Efficient Mining Of Closed Repetitive Gapped Subsequences From A Sequence Database, Bolin Ding, David Lo, Jiawei Han, Siau-Cheng Khoo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
There is a huge wealth of sequence data available, for example, customer purchase histories, program execution traces, DNA, and protein sequences. Analyzing this wealth of data to mine important knowledge is certainly a worthwhile goal. In this paper, as a step forward to analyzing patterns in sequences, we introduce the problem of mining closed repetitive gapped subsequences and propose efficient solutions. Given a database of sequences where each sequence is an ordered list of events, the pattern we would like to mine is called repetitive gapped subsequence, which is a subsequence (possibly with gaps between two successive events within it) …

Information Leakage As A Model For Quality Of Anonymity Networks, Ye Zhu, Riccardo Bettati
Information Leakage As A Model For Quality Of Anonymity Networks, Ye Zhu, Riccardo Bettati
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Measures for anonymity in systems must be on one hand simple and concise, and on the other hand reflect the realities of real systems. Such systems are heterogeneous, as are the ways they are used, the deployed anonymity measures, and finally the possible attack methods. Implementation quality and topologies of the anonymity measures must be considered as well. We therefore propose a new measure for the anonymity degree, that takes into account these various. We model the effectiveness of single mixes or of mix networks in terms of information leakage, and we measure it in terms of covert channel capacity. …
An Incremental Threshold Method For Continuous Text Search Queries, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Hwee Hwa Pang
An Incremental Threshold Method For Continuous Text Search Queries, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Hwee Hwa Pang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A text filtering system monitors a stream of incoming documents, to identify those that match the interest profiles of its users. The user interests are registered at a server as continuous text search queries. The server constantly maintains for each query a ranked result list, comprising the recent documents (drawn from a sliding window) with the highest similarity to the query. Such a system underlies many text monitoring applications that need to cope with heavy document traffic, such as news and email monitoring. In this paper, we propose the first solution for processing continuous text queries efficiently. Our objective is …

Efficient Evaluation Of Multiple Preference Queries, Hou U Leong, Nikos Mamaoulis, Kyriakos Mouratidis
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Consider multiple users searching for a hotel room, based on size, cost, distance to the beach, etc. Users may have variable preferences expressed by different weights on the attributes of the searched objects. Although individual preference queries can be evaluated by selecting the object in the database with the highest aggregate score, in the case of multiple requests at the same time, a single object cannot be assigned to more than one users. The challenge is to compute a fair 1-1 matching between the queries and a subset of the objects. We model this as a stable-marriage problem and propose …

Beyond Output Voting: Detecting Compromised Replicas Using Hmm-Based Behavioral Distance, Debin Gao, Michael K. Reiter, Dawn Song
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Many host-based anomaly detection techniques have been proposed to detect code-injection attacks on servers. The vast majority, however, are susceptible to "mimicry" attacks in which the injected code masquerades as the original server software, including returning the correct service responses, while conducting its attack. "Behavioral distance," by which two diverse replicas processing the same inputs are continually monitored to detect divergence in their low-level (system-call) behaviors and hence potentially the compromise of one of them, has been proposed for detecting mimicry attacks. In this paper, we present a novel approach to behavioral distance measurement using a new type of hidden …
Describing Fuzzy Sets Using A New Concept: Fuzzify Functor, Kexin Wei, Zhaoxia Wang, Quan Wang
Describing Fuzzy Sets Using A New Concept: Fuzzify Functor, Kexin Wei, Zhaoxia Wang, Quan Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper proposed a fuzzify functor as an extension of the concept of fuzzy sets. The fuzzify functor and the first-order operated fuzzy set are defined. From the theory analysis, it can be observed that when the fuzzify functor acts on a simple crisp set, we get the first order fuzzy set or type-1 fuzzy set. By operating the fuzzify functor on fuzzy sets, we get the higher order fuzzy sets or higher type fuzzy sets and their membership functions. Using the fuzzify functor we can exactly describe the type-1 fuzzy sets, type-2 fuzzy sets and higher type or higher …
Using Gis To Locate Areas For Growing Quality Coffee In Honduras, Ellen Mickle
Using Gis To Locate Areas For Growing Quality Coffee In Honduras, Ellen Mickle
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
Abstract Small-scale coffee producers worldwide remain vulnerable to price fluctuations after the 1999-2003 coffee crisis. One way to increase small-scale farmer economic resilience is to produce a more expensive product, such as quality coffee. There is growing demand in coffee-producing and coffee-importing countries for user-friendly tools that facilitate the marketing of quality coffee. The purpose of this study is to develop a prototypical quality coffee marketing tool in the form of a GIS model that identifies regions for producing quality coffee in a country not usually associated with quality coffee, Honduras. Maps of areas for growing quality coffee were produced …

Rsa-Based Certificateless Public Key Encryption, Junzuo Lai, Robert H. Deng, Shengli Liu, Weidong Kou
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Certificateless Public Key Cryptography was first introduced by Al-Riyami and Paterson in order to eliminate the inherent key-escrow problem of Identity-Based Cryptography. In this paper, we present a new practical construction of certificateless public key encryption scheme without paring. Our scheme is, in the random oracle model, provably secure under the assumption that the RSA problem is intractable.
Optimal Digital Content Distribution Strategy In The Presence Of Consumer-To-Consumer Channel, Yunfang Feng, Zhiling Guo, Wei-Yu Kevin Chiang
Optimal Digital Content Distribution Strategy In The Presence Of Consumer-To-Consumer Channel, Yunfang Feng, Zhiling Guo, Wei-Yu Kevin Chiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Although the online business-to-consumer (B2C) channel is the primary selling channel for digital content (e.g., videos, images, and music), modern digital technology has made possible the legal dissemination of such content over the consumer-to-consumer (C2C) channel through personal computing devices, such as PCs, mobile phones, and portable media players. This paper investigates the optimal channel structure and the corresponding pricing and service strategies for digital content distribution in order to understand the business value of introducing the C2C channel alongside the prevailing B2C channel. We identify conditions under which it is more profitable to use both B2C and C2C channels …

Opaque: Protecting Path Privacy In Directions Search, Ken C. K. Lee, Wang-Chien Lee, Hong Va Leong, Baihua Zheng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Directions search returns the shortest path from a source to a destination on a road network. However, the search interests of users may be exposed to the service providers, thus raising privacy concerns. For instance, a path query that finds a path from a resident address to a clinic may lead to a deduction about "who is related to what disease". To protect user privacy from accessing directions search services, we introduce the OPAQUE system, which consists of two major components: (1) an obfuscator that formulates obfuscated path queries by mixing true and fake sources/destinations; and (2) an obfuscated path …

Achieving Better Privacy Protection In Wireless Sensor Networks Using Trusted Computing, Yanjiang Yang, Robert H. Deng, Jianying Zhou, Ying Qiu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A wireless sensor network (WSN) is an ad-hoc wireless network composed of small sensor nodes deployed in large numbers. Sensor nodes are usually severely resource limited and power constrained. Security enforcement in WSNs is thus a challenging task. In this paper we propose a clustered heterogeneous architecture for WSNs, where high-end cluster heads are incorporated, and they are further equipped with trusted computing technology (TC). As such, the cluster heads act as trusted parties, and are expected to help effectively address privacy issues in WSNs. As concrete examples, we discuss in details how user query privacy and source location privacy …
Test Case Generation Using Model Checking For Software Components Deployed Into New Environments, Tonglaga Bao, Michael D. Jones
Test Case Generation Using Model Checking For Software Components Deployed Into New Environments, Tonglaga Bao, Michael D. Jones
Faculty Publications
In this paper, we show how to generate test cases for a component deployed into a new software environment. This problem is important for software engineers who need to deploy a component into a new environment. Most existing model based testing approaches generate models from high level specifications. This leaves a semantic gap between the high level specification and the actual implementation. Furthermore, the high level specification often needs to be manually translated into a model, which is a time consuming and error prone process. We propose generating the model automatically by abstracting the source code of the component using …

Optimizing Service Systems Based On Application-Level Qos, Qianhui Liang, Xindong Wu, Hoong Chuin Lau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Making software systems service-oriented is becoming the practice, and an increasingly large number of service systems play important roles in today's business and industry. Currently, not enough attention has been paid to the issue of optimization of service systems. In this paper, we argue that the key elements to be considered in optimizing service systems are robustness, system orientation, and being dynamic and transparent. We present our solution to optimizing service systems based on application-level QoS management. Our solution incorporates three capabilities, i.e., 1) the ability to cater to the varying rigidities on Web service QoS in distinct application domains …

A Framework For Using Modeling And Simulation-Based Methods In Support Of Project Management In A U.S. Department Of Defense Enterprise Architecture Framework Environment, Jose Leprout Bricio-Neto
Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The Enterprise Architecture, Analysis and Project Management (EA2PM) framework developed and proposed in this study enables better evaluation of the ability for enterprise architects, project managers and analysts to share system data using their own domain-specific software tools with a focus on the capability to automatically generate a discrete-event simulation model. EA2PM framework is based on applying a Knowledge Management (KM) construct to establish data and information boundaries, and developing a methodology that allows for high levels of traceability from system architecture's environmental factors through assessment of data and information mediation across domains within a KM system.

Pipelined Apache Http Server, Kevin Le
Pipelined Apache Http Server, Kevin Le
Master's Theses
Web servers often become overloaded with irregular surges in web traffic. Several techniques have been explored to cope with these overloads such as distributing load throughout different servers. This thesis presents Pipelined Apache HTTP Server, a modified version of the Apache Software Foundation’s HTTP Server that utilizes a pipelined execution of Apache’s request cycle. We discuss Apache’s original architecture, the modifications necessary for implementation of pipelined execution, and analyze its run time. Ultimately, we hoped to increase throughput of Apache but fall short because of unbalanced request phases and pipelining overhead.
A Compact Lidar For Aircraft Ozone Atmospheric Measurements, Joel A. Marcia
A Compact Lidar For Aircraft Ozone Atmospheric Measurements, Joel A. Marcia
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Researchers and the general public have expressed great concern over how human activities exacerbate pollution's deteriorating impact upon the environment. Effects such as global warming, air quality and ozone layer depletion are but a few examples that can have a dramatic effect on the quality of life worldwide.
A compact lidar system for the purpose of aircraft ozone atmospheric measurements was tested and evaluated. This system will eventually be deployed for aircraft-based, and possibly unpiloted atmospheric vehicle (UAV), ozone and aerosol measurements to improve our understanding of ozone production and transport. Each of the major subsystems was characterized and from …

A Hurricane Evacuation Route System Real-Time Monitoring And Distribution Of Load, Anup Khanal
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Hurricane evacuation is one of the major steps in diminishing the devastating effects of hurricanes on lives and properties. The challenge in evacuating a large number of people in a short time is the severe congestion faced in the transportation network, leading to long delays and shortages. Standard hurricane evacuation plans focus on how to best utilize the main arteries. The research challenge is to not overload the fastest routes and to utilize all the routes efficiently. The evacuation routing system proposed in this thesis focuses on distributing the traffic load throughout the network, utilizing alternative routes not considered in …

Tree-D-Seek: A Framework For Retrieving Three-Dimensional Scenes, Saurav Mazumdar
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
In this dissertation, a strategy and framework for retrieving 3D scenes is proposed. The strategy is to retrieve 3D scenes based on a unified approach for indexing content from disparate information sources and information levels. The TREE-D-SEEK framework implements the proposed strategy for retrieving 3D scenes and is capable of indexing content from a variety of corpora at distinct information levels. A semantic annotation model for indexing 3D scenes in the TREE-D-SEEK framework is also proposed. The semantic annotation model is based on an ontology for rapid prototyping of 3D virtual worlds.
With ongoing improvements in computer hardware and 3D …
Authenticated Streamwise On-Line Encryption, Patrick P. Tsang, Rouslan V. Solomakhin, Sean W. Smith
Authenticated Streamwise On-Line Encryption, Patrick P. Tsang, Rouslan V. Solomakhin, Sean W. Smith
Computer Science Technical Reports
In Blockwise On-line Encryption, encryption and decryption return an output block as soon as the next input block is received. In this paper, we introduce Authenticated Streamwise On-line Encryption (ASOE), which operates on plaintexts and ciphertexts as streams of arbitrary length (as opposed to fixed-sized blocks), and thus significantly reduces message expansion and end-to-end latency. Also, ASOE provides data authenticity as an option. ASOE can therefore be used to efficiently secure resource-constrained communications with real-time requirements such as those in the electric power grid and wireless sensor networks. We investigate and formalize ASOE's strongest achievable notion of security, and present …

Verifying Abstract Components Within Concrete Software Environments, Tonglaga Bao
Verifying Abstract Components Within Concrete Software Environments, Tonglaga Bao
Theses and Dissertations
In order to model check a software component which is not a standalone program, we need a model of the software which completes the program. This problem is important for software engineers who need to deploy an existing component into a new environment. The model is typically generated by abstracting the surrounding software environment in which the component will be executed. However, abstracting the surrounding software is a difficult and error-prone task, particularly when the surrounding software is a complex software artifact which can not be easily abstracted. In this dissertation, we present a new approach to the problem by …
Frequency Diversity For Improving Synthetic Aperture Radar Imaging, Jawad L. Farooq
Frequency Diversity For Improving Synthetic Aperture Radar Imaging, Jawad L. Farooq
Theses and Dissertations
In this work, a novel theoretical framework is presented for using recent advances in frequency diversity arrays (FDAs). Unlike a conventional array, the FDA simultaneously transmits a unique frequency from each element in the array. As a result, special time and space properties of the radiation pattern are exploited to improve cross-range resolution. The idealized FDA radiation pattern is compared with and validated against a full-wave electromagnetic solver, and it is shown that the conventional array is a special case of the FDA. A new signal model, based on the FDA, is used to simulate SAR imagery of ideal point …

Social networking websites are the fastest growing entity on the Internet. Users of social networking websites post personal information and pictures on these websites. Privacy and social networking websites has been previously studied, however, since those studies were conducted the rules for those websites have changed dramatically. A mixed methods approach was used in this study to examine what privacy concerns users of social networking websites have, whether it’s regarding information on their accounts or the pictures they have posted. This study also considered if there were common personality traits present in people with those concerns. A comparison of user …

Exploitation Of Geographic Information Systems For Vehicular Destination Prediction, Richard T. Muster
Theses and Dissertations
Much of the recent successes in the Iraqi theater have been achieved with the aid of technology so advanced that celebrated journalist Bob Woodward recently compared it to the Manhattan Project of WWII. Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms have emerged as the rising star of Air Force operational capabilities as they are enablers in the quest to track and disrupt terrorist and insurgent forces. This thesis argues that ISR systems have been severely under-exploited. The proposals herein seek to improve the machine-human interface of current ISR systems such that a predictive battle-space awareness may be achieved, leading to shorter …
