantum algorithm animator called QuAL. QuAL's design uses features common to classical algorithm animators …

Trust And Trustworthiness: A Framework For Successful Design Of Telemedicine, James Robert Templeton
Trust And Trustworthiness: A Framework For Successful Design Of Telemedicine, James Robert Templeton
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Trust and its antecedents have been demonstrated as a barrier to the successful adoption of numerous fields of technology, most notably e-commerce, and may be a key factor in the lack of adoption or adaptation in the field of telemedicine. In the medical arena, trust is often formed through the relationships cultivated over time via clinician and patient. Trust and interpersonal relationships may also play a significant role in the adoption of telemedicine. The idea of telemedicine has been explored for nearly 30 years in one form or another. Yet, despite grandiose promises of how it will someday significantly improve …

Physician Information Seeking Behaviors: Are Physicians Successful Searchers?, Janice Swiatek-Kelley
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
In the recent past, physicians found answers to questions by consulting colleagues, textbooks, and professional journals. Now, the availability of medical information through electronic resources has changed physician information-seeking behaviors. Evidence-based medicine is now the accepted decision-making paradigm, and a physician's ability to locate best practice guidelines through electronic information resources has become an essential skill. As physicians struggle to stay current in the wake of an ever-growing volume of medical information, several electronic resources claim to provide one-stop access to the most current information with correct and complete answers to problems encountered in the practice of health care. The …
Developing A Framework For Evaluation Of Corporate Non-Transactional Business-To-Consumer Web Sites: A Descriptive Study, Karen Denise Pate
Developing A Framework For Evaluation Of Corporate Non-Transactional Business-To-Consumer Web Sites: A Descriptive Study, Karen Denise Pate
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
During the soaring information economy of the last decade, organizations spent large sums of money on the development of Web sites without much knowledge of their performance value. In time, organizations realized that measuring Web site performance to determine value was fundamental. For transactional, e-commerce Business-to-Consumer (B2C) Web sites, this effort is straightforward because value is attached to sales. Measuring performance to determine the value of non-transactional B2C Web sites (i.e., sites that provide information, not sales) is more complex.
This study examined the underexplored subject of evaluating non-transactional Web sites. Performance was defined as outcomes ranging from site visitor …

Asynchronous Particle Swarm Optimization-Based Search With A Multi-Robot System: Simulation And Implementation On A Real Robotic System, Sali̇h Burak Akat, Veysel Gazi̇, Lino Marques
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this article we consider a version of the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm which is appropriate for search tasks of multi-agent systems consisting of small robots with limited sensing capability. The proposed method adopts asynchronous mechanism for information exchange and position (way point) updates of the agents. Moreover, at each (information exchange) step the agents communicate with only a possibly different subset of the other agents leading to a dynamic neighborhood topology. We implement the algorithm using the Player/Stage realistic robot simulator as well as on real KheperaIII robots using experimentally collected realistic data of ethanol gas concentration. Simulation …
Effect Of Transformer On Stochastic Estimation Of Voltage Sag Due To Faults In The Power System: A Pscad/Emtdc Simulation, Nita R. Patne, K. L. Thakre
Effect Of Transformer On Stochastic Estimation Of Voltage Sag Due To Faults In The Power System: A Pscad/Emtdc Simulation, Nita R. Patne, K. L. Thakre
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Voltage sags in the electric power system are mostly due to faults in the power system. Voltage sag is characterized by its magnitude (the retained voltage), phase-angle jump, unbalance in the sag in the three phases, and duration. Type of transformers in the electrical system is the important parameter influencing the characteristic of sag at the node where sensitive loads are connected. For sensitive loads it is necessary to estimate how many times in a year the voltage at their terminal will experience sag to avoid tripping of operation. In this paper the effect of transformer on stochastic estimation of …

Formation Control Of Nonholonomic Mobile Robots Using Implicit Polynomials And Elliptic Fourier Descriptors, Yeşi̇m Hümay Esi̇n, Mustafa Ünel
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper presents a novel method for the formation control of a group of nonholonomic mobile robots using implicit and parametric descriptions of the desired formation shape. The formation control strategy employs implicit polynomial (IP) representations to generate potential fields for achieving the desired formation and the elliptical Fourier descriptors (EFD) to maintain the formation once achieved. Coordination of the robots is modeled by linear springs between each robot and its two nearest neighbors. Advantages of this new method are increased flexibility in the formation shape, scalability to different swarm sizes and easy implementation. The shape formation control is first …

Judges' Awareness, Understanding, And Application Of Digital Evidence, Gary Craig Kessler
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
As digital evidence grows in both volume and importance in criminal and civil courts, judges need to fairly and justly evaluate the merits of the offered evidence. To do so, judges need a general understanding of the underlying technologies and applications from which digital evidence is derived. Due to the relative newness of the computer forensics field, there have been few studies on the use of digital forensic evidence and none about judges' relationship with digital evidence.
This study addressed judges' awareness, knowledge, and perceptions of digital evidence, using grounded theory methods. The interaction of judges with digital evidence has …
