A Hybrid Test Architecture To Reduce Test Application Time In Full Scan Sequential Circuits, Priyankar Ghosh, Srobona Mitra, Indranil Sengupta, Bhargab B. Bhattacharya, Sharad C. Seth

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Abstract—Full scan based design technique is widely used to alleviate the complexity of test generation for sequential circuits. However, this approach leads to substantial increase in test application time, because of serial loading of vectors. Although BIST based approaches offer faster testing, they usually suffer from low fault coverage. In this paper, we propose a hybrid test architecture, which achieves significant reduction in test application time. The test suite consists of: (i) some external deterministic test vectors to be scanned in, and (ii) internally generated responses of the CUT to be re-applied as tests iteratively, in functional (non-scan) mode. The …

Chaos And Uncertainty, M. Thulasidas Jan 2009

Chaos And Uncertainty, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The end of 2008 in the finance industry can be summarized in two words – chaos and uncertainty. The subprime crisis, where everybody lost; the dizzying commodity price movements; the pink slip syndrome; the spectacular bank busts; and the gargantuan bail-outs all vouch for it.

A Fuzzy Hierarchical Decision Model And Its Application In Networking Datacenters And In Infrastructure Acquisitions And Design, Michael Khader Jan 2009

A Fuzzy Hierarchical Decision Model And Its Application In Networking Datacenters And In Infrastructure Acquisitions And Design, Michael Khader

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

According to several studies, an inordinate number of major business decisions to acquire, design, plan, and implement networking infrastructures fail. A networking infrastructure is a collaborative group of telecommunications systems providing services needed for a firm's operations and business growth. The analytical hierarchy process (AHP) is a well established decision-making process used to analyze decisions related to networking infrastructures. AHP is concerned with decomposing complex decisions into a set of factors and solutions. However, AHP has difficulties in handling uncertainty in decision information. This study addressed the research question of solutions to AHP deficiencies. The solutions were accomplished through the …

Sentiment Classification Of Reviews Using Sentiwordnet, Bruno Ohana, Brendan Tierney Jan 2009

Sentiment Classification Of Reviews Using Sentiwordnet, Bruno Ohana, Brendan Tierney

Conference papers

Sentiment classification concerns the use of automatic methods for predicting the orientation of subjective content on text documents, with applications on a number of areas including recommender and advertising systems, customer intelligence and information retrieval. SentiWordNet is an opinion lexicon derived from the WordNet database where each term is associated with numerical scores indicating positive and negative sentiment information. This research presents the results of applying the SentiWordNet lexical resource to the problem of automatic sentiment classification of film reviews. Our approach comprises counting positive and negative term scores to determine sentiment orientation, and an improvement is presented by building …

Investigating Data Mining Techniques For Extracting Information From Alzheimer's Disease Data, Vinh Quoc Dang Jan 2009

Investigating Data Mining Techniques For Extracting Information From Alzheimer's Disease Data, Vinh Quoc Dang

Theses : Honours

Data mining techniques have been used widely in many areas such as business, science, engineering and more recently in clinical medicine. These techniques allow an enormous amount of high dimensional data to be analysed for extraction of interesting information as well as the construction of models for prediction. One of the foci in health related research is Alzheimer's disease which is currently a non-curable disease where diagnosis can only be confirmed after death via an autopsy. Using multi-dimensional data and the applications of data mining techniques, researchers hope to find biomarkers that will diagnose Alzheimer's disease as early as possible. …

Hardware Accelerated Sequence Alignment With Traceback, Scott Lloyd, Quinn O. Snell Jan 2009

Hardware Accelerated Sequence Alignment With Traceback, Scott Lloyd, Quinn O. Snell

Faculty Publications

Biological sequence alignment is an essential tool used in molecular biology and biomedical applications. The growing volume of genetic data and the complexity of sequence alignment present a challenge in obtaining alignment results in a timely manner. Known methods to accelerate alignment on reconfigurable hardware only address sequence comparison, limit the sequence length, or exhibit memory and I/O bottlenecks. A space-efficient, global sequence alignment algorithm and architecture is presented that accelerates the forward scan and traceback in hardware without memory and I/O limitations. With 256 processing elements in FPGA technology, a performance gain over 300 times that of a desktop …

Author Entropy Vs. File Size In The Gnome Suite Of Applications, Jason R. Casebolt, Daniel P. Delorey, Charles D. Knutson, Jonathan Krein, Alexander C. Maclean Jan 2009

Author Entropy Vs. File Size In The Gnome Suite Of Applications, Jason R. Casebolt, Daniel P. Delorey, Charles D. Knutson, Jonathan Krein, Alexander C. Maclean

Faculty Publications

We present the results of a study in which author entropy was used to characterize author contributions per file. Our analysis reveals three patterns: banding in the data, uneven distribution of data across bands, and file size dependent distributions within bands. Our re- sults suggest that when two authors contribute to a file, large files are more likely to have a dominant author than smaller files.

Effects Of Similarity Metrics On Document Clustering, Rushikesh Veni Jan 2009

Effects Of Similarity Metrics On Document Clustering, Rushikesh Veni

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Document clustering or unsupervised document classification is an automated process of grouping documents with similar content. A typical technique uses a similarity function to compare documents. In the literature, many similarity functions such as dot product or cosine measures are proposed for the comparison operator.

For the thesis, we evaluate the effects a similarity function may have on clustering. We start by representing a document and a query, both as a vector of high-dimensional space corresponding to the keywords followed by using an appropriate distance measure in k-means to compute similarity between the document vector and the query vector to …

Computational Techniques For Reducing Spectra Of The Giant Planets In Our Solar System, Holly L. Grimes Jan 2009

Computational Techniques For Reducing Spectra Of The Giant Planets In Our Solar System, Holly L. Grimes

Dissertations and Theses

The dynamic atmospheres of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune provide a rich source of meteorological phenomena for scientists to study. To investigate these planets, scientists obtain spectral images of these bodies using various instruments including the Cooled Mid-Infrared Camera and Spectrometer (COMICS) at the Subaru Telescope Facility at Mauna Kea, Hawaii. These spectral images are two-dimensional arrays of double precision floating point values that have been read from a detector array. Such images must be reduced before the information they contain can be analyzed. The reduction process for spectral images from COMICS involves several steps:

1. Sky subtraction: the …

Locating And Tracking Objects By Efficient Comparison Of Real And Predicted Synthetic Video Imagery, Damian M. Lyons, D. Paul Benjamin Jan 2009

Locating And Tracking Objects By Efficient Comparison Of Real And Predicted Synthetic Video Imagery, Damian M. Lyons, D. Paul Benjamin

CSIS Technical Reports

The paper uses a 3D simulation engine to generate predicted imagery for tracking objects with complex behavior and compares that imagery against real video. Salient points and an affine transformation align real and synthetic scenes so that synchronization differences are suppressed and meaningful content differences are emphasized.

A Two-Population Insurgency In Colombia: Quasi-Predator-Prey Models - A Trend Towards Simplicity, John A. Adam, John A. Sokolowski, Catherine M. Banks Jan 2009

A Two-Population Insurgency In Colombia: Quasi-Predator-Prey Models - A Trend Towards Simplicity, John A. Adam, John A. Sokolowski, Catherine M. Banks

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

A sequence of analytic mathematical models has been developed in the context of the "low-level insurgency" in Colombia, from 1993 to the present. They are based on generalizations of the two-population "predator-prey" model commonly applied in ecological modeling, and interestingly, the less sophisticated models yield more insight into the problem than the more complicated ones, but the formalism is available to adapt the model "upwards" in the event that more data becomes available, or as the situation increases in complexity. Specifically, so-called "forcing terms" were included initially in the coupled differential equations to represent the effects of government policies towards …

A Protocol Suite For Wireless Personal Area Networks, Karl E. Persson Jan 2009

A Protocol Suite For Wireless Personal Area Networks, Karl E. Persson

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

A Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) is an ad hoc network that consists of devices that surround an individual or an object. Bluetooth® technology is especially suitable for formation of WPANs due to the pervasiveness of devices with Bluetooth® chipsets, its operation in the unlicensed Industrial, Scientific, Medical (ISM) frequency band, and its interference resilience. Bluetooth® technology has great potential to become the de facto standard for communication between heterogeneous devices in WPANs.

The piconet, which is the basic Bluetooth® networking unit, utilizes a Master/Slave (MS) configuration that permits only a single master and up to …

Efficient Techniques For Relevance Feedback Processing In Content-Based Image Retrieval, Danzhou Liu Jan 2009

Efficient Techniques For Relevance Feedback Processing In Content-Based Image Retrieval, Danzhou Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In content-based image retrieval (CBIR) systems, there are two general types of search: target search and category search. Unlike queries in traditional database systems, users in most cases cannot specify an ideal query to retrieve the desired results for either target search or category search in multimedia database systems, and have to rely on iterative feedback to refine their query. Efficient evaluation of such iterative queries can be a challenge, especially when the multimedia database contains a large number of entries, and the search needs many iterations, and when the underlying distance measure is computationally expensive. The overall processing costs, …

Learning Semantic Features For Visual Recognition, Jingen Liu Jan 2009

Learning Semantic Features For Visual Recognition, Jingen Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Visual recognition (e.g., object, scene and action recognition) is an active area of research in computer vision due to its increasing number of real-world applications such as video (image) indexing and search, intelligent surveillance, human-machine interaction, robot navigation, etc. Effective modeling of the objects, scenes and actions is critical for visual recognition. Recently, bag of visual words (BoVW) representation, in which the image patches or video cuboids are quantized into visual words (i.e., mid-level features) based on their appearance similarity using clustering, has been widely and successfully explored. The advantages of this representation are: no explicit detection of objects or …

Realnav: Exploring Natural User Interfaces For Locomotion In Video Games, Brian Williamson Jan 2009

Realnav: Exploring Natural User Interfaces For Locomotion In Video Games, Brian Williamson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We present an exploration into realistic locomotion interfaces in video games using spatially convenient input hardware. In particular, we use Nintendo Wii Remotes to create natural mappings between user actions and their representation in a video game. Targeting American Football video games, we used the role of the quarterback as an exemplar since the game player needs to maneuver effectively in a small area, run down the field, and perform evasive gestures such as spinning, jumping, or the "juke". In our study, we developed three locomotion techniques. The first technique used a single Wii Remote, placed anywhere on the user's …

New Computational Approaches For Multiple Rna Alignment And Rna Search, Daniel Deblasio Jan 2009

New Computational Approaches For Multiple Rna Alignment And Rna Search, Daniel Deblasio

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis we explore the the theory and history behind RNA alignment. Normal sequence alignments as studied by computer scientists can be completed in O(n2) time in the naive case. The process involves taking two input sequences and finding the list of edits that can transform one sequence into the other. This process is applied to biology in many forms, such as the creation of multiple alignments and the search of genomic sequences. When you take into account the RNA sequence structure the problem becomes even harder. Multiple RNA structure alignment is particularly challenging because covarying mutations make sequence …

Corporate Voting, Paul H. Edelman, Robert B. Thompson Jan 2009

Corporate Voting, Paul H. Edelman, Robert B. Thompson

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Discussion of shareholder voting frequently begins against a background of the democratic expectations and justifications present in decision-making in the public sphere. Directors are assumed to be agents of the shareholders in much the same way that public officers are representatives of citizens. Recent debates about majority voting and shareholder nomination of directors illustrate this pattern. Yet the corporate process differs in significant ways, partly because the market for shares permits a form of intensity voting and lets markets mediate the outcome in a way that would be foreign to the public setting and partly because the shareholders' role is …

Opportunistic Sensing: Security Challenges For The New Paradigm, Apu Kapadia, David Kotz, Nikos Triandopoulos Jan 2009

Opportunistic Sensing: Security Challenges For The New Paradigm, Apu Kapadia, David Kotz, Nikos Triandopoulos

Dartmouth Scholarship

We study the security challenges that arise in Opportunistic people-centric sensing, a new sensing paradigm leveraging humans as part of the sensing infrastructure. Most prior sensor-network research has focused on collecting and processing environmental data using a static topology and an application-aware infrastructure, whereas opportunistic sensing involves collecting, storing, processing and fusing large volumes of data related to everyday human activities. This highly dynamic and mobile setting, where humans are the central focus, presents new challenges for information security, because data originates from sensors carried by people— not tiny sensors thrown in the forest or attached to animals. In this …

Intrusion Detection And Prevention System: Cgi Attacks, Tejinder Aulakh Jan 2009

Intrusion Detection And Prevention System: Cgi Attacks, Tejinder Aulakh

Master's Projects

Over the past decade, the popularity of the Internet has been on the rise. The Internet is being used by its clients to access both static and dynamic data residing on remote servers. In the client-server interaction, the client asks the server to provide information, and, in addition, the server may also request that clients provide information such as in “web forms.” Therefore, the Internet is being used for many different purposes which also include the web servers collecting the information from the clients. Consequently, attacks on the web servers have been increasing over the years. Due to the fact …

Heuristic Search Cryptanalysis Of The Zodiac 340 Cipher, Pallavi Kanagalakatte Basavaraju Jan 2009

Heuristic Search Cryptanalysis Of The Zodiac 340 Cipher, Pallavi Kanagalakatte Basavaraju

Master's Projects

The Zodiac 340 cipher is one of the most famous unsolved ciphers of all time. It was allegedly written by “the Zodiac”, whose identity remains unknown to date. The Zodiac was a serial killer who killed a number of people in and around the San Francisco Bay area during the 1960s. He is confirmed to have seven victims, two of whom survived [1], although in taunting letters to the news media he claims to have killed 37 people. During this time, an encrypted message known as the Zodiac 408 cipher was mailed to 3 different newspapers in the San Francisco …

Available Bandwidth Inference Based On Node-Centric Clusters, Seetharam Samptur Jan 2009

Available Bandwidth Inference Based On Node-Centric Clusters, Seetharam Samptur

Master's Projects

End-to-End Available Bandwidth (AB) is a real-time network metric that is useful for a wide range of applications including content distribution networks, multimedia streaming applications and overlay networks. In a large network with several thousand nodes, it is infeasible to perform all-pair bandwidth measurements as AB measurements could induce traffic overhead along the path. Also because of its dynamic nature, the measurements have to be performed frequently thus imposing significant probe traffic overhead on the network. In this paper, we discuss a clustering based distributed algorithm to infer the AB between any pair of nodes in a large network based …

Clustering Algorithm For Enhanced Bibliography Visualization, Sriram Krishnan Jan 2009

Clustering Algorithm For Enhanced Bibliography Visualization, Sriram Krishnan

Master's Projects

A Bibliography is a list of books, publications, journals etc., with details such as authors and references. Visualization could be used as a data analysis tool to represent various types of data, analyze huge chunks of data easily and arrive at interesting results. The idea of this project is to provide a medium which eases the combination of bibliography with visualization. Though there are many sources of bibliographic data like the Digital Bibliography and Library Project (DBLP), Citeseer, Google Scholar, none of these data could be used directly for deducing relations between various entities or for visualizing the relationship between …

Methods And Design Issues For Next Generation Network-Aware Applications, Andrei Hutanu Jan 2009

Methods And Design Issues For Next Generation Network-Aware Applications, Andrei Hutanu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Networks are becoming an essential component of modern cyberinfrastructure and this work describes methods of designing distributed applications for high-speed networks to improve application scalability, performance and capabilities. As the amount of data generated by scientific applications continues to grow, to be able to handle and process it, applications should be designed to use parallel, distributed resources and high-speed networks. For scalable application design developers should move away from the current component-based approach and implement instead an integrated, non-layered architecture where applications can use specialized low-level interfaces. The main focus of this research is on interactive, collaborative visualization of large …

3d Reconstruction Using Multi-View Imaging System, Conglin Huang Jan 2009

3d Reconstruction Using Multi-View Imaging System, Conglin Huang

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

This thesis presents a new system that reconstructs the 3D representation of dental casts. To maintain the integrity of the 3D representation, a standard model is built to cover the blind spots that the camera cannot reach. The standard model is obtained by scanning a real human mouth model with a laser scanner. Then the model is simplified by an algorithm which is based on iterative contraction of vertex pairs. The simplified standard model uses a local parametrization method to obtain the curvature information. The system uses a digital camera and a square tube mirror in front of the camera …

Online child sexual abuse is an increasingly visible problem in society today. The introduction, growth and utilization of information and telecommunication technologies (ICTs) have been accompanied by an increase in illegal activities. With respect to cyberspace the Internet is an attractive environment to sex offenders. In addition to giving them greater access to minors, extending their reach from a limited geographical area to victims all around the world, it allows criminals to alter or conceal their identities. Sexual predators, stalkers, child pornographers and child traffickers can use various concealment techniques to make it more difficult for investigators to identify them …

Correlating Orphaned Windows Registry Data Structures, Damir Kahvedžić, Tahar Kechadi Jan 2009

Correlating Orphaned Windows Registry Data Structures, Damir Kahvedžić, Tahar Kechadi

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Recently, it has been shown that deleted entries of the Microsoft Windows registry (keys) may still reside in the system files once the entries have been deleted from the active database. Investigating the complete keys in context may be extremely important from both a Forensic Investigation point of view and a legal point of view where a lack of context can bring doubt to an argument. In this paper we formalise the registry behaviour and show how a retrieved value may not maintain a relation to the part of the registry it belonged to and hence lose that context. We …
