A Social Relation Aware Routing Protocol For Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Jisun An, Yangwoo Ko, Dongman Lee Mar 2009

A Social Relation Aware Routing Protocol For Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Jisun An, Yangwoo Ko, Dongman Lee

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we propose a social relation aware routing protocol for mobile ad hoc networks, which is designed for content sharing mobile social applications. Since a content can be shared by a group of users who have similar interests, the similarity of users' interests is a good metric to predict who will consume which contents. Shared interests can be exploited in routing and replication of content request and reply to achieve enhanced efficacy in content sharing. Since routing determines which content will be forwarded by whom, a route selected based on similarity of interest increases the utilization of contents …

Web Query Recommendation Via Sequential Query Prediction, Qi He, Daxin Jiang, Zhen Liao, Steven C. H. Hoi, Kuiyu Chang, Ee Peng Lim, Hang Li Mar 2009

Web Query Recommendation Via Sequential Query Prediction, Qi He, Daxin Jiang, Zhen Liao, Steven C. H. Hoi, Kuiyu Chang, Ee Peng Lim, Hang Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Web query recommendation has long been considered a key feature of search engines. Building a good Web query recommendation system, however, is very difficult due to the fundamental challenge of predicting users' search intent, especially given the limited user context information. In this paper, we propose a novel "sequential query prediction" approach that tries to grasp a user's search intent based on his/her past query sequence and its resemblance to historical query sequence models mined from massive search engine logs. Different query sequence models were examined, including the naive variable length N-gram model, Variable Memory Markov (VMM) model, and our …

Server-Assisted Context-Dependent Pervasive Wellness Monitoring, Archan Misra, Ben Falchuk, Shoshana Loeb Mar 2009

Server-Assisted Context-Dependent Pervasive Wellness Monitoring, Archan Misra, Ben Falchuk, Shoshana Loeb

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent research on remote health monitoring solutions has focused largely on developing context-dependent, streamprocessing capabilities on a personal mobile hub (typically, a cellphone) for energy-efficient transmission of data collected from a set of body-worn medical sensors. In this paper, we argue that commercial deployment of such pervasive wellness monitoring will require the extension of such ‘context dependency’ to the process of data collection (from the sensors to the mobile device) as well. In particular, the utilization of an individuals non-medical activity context, by the cellphone, in coordination with a backend server, is posited to be the key to supporting important …

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

In this article, the authors explore various uses of inexpensive embedded Linux devices such as the Linksys NSLU2 ("slug"). Embedded computing is a topic of growing interest. Although novel architectures such as cell processors, graphics processors (GPUs), and FPGAs are growing in popularity, conventional microproessor designs such as Intel's Xscale (ARM) and Atom pack a punch in a small footprint, not to mention being widely supported by commodity operating system and development tools. We're convinced that this entire space is a tool worth keeping in the scientific programmer's and software developer's toolchests.

Charts Data Fusion: Multi-Sensor Imagery Co-Registration, Shachak Pe'eri, Yuri Rzhanov

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

The compact hydrographic airborne rapid total survey (CHARTS) is a USACE sensor system that includes a SHOALS-3000 (3-kHz bathymetric laser and a 20-kHz topographic laser), CASI-1500 hyperspectral scanner, and a DuncanTech (DT)- 4000 digital RGB camera. The datasets produced from each sensor in CHARTS contributes a specific aspect according to its physical capabilities and limitations. Fusion of data products from a multi-sensor collection has the potential to perform a comprehensive survey and to produce tools for geo-analysis, especially for coastal research. A basic requirement in the data fusion is the co-registration between the datasets. Data from GPS/INS was intentionally ignored …

Improving Travel Information Products Via Robust Estimation Techniques, David Maier, Kristin A. Tufte, Rafael J. Fernández Moctezuma Mar 2009

Improving Travel Information Products Via Robust Estimation Techniques, David Maier, Kristin A. Tufte, Rafael J. Fernández Moctezuma

TREC Final Reports

Traffic-monitoring systems, such as those using loop detectors, are prone to coverage gaps, arising from sensor noise, processing errors and transmission problems. Such gaps adversely affect the accuracy of Advanced Traveler Information Systems. This project will explore models based on historical data that can provide estimates to fill such gaps. We build on an initial study by Mr. Rafael J. Fernandez-Moctezuma, using both a linear model and an artificial neural network (ANN) trained on historical data to estimate values for reporting gaps. These initial models were 80% and 89% accurate, respectively, in estimating the correct speed range, and misclassifications were …

Network Security Using Self Organized Multi-Agent Swarms, Eric M. Holloway, Gary B. Lamont, Gilbert L. Peterson Mar 2009

Network Security Using Self Organized Multi-Agent Swarms, Eric M. Holloway, Gary B. Lamont, Gilbert L. Peterson

Faculty Publications

Computer network cyber-security is a very serious concern in many commercial, industrial, and military environments. This paper proposes a new computer network security approach defined by self organized agent swarms (SOMAS) which provides a novel computer network security management framework based upon desired overall system behaviors. The SOMAS structure evolves based upon the partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP) formal model and the more complex interactive-POMDP and decentralized-POMDP models. Example swarm specific and network based behaviors are formalized and simulated. This paper illustrates through various statistical testing techniques, the significance of this proposed SOMAS architecture.

A Dynamic Attribute-Based Data Filtering And Recovery Scheme For Web Information Processing, Amit Ahuja, Yiu-Kai D. Ng Mar 2009

A Dynamic Attribute-Based Data Filtering And Recovery Scheme For Web Information Processing, Amit Ahuja, Yiu-Kai D. Ng

Faculty Publications

Web data being transmitted over a network channel on the Internet with excessive amount of data causes data processing problems, which include selectively choosing useful information to be retained for various data applications. In this paper, we present an approach for filtering less-informative attribute data from a source Website. A scheme for filtering attributes, instead of tuples (records), from a Website becomes imperative, since filtering a complete tuple would lead to filtering some informative, as well as less-informative, attribute data in the tuple. Since filtered data at the source Website may be of interest to the user at the destination …

Continuous Visible Nearest Neighbour Queries, Yunjun Gao, Baihua Zheng, Wang-Chien Lee, Gencai Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we identify and solve a new type of spatial queries, called continuous visible nearest neighbor (CVNN) search. Given a data set P, an obstacle set O, and a query line segment q, a CVNN query returns a set of (p, R) tuples such that p ? P is the nearest neighbor (NN) to every point r along the interval R ? q as well as p is visible to r. Note that p may be NULL, meaning that all points in P are invisible to all points in R, due to the obstruction of some obstacles in …

Programmable Presence Virtualization For Next-Generation Context-Based Applications, Arup Acharya, Nilanjan Banerjee, Dipanjan Chakraborty, Koustuv Dasgupta, Archan Misra, Shachi Sharma, Xiping Wang, Charles P. Wright

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Presence, broadly defined as an event publish-notification infrastructure for converged applications, has emerged as a key mechanism for collecting and disseminating context attributes for next-generation services in both enterprise and provider domains. Current presence-based solutions and products lack in the ability to a) support flexible user-defined queries over dynamic presence data and b) derive composite presence from multiple provider domains. Accordingly, current uses of context are limited to individual domains/organizations and do not provide a programmable mechanism for rapid creation of context-aware services. This paper describes a presence virtualization architecture, where a virtualized presence server receives customizable queries from multiple …

Satellite-Based Fusion Of Image/Inertial Sensors For Precise Geolocation, Neil R. Jesse Feb 2009

Satellite-Based Fusion Of Image/Inertial Sensors For Precise Geolocation, Neil R. Jesse

Theses and Dissertations

The ability to produce high-resolution images of the Earth’s surface from space has flourished in recent years with the continuous development and improvement of satellite-based imaging sensors. Earth-imaging satellites often rely on complex onboard navigation systems, with dependence on Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking and/or continuous post-capture georegistration, to accurately geolocate ground targets of interest to either commercial and military customers. Consequently, these satellite systems are often massive, expensive, and susceptible to poor or unavailable target tracking capabilities in GPS-denied environments. Previous research has demonstrated that a tightly-coupled image-aided inertial navigation system (INS), using existing onboard imaging sensors, can provide …

Spa: On-Line Availability Upgrades For Parity-Based Raids Through Supplementary Parity Augmentations, Lei Tian, Hong Jiang, Dan Feng, Qiang Cao, Changsheng Xie, Qin Xin

School of Computing: Technical Reports

In this paper, we propose a simple but powerful on-line availability upgrade mechanism, Supplementary Parity Augmentations (SPA), to address the availability issue for parity-based RAID systems. The basic idea of SPA is to store and update the supplementary parity units on one or a few newly augmented spare disks for on-line RAID systems in the operational mode, thus achieving the goals of improving the reconstruction performance while tole-rating multiple disk failures and latent sector errors simultaneously. By applying the exclusive OR operations appropriately among supplementary parity, full parity and data units, SPA can reconstruct the data on the failed disks …

A Unified Approach To Gpu-Accelerated Aerial Video Enhancement Techniques, Stephen Thayn Cluff Feb 2009

A Unified Approach To Gpu-Accelerated Aerial Video Enhancement Techniques, Stephen Thayn Cluff

Theses and Dissertations

Video from aerial surveillance can provide a rich source of data for analysts. From the time-critical perspective of wilderness search and rescue operations, information extracted from aerial videos can mean the difference between a successful search and an unsuccessful search. When using low-cost, payload-limited mini-UAVs, as opposed to more expensive platforms, several challenges arise, including jittery video, narrow fields of view, low resolution, and limited time on screen for key features. These challenges make it difficult for analysts to extract key information in a timely manner. Traditional approaches may address some of these issues, but no existing system effectively addresses …

Crm And Spiritual Care, Gary L. James Feb 2009

Crm And Spiritual Care, Gary L. James

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The Spiritual Care Department at Senior Care Residences does not have a computer database to record the chaplain's time during residents' visits, working with volunteers, and working with current or potential donors. This poses several problems such as keeping track of visits. Tracking this information will allow the chaplain to know whom he/she has provided spiritual care. This information is also critical for the volunteers he/she works with and current and potential donors. By implementing a CRM(Customer Relationship Management) application, the chaplain will have this information to help make informed decisions, and the automated computer system will help make recommendations.

Pat: Towards Flexible Verification Under Fairness, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong, Jun Pang Feb 2009

Pat: Towards Flexible Verification Under Fairness, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong, Jun Pang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent development on distributed systems has shown that a variety of fairness constraints (some of which are only recently defined) play vital roles in designing self-stabilizing population protocols. Current practice of system analysis is, however, deficient under fairness. In this work, we present PAT, a toolkit for flexible and efficient system analysis under fairness. A unified algorithm is proposed to model check systems with a variety of fairness effectively in two different settings. Empirical evaluation shows that PAT complements existing model checkers in terms of fairness. We report that previously unknown bugs have been revealed using PAT against systems functioning …

We also examined variation in phylogenetic placement based on multiple commonly used approaches (ARB alignments and multiple RDP tools). The results demonstrate that this soil bacterial community is highly diverse, with 1,714 operational taxonomic units demonstrated and 3,555 estimated (based on …

Computing For Human Experience: Sensors, Perception, Semantics, Web N.0, And Beyond, Amit P. Sheth Feb 2009

Computing For Human Experience: Sensors, Perception, Semantics, Web N.0, And Beyond, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Traditionally there has been a strong separation between computing and human activities in the real world. The approach has largely been that of mapping the complexity and richness of the real world to constrained computer models and languages for more efficient computation, and then transferring the results for use in the real world. I think the time is ripe to reverse the situation, for computing and communication to transparently enrich and enhance human experience. Today, devices enable something more than a 'human instructs machine' paradigm. We are seeing computing and communication engage transparently in human activities by enriching them in …
