Viewing Virtual Property Ownership Through The Lens Of Innovation, Ryan G. Vacca Jan 2008

Viewing Virtual Property Ownership Through The Lens Of Innovation, Ryan G. Vacca

Law Faculty Scholarship

Over the past several years scholars have wrestled with how property rights in items created in virtual worlds should be conceptualized. Regardless of how the property is conceptualized and what property theory best fits, most agree the law ought to recognize virtual property as property and vest someone with those rights.

Women And Technology: Reversing The Trends Of Attrition And Obtaining A Balance, Gondy Leroy, Kristin M. Tolle, Linda Perkins

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Many reports and technical news bulletins presented by organizations such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) highlight that few female and minority college students are choosing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields of study or careers. For those who choose STEM fields, attrition both during education and in the workplace is pervasive. NSF reports in its 2006 Science Indicators that women account for only 27% of the bachelor’s degrees in computer sciences. And although the …

Natural Language Processing And E-Government: Crime Information Extraction From Heterogeneous Data Sources, Chih Hao Ku '12, Alicia Iriberri '06, Gondy Leroy Jan 2008

Natural Language Processing And E-Government: Crime Information Extraction From Heterogeneous Data Sources, Chih Hao Ku '12, Alicia Iriberri '06, Gondy Leroy

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Much information that could help solve and prevent crimes is never gathered because the reporting methods available to citizens and law enforcement personnel are not optimal. Detectives do not have sufficient time to interview crime victims and witnesses. Moreover, many victims and witnesses are too scared or embarrassed to report incidents. We are developing an interviewing system that will help collect such information. We report here on one component, the crime information extraction module, which uses natural language processing to extract crime information from police reports, newspaper articles, and victims’ and witnesses’ crime narratives. We tested our approach with two …

Validation Of An Nsp-Based (Negative Selection Pattern) Gene Family Identification Strategy, Ronald L. Frank, Cyriac Kandoth, Fikret Erçal

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Background: Gene family identification from ESTs can be a valuable resource for analysis of genome evolution but presents unique challenges in organisms for which the entire genome is not yet sequenced. We have developed a novel gene family identification method based on negative selection patterns (NSP) between family members to screen EST-generated contigs. This strategy was tested on five known gene families in Arabidopsis to see if individual paralogs could be identified with accuracy from EST data alone when compared to the actual gene sequences in this fully sequenced genome. Results: The NSP method uniquely identified family members in all …

What Is Approximate Reasoning?, Sebastian Rudolph, Tuvshintur Tserendorj, Pascal Hitzler Jan 2008

What Is Approximate Reasoning?, Sebastian Rudolph, Tuvshintur Tserendorj, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Approximate reasoning for the Semantic Web is based on the idea of sacrificing soundness or completeness for a significant speed-up of reasoning. This is to be done in such a way that the number of introduced mistakes is at least outweighed by the obtained speed-up. When pursuing such approximate reasoning approaches, however, it is important to be critical not only about appropriate application domains, but also about the quality of the resulting approximate reasoning procedures. With different approximate reasoning algorithms discussed and developed in the literature, it needs to be clarified how these approaches can be compared, i.e. what it …

Web-Based Service Exchange System For Agents And Humans Alike, Evens Jean, Machigar Ongtang, A. R. Hurson Jan 2008

Web-Based Service Exchange System For Agents And Humans Alike, Evens Jean, Machigar Ongtang, A. R. Hurson

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Semantic Web research aims at bridging the gap between how humans and agents process information readily available on the Internet. One of the great challenges to this goal lies in the fact that humans, contrary to agents, can extract the meaning of words based on its context. This work introduces a service exchange system for the Web that allows agents to intelligently process information, as would humans. This is achieved by the use of thesauri to help agents resolve semantic heterogeneity in the information being processed. The framework for the exchange system has been realized under the aglet platform on …

Cheap Boolean Role Constructors For Description Logics, Sebastian Rudolph, Markus Krotzsch, Pascal Hitzler Jan 2008

Cheap Boolean Role Constructors For Description Logics, Sebastian Rudolph, Markus Krotzsch, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

We investigate the possibility of incorporating Boolean role constructors on simple roles into some of today's most popular description logics, focussing on cases where those extensions do not increase complexity of reasoning. We show that the expressive DLs SHOIQ and SROIQ, serving as the logical underpinning of OWL and the forthcoming OWL 2, can accommodate arbitrary Boolean expressions. The prominent OWL-fragment SHIQ can be safely extended by safe role expressions, and the tractable fragments EL++ and DLP retain tractability if extended by conjunction on roles, where in the case of DLP the restriction on role simplicity can even be discarded.

Improving Knowledge Retention In A Technical Subject By Diversifying The Learning Experience, Lubomir Stanchev Jan 2008

Improving Knowledge Retention In A Technical Subject By Diversifying The Learning Experience, Lubomir Stanchev

Computer Science and Software Engineering

There is no silver bullet when it comes to successful teaching. Some scholars believe that traditional lectures are the panacea, while others are firm believers in active and cooperative learning. In this paper I report on my experience with the two approaches and explore the idea of combining them. In particular, I will argue that diversifying the avenues in which students are exposed to knowledge in a technical discipline, such as computer science, can spark their enthusiasm and make the learning experience more enjoyable and productive.
