Dynamic Energy Aware Task Scheduling For Periodic Tasks Using Expected Execution Time Feedback, Sachin Pawaskar, Hesham Ali
Dynamic Energy Aware Task Scheduling For Periodic Tasks Using Expected Execution Time Feedback, Sachin Pawaskar, Hesham Ali
Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Scheduling dependent tasks is one of the most challenging problems in parallel and distributed systems. It is known to be computationally intractable in its general form as well as several restricted cases. An interesting application of scheduling is in the area of energy awareness for mobile battery operated devices where minimizing the energy utilized is the most important scheduling policy consideration. A number of heuristics have been developed for this consideration. In this paper, we study the scheduling problem for a particular battery model. In the proposed work, we show how to enhance a well know approach of accounting for …
A Framework For Relationship Pattern Languages, Sudarshan Murthy, David Maier
A Framework For Relationship Pattern Languages, Sudarshan Murthy, David Maier
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
A relationship pattern is an abstraction of a recurring need when establishing relationships among information elements in specific contexts. By developing or leveraging a relationship pattern, modelers can solve a class of problems once and describe many relationship types at once. We have developed a framework for specifying relationship patterns and pattern languages (sets of patterns) in both modeling-language-independent and modeling-language-specific ways. We describe this framework both informally and formally. We provide examples of some commonly observed relationship patterns and show how to use them in ER with the help of a relationship pattern language called Exemplar. We also provide …

Integrating Temporal Difference Methods And Self‐Organizing Neural Networks For Reinforcement Learning With Delayed Evaluative Feedback, Ah-Hwee Tan, Ning Lu, Dan Xiao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper presents a neural architecture for learning category nodes encoding mappings across multimodal patterns involving sensory inputs, actions, and rewards. By integrating adaptive resonance theory (ART) and temporal difference (TD) methods, the proposed neural model, called TD fusion architecture for learning, cognition, and navigation (TD-FALCON), enables an autonomous agent to adapt and function in a dynamic environment with immediate as well as delayed evaluative feedback (reinforcement) signals. TD-FALCON learns the value functions of the state-action space estimated through on-policy and off-policy TD learning methods, specifically state-action-reward-state-action (SARSA) and Q-learning. The learned value functions are then used to determine the …
Multimodal News Story Clustering With Pairwise Visual Near-Duplicate Constraint, Xiao Wu, Chong-Wah Ngo, Alexander G. Hauptmann
Multimodal News Story Clustering With Pairwise Visual Near-Duplicate Constraint, Xiao Wu, Chong-Wah Ngo, Alexander G. Hauptmann
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Story clustering is a critical step for news retrieval, topic mining, and summarization. Nonetheless, the task remains highly challenging owing to the fact that news topics exhibit clusters of varying densities, shapes, and sizes. Traditional algorithms are found to be ineffective in mining these types of clusters. This paper offers a new perspective by exploring the pairwise visual cues deriving from near-duplicate keyframes (NDK) for constraint-based clustering. We propose a constraint-driven co-clustering algorithm (CCC), which utilizes the near-duplicate constraints built on top of text, to mine topic-related stories and the outliers. With CCC, the duality between stories and their underlying …

Wikipedia 1 is a very large and successful Web 2.0 example. As the number of Wikipedia articles and contributors grows at a very fast pace, there are also increasing disputes occurring among the contributors. Disputes often happen in articles with controversial content. They also occur frequently among contributors who are "aggressive" or controversial in their personalities. In this paper, we aim to identify controversial articles in Wikipedia. We propose three models, namely the Basic model and two Controversy Rank (CR) models. These models draw clues from collaboration and edit history instead of interpreting the actual articles or edited content. While …
Using Plsi-U To Detect Insider Threats By Datamining Email, James S. Okolica, Gilbert L. Peterson, Robert F. Mills
Using Plsi-U To Detect Insider Threats By Datamining Email, James S. Okolica, Gilbert L. Peterson, Robert F. Mills
Faculty Publications
Despite a technology bias that focuses on external electronic threats, insiders pose the greatest threat to an organisation. This paper discusses an approach to assist investigators in identifying potential insider threats. We discern employees' interests from e-mail using an extended version of PLSI. These interests are transformed into implicit and explicit social network graphs, which are used to locate potential insiders by identifying individuals who feel alienated from the organisation or have a hidden interest in a sensitive topic. By applying this technique to the Enron e-mail corpus, a small number of employees appear as potential insider threats.

Localized Bridging Centrality For Distributed Network Analysis, Soumendra Nanda, David Kotz
Localized Bridging Centrality For Distributed Network Analysis, Soumendra Nanda, David Kotz
Computer Science Technical Reports
Centrality is a concept often used in social network analysis to study different properties of networks that are modeled as graphs. We present a new centrality metric called Localized Bridging Centrality (LBC). LBC is based on the Bridging Centrality (BC) metric that Hwang et al. recently introduced. Bridging nodes are nodes that are located in between highly connected regions. LBC is capable of identifying bridging nodes with an accuracy comparable to that of the BC metric for most networks. As the name suggests, we use only local information from surrounding nodes to compute the LBC metric, while, global knowledge is …

Locating The Source Of Topological Error In Reconstructed 3d Models, Eric Firestone, Craig Povey, Zoë J. Wood
Computer Science and Software Engineering
Although range scanning technology has offered great improvements to digital model creation in recent years, it has also introduced some new concerns. Specifically, recent work shows that topological errors such as tiny handles can significantly lower the overall quality of range-scanned models for down-stream applications (such as simplification and parameterization). In this paper we present our investigation into the source of this topological error in the range scanning process, and our methods to alleviate the error. We concentrated our investigation of the scanning process on: (1) signal noise or calibration error in the laser scanner (resulting in bad data points) …
Abstraction, Extension And Structural Auditing With The Umls Semantic Network, Yan Chen
Abstraction, Extension And Structural Auditing With The Umls Semantic Network, Yan Chen
Dissertations
The Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) is a two-level biomedical terminological knowledge base, consisting of the Metathesaurus (META) and the Semantic Network (SN), which is an upper-level ontology of broad categories called semantic types (STs). The two levels are related via assignments of one or more STs to each concept of the META.
Although the SN provides a high-level abstraction for the META, it is not compact enough. Various metaschemas, which are compact higher-level abstraction networks of the SN, have been derived. A methodology is presented to evaluate and compare two given metaschemas, based on their structural properties. A consolidation …

Ontology Learning For The Semantic Deep Web, Yoo Jung An
Dissertations
Ontologies could play an important role in assisting users in their search for Web pages. This dissertation considers the problem of constructing natural ontologies that support users in their Web search efforts and increase the number of relevant Web pages that are returned. To achieve this goal, this thesis suggests combining the Deep Web information, which consists of dynamically generated Web pages and cannot be indexed by the existing automated Web crawlers, with ontologies, resulting in the Semantic Deep Web. The Deep Web information is exploited in three different ways: extracting attributes from the Deep Web data sources automatically, generating …
The Development And Evaluation Of Software To Foster Professional Development In Educational Assessment, Morgan C. Benton
The Development And Evaluation Of Software To Foster Professional Development In Educational Assessment, Morgan C. Benton
Dissertations
This dissertation sought to answer the question: Is it possible to build a software tool that will allow teachers to write better multiple-choice questions? The thesis proceeded from the finding that the quality of teaching is very influential in the amount that students learn. A basic premise of this research, then, is that improving teachers will improve learning. With this foundation, the next question became what area of teaching to improve. The literature on educational assessment indicated that teachers lack competence at effective assessment, particularly in the area of multiple-choice question generation. It is likely that improvement in this area …
Some Combinational Optimization Problems On Radio Network Communication And Machine Scheduling, Xin Wang
Some Combinational Optimization Problems On Radio Network Communication And Machine Scheduling, Xin Wang
Dissertations
The combinatorial optimization problems coming from two areas are studied in this dissertation: network communication and machine scheduling.
In the network communication area, the complexity of distributed broadcasting and distributed gossiping is studied in the setting of random networks. Two different models are considered: one is random geometric networks, the main model used to study properties of sensor and ad-hoc networks, where ri points are randomly placed in a unit square and two points are connected by an edge if they are at most a certain fixed distance r from each other. The other model is the so-called line-of-sight networks, …
User Evaluation Of The Performance Of Information Systems, Edward Mahinda
User Evaluation Of The Performance Of Information Systems, Edward Mahinda
Dissertations
Information technologies (IT) are considered the primary survival factor for many organizations and the most critical success factor in businesses today. To justify the necessary investment in IT, user evaluation of information systems' performance in organizations is a key consideration. This research investigated a comprehensive and convenient means for end users to assess this performance.
Among the existing theories and models on the evaluation of information system performance based on intrinsic technological properties, the Web of System Performance (WOSP) model provides the most comprehensive basis for information system evaluation, and therefore merited further investigation. The research question was how well …
Complex Adaptive Systems Based Data Integration : Theory And Applications, Eliahu Rohn
Complex Adaptive Systems Based Data Integration : Theory And Applications, Eliahu Rohn
Dissertations
Data Definition Languages (DDLs) have been created and used to represent data in programming languages and in database dictionaries. This representation includes descriptions in the form of data fields and relations in the form of a hierarchy, with the common exception of relational databases where relations are flat. Network computing created an environment that enables relatively easy and inexpensive exchange of data. What followed was the creation of new DDLs claiming better support for automatic data integration. It is uncertain from the literature if any real progress has been made toward achieving an ideal state or limit condition of automatic …
Leader Delegation And Trust In Global Software Teams, Suling Zhang
Leader Delegation And Trust In Global Software Teams, Suling Zhang
Dissertations
Virtual teams are an important work structure in global software development. The distributed team structure enables access to a diverse set of expertise which is often not available in one location, to a cheaper labor force, and to a potentially accelerated development process that uses a twenty-four hour work structure.
Many software teams are partially distributed, that is, part of the team is colocated. Such partially distributed global software teams are an important work structure in software development projects. However, little is known about what affects or improves team members’ motivation and job satisfaction in the partially distributed environment. This …
Taux : A System For Evaluating Sound Feedback In Navigational Tasks, Robert J. Lutz
Taux : A System For Evaluating Sound Feedback In Navigational Tasks, Robert J. Lutz
Dissertations
This thesis presents the design and development of an evaluation system for generating audio displays that provide feedback to persons performing navigation tasks. It first develops the need for such a system by describing existing wayfinding solutions, investigating new electronic location-based methods that have the potential of changing these solutions and examining research conducted on relevant audio information representation techniques. An evaluation system that supports the manipulation of two basic classes of audio display is then described. Based on prior work on wayfinding with audio display, research questions are developed that investigate the viability of different audio displays. These are …
Rna Genome Annotation With A Focus On T. Brucei, Brett Bucci
Rna Genome Annotation With A Focus On T. Brucei, Brett Bucci
Theses
The goal of this project is to identify untranslated regions (UTRs) and UTR-indicating patterns in the genome of T. brucei. T. brucei is an interesting organism, and as the cause of African sleeping sickness -- which infects 300,000-500,000 people and a significant number of cattle annually -- is currently the subject of considerable research. Using existing algorithms, several patterns have been found that may lead to more complete UTR annotations in the T. brucei genome. The most encouraging sequence is the 11-base sequence GAGGGIICG]TGGGG, which appears in five hypothetical genes near the tail. Discovery of several such sequences could guide …

Farmer: A Novel Approach To File Access Correlation Mining And Evaluation Reference Model For Optimizing Peta-Scale File System Performance, Peng Xia, Dan Feng, Hong Jiang, Lei Tian, Fang Wang
School of Computing: Technical Reports
File correlations have become an increasingly important consideration for performance enhancement in peta-scale storage systems. Previous studies on file correlationsmainly concern with two aspects of files: file access sequence and semantic attribute. Based on mining with regard to these two aspects of file systems, various strategies have been proposed to optimize the overall system performance. Unfortunately, all of these studies consider either file access sequences or semantic attribute information separately and in isolation, thus unable to accurately and effectively mine file correlations, especially in large-scale distributed storage systems.
This paper introduces a novel File Access coRrelation Mining and Evaluation Referencemodel …
Simulation And Visualization Of Environments With Multidimensional Time, Luther A. Tychonievich
Simulation And Visualization Of Environments With Multidimensional Time, Luther A. Tychonievich
Theses and Dissertations
This work introduces the notion of computational hypertime, or the simulation and visualization of hypothetical environments possessing multidimensional time. An overview of hypertime is provided, including an intuitive visualization paradigm and a discussion of the failure of common simulation techniques when extended to include multidimensional time. A condition for differential equations describing hypertime motion to be amenable to standard time-iterative simulation techniques is provided, but is not satisfied by any known model of physics. An alternate simulation algorithm involving iterative refinement of entire equations of motion is presented, with an example implementation to solve elastic collisions in hypertime. An artificial intelligence algorithm for …

Dealing With The Malicious Insider, Andy Jones, Carl Colwill
Australian Information Security Management Conference
This paper looks at a number of issues relating to the malicious insider and the nature of motivation, loyalty and the type of attacks that occur. The paper also examines the changing environmental, social, cultural and business issues that have resulted in an increased exposure to the insider threat. The paper then discusses a range of measures that can be taken to reduce both the likelihood of an attack and the impact that such an attack may have. These measures should be driven by focused and effective risk management processes.

Prior research has suggested that integrating security features with user goals and increasing their visibility would improve the usability of the associated functionalities. This paper investigates how these approaches affect the efficiency of use and the level of user satisfaction. The user interface of Word 2007 was modified according to these principles, with usability tests being conducted with both the original and the modified user interfaces. The results suggest that integrating security features with user goals improves the efficiency of use, but the impacts upon user satisfaction cannot be clearly identified based on the collected data. No indications of any …
