Irrelevance, Polymorphism, And Erasure In Type Theory, Richard Nathan Mishra-Linger Nov 2008

Irrelevance, Polymorphism, And Erasure In Type Theory, Richard Nathan Mishra-Linger

Dissertations and Theses

Dependent type theory is a proven technology for verified functional programming in which programs and their correctness proofs may be developed using the same rules in a single formal system. In practice, large portions of programs developed in this way have no computational relevance to the ultimate result of the program and should therefore be removed prior to program execution. In previous work on identifying and removing irrelevant portions of programs, computational irrelevance is usually treated as an intrinsic property of program expressions. We find that such an approach forces programmers to maintain two copies of commonly used datatypes: a …

A New Framework For The Design And Analysis Of Identity-Based Identification Schemes, Guomin Yang, Jing Chen, Duncan S. Wong, Xiaotie Deng, Dongsheng Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Constructing an identification scheme is one of the fundamental problems in cryptography, and is very useful in practice. An identity-based identification (IBI) scheme allows a prover to identify himself to a public verifier who knows only the claimed identity of the prover and some public information. In this paper, we propose a new framework for both the design and analysis of IBI schemes. Our approach works in an engineering way. We first identify an IBI scheme as the composition of two building blocks, and then show that, with different security properties of these building blocks, the corresponding IBI schemes can …

A Neural Network Model For A Hierarchical Spatio-Temporal Memory, Kiruthika Ramanathan, Luping Shi, Jianming Li, Kian Guan Lim, Zhi Ping Ang, Chong Chong Tow

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The architecture of the human cortex is uniform and hierarchical in nature. In this paper, we build upon works on hierarchical classification systems that model the cortex to develop a neural network representation for a hierarchical spatio-temporal memory (HST-M) system. The system implements spatial and temporal processing using neural network architectures. We have tested the algorithms developed against both the MLP and the Hierarchical Temporal Memory algorithms. Our results show definite improvement over MLP and are comparable to the performance of HTM.

Two-Factor Mutual Authentication Based On Smart Cards And Passwords, Guomin Yang, Duncan S. Wong, Huaxiong Wang, Xiaotie Deng Nov 2008

Two-Factor Mutual Authentication Based On Smart Cards And Passwords, Guomin Yang, Duncan S. Wong, Huaxiong Wang, Xiaotie Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

One of the most commonly used two-factor user authentication mechanisms nowadays is based on smart-card and password. A scheme of this type is called a smart-card-based password authentication scheme. The core feature of such a scheme is to enforce two-factor authentication in the sense that the client must have the smart-card and know the password in order to gain access to the server. In this paper, we scrutinize the security requirements of this kind of schemes, and propose a new scheme and a generic construction framework for smart-card-based password authentication. We show that a secure password based key exchange protocol …

Market Liquidity Provision For On-Demand Computing, Zhiling Guo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper focuses on a market intermediary’s role of liquidity provision to support on-demand computing in a dynamic market trading environment. We outline a framework in which a number of distributed agents sell and buy assets based on their changing utilities over time and a service provider acts as a market maker performing market intervention. We present benchmark models based on socially optimal liquidity provision and a brokerage framework. We then examine the benefits and the dealer’s incentives to provide market liquidity.

Modality Mixture Projections For Semantic Video Event Detection, Jialie Shen, Dacheng Tao, Xuelong Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Event detection is one of the most fundamental components for various kinds of domain applications of video information system. In recent years, it has gained a considerable interest of practitioners and academics from different areas. While detecting video event has been the subject of extensive research efforts recently, much less existing approach has considered multimodal information and related efficiency issues. In this paper, we use a subspace selection technique to achieve fast and accurate video event detection using a subspace selection technique. The approach is capable of discriminating different classes and preserving the intramodal geometry of samples within an identical …

Profile-Guided Program Simplification For Effective Testing And Analysis, Lingxiao Jiang, Zhendong Su Nov 2008

Profile-Guided Program Simplification For Effective Testing And Analysis, Lingxiao Jiang, Zhendong Su

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Many testing and analysis techniques have been developed for inhouse use. Although they are effective at discovering defects before a program is deployed, these techniques are often limited due to the complexity of real-world code and thus miss program faults. It will be the users of the program who eventually experience failures caused by the undetected faults. To take advantage of the large number of program runs carried by the users, recent work has proposed techniques to collect execution profiles from the users for developers to perform post-deployment failure analysis. However, in order to protect users' privacy and to reduce …

Virtual World Affordances: Enhancing Brand Value, S. Park, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, D. Dewester, B. Eschenbrenner, S. Jeon

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Virtual worlds are three-dimensional, computer-generated worlds that are a natural extension of the existing Internet. Although many businesses are jumping on the bandwagon to maintain a presence in virtual worlds, there is no well-established knowledge or theory to guide businesses in their involvement in these environments. In this paper, we identify affordances in the virtual worlds that can be used to increase the state of flow experienced in a business virtual site, which in turn may enhance brand equity, or the perceived added value of a brand to customers. We present a conceptual model that can be used to guide …

Work In Progress: How Do We Teach And Measure Systems Thinking?, Linda Vanasupa, Erika Rogers, Katherine Chen

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Since the 1990's blue-ribbon commissions on engineering education have called for educators to graduate engineers who are capable of systems thinking. However, there is sparse information on how to cultivate this type of cognitive development. How do we develop and measure systems thinking? In this paper, we present the first of a series of methods that we are piloting to initiate the systems thinking process. This exercise, developed by Checkland and Scholes and called "Rich Pictures," requires the participant to express a reality in terms of images and connections between these images. We utilized the Rich Pictures exercise in combination …

Using Vagueness Measures To Re-Rank Documents Retrieved By A Fuzzy Set Information Retrieval Model, Stephen Lynn, Yiu-Kai D. Ng Oct 2008

Using Vagueness Measures To Re-Rank Documents Retrieved By A Fuzzy Set Information Retrieval Model, Stephen Lynn, Yiu-Kai D. Ng

Faculty Publications

Traditional information retrieval (IR) systems evaluate user queries and retrieve/rank documents based on matching keywords in user queries with words in documents. These exact word-matching and ranking approaches ignore too many relevant documents that do not contain the exact keywords as specified in a user query. Instead of considering these traditional approaches, we propose to retrieve documents using a fuzzy set IR model and rank retrieved documents for any vague query using the “vagueness score” of the documents based on the word senses as defined in WordNet. Using the vagueness scores, we rank the most highest “relevant” documents of a …

What A User Wants: Redesigning A Library's Web Site Based On A Card-Sort Analysis, Laura Pope Robbins, Lisa Esposito, Christ Kretz, Michael Aloi

Publications

Web site usability concerns anyone with a web site to maintain. Libraries, however, are often the biggest offenders in terms of usability. In our efforts to provide users with everything they need to do research, we often overwhelm them with sites that are confusing in structure, difficult to navigate, and weighed down with jargon. Dowling College Library recently completed a redesign of its web site based upon the concept of usability. For smaller libraries in particular, this can be a challenge. The web site is often maintained by one or two people and finding the time and resources to conduct …

Untitled, Darren Poon

Architecture Master Theses

"My objective is to explore the potential of generative design processes driven by user-derived parameters established through computational protocols, algorithms, and simulations resulting in a process embodying ecologies of feedback and performances. Inherent in the designed process is the establishment of feedback, through each cycle of simulation, evaluation, and modification of the geometry.

This thesis project demonstrates a version of these processes specifically examining the performance driven building typology of the massive server farm. Specifically, its implicit correlations with fluid dynamic simulation and its biases toward an optimization of heat dissipation and plan layout. This project is situated between a …

Who Can Help Me With This Source Code Change, Huzefa Kagdi, Maen Hammad, Jonathan I. Maletic

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

An approach to recommend a ranked list of developers to assist in performing software changes to a particular file is presented. The ranking is based on change expertise, experience, and contributions of developers, as derived from the analysis of the previous commits involving the specific file in question. The commits are obtained from a software system's version control repositories (e.g., Subversion). The basic premise is that a developer who has substantially contributed changes to specific files in the past is likely to best assist for their current or future change. Evaluation of the approach on a number of open source …

Integrated Mining Of Feature Spaces For Bioinformatics Domain Discovery, Pradeep Chowriappa Oct 2008

Integrated Mining Of Feature Spaces For Bioinformatics Domain Discovery, Pradeep Chowriappa

Doctoral Dissertations

One of the major challenges in the field of bioinformatics is the elucidation of protein folding for the functional annotation of proteins. The factors that govern protein folding include the chemical, physical, and environmental conditions of the protein's surroundings, which can be measured and exploited for computational discovery purposes. These conditions enable the protein to transform from a sequence of amino acids to a globular three-dimensional structure. Information concerning the folded state of a protein has significant potential to explain biochemical pathways and their involvement in disorders and diseases. This information impacts the ways in which genetic diseases are characterized …

Herding Cats: Governance Models For The Care And Feeding Of Enterprise Resources Planning Systems In Higher Education Institutions, Paula Russell Oct 2008

Herding Cats: Governance Models For The Care And Feeding Of Enterprise Resources Planning Systems In Higher Education Institutions, Paula Russell

MPA Capstone Projects 2006 - 2015

Enterprise Resources Planning systems (ERPs) have revolutionized the manner in which higher education institutions manage its resources. ERPs provide the mechanism to aggregate disparate data across the institution and deliver reports and facilitate analysis on the institution as a whole. ERPs provide a single source of truth for institutional data enabling an institution-wide view of expenditures and are powerful tool for decision support. Institutions choosing to invest in implementing ERPs will enter into a long term relationship with continual maintenance of the systems. Key to the success of maintaining ERPs effectively is the governance model an institution adopts for managing …

Ontology Enhanced Web Image Retrieval: Aided By Wikipedia And Spreading Activation Theory, Huan Wang, Xing Jiang, Liang-Tien Chia, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Ontology, as an efective approach to bridge the semantic gap in various domains, has attracted a lot of interests from multimedia researchers. Among the numerous possibilities enabled by ontology, we are particularly interested in exploiting ontology for a better understanding of media task (particularly, images) on the World Wide Web. To achieve our goal, two open issues are inevitably involved: 1) How to avoid the tedious manual work for ontology construction? 2) What are the effective inference models when using an ontology? Recent works about ontology learned from Wikipedia has been reported in conferences targeting the areas of knowledge management …
