An Efficient Algorithm For Real-Time Divisible Load Scheduling, Anwar Mamat, Ying Lu, Jitender S. Deogun, Steve Goddard
An Efficient Algorithm For Real-Time Divisible Load Scheduling, Anwar Mamat, Ying Lu, Jitender S. Deogun, Steve Goddard
School of Computing: Technical Reports
Providing QoS and performance guarantees to arbitrarily divisible loads has become a significant problem for many cluster-based research computing facilities. While progress is being made in scheduling arbitrarily divisible loads, existing approaches are not very efficient and cannot scale to large clusters. In this paper we propose an efficient algorithm for real-time divisible load scheduling, which has a time complexity linear to the number of tasks and the number of nodes in the cluster.

Concerning File Slack, Stephen P. Larson
Concerning File Slack, Stephen P. Larson
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
In this paper we discuss the phenomena known as file slack. File slack is created each time a file is created on a hard disk, and can contain private or confidential data. Unfortunately, the methods used by Microsoft Windows operating systems to organize and save files require file slack, and users have no control over what data is saved in file slack. This document will help create awareness about the security issue of file slack and discuss research results concerning file slack.

Don’T Touch That! And Other E-Discovery Issues, Linda Volonino
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
The ability to preserve and access electronically stored information (ESI) took on greater urgency when amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure went into effect in December 2006. These amendments, referred to as the electronic discovery (e-discovery) amendments, focus on the discovery phase of civil litigation, audits, or investigations. Discovery is the investigative phase of a legal case when opponents learn what evidence is available and how accessible it is. When ESI is the subject of discovery, it is called e-discovery. Recognizing that most business and personal records and communications are electronic, Judge Shira A. Scheindlin stated, "We used …

Why Are We Not Getting Better At Data Disposal?, Andy Jones
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
This paper describes two sets of research, the first of which has been carried out over a period of four years into the levels and types of information that can be found on computer hard disks that are offered for sale on the second hand market. The second research project examined a number of second-hand hand held devices including PDAs, mobile (cell) phones and RIM Blackberry devices. The primary purpose of this research was to gain an understanding of the reasons for the failure to effectively remove potentially sensitive information from the disks and handheld devices. Other objectives included determining …

The Computer Fraud And Abuse Act And The Law Of Unintended Consequences, Milton Luoma, Vicki Luoma
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
One of the most unanticipated results of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act arose from the law of unintended consequences. The CFAA was originally enacted in 1984 to protect federal government computers from intrusions and damage caused by hackers, identity thieves, and other cyber criminals. The law was later amended to extend the scope of its application to financial institutions’, business’s and consumers’ computers. To aid in the pursuit of cyber criminals, one of the subsequent revisions to the law included provision “G” that gave the right to private parties to seek compensation for damages in a civil action for …
Correlating Orphaned Windows Registry Data Structures, Damir Kahvedžić, Tahar Kechadi
Correlating Orphaned Windows Registry Data Structures, Damir Kahvedžić, Tahar Kechadi
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Recently, it has been shown that deleted entries of the Microsoft Windows registry (keys) may still reside in the system files once the entries have been deleted from the active database. Investigating the complete keys in context may be extremely important from both a Forensic Investigation point of view and a legal point of view where a lack of context can bring doubt to an argument. In this paper we formalise the registry behaviour and show how a retrieved value may not maintain a relation to the part of the registry it belonged to and hence lose that context. We …

Analysis Of The ‘Db’ Windows Registry Data Structure, Damir Kahvedžić, Tahar Kechadi
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
The Windows Registry stores a wide variety of data representing a host of different user properties, settings and program information. The data structures used by the registry are designed to be adaptable to store these differences in a simple format. In this paper we will highlight the existence of a rare data structure that is used to store a large amount of data within the registry hives. We analyse the manner in which this data structure stores its data and the implications that it may have on evidence retrieval and digital investigation. In particular, we reveal that the three of …

An Exploration Of Topologies And Communication In Large Particle Swarms, Matthew Gardner, Andrew Mcnabb, Kevin Seppi
An Exploration Of Topologies And Communication In Large Particle Swarms, Matthew Gardner, Andrew Mcnabb, Kevin Seppi
Faculty Publications
Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) has typically been used with small swarms of about 50 particles. However, PSO is more efficiently parallelized with large swarms. We formally describe existing topologies and identify variations which are better suited to large swarms in both sequential and parallel computing environments. We examine the performance of PSO for benchmark functions with respect to swarm size and topology. We develop and demonstrate a new PSO variant which leverages the unique strengths of large swarms. “Hearsay PSO” allows for information to flow quickly through the swarm, even with very loosely connected topologies. These loosely connected topologies are …
Graduate Accounting Students' Perception Of It Forensics: A Multi-Dimensional Analysis, Grover S. Kearns
Graduate Accounting Students' Perception Of It Forensics: A Multi-Dimensional Analysis, Grover S. Kearns
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Forensics and information technology (IT) have become increasingly important to accountants and auditors. Undergraduate accounting students are introduced to general IT topics but discussion of forensic knowledge is limited. A few schools have introduced an undergraduate major in forensic accounting. Some graduate schools offer accounting students an emphasis in forensic or fraud accounting that includes instruction in forensics and information technology. When students do not view the IT topics as being equally important to their careers as traditional accounting topics, these attitudes may reduce the quality of the course. In an effort to assess student attitudes, a survey of 46 …
Visualization Of Honeypot Data Using Graphviz And Afterglow, Craig Valli
Visualization Of Honeypot Data Using Graphviz And Afterglow, Craig Valli
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
This research in progress paper explores the use of Graphviz and Afterglow for the analysis of data emanating from a honeypot system. Honeypot systems gather a wide range of data that is often difficult to readily search for patterns and trends using conventional log file analysis techniques. The data from the honeypots has been statically extracted and processed through Afterglow scripts to produce inputs suitable for use by the DOT graph based tools contained within Graphviz. This paper explores some of the benefits and drawbacks of currently using this type of approach.

Incentive Based Routing Protocol For Mobile Peer To Peer Networks, Anil Jade, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Mark Linderman
Incentive Based Routing Protocol For Mobile Peer To Peer Networks, Anil Jade, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Mark Linderman
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Incentive models are becoming increasingly popular in Mobile Peer to Peer Networks (M-P2P) as these models entice node participation in return for a virtual currency to combat free riding and to effectively manage constraint resources in the network. Many routing protocols proposed are based on best effort data traffic policy, such as the shortest route selection (hop minimization). Using virtual currency to find a cost effective optimal route from the source to the destination, while considering Quality of Service (QoS) aspects such as bandwidth and service capacity constraints for data delivery, remains a challenging task due to the presence of …

Easemail: Easy Accessible Secure Email, Ryan B. Segeberg
Theses and Dissertations
Traditional email encryption methods are difficult to set up, as they require senders to obtain a message recipient's public key before a secure communication can be sent. Easy Accessible Secure Email (EASEmail) addresses the key establishment and exchange issues of encrypted email by using a lightweight symmetric key server. Users can send a secure email without establishing or exchanging keys with the recipient in advance. With usability as its primary goal, EASEmail strives to bring usable secure email communication to the masses.

Theses and Dissertations
Issues in Automatic Video Biography Editing are similar to those in Video Scene Detection and Topic Detection and Tracking (TDT). The techniques of Video Scene Detection and TDT can be applied to interviews to reduce the time necessary to edit a video biography. The system has attacked the problems of extraction of video text, story segmentation, and correlation. This thesis project was divided into three parts: extraction, scene detection, and correlation. The project successfully detected scene breaks in series television episodes and displayed scenes that had similar content.

Computer Science: Faculty Publications
The Yao graph for k = 4, Y4, is naturally partitioned into four subgraphs, one per quadrant. We show that the subgraphs for one quadrant differ from the subgraphs for two adjacent quadrants in three properties: planarity, connectedness, and whether the directed graphs are spanners.
Visualizing The Simulation Of 3-D Underwater Sensor Networks, Matthew T. Tran
Visualizing The Simulation Of 3-D Underwater Sensor Networks, Matthew T. Tran
Honors Scholar Theses
The majority of sensor network research deals with land-based networks, which are essentially two-dimensional, and thus the majority of simulation and animation tools also only handle such networks. Underwater sensor networks on the other hand, are essentially 3D networks because the depth at which a sensor node is located needs to be considered as well. Due to that additional dimension, specialized tools need to be used when conducting simulations for experimentation.
The School of Engineering’s Underwater Sensor Network (UWSN) lab is conducting research on underwater sensor networks and requires simulation tools for 3D networks. The lab has extended NS-2, a …

Alternative Task Bar: A Usability Study, Jordan Cote
Honors Scholar Theses
An alternate approach to the task bar is proposed, one which makes use of modern computers' graphical abilities. This was accomplished with OpenGL, which is typically used in 3D scene generation. The application was integrated into the Desktop Environment in a novel way, in order to produce an arbitrary shaped window. The application was presented to survey participants, who were asked questions to reveal the feasibility of this type of task bar. Responses were positive, which encourages further development.
A Formal Framework For Modeling And Validating Simulink Diagrams, Chunqing Chen, Jin Song Dong, Jun Sun
A Formal Framework For Modeling And Validating Simulink Diagrams, Chunqing Chen, Jin Song Dong, Jun Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Simulink has been widely used in industry to model and simulate embedded systems. With the increasing usage of embedded systems in real-time safety-critical situations, Simulink becomes deficient to analyze (timing) requirements with high-level assurance. In this article, we apply Timed Interval Calculus (TIC), a realtime specification language, to complement Simulink with TIC formal verification capability. We elaborately construct TIC library functions to model Simulink library blocks which are used to compose Simulink diagrams. Next, Simulink diagrams are automatically transformed into TIC models which preserve functional and timing aspects. Important requirements such as timing bounded liveness can be precisely specified in …

Understanding Sources And Consequences Of Variation In Self-Assembly, Arjun Dasgupta
Understanding Sources And Consequences Of Variation In Self-Assembly, Arjun Dasgupta
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Self-assembly is the process of constructing a larger structure from small component parts that randomly collide and bond through weak interactions [2]. It is a potentially important method in the field of nanoscale manufacturing. However, because of the nature of self-assembly, randomness and the design of self-assembly compete with each other, and unforeseen things can be produced. In this thesis, the tiling assembly model of Winfree [7] was simulated. The tiling assembly model has two bonds which assemble planar nanostructures. The goal of the simulations was to determine what probabilities would produce an average degree of four (the ideal) for …

Towards Traceable Test-Driven Development, Jane Huffman Hayes, Alex Dekhtyar, David S. Janzen
Computer Science and Software Engineering
Key among the grand challenges in traceability are those that lead to achieving traceability as a by-product of the natural software development life cycle. This position paper profiles test-driven development (TDD), an emerging software development practice, in which automated tests and code satisfying them are developed in rapid succession over multiple iterations. Our position is that the nature of TDD offers unique opportunities for collecting traceability information throughout the TDD life cycle and that the provision of traceability information to the software developers during TDD will improve the process and the resulting software. We discuss the opportunities, challenges, and plans …

The technology for driver safety has been developed in many fields such as airbag system, Anti-lock Braking System or ABS, ultrasonic warning system, and others. Recently, some of the automobile companies have introduced a new feature of driver safety systems. This new system is to make the car slower if it finds a driver’s drowsy eyes. For instance, Toyota Motor Corporation announced that it has given its pre-crash safety system the ability to determine whether a driver’s eyes are properly open with an eye monitor. This paper is focusing on finding a driver’s drowsy eyes by using face detection technology. …
The Design And Implementation Of A Safe, Lightweight Haskell Compiler, Timothy Jan Chevalier
The Design And Implementation Of A Safe, Lightweight Haskell Compiler, Timothy Jan Chevalier
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Typed programming languages offer safety guarantees that help programmers write correct code, but typical language implementations offer no proof that source-level guarantees extend to executable code. Moreover, typical implementations link programs with unsafe runtime system (RTS) code. I present a compiler for the functional language Haskell that preserves some of the properties of Haskell’s type system. The soundness proof for the combination of the compiler and a verified RTS requires a proof that the compiler emits code that cooperates correctly with the RTS. In particular, the latter proof must address the boundary between the user program and the garbage collector. …

Semantic sensor Web enhances raw sensor data with spatial, temporal, and thematic annotations to enable high-level reasoning. In this paper, we explore how abductive reasoning framework can benefit formalization and interpretation of sensor data to garner situation awareness. Specifically, we show how abductive logic programming techniques, in conjunction with symbolic knowledge rules, can be used to detect inconsistent sensor data and to generate human accessible description of the state of the world from consistent subset of the sensor data. We also show how trust/belief information can be incorporated into the interpreter to enhance reliability. For concreteness, we formalize weather domain …
