Continuing advances in the capabilities of communication and information technologies provide a wide array of interesting ways for people to collaborate across space, time, cultures, and organizational boundaries. While the use of collaboration technologies spreads, researchers seek answers to understanding how best to match different technology capabilities with the tasks that teams need to accomplish. Different theories of task-technology fit have been promoted and these theories help to identify key issues of interest to both researchers and practitioners who seek the answer to the best technology support for collaboration. We examine existing theories of fit for collaboration technology and propose …
Improving Query Efficiency Of Multiresolution Data Aggregation For Analytical Exploration Of Large Relational Dataset, Yu-Ting Huang
Improving Query Efficiency Of Multiresolution Data Aggregation For Analytical Exploration Of Large Relational Dataset, Yu-Ting Huang
Masters Theses
Tree structures are developed to organize the data more efficiently by using fewer resources for searching records. This thesis investigates the tree's actual structure on the hard disk to see the influence of different kinds of structures on the tree building time and query execution time. In order to improve efficiency, one multi-file structure and two reorganization structures, BFS and DFS, are examined to achieve this goal. The results indicate that two reorganization structures on KDB-tree structure can significantly improve the query execution time in large data sets and multi-file structure can slightly improve the TPIE lover level building time.

The worldwide use of handheld devices (personal digital assistants, cell phones, etc.) with wireless connectivity will reach 2.6 billion units this year and 4 billion by 2010. More specifically, these handheld devices have become an integral part of industrial applications. These devices form pervasive ad hoc wireless networks that aide in industry applications. However, pervasive computing is susceptible and vulnerable to malicious active and passive snoopers. This is due to the unavoidable interdevice dependency, as well as a common shared medium, very transitory connectivity, and the absence of a fixed trust infrastructure. In order to ensure security and privacy in …
Enforcing Behavioral Constraints In Evolving Aspect-Oriented Programs, Raffi Khatchadourian, Johan Dovland, Neelam Soundarajan
Enforcing Behavioral Constraints In Evolving Aspect-Oriented Programs, Raffi Khatchadourian, Johan Dovland, Neelam Soundarajan
Publications and Research
Reasoning, specification, and verification of Aspect-Oriented (AO) programs presents unique challenges especially as such programs evolve over time. Components, base-code and aspects alike, may be easily added, removed, interchanged, or presently unavailable at unpredictable frequencies. Consequently, modular reasoning of such programs is highly attractive as it enables tractable evolution, otherwise necessitating that the entire program be reexamined each time a component is changed. It is well known, however, that modular reasoning about AO programs is difficult. In this paper, we present our ongoing work in constructing a rely-guarantee style reasoning system for the Aspect-Oriented Programming (AOP) paradigm, adopting a trace-based …

Refocusing In 802.11 Wireless Measurement, Udayan Deshpande, Chris Mcdonald, David Kotz
Dartmouth Scholarship
The edge of the Internet is increasingly wireless. To understand the Internet, one must understand the edge, and yet the measurement of wireless networks poses many new challenges. IEEE 802.11 networks support multiple wireless channels and any monitoring technique involves capturing traffic on each of these channels to gather a representative sample of frames from the network. We call this procedure \emphchannel sampling, in which each sniffer visits each channel periodically, resulting in a sample of the traffic on each of the channels. \par This sampling approach may be sufficient, for example, for a system administrator or anomaly detection module …

Comp-Ref: A Technique To Guide The Delegation Of Responsibilities To Components In Software Systems, Subhajit Datta, Robert Van Engelen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In software systems, components collaborate to collectively fulfill requirements. A key concern of software design is the delegation of responsibilities to components such that user needs are most expediently met. This paper presents the COMP-REF technique based on a set of metrics and Linear Programming (LP) to guide the allocation of responsibilities of a system’s components. We define the metrics Aptitude Index, Requirement Set, and Concordance Index to extract some design characteristics and use these metrics in an optimization algorithm. Results from experimental validation of the COMP-REF technique across a range of software systems are reported. We also …

Building A Web Of Trust Without Explicit Trust Ratings, Young Ae Kim, Minh-Tam Le, Hady W. Lauw, Ee Peng Lim, Haifeng Liu, Jaideep Srivastava
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A satisfactory and robust trust model is gaining importance in addressing information overload, and helping users collect reliable information in online communities. Current research on trust prediction strongly relies on a web of trust, which is directly collected from users based on previous experience. However, the web of trust is not always available in online communities and even though it is available, it is often too sparse to predict the trust value between two unacquainted people with high accuracy. In this paper, we propose a framework to derive degree of trust based on users' expertise and users' affinity for certain …

Measurement And Estimation Of Network Qos Among Peer Xbox 360 Game Players, Youngki Lee, Sharad Agarwal, Chris Butcher, Jitu Padhye
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The research community has proposed several techniques for estimating the quality of network paths in terms of delay and capacity. However, few techniques have been studied in the context of large deployed applications. Network gaming is an application that is extremely sensitive to network path quality [1,2,3]. Yet, the quality of network paths among players of large, wide-area games and techniques for estimating it have not received much attention from the research community.

Rate-Diversity And Resource-Aware Broadcast And Multicast In Multi-Rate Wireless Mesh Networks, Bao Hua Liu, Chun Tung Chou, Archan Misra, Sanjay Jha
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper focuses on the problem of increasing the traffic capacity (volume of admissible traffic) of broadcast and multicast flows in a wireless mesh network (WMN). We study and suggest routing strategies where the process of constructing the forwarding tree considers three distinct features: (a) the ability of individual mesh nodes to perform link-layer broadcasts at multiple rates, (b) the wireless broadcast advantage, whereby a single broadcast transmission covers multiple neighboring receivers and (c) the residual transmission capacity at a WMN node, subject to intereference-based constraints from existing traffic flows in its neighborhood. Our metric of interest is the total …

Efficient Optimistic Fair Exchange Secure In The Multi-User Setting And Chosen-Key Model Without Random Oracles, Qiong Huang, Guomin Yang, Duncan S. Wong, Willy Susilo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Optimistic fair exchange is a kind of protocols to solve the problem of fair exchange between two parties. Almost all the previous work on this topic are provably secure only in the random oracle model. In PKC 2007, Dodis et al. considered optimistic fair exchange in a multi-user setting, and showed that the security of an optimistic fair exchange in a single-user setting may no longer be secure in a multi-user setting. Besides, they also proposed one and reviewed several previous construction paradigms and showed that they are secure in the multi-user setting. However, their proofs are either in the …

K-Sketch: A 'Kinetic' Sketch Pad For Novice Animators, Richard C. Davis, Brien Colwell, James A. Landay
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Because most animation tools are complex and timeconsuming to learn and use, most animations today are created by experts. To help novices create a wide range of animations quickly, we have developed a general-purpos informal, 2D animation sketching system called K-Sketch. Field studies investigating the needs of animatorsnd would-be animators helped us collect a library of usage scenarios for our tool. A novel optimization technique enabled us to design an interface that is simultaneously fast, simple, and powerful. The result is a pen-based system that relies on users’ intuitive sense of space and time while still supporting a wide range …
Teaching Successful "Real-World" Software Engineering To The "Net" Generation: Process And Quality Win!, William L. Honig
Teaching Successful "Real-World" Software Engineering To The "Net" Generation: Process And Quality Win!, William L. Honig
Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Software engineering skills are critical for students seeking careers as software developers. However, academic course content often fails to teach practical, "real-world" software engineering as it is done in large organizations. Further, the proclivities of the current generation leave students disinclined to the disciplines of process and quality. Academics seldom use the Team Software Process (TSP), a leading methodology of global industries. Four years of data indicate that student teams using TSP can achieve industry levels of productivity and reasonable quality levels. Further, results from 23 teams and over 200 students indicate that these Net-Generation students developed an understanding for …

Validating Multi-Column Schema Matchings By Type, Bing Tian Dai, Nick Koudas, Divesh Srivastava, Anthony K.H. Tung, Suresh Venkatasubramanian
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Validation of multi-column schema matchings is essential for successful database integration. This task is especially difficult when the databases to be integrated contain little overlapping data, as is often the case in practice (e.g., customer bases of different companies). Based on the intuition that values present in different columns related by a schema matching will have similar "semantic type", and that this can be captured using distributions over values ("statistical types"), we develop a method for validating 1-1 and compositional schema matchings. Our technique is based on three key technical ideas. First, we propose a generic measure for comparing two …

E-Government Implementation: A Macro Analysis Of Singapore's E-Government Initiatives, Calvin M.L. Chan, Yi Meng Lau, Shan L. Pan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper offers a macro perspective of the various activities involved in the implementation of e-government through an interpretive analysis of the various e-government-related initiatives undertaken by the Singapore Government. The analysis lead to the identification of four main components in the implementation of e-government, namely (i) information content, (ii) ICT infrastructure, (iii) e-government infostructure, and (iv) e-government promotion. These four components were then conceptually integrated into the e-Government Implementation Framework. This paper suggests that this framework can either be used as a descriptive tool to organize and coordinate various e-government initiatives, or be used as a prescriptive structure to …
Real-Time Ultrasound Simulation For Medical Training And Standardized Patient Assessment, Bo Sun
Real-Time Ultrasound Simulation For Medical Training And Standardized Patient Assessment, Bo Sun
Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations
With the increasing role played by ultrasound in clinical diagnostics, ultrasound training in medical education has become more and more important. The clinical routine for ultrasound training is on real patients; therefore monitored and guided examinations involving medical students are quite time-constrained. Furthermore, standardized patients (SPs), who are increasingly used in medical school for teaching and assessing medical students, need to be augmented. These SPs are typically healthy individuals who can not accurately portray the variety of abnormalities that are needed for training especially when medical examinations involve instrument interactions. To augment SPs in a realistically effective way and also …

A Proof Of Concept For Oppnets And Its Resource Utilization Techniques With Qos Constraints, Zill-E-Huma Kamal
Dissertations
The increased number of embedded devices/systems in our environment and the evolution of the internet as a service oriented network connote two things: the demand for ubiquitous computing, and, the abstraction of users as consumers and applications as services, as in Service Oriented Computing (SOC) and Web Service domains.
This Thesis studies Class 2 Opportunistic Networks, Oppnets--in short. Oppnets propagate dynamic interconnection of heterogeneous devices/networks/systems and the integration of their resources or services-such as computation, communication, sensing, actuation, and storage -irrespective of the discrepancies in hardware, software, protocols, or standards employed, to enable ubiquitous computing. The novelty of Oppnets …
Interactive Visual Exploration Of Large Relation, Mustafa Sanver
Interactive Visual Exploration Of Large Relation, Mustafa Sanver
Dissertations
As data become ubiquitous and immense in many activities from business decision making to scientific analysis, effective analysis of such data becomes an important research area. Data analysis requires active involvement of human beings and visualization is a powerful tool to capture profound insights from data. However, interactive visual exploration of massive data poses fundamental technical challenges to both data visualization and database management systems. Millions of billions of data records clutter the screen and existing database management systems are inadequate for overview-and-drill-down data access for interactive data exploration.
We have proposed a density-based methodology to address the above challenge. …
Using Hierarchical Temporal Memory For Detecting Anomalous Network Activity, Gerod M. Bonhoff
Using Hierarchical Temporal Memory For Detecting Anomalous Network Activity, Gerod M. Bonhoff
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the nature of cyberspace and forms an argument for it as an intangible world. This research is motivated by the notion of creating intelligently autonomous cybercraft to reside in that environment and maintain domain superiority. Specifically, this paper offers 7 challenges associated with development of intelligent, autonomous cybercraft. The primary focus is an analysis of the claims of a machine learning language called Hierarchical Temporal Memory (HTM). In particular, HTM theory claims to facilitate intelligence in machines via accurate predictions. It further claims to be able to make accurate predictions of unusual worlds, like cyberspace. The research …

A Tool To Support Ontology Creation Based On Incremental Mini-Ontology Merging, Zonghui Lian
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis addresses the problem of tool support for semi-automatic ontology mapping and merging. Solving this problem contributes to ontology creation and evolution by relieving users from tedious and time-consuming work. This thesis shows that a tool can be built that will take a “mini-ontology” and a “growing ontology” as input and make it possible to produce manually, semi-automatically, or automatically an extended growing ontology as output. Characteristics of this tool include: (1) a graphical, interactive user interface with features that will allow users to map and merge ontologies, and (2) a framework supporting pluggable, semi-automatic, and automatic mapping and …

This research and it's resulting data analysis is intended to provide a better understanding …
Active Behavioral Fingerprinting Of Wireless Devices, Sergey Bratus, Cory Cornelius, David Kotz, Daniel Peebles
Active Behavioral Fingerprinting Of Wireless Devices, Sergey Bratus, Cory Cornelius, David Kotz, Daniel Peebles
Computer Science Technical Reports
We propose a simple active method for discovering facts about the chipset, the firmware or the driver of an 802.11 wireless device by observing its responses (or lack thereof) to a series of crafted non-standard or malformed 802.11 frames. We demonstrate that such responses can differ significantly enough to distinguish between a number of popular chipsets and drivers. We expect to significantly expand the number of recognized device types through community contributions of signature data for the proposed open fingerprinting framework. Our method complements known fingerprinting approaches, and can be used to interrogate and spot devices that may be spoofing …
Comparing Information Assurance Awareness Training For End-Users: A Content Analysis Examination Of Air Force And Defense Information Systems Agency User Training Modules, John W. Frugé
Theses and Dissertations
Today, the threats to information security and assurance are great. While there are many avenues for IT professionals to safeguard against these threats, many times these defenses prove useless against typical system users. Mandated by laws and regulations, all government agencies and most private companies have established information assurance (IA) awareness programs, most of which include user training. Much has been given in the existing literature to laying out the guidance for the roles and responsibilities of IT professionals and higher level managers, but less is specified for "everyday" users of information systems. This thesis attempts to determine the content …

A Delphi Study Assessing Long-Term Access To Electronic Medical Records (Emr), Byron D. Nicholson
Theses and Dissertations
This research effort addressed the issue of long-term access to electronic medical records as technological generations become obsolete, thereby preventing the access to patient health information. Using the Delphi methodology, experts with experience in electronic medical records and applicable systems provided insight based on their years of hands-on experience managing and/or using records and these systems. The end result of this research was a collection of ideas that medical institutions and medical informaticians must consider to ensure that patients and hospitals do not lose long-term access to electronic medical records as electronic medical records and technology continually evolves. Results of …

Theses and Dissertations
Understanding the cognitive process of IT user suspicion may assist organizations in development of network protection plans, personnel training, and tools necessary to identify and mitigate nefarious intrusions of IT systems. Exploration of a conceptual common ground between psycho-social and technology-related concepts of suspicion are the heart of this investigation. The complexities involved in merging these perspectives led to the overall research question: What is the nature of user suspicion toward IT: The research problem/phenomenon was addressed via extensive literature review, and use of the Interactive Qualitative Analysis problem/phenomenon. Analysis of the system led to the development of a model …
