An Animation Framework For Improving The Comprehension Of Tinyos Programs, Sravanthi Dandamudi Dec 2009

An Animation Framework For Improving The Comprehension Of Tinyos Programs, Sravanthi Dandamudi

All Theses

To meet the increasing demand for monitoring of the physical world, there has been an increase in the development of wireless sensor network applications. The TinyOS platform has emerged as a de facto standard for developing these applications. The platform offers a number of advantages, with its support for concurrency, power-efficient operation, and resource-constrained hardware chief among them. However, the benefits come at a price. Even without the TinyOS platform, the inherent parallel and distributed nature of these applications makes it difficult for developers to reason about program behavior. Further, the TinyOS programming model adopts
asynchronous, split-phase execution semantics. Developers …

Angular Rigidity In 3d: Combinatorial Characterizations And Algorithms, Audrey Lee-St.John, Ileana Streinu Dec 2009

Angular Rigidity In 3d: Combinatorial Characterizations And Algorithms, Audrey Lee-St.John, Ileana Streinu

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Constraint-based CAD software, used by engineers to design sophisticated mechanical systems, relies on a wide range of geometrical constraints. In this paper we focus on one special case: angular constraints in 3D. We give a complete combinatorial characterization for generic minimal rigidity in two new models: line- plane-and-angle and body-and-angle structures. As an immediate consequence, we obtain efficient algorithms for analyzing angular rigidity.

Review Of Browser Extensions, A Man-In-The-Browser Phishing Techniques Targeting Bank Customers, Nattakant Utakrit Dec 2009

Review Of Browser Extensions, A Man-In-The-Browser Phishing Techniques Targeting Bank Customers, Nattakant Utakrit

Australian Information Security Management Conference

Initially, online scammers (phishers) used social engineering techniques to send emails to solicit personal information from customer in order to steal money from their Internet banking account. Data, such as passwords or bank account details, could be further used for other criminal activities. For instance, the scammers may intend to leave the victim’s information behind after they have successfully committed the crime so that the police can suspect the visible evidence as a suspicious criminal. Many customers are now aware of the need to protect their banking details from the phishers by not providing any sensitive information. Recently, phishing attacks …

A Parallel Computing Test Bed For Performing An Unsupervised Fluoroscopic Analysis Of Knee Joint Kinematics, Renu Ramanatha Dec 2009

A Parallel Computing Test Bed For Performing An Unsupervised Fluoroscopic Analysis Of Knee Joint Kinematics, Renu Ramanatha

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Fluoroscopic analysis of knee joint kinematics involves accurately determining the position and orientation of bones in the knee joint. This data can be derived using the static 3-D CT scan images and 2-D video fluoroscopy images together. This involves generating hypothetical digitally reconstructed radiographs (DRR) from the CT scan image with known position and orientation and comparing them to the original fluoroscopic frame. This represents a search problem in which, among all the DRRs possible from a CT image, the image that most closely matches the target fluoroscopy frame of the knee joint has to be found.

Assessment Of Internationalised Domain Name Homograph Attack Mitigation, Peter Hannay, Christopher Bolan Dec 2009

Assessment Of Internationalised Domain Name Homograph Attack Mitigation, Peter Hannay, Christopher Bolan

Australian Information Security Management Conference

With the advent of internationalised domains the threat posed by non-english character sets has eventuated. Whilst this phenomenon remains well known in the development and internet industry the actual implementations of popular applications have been tested to determine their resilience to homograph based attack. The research found that most provided features that overcome such attacks, but there remain a few notable exceptions. Should an attacker take advantage of such oversights a victim would likely not be able to spot a fraudulent site or email and thus provide a perfect platform for subsequent attack.

The 2009 Personal Firewall Robustness Evaluation, Ken Pydayya, Peter Hannay, Patryk Szewczyk

Australian Information Security Management Conference

The evolution of the internet as a platform for commerce, banking, general information and personal communications has resulted in a situation where many individuals who may not have previously required internet access now require this connectivity as part of their everyday lives. In addition to this the widespread adoption of mobile broadband has lead to an increasing number of individuals having public facing IP addresses with no firewall appliances present. This situation has dramatically increased reliance on personal firewalls as the first and often last defence against intruders (human and malware alike). The evaluation performed demonstrates the capabilities of current …

Exploring The Relationship Between Organizational Culture And Information Security Culture, Joo S. Lim, Shanton Chang, Sean Maynard, Atif Ahmad

Australian Information Security Management Conference

Managing Information Security is becoming more challenging in today’s business because people are both a cause of information security incidents as well as a key part of the protection from them. As the impact of organizational culture (OC) on employees is significant, many researchers have called for the creation of information security culture (ISC) in organizations to influence the actions and behaviour of employees towards better organizational information security. Although researchers have called for the creation of ISC to be embedded in organizations, nonetheless, literature suggests that little past research examining the relationship between the nature of OC and ISC. …

Securing server from Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks is a challenging task for network operators. DDOS attacks are known to reduce the performance of web based applications and reduce the number of legitimate client connections. In this thesis, we evaluate performance of a Windows server 2003 under these attacks. In this thesis, we also evaluate and compare effectiveness of three different protection mechanisms, namely SYN Cache, SYN Cookie and SYN proxy protection methods, to protect against TCP SYN DDoS attacks. It is found that the SYN attack protection at the server is more effective at lower loads of SYN …

A Spoofing Attack Against An Epc Class One Rfid System, Christopher Bolan Dec 2009

A Spoofing Attack Against An Epc Class One Rfid System, Christopher Bolan

Australian Information Security Management Conference

In computing the term spoofing historically referred to the creation of TCP/IP packets using another device’s valid IP address to gain an advantage. The Electronic Product Code (EPC) RFID system was investigated to test the efficacy of spoofing a valid tag response to basic requests. A radio frequency transmission device was constructed to determine whether a valid reader could distinguish between the response of an actual tag and a spoofed response. The results show that the device was able to successfully deceive the EPC reader and further, to replace actual tag responses with a spoofed response. The potential for such …

A New Approach For Anonymous Password Authentication, Yanjiang Yang, Jianying Zhou, Jian Weng, Feng Bao Dec 2009

A New Approach For Anonymous Password Authentication, Yanjiang Yang, Jianying Zhou, Jian Weng, Feng Bao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Anonymous password authentication reinforces password authentication with the protection of user privacy. Considering the increasing concern of individual privacy nowadays, anonymous password authentication represents a promising privacy-preserving authentication primitive. However, anonymous password authentication in the standard setting has several inherent weaknesses, making its practicality questionable. In this paper, we propose a new and efficient approach for anonymous password authentication. Our approach assumes a different setting where users do not register their passwords to the server; rather, they use passwords to protect their authentication credentials. We present a concrete scheme, and get over a number of challenges in securing password-protected credentials …

Denial-Of-Service Attacks On Host-Based Generic Unpackers, Limin Liu, Jiang Ming, Zhi Wang, Debin Gao, Chunfu Jia

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the advance of packing techniques, a few generic and automatic unpackers have been proposed. These unpackers are designed to automatically unpack packed binaries without specific knowledge of the packing techniques used. In this paper, we present an automatic packer with which packed malware forges spurious unpacking behaviors that lead to a denial-of-service attack on host-based generic unpackers. We present the design, implementation, and evaluation of the proposed packer and malware produced using the proposed packer, and show the success of denial-of-service attacks on host-based generic unpackers.

Open Access Fiber To The Home Networking, Roger E. Timmerman Dec 2009

Open Access Fiber To The Home Networking, Roger E. Timmerman

Theses and Dissertations

The concept of open-access networks appeals to communities that want to invest in and improve their access to modern telecommunications services. By investing in, or building their own open-access telecommunications networks, communities can create an environment where several telecommunications service providers can co-exist on a common open-access infrastructure. This model promotes innovation and competition among several smaller service providers rather than having a monopoly or oligopoly from those companies that can afford the investment of infrastructure in the community. This research provides an analysis of two large open-access fiber-to-the-home networks in Utah to determine a set of recommendations and best-practices …

On Strategies For Imbalanced Text Classification Using Svm: A Comparative Study, Aixin Sun, Ee Peng Lim, Ying Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Many real-world text classification tasks involve imbalanced training examples. The strategies proposed to address the imbalanced classification (e.g., resampling, instance weighting), however, have not been systematically evaluated in the text domain. In this paper, we conduct a comparative study on the effectiveness of these strategies in the context of imbalanced text classification using Support Vector Machines (SVM) classifier. SVM is the interest in this study for its good classification accuracy reported in many text classification tasks. We propose a taxonomy to organize all proposed strategies following the training and the test phases in text classification tasks. Based on the taxonomy, …

Computationally Secure Hierarchical Self-Healing Key Distribution For Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks, Yanjiang Yang, Jianying Zhou, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao Dec 2009

Computationally Secure Hierarchical Self-Healing Key Distribution For Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks, Yanjiang Yang, Jianying Zhou, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Self-healing group key distribution is a primitive aimed to achieve robust key distribution in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) over lossy communication channels. However, all the existing self-healing group key distribution schemes in the literature are designed for homogenous WSNs that do not scale. In contract, heterogeneous WSNs have better scalability and performance. We are thus motivated to study self-healing group key distribution for heterogeneous WSNs. In particular, we propose the concept of hierarchical self-healing group key distribution, tailored to the heterogeneous WSN architecture; we further revisit and adapt Dutta et al.’s model to the setting of hierarchical self-healing group …

When You Can't See The Forest For The Domains: Why A Two Forest Model Should Be Used To Achieve Logical Segregation Between Scada And Corporate Networks, Andrew Woodward, Brett Turner Dec 2009

When You Can't See The Forest For The Domains: Why A Two Forest Model Should Be Used To Achieve Logical Segregation Between Scada And Corporate Networks, Andrew Woodward, Brett Turner

Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference

The increasing convergence of corporate and control systems networks creates new challenges for the security of critical infrastructure. There is no argument that whilst this connection of what was traditionally an isolated network, to a usually internet enabled corporate network, is unavoidable, segregation must be maintained. One such challenge presented is how to properly and appropriately configure an active directory environment to allow for exchange of required data, but still maintain the security goal of separation of the two networks. This paper argues that while separate domains may seem to achieve this goal, the reality is that a domain is …

Challenges In Improving Information Security Practice In Australian General Practice, Donald C. Mcdermid, Rachel J. Mahncke, Patricia A. Williams

Australian Information Security Management Conference

The status of information security in Australian medical general practice is discussed together with a review of the challenges facing small practices that often lack the technical knowledge and skill to secure patient information by themselves. It is proposed that an information security governance framework is required to assist practices in identifying weaknesses and gaps and then to plan and implement how to overcome their shortcomings through policies, training and changes to processes and management structure.

Security Requirements Engineering-The Reluctant Oxymoron, Michael N. Johnstone Dec 2009

Security Requirements Engineering-The Reluctant Oxymoron, Michael N. Johnstone

Australian Information Security Management Conference

Security is a focus in many systems that are developed today, yet this aspect of systems development is often relegated when the shipping date for a software product looms. This leads to problems post-implementation in terms of patches required to fix security defects or vulnerabilities. A simplistic answer is that if the code was correct in the first instance, then vulnerabilities would not exist. The reality of a complex software artefact is however, driven by other concerns. Rather than probing programs for coding errors that lead to vulnerabilities, it is perhaps more beneficial to look at the root causes of …

Examining The Dynamics Of Managing Information Systems Development Projects: A Control Loss Perspective, Ravi Narayanaswamy Dec 2009

Examining The Dynamics Of Managing Information Systems Development Projects: A Control Loss Perspective, Ravi Narayanaswamy

All Dissertations

The failure rate of information systems development (ISD) projects continues to pose a big challenge for organizations. The success rate of ISD projects is less then forty percent. Factors such as disagreements and miscommunications among project manager and team members, poor monitoring and intermediary problems contribute to project failure.
Agency theory and leader member exchange (LMX) theories offer potential explanations for project failure. In particular, three monitoring strategies - control strategy, decision rights, and influence tactics were found to be effective in promoting project success. LMX theorists suggest that achieving congruence between the manager and subordinate regarding each other actions …
